Another Saturday night drinking thread featuring Cliff Claven from “Cheers”…

by Bob in Breckenridge ( 394 Comments › )
Filed under Free Speech, Military, Open thread, Patriotism at October 10th, 2009 - 6:20 pm

Cliff says to Norm: “Well, ya see, Norm, it’s like this…A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo, and when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and
weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells, making a faster and more efficient machine. And so, that’s why you always feel smarter after a few beers.”

According to Cliff’s logic, I was a fucking genius, able to control the world with my own thoughts. Then I screwed it all up by getting sober. Now all I got are these stupid coins…..

Thanks for reminding me to knock off a few of those slow, useless brain cells.

The Claven theory explains to me why one of the dumbest people I have ever met was a lefty vegetarian health nut who didn’t drink and wouldn’t dream of eating anything non-organic. And yes, she was from California.

She ate an entire bulb of garlic every single day -- she’d eat it RAW with whole wheat toast in the morning. I’m a garlic lover -- but sheesh!

One day, she came home from work very agitated and distressed because her boss had told she reeked and her other co-workers had complained about it. And this was at some lefty co-op where I imagine more than one employee would not pass a hygiene test. She asked me point-blank: “Do I stink?”

What else could I say? I smoked at the time, my own sense of smell wasn’t that good, and I could smell her.

She would have benefited from killing off a few of the slower brain cells in her head. They were clearly crowding out and killing the healthy ones. ;-)

I just happened to be listening to the radio this evening, and I heard some woman repeat this new mantra that 80% of Americans support the, “public option,” for health care. She of course was not chalanged at all by the abc reporter who was conducting the interview. I can’t help but think that this latest idiocy is an attempt to fool people into believing that this sink hole of a bill is overwhelmingly supported by a larger percentage of Americans than any other policy idea in history. Are any of you catching this similar tactic. I don’t believe that Americans in general are that dumb. Congress critters on the other hand command a lot less respect from me.

Charles should (assuming that he has not) strongly encourage her to start finding a career for herself even if it means gong back to school. I think (actually I know) that she would listen to him. The Melbourne Cup is run on Tuesday next. The race that stops all of Australia and NZ for 4 minutes each year.

The bookmakers have that mare Pelosi at 2:1 favorite after it leaked out that the jockey was Obama.

Hell why even run the race?

Even though LGF was a conservative blog for so many years, we were nto an echo chamber and we had some lively, intelligent debates, now it is “Charles you rock!” most of the time.

I like autumn, but the weather just turned too cold too fast this year. Lots of people are sick.

As for spring -- we seldom have one. I was wearing a sweater over Memorial Day weekend for God’s sake.

The summer was lovely. Didn’t turn on the AC once, just opened the windows and had fans going and nice cross breezes.

I detested summer when I lived in DC. But I do miss those lovely springs.

The thing that really pissed me off was Sharmuta slamming the Bradley Foundation as a “Bircher” organization.

I live within walking distance of the Bradley Foundation and they have done great work spearheading the voucher program in Milwaukee.
If not for the BF and Polly Williams, a brave black Milwaukee Democrat, many black children would be stuck in terrible schools. And of course, they’re fought tooth and nail by the teacher’s unions.

Why on earth would racist “Birchers” promote educational opportunities for black kids? A real racist would be glad they’re stuck in crappy schools.

Sharmuta is as ignorant as dirt and yet she can casually slander a good organization and nobody there will or can correct her.

You can find some ammo on gunbroker, but I haven’t been pleased with the prices I’ve seen. We are starting to see price pressures with demand staying as high as it it.

There may be a light at the end of the tunnel, though. We went to Gander Mountain today, and they had a number of things marked down in price, and had the most ammo I’ve seen available for a year or so.

    Just in!

Another little mess for Zero to procrastinate overt!

