Reposted from bottom of previous thread:
NPR was cooing all over the place about the 40th anniversary of Sesame Street today.
Here’s the thing, though; Sesame Street is supposed to be a means for inculcating literacy. It’s not. It doesn’t teach kids to read; it teaches them to watch TV. And the fast cutting and zip zap zoop stuff merely helps them develop a short attention span and an expectation that “education” = entertainment.
The most telling quote in the NPR feature was a CTW person saying that “the children are always right.” No, they’re not. They’re children. One of the problems with this country today is that the “children are always right” attitude has replaced recognition of the value of things like experience, and the knowledge that worthwhile things are not always easily acquired.
If you want music, you have to listen to this young lady singing with Andrea Bocelli! (BTW..I am gonna marry him when I grow up)

You don’t have to tell that to MY parents.
I employ teenagers for the most part and the lack of respect they have for older people (I mean like 35+) is amazing. I have to teach them they must give me respect or else. Not only am I twice their age, I am their boss. Its to the point now that all I have to do is give them “the look” and they snap out of their little attitudes real quick.

Well, given the importance of tomorrow;
In Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,
That mark our place; and in the sky
The larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lie
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow
In Flanders fields.

I just got a “real” cell phone (with internet) about 3 months ago. We had a “family” one a long while ago and hubby had one that was a no contract pay/minute. I had/still do my company issued B!tchberry (I hate it). My Aunt and Hubby are my only “favs” and I have yet to use any minutes that are not covered. Hubby has the 700 min (family plan) all to himself and this month has already used over half of those! lol. Now, the internet side of it – I am greatful that it is unlimited. I surf all over with it – it is difficult to post (not impossible), but work has really tightened security and have blocked a lot of sites. My new G1 will get me anywhere I need/want to go!
@ teacake:
Nope. There’s going to be a glut of Chinese goods on the market for years. Won’t be able to give the stuff away. I like the idea that there are multi-storey parking lots in China filled with cars the government bought in order to gas the economy. And we thought BHO buying GM was bad?

If it is going to be over before it is really an issue I don’t want to.

I just never had much to chat about and asked him why not just come over instead of calling. (He lived across the street) Well, he never called to chat ever again. Just 4 in the am calls to come over… which I hung up on him for that. Just no winning with that guy.

Very true. I am not against the death penalty, but this has got to be very difficult for the families of the victims and those he injured. I don’t know that I could witness an execution even if I was directly involved with the case. Just not wired that way. I will/have hunted, but not so much in recent years. Fishing – no problem. I had a bad hunting experience a long time ago and just don’t get any pleasure out of it. It was a clean kill, but the doe still had her yearling with it and the yearling wouldn’t leave “mom” – stuck. Can’t do it. Dove, same thing, once I learned that they mate for life – nope. Why, of course not! Why should they think it’s a big question? The House and Senate won’t be facing jail time, or lousy insurance, or any of the pleasures they have reserved for us peasants.
I’ve always liked FedEx better. They are more reliable, dependable, cheaper. Now I see why. They aren’t unionized. Fuck that UPS. Never did like them. They have always acted as if they are doing you a favor. Crushed boxes. Leave notes without knocking on the door, don’t show up.

John Keister cracks me up.
And that third guy is Bill Nye the Science Guy, the spokesman for the Union of Concerned Scientists. Seriously. He got into a climate debate with Richard Linzden once and came out looking like such an idiot, he’d have been better off saying that he wanted to see a real bra.

Not that bright when the tellyprompter ain’t on, is he?
Also, checked out Tammy Bruce’s site – think the link is at BGov – she had a very interesting take on Cao.

#184 – interesting. I didn’t know that about UPS and FedEx. Learn something new every day here on The Blogmocracy… that is really interesting though. Makes me think to use Fed Ex.

#192 – I LOVE the Blues Brothers! Snork, how’d you know?
@ savages_girl:
That was great! LOL!
I didn’t realize UPS was run by the truckers union thugs and FedEx wasn’t at all. Interesting! I’ve always used FedEx because the service was better and cheaper. Mystery revealed. I hope this gets out. Not a good time to go around destroying companies and jobs. Bastards.
@ snork:
#193 – OMG! Where do you find these?! Hysterical!
Well, folks, going to bid you all a good night. Off to watch a little tv before kicking off to bed.
Anyhow, one last post for the night. LOL I have this one lefty friend who really, only contact we’ve had for a long time is being on FB. He is out of the park left extreme. HIs posts make me pull my hair out! LOL
Anyhow, I just now decided enough was enough. He’s ranting about us stupid Americans and how racist we are and does anyone recall when some rednecks killed the Sikh. I clicked the hide button. Not sure I should delete him from the account though, that would be a bit hostile since he and I haven’t shared a conversation since obama showed up out of nowhere.
Nite. me too
@ teacake:
UPS started as a trucking company and FedEx started as a company that shipped primarily by air. So the unions at FedEx are the same as you find at airlines.

Republican candidates have stretched their lead over Democrats to six points in the Generic Congressional Ballot.
OK… So Chapter Two of “The Daedalus Effect (Ascension of an Empire)” is now up. I don’t know how to do multiple pages so ya have to scroll down to where it says Chapter Two, but anyway there is it…

and the Chinese generals didn’t care too much about the casualties they took when they used human wave tactics, either. They knew they were going to lose men– but they knew they were going to take the hill, too. The Dems are thinking the same way here.
@ snork:
Nice ! I always wondered how/where they carried enough fuel to…well, this puts it all in ‘perspective’.
Apropos to this thread…
Scratch 212. Wrong thread.
@ calcajun:
I think they figure the casualties will come back as czars. That only works to a certain point.
Hmm… apparently mafia has strong grip on Chicago area bureaucracy and unions. I just read article about Finnish paper mill company’s experiences, and it paints quite dark picture about Chicago area. Maine region gets much better rating, but Chicago is not on level expected of Western civilizations. Good thing that they did not get olympics.

Congrats Fist ! Nice to hear some good ol’ fashion, cheery news and it sounds like she puts a big ol’ smile on your face !
Gonna have to think of something other than ‘Mrs. Fist’ though – that is unless she like it !
