Saturday Morning News roundup Open Thread

Goodmorning Blogmocracy Netizens. It’s Saturday and I hope everyone has a fun and relaxing day. I made this an open thread since there are so many events occurring that no one topic can be focused on . Instead there are several stories I am following.

The House Democrats as of this moment still don’t have the votes to pass Their vile Obamacare bill.

WASHINGTON — Amid intense lobbying by the Obama administration, House Democratic leaders struggled Friday for the final votes needed to pass sweeping health care legislation, working to ease concerns among Hispanic holdouts and abortion foes.

“We’re very close” to having enough votes to prevail, said Majority Leader Steny Hoyer of Maryland, although he added a scheduled Saturday vote could slip by a day or two and sought to pin the blame on possible Republican delaying tactics.

I really hope this Bill doesn’t pass, this is not the way to go with Health-Care reform. It will make the situation worse and could politicize medical decisions. Our economy will also be burden at a time we can’t sustain more spending and debt.

Colonial Imperialist Nidal Hassan was stopped by Mother of one and Police Officer Kimberly Munley.

A police officer and mother of one was hailed a heroine yesterday after it emerged that she almost single handedly ended the massacre at America’s biggest military base.

Kimberly Munley does not look as if she would be much of a match for a heavily armed US soldier on a murderous rampage. But the slightly built 34-year-old civilian officer was first on the scene after Major Nidal Malik Hasan began firing on comrades at Ford Hood in Texas as they prepared to deploy to Afghanistan and Iraq. The 39-year-old psychologist killed 13 and left 31 others with serious injuries.

She is a Resistance hero for her act of bravery. She stopped Imperialist aggression dead in its tracks. Kimberly is a true Patriot and deserves our applause.

In an incident that could have implication for our National Security, hackers were able to bring down the power grid in Brazil and cause blackouts.

A series of power outages affecting millions of people in Brazil in 2005 and 2007 were the result of cyber attacks, 60 MINUTES has learned. The two-day event in Espirito Santo State affecting more than three million people in 2007 and another, smaller event in three cities north of Rio de Janeiro in January 2005 were perpetrated by hackers manipulating control systems. The revelation is part of a Steve Kroft investigation into how computers and the Internet can be used as weapons to be broadcast on 60 MINUTES Sunday, Nov. 8 (7:00-8:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network.

Former Chief of U.S. National Intelligence Retired Adm. Mike McConnell believes it could happen in America. “If I were an attacker and wanted to do strategic damage to the United States, I would either take the cold of winter or the heat of summer,” he tells Kroft. “I would probably sack electric power on the U.S. East Coast, maybe the West Coast and attempt to cause a cascading effect.” If hackers did attack the U.S. power grid, “The United States is not prepared for such an attack.” says McConnell.

Congressman Jim Langevin (D.- R.I.), who chaired a subcommittee on cyber security, agrees. He says that U.S. power companies need to be forced to deal with the issue after they told Congress they would take steps to defend their operations but did not follow up. “They admit that they misled Congress,” says Langevin, and they still haven’t made much progress. “The private sector has different priorities than we do in providing security. Their…bottom line is about profits,” he tells Kroft. “We need to change their motivation so that when see vulnerability like this, we can require them to fix it.”

This is worrisome because it can happen here in the United States. We need to improve our Network Security and prevent any attempts to bring down our Power grid. Failure to do so will leave us vulnerable.

Today is College Football day as well! Today’s big showdown is #9 LSU vs. #3 Alabama. This is a rivalry  and should be a great game to watch. It will be broadcast 3:30 EST on CBS.

No. 3 Alabama and No. 9 LSU will play Saturday for the sort of stakes typical for a November game between SEC leaders. If the Crimson Tide wins, it clinches the SEC West championship. If the Tigers win, they not only move into the SEC West driver’s seat but also remain in the race for the national championship.

And when Alabama and LSU play, national aspirations don’t matter one bit. There’s too much else on the line.

Another game to watch is #16 Ohiop St. vs. #11 Penn. St. This will be broadcast 3:30 EST on ABC.

Enjoy your Staurday and all discussions and topics are encouraged on this thread!

Update: It is Macker’s 49th Birthday, let’s wish him a happy one!