Taliban gunmen take hostages at Pakistan’s military HQ, push towards its nuclear arsenal
    DEBKAfile Special Report
    October 10, 2009, 9:21 PM (GMT+02:00)

Defending Pakistani army HQ against Taliban
Four-to-five assailants were holding between 10 and 15 officers hostage in a building near the main gates of Pakistan’s army headquarters in capital Saturday, Oct. 10 after an audacious invasion of the complex and gunfight in which at least eight soldier soldiers including a lieutenant general and four gunmen were killed. DEBKAfile reports that lodged in the HQ compound is the secret department in charge of securing Pakistan’s nuclear weapons.
As the Taliban dressed as soldiers burst into the army HQ in Islamabad, Pakistani paramilitary forces battled a second group of insurgents to recover control of a road tunnel which connects the towns of Darra Adam Khel and Kohat in the North West Frontier Province.
On May 15, DEBKA-Net-Weekly exclusively named Kohat and the Wah Cantonment Pakistani Ordnance Complex in the city of Kamra, both in the NWFP, as keys to Pakistan’s nuclear and missile arsenals.
Our military sources stressed at the time that Kohat’s fall to the Taliban would cut off Islamabad and the Pakistani high command from Kamra and its nuclear arsenal. This appeared to be the object of the Taliban push on the tunnel-road coupled with the assault on military headquarters.
In a rare news conference, Khalid Kidwai, chief of Pakistan’s strategic planning division which controls its nuclear program, rejected international fears that Pakistan’s weapons could fall into the wrong hands and warned against any foreign intervention over the issue. “‘The state of alertness has gone up,” he admitted without going into details, but stressed: “There is no conceivable scenario, political or violent, in which Pakistan will fall to the extremists of the al Qaeda or Taliban types.”
He spoke the day after the chief of Pakistan’s army, General Ashfaq Kiyani, dismissed as “unrealistic” fears that al Qaeda could seize the country’s nuclear weapons.
DEBKAfile reported earlier: The Islamabad attack occurred at a defining moment in Washington for the Afghan/Pakistan conflict. President Barack Obama is completing a military review of US military strategy in the two arenas with his top advisers and military commanders. The conference is tilting toward shifting the US military focus away from the Taliban to al Qaeda, despite three factors now illustrated in blood Saturday:
    1. Just as Taliban and al Qaeda are inseparable, so too are the Afghan and Pakistan warfronts.
    2. Those two organizations hold the initiative, not the American army. They are capable of answering the White House’s decisions on strategy in unexpected places and ways.
    3. Pakistan, America’s chosen senior ally in the war against Taliban and al Qaeda, is a broken reed in military terms and too vulnerable to lean on.
Saturday, Pakistan’s president, Ali Zardari, saw those adversaries striking inside the headquarters of his armed forces in the capital, demonstrating their ability to reach into any part of his government, including the presidential palace, and topple his regime. This is exactly the same tactic the two partners in terror are pursuing in Kabul. Insurgents or al Qaeda were also admitted to be within range of key locations for Pakistan’s nuclear and missile arsenals.
For some weeks, the Pakistani army has been concentrating a large force of more than 100,000 men for a big offensive against Taliban and al Qaeda strongholds in the lawless tribal territories of Waziristan bordering on Afghanistan. The attack on its headquarters in Islamabad carried a message: If this offensive goes forward, Pakistan’s major cities will pay the price.
On Oct. 8, a car bombing later claimed by Taliban killed 49 people in the Khyber Bazaar of Peshawar. Monday, five people died in the bombing of a United Nations aid agency in Islamabad.
Zardari’s army chiefs are flatly opposed to the understanding he is developing with the Obama administration for $1.5 billion in US aid in return for launching a major Pakistani military offensive against Taliban and al Qaeda. They accuse the US of interfering in relations between civil government and the military.
The attack on the army’s headquarters Saturday would have been taken as a gesture of support for the opponents of a US-Pakistan alliance. It was also a warning that Pakistan’s nuclear arsenal may not be entirely safe from terrorist control.

According to the article that accompanied Cato’s photo, some people have service dogs merely to remind them when to take medication. Or at least it implied that was a legitimate reason to have a service dog.

Gays are men and women. I don’t know if gays are better or worse at managing their sexuality than heterosexuals. It seems that a many heteros can’t either.

Nuclear subs sometimes stay under for months at a time, working 12 hour shifts. People get stressed and are in closer proximity than most other military positions: I don’t see this as exactly they same as surface ships and aircraft carriers, thought maybe it is.

The vast majority of military positions are probably less intense and sexuality can be managed a lot better by the people and the managers, thought nature, the good and bad, still happens. I question whether it’s that important to have women/men on nuclear subs together, or in combat, etc. Does not mean that the other 95% of military roles and positions could be of mixed sex/sexuality, there seems to be little problem with that.

If people can’t keep their sexual impulses under control on a submarine, maybe they don’t deserve to be trusted with that duty.

Maybe thats why Carter did and Clinton didn’t.

