WHEELING, WV – He is not yet back to work in the Senate chamber, but U.S. Sen. Robert Byrd is opposing “cap and trade” legislation pushed by the Obama administration.

The 91-year-old Byrd, D-W.Va., was released from an unidentified Washington, D.C. hospital last week after a month-long stay for a staph infection. He expects to return to the chamber before the Senate begins debate on “cap and trade” – which is tentatively set for this fall, according to Byrd’s office.

“I cannot support the House bill in its present form,” Byrd said in a statement. “I continue to believe that clean coal can be a ‘green’ energy. Those of us who understand coal’s great potential in our quest for energy independence must continue to work diligently in shaping a climate bill that will ensure access to affordable energy for West Virginians. I remain bullish about the future of coal, and am so very proud of the miners who labor and toil in the coalfields of West Virginia.”

Byrd grew up in the coalfields of Stotesbury, W.Va., in Raleigh County. Jesse Jacobs, spokesman for Byrd, said the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee will begin marking up the “cap and trade” bill later this month, with floor debate scheduled for September or October.

“So it is our hope that yes, Sen. Byrd will be here to vote on the legislation,” Jacobs continued. “His return will be determined by his doctors and family members.”

“Cap and trade” legislation – also known as House Resolution 2454 – is intended to reduce carbon emissions from coal-fired power plants over the next 40 years. It establishes a program that allows pollution permits to be bought and sold. The measure narrowly passed the U.S. House on June 26 by a vote of 219-212.

We're not easily offended and don't want people to think they have to walk on eggshells around here (like at another place that shall remain nameless) but of course, there is a limit to everything.

Play nice!

This may be the one and only time I concur with the old coot. Oh wait, he also expressed concern over all the czars The Obama has hired. Something about checks and balances. Good to know a 91 year old man noticed.

Of course, Crap and Tax will destory whatever is left of West Virginia’s economy--and pretty much send the rest of the county into the gutter. Who the heck needs Jihadists to destory the United States? We’re comitting national suicide.

Of course they want to destroy the coal industry -- we’re the Saudi Arabia of coal. It is also a clean source of power.

Not that anybody ever bought that this was about the environment, but it’s proof possitive that this is about bankrupting America and keeping us from using our own resources.

    This is Byrd.

Don’t get too excited. They’ll write in an Amendment to the bill that will give Byrd more money for something else in his state to be named after him.

Then he’ll support the bill, saying that it is now supportable and that we should all get behind it.

When I visited Huntington, WV about five years ago, half the buildings in town were named after Byrd. In the Byrd hospital, there were several large portraits of the Senator which reminded me of the mass-produced portraits third world despots erect of themselves.

An objective of Crap and Tax is to destory the coal mining industry. Since coal mining is the only industry of any consequence in WV I don’t think Byrd will be so easily bought off on this one.

We’ll see. I understand that there are actually quite a few Democrats that have wavered on Cap and Trade, suggesting that maybe it isn’t such a great idea after all….. to try and stimulate the economy by taxing everyone for everything….

They prefer more complex taxes, like income tax, which is taken out of your paycheck before you get it, and licenses to do darn near anything…..