    About the power grid hacking:

Rest assured that if it was possible for hackers to affect parts of Brazil’s power infrastructure, that someone there made some very basic design errors. There’s no valid reason to have hackable computers connected to the internet in places where they can affect the operation of the power grid. Period.

In the US, the donkeys are itching to spend billions on the “smart grid”, even though no one can define what a smart grid is. These stories about hackers taking the infrastructure down are part of a campaign to get billions of government money for something that nobody can even define.

And even if the “smart grid” was a well-defined program, the concept places the grid at MORE risk of cyber attack.

The taxpayers are being rolled. To the extent that there’s a benefit at all in adding IT infrastructure to the grid, the utilities ought to be funding it, just like all other capital expenditures.

George W. and Laura Bush visited the wounded at Ft. Hood.

FORT HOOD, Texas — Former President George W. Bush and his wife, Laura, visited wounded soldiers and their families near the site of the worst mass shooting on an Army post in the United States.

The Bushes made their private visit to Fort Hood’s Darnall Army Medical Center on Friday night. Bush spokesman David Sherzer said in an e-mail that the couple thanked Fort Hood’s military leaders and hospital staff for the “amazing care they are providing.”

“He obviously didn’t want to go,” said Duane Reasoner, 18, who looked up to Hasan as a sort of religious mentor. “He said he shouldn’t be going to Iraq, and Muslims shouldn’t be in the military — it was an obvious conflict of interest. Muslims shouldn’t be killing Muslims. He told me not to join the military.”

Reasoner said he wouldn’t condemn Hasan after the shooting spree.

“I don’t know his intentions,” Reasoner told FoxNews.com. “I don’t know what he was thinking. I won’t condemn another Muslim.”

How telling is this?! Zero disrespectfully banters and gives shout outs to audience members for several minutes before awkwardly and insincerely addressing the horror that had just unfolded. Pres. Bush would have rushed to the scene immediately to comfort and support the troops. It obviously didn’t even occur to Zero to do that. This shows you what he thinks of our military. He is a disgusting anti-American communist and he looks at our military with disdain. If he ever shows up at Fort Hood he is NOT going to get a warm welcome. Our troops can tell he’s worthless.

Excellent find, snork. I find the following graphs particulaly good:

In this regard he is quite different from George W. Bush, who, for all the criticism of his verbal abilities, delivered some of the most moving oratory (on the rubble heap in New York City, at the National Cathedral on November 14, etc.) in recent memory and never failed to impart a sense of his own emotional presence. Tears were often just beneath the surface, and sometimes not even concealed from view. It was not done for affect, nor as a ploy for sympathy. It was simply who he was, and the country could sense his innate decency and his tender affection for his fellow countrymen.

    And:

There is a price to be paid for those who don’t grasp this. A president who fails to bond with the American people, who holds himself above or beyond them, is not a president who will enjoy a reservoir of affection and support in return, especially when the political winds are no longer at his back. Sometimes it simply doesn’t pay to be cool.

From the “Dear Pharmacist” (Suzy Cohen) newspaper column (excerpts):

    [Nov 7, 2009; Question:]
Dear Pharmacist, I read your Facebook post about vitamin D and how it works better than diabetic medications. I have diabetes, and no one has ever told me this. Would you share more information? — L.N., Denver

[Answer:]….Doctors have many medications at their disposal to reduce blood glucose. I think natural vitamin D can help too, so I posted that comment on Facebook and Twitter. I was trying to help people with diabetes because they may not know that it’s an inexpensive, over-the-counter dietary supplement.

My comment was based in clinical science. More specifically, on a 2004 study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition which found that raising a person’s blood levels of vitamin D (from 25 to 75 nmol/l) could improve insulin sensitivity by a whopping 60 percent.

Compare that to metformin, one of our pharmaceutical gold-standards, which can dispose of blood sugar by a meager 13 percent according to the New England Journal of Medicine.

Didn’t see that but have had my fill of excuses for the jihadi murderer.MDs are an elite corp in the military, no way was he “picked on”, no way was he going “into combat” and if the military conflicted with his beliefs he should never have taken the free government/taxpayer ride. When you join up you automatically become contracted to serve your country and it is not a matter of choice.