That’s the only gun in the house we’ve had any trouble finding ammo for. I’ve got a pile of .308, and plenty of .40. 5.56 isn’t hard to come by at our local gun store. Even 7.62x54r, although I did have a bit of trouble finding any without steel bullets.

When it comes to .44 special target ammo, though, you’d think I was looking for Stinger missiles or something. Plenty of Cor-Bon self defense loads on the shelf, but they’re a little pricey for punching holes in paper.

There is a serious issue at play here, and I suspect Charlie choses to ignore it on purpose. Many people assume that the military resists homosexual service due to a prejudice or a homophobic reaction. The fact is that there is nothing more involved than not wanting to introduce a polarizing element into basic fighting units. As many here have stated, wars are won by killing the enemy. In order to do that effectively, you need your fighting units to be working cohesivly. Any element which has the potential to cause acrimony will get everyone on your side killed. When I go into battle, right and wrong are the farthest things from my mind. Soldiers do not have time in battle to weigh moral philosophies. Nothing will polarize young men quicker than a homosexual in their midst. Is that wrong? It probably is, but who cares. If you send men into battle, send them to win. Leave right and wrong to the politicians.

I saw REM when they were just up and coming. I thought they were fairly good. Also on the bill at The Palace, Hollywood was INXS, Simple Minds and U2. Can you believe this, The Human League topped the bill.

Hey Dorian, I have met all of REM on more than one occasion and know for a fact that they are pompous and a little bit off. Well, MIke Mills seemed like a nice guy. But Stipe was just flaky and Buck only wanted to get high. Anyway, I don’t have any illusions about who they are as individuals. Their must really helped shaped me as a young man though.

And PS, are you really a retired glam star? I worked in record stores throughout the 80s and probably sold your LPS. Care to give me a hint as to your identity?

Seeing as this is a drinking thread. I got drunk with Grand Funk Railroad in New Orleans, late ’69 or early ’70.
My high school French club went for a class trip, a drop dead gorgeous classmate and I were too young to hit Bourbon Street, so we hung out in the hotel passing a bottle between ourselves.
Long story short, they invited us to a party in their suite and yes, if not for her, I surely would not have been invited.
The next morning, the ones that hit Bourbon St. were telling us what we had missed the night before.

Reminds me of the time one of my instructors in college talked about being in high school with Buddy Holly in Lubbock. This teacher claimed that in band class he sat between the guy that would become Holly’s drummer in the Crickets and his girlfriend at the time, Peggy Sue. And my teacher used to help pass notes between the two of them.

He said that the neighborhood kids used to sit around watching Buddy Holly and the Crickets rehearse at Holly’s house and didn’t think it was a big deal.

He quit the band called Zzyxx and joined me. We went nowhere with that group because the guitarist I chose from a a band called Black Dog was a drunk. Well the band he quit went on to become Great White.

I asked him about it later when the Great White became a name and he told me he didn’t regret it since they made their name by doing copies.

And most important, was the band in question a four piece?

How did you know the band? Were you friends with someone? A guitar tech?

I was auditioning for a band (guitarists brothers band (which I did not get because his brother while being impressed by my guitar playing felt I wasn’t right for his band)) here in San Diego California. T

he guitarist for the band I ended up playing for walked in just after my audition all freaked out because his new young wife had just had their first baby and the record company wanted him to go on tour, he didnt know what to do. His brother said, dude, maybe you should check out this dudes playing.

And that as they say was that…

I would like to hear your (serious) views on why Charles Johnson continues to blog.
    Profit?
    To be an influential opinion-maker?
    To push blogging technology?
To establish his own fame and reputation?
To establish a group of political allies?
    To win friends?
To create a body of text for posterity?
    For fun ?
    To flex his power?
    To change the world?

If psychosis -- we should just turn away. No interest or fun to be had in following the story.

If a masochist -- why would he continue to register of new commenters and ban them so quickly and with such satisfaction as “socks” or “trolls” ? Of course, he may have to supply the bannings -- like the Roman circus -- to keep his citizens happy and coming back. God knows the threads are incredibly boring without the anticipation of bannings and the schadenfreude provoked by them.

No, I’m not satisfied with either of these answers.

Maybe he is hoping ofr feral grant money. Given that he rattles the tip jar incessantly, he is clueless as to where his fortunes lie. Liberals are only generous with other peoples money.
It appears that LGF’s tip jar is his sole means of support. All through the day he posts and comments with short breaks for rides on his bike. Those appear to be less frequent. If he had anything invested, it too the same hit we all did. The left coast is hell on washed out jizz musicians.