But taking ‘free government money’ is what today’s liberals are all about. ESPECIALLY when you couple it with whining about having to live up to their end of the bargain. I remember the upheaval in the Army (you didn’t see it from the Marines) about people not wanting to go to Afghanistan or Iraq back after 9/11. They joined for the free education and didn’t think they’d have to do anything to earn it.

Self-Responsibility, Duty and Honor are lost on much of our nation. Saddly, by design.

    @ vagabond trader:

He joined up because Muslims believe that it is their birthright to have us infidels service their every whim and desire, in other words, we owed him an education and living and joining the US Military without any intention of fulfilling his obligation was part and parcel of that belief. The reason he went jihad was because he discovered to his shock and horror that the US Military had every intention of forcing him to fulfill those obligations regardless of what he thought his Islamic birthrights entitled him to.

He probably thinks he has a RIGHT to a ‘free’ medical education. And why not? The Left thinks we all have a RIGHT to ‘free’ medical care.

Phone, mail, e-mail your Senator and Congressmen. This move to socialism must be stopped. Get involved to support any conservative candidate running in your area. Sharing our displeasure and ideas here is just the first step in taking back our country from the control of the progressives.

    @ wolfie:

Muslims think of us infidels as the soil of the earth, and themselves as great trees. They will gather their nourishment from us and there is nothing we can or have any right to do about it. So yes, he did/does believe he had a Allah given right to a free medical education at our expense. After all, as a Muslim it is his Allah given right to enjoy the fruits of the labor of those whom Allah placed on this earth to serve the faithful.

Secret Service strained as leaders face more threats

I notice that farther down, the article quotes “The Southern Poverty Law Center” as a source:

The domestic threat is also growing, fueled in part by Obama’s election as the nation’s first black president, according to specialists who study homegrown radical movements.

Obama, who was given Secret Service protection 18 months before the election – the earliest ever for a presidential candidate – has been the target of more threats since his inauguration than his predecessors.

It seems to me as though George W. Bush got way more death threats during his 8 years than Obama has gotten in his first year – and nobody really seemed to care about Bush getting these threats, except for Laura Bush and some conservatives.

What rubbish. Many of these “dignitaries” should be required to hire their own private security. Why should it be up to the taxpayer to watch over every two bit America hating dictator who is allowed to travel here. Same goes for the domestic America haters. Foot yer own bill!

The Southern Poverty Law Center is another far-left front group that sees militias and Klan members behind every tree.

They have zero credibility on this topic.

Elie Wiesel on Tea Partier Signs: ‘Indecent and Disgusting’

Politics | Sat, Nov 7, 2009 at 9:47:24 am PST

Holocaust survivor and author Elie Wiesel condemned signs containing Holocaust imagery and antisemitic conspiracy theories, at Michele Bachmann’s “tea party” event last Thursday.

This coming from the asshole who calls climate skeptics “deniers”. I guess it’s ok when you’re on the left side of the issue.

And speaking of, after insisting that McIntyre’s criticisms of Mann were unfounded, we have this:

After a year of stonewalling, Mann has published an update at his “grey” Supplementary Information (not yet reported at PNAS) in which he acknowledges an “error” in his figure S8a as follows:

    What say you now, Chucky?

I am all for spending whatever it takes to protect the president. If he’s getting twice the threats, give him twice the security.

I really was amused when CJ began reading the SPLC bible and citing it chapter and verse like a good little schoolboy. The SPLC, despite what Chuckles thinks, is notoriously unreliable. No respectable left-wing academic would cite it as a source without mountains of corroboration.

I went to the Doctor the other day and I have either nerve damage on the side of my brain (not that anyone would notice !) or possibly epilepsy. Can ya help a Redneck out with a prayer or two? Thanks. Now to read the thread.:)

Umm, yea, but Chuckles isn’t an academic, let alone a scientist. In fact all evidence appears to suggest Chuckles just plain isn’t all that bright.

    @ wolfie:

Actually, if he’s getting twice the threats, they need to be investigating twice as many threats. The security itself is what it is. But paint me skeptical that he’s getting twice the threats. That’s too convenient a political talking point.

    Absolutely.

But the SPLC has no real interest in protecting the president. Hell, it would serve their interests if something were to actually happen to him.

Their motivation is to convince people that there is some shadowy right-wing movement out there that’s trying to take over America, which can only be stopped by implementing draconian new security measures (including new gun laws).