I think he has pretensions to an original voice, but has no analytical abilities and so cannot produce a coherent political philosophy. He really does not say anything. “Me too” blogs are a ubiquitous.

And if he is moving to the left, why is he being so coy about it? He nudges and winks and makes gagging sounds about the right, but that is only good for a quote from the left for as long as they think he is on the right. Otherwise its what all the leftists do.

I stand by the theory I posted last night -- that away from his computer, CJ is a middle-aged, divorced, not-very-successful jazz guitarist. He doesn’t have much to show from his brief brush with fame in 2004.

But when he’s at his computer, he is the all-powerful Lizard King who can ban dissenting commenters and order toadies about. He can be a mini-dictator, thanks to the Internet.

I don’t believe for a second it’s about “winning friends” seeing that he’ll banish even long-time posters for something as petty as a down-ding or a link to an unapproved site.

I’ve also noted that he is the only big blogger I know of who never takes a break from it and never lets others guest blogger. The only vacation I believe he’s had from LGF when his brother got married. And that wasn’t even a full weekend. Focus on nothing but running a blog for 9 years straight and you’re bound to get loopy. Especially since the only way to make a living at it at this point is to attach yourself to some “old media” site, like the NRO or Atlantic bloggers. Or else be funded by Soros or some other moneybags.

Unless he has a trust fund or savings of some sort, I have no idea how he makes ends met. You can’t live in Southern California solely on tip jar earning, unless Soros or the Huff are dropping wads of cash into the tip jar.

Found this on Wikipedia when I decided to look up info on H.L. Mencken because Ace has a quote from him on his blog.

“The Presidency tends, year by year, to go to such men. As democracy is perfected, the office represents, more and more closely, the inner soul of the people. We move toward a lofty ideal. On some great and glorious day the plain folks of the land will reach their heart’s desire at last, and the White House will be adorned by a downright moron.” (Baltimore Evening Sun, July 26, 1920)

The ones will be the last to go… They really have no real life. LGF is their reason d’etre (hey I speek frog!)

The twos I believe were and are the type of poster that set up or went to that CC or C2 site. Friends who wanted somewhwre else to just chat.

The twos: make sense. But why the proscription on mentioning Charles. Gossip is part of chat. Having been to that site, it is not as if it is bursting with intellectualism.

The threes: No, I think they are ones, who feel favoritised by the host. There is a lot of jealousy and jockeying for approval. Which makes the site horrible to read. Flattery and competitions in expressing agreement with the host.

Overlook, your nic and questions are sound. As are Beck’s. Question the insanity of the left And CJ. You won’t find logic or clear cut answers in either.

    My LOL refers to littleoldlady.

Sure she made me laugh, and because of it I tried to ‘help’ in supplying fruit cups when she was vacationing in Florida (ah, but I was a newbie, then, and No One could dare to do that!). In return? She was not the sweet lol she painted herself out to be.

There are so many lizards I came to love. . . but not all.

But, as I have said above, if money is his motive, he should sell the blog now, before it shrinks further and loses value.

    Maybe he already has.

/’The Dread Pirate Roberts’ Theory. It’s the name ‘Charles’ that sells the blog.

    Hiya Rick,

I agree. I smell Soros. I think CJ sold out in about 11/08. Had he been who he’s turned into, with these views, I would not have stuck around his site (the slowest on the internet) for 5 years.

I need to sleep now as I’m working in the mornin’. Hope to see you soon.

    G’night. :)

To quote the late Jeff Buckley:

“The 60′s were bullshit. The 70′s were bigger bullshit. The 80′s were total bullshit, except, maybe, The Smiths…”

That photo of cato ‘splains a lot. It looks like he hasn’t taken a decent shit or had a hard on in about 20 years.

Had CJ gotten Soros money he would not need to be pimping Amazon.

Are you kidding me? CJ would pimp his bicycle spokes if it could make him a quick buck.

I wonder if Ned/Cato has some kind of mental illness and hence a dog.

He is not blind, deaf, or mobility impaired.

He drives a car, calls people on the phone and goes on vacation by plane.

He is apparently free to serve jury duty with ease, so I guess he collects a check for whatever his disability is.

I shouldn’t care, except he is such a flaming a-hole.
