I’m a huge fan of the rock music of the 1960’s , 70’s and early 80’s and cannot stand the rap, hip hop crap that gets played over and over again at stadiums and on Saturday Night Live. What I am going to do is give examples of four great British bands (not including the Beatles) who were so influential in the music of that era (particularly the 1960’s) Keep in mind that most likely in these videos the bands are lip synching their songs!
The Dave Clark 5 (1963 – 1970)
The DC 5 actually gave the Beatles a run for their money as regards popularity. They also appeared 17 times on Ed Sullivan (a record). The band consisted of Dave Clark (drums), Mike Smith (vocalist and key boards), Lenny Davidson (lead guitar), Rick Huxley (bass) Dennis Payton (sax, harmonica,) They had a number of hits in the 1960’s (17 records on the Billboards top 40). Tragically Dennis Payton died of cancer and Mike Smith died in 2008– right before they were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
“Can’t You See that She’s Mine” was one of those hits and this is from the American TV show “Shindig” in 1964
The Yardbirds (1963 -68)
The Yardbirds were a group that is as much famous for the fabulous lead guitarists they had at different times (Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, then finally Jimmy Page). Still they had several hits and are worthy of being known for their music. Their music ran the gamut from Blues, to Rock to Psychedelic Rock. They were inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1992. This song “For Your Love” was the reason why Clapton left the band (March 1965) because as a “Blues” purist, he did not want to go into a pop direction. As a side note, doesn’t bassist Paul Samwell-Smith (59 seconds into clip) look like Ted Bundy while Beck (1:42 into the clip) looks like one of the Menendez Brothers? This clip also is from Shindig in 1965. On a tragic note, lead singer Keith Relf (the guy with the shades on) was electrocuted in 1976 while practicing on his electric guitar at home because it was not properly grounded.
Keith Relf – lead singer, harmonica
Jim McCarty – drums
Jeff Beck (lead guitar, accousitc guitar)
Paul Samwell-Smith – Bass guitar
Chris Dreja – Rhythm guitar
The Kinks (1963 – 1996)
The Kinks were another London based group that had a lasting impact on rock. The song Lola was about an incident where their manager unknowingly spent all night dancing at a Soho club with a transvestite. The Kinks wer e inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1990.
They band members changed frequently but here the members are
Ray Davies (lead singer0
Dave Davies (lead guitar)
Mick Avory (Drums)
John Dalton (bass guitar)
Jon Gosling (keyboards0
Brothers Ray and Dave were with the band throughout its 33 years.
This clip is from a May 1970 British TV show called “Top of the Pops” and it is hard to imagine that everyone there that night is now at least 60 years old (including the hot chick in the plaid mini skirt, white top, and 10 gallon cowboy hat dancing behind Ray Davies’s right shoulder).
Badfinger (1969 -75)
If you think that Badfinger sounds a lot like the Beatles there is a reason for that. They were mentored by the Beatles and Paul McCartney wrote their first hit (“Come and Get It”). Two members of the band came from Liverpool and two came from Swansea in Wales). Tragedy is the operative word for this fine band. Their U.S. business manager was corrupt and embezzled them blind. They literally were penniless. Keyboardist and lead singer Pete Ham committed suicide by hanging himself in 1975, in 1983 bassist Tom Evans also hanged himself and in 2005 drummer Mike Gibbins (who had relocated to Florida) died at the age of 56 of a heart attack. Only Lead guitarist Joey Molland of the four survives.
Band
Pete Ham – lead singer, keyboardist
Joey Molland – lead guitar
Tom evans – bass guitar
Mike Gibbins – drummer

I love the band outfits they would wear. Suits. All matching. ( speaking of DC5)
So different than the gold teeth and baggy jeans of today’s thugs.
second.
Heh heh heh.
You have excellent taste is music Speranza, this is my fav Badfinger tune:
I actually heard that Roger Waters wanted to tap Jeff Beck for Pink Floyd, but David Gilmour’s personal connection to Syd Barrett brought him into the fold quicker than Roger could drop a line to Beck.
As a Gilmour fan, I’m obviously pleased about how it turned out.
The Kinks are most definitely underappreciated, and dedicated followers of fashion.
Welcome to the breakfast show!
Badfinger made the song “Without You” which didn’t really obtain any real measure of success for them but then skyrocketed on the charts when it was covered by Harry Nilsson and Mariah Carey (#1 hits).
They were also on the Apple label and had close ties to Paul McCartney who wrote their smash hit “Come and get it” which is relegated to TV commercials these days. So sad.
I liked Weird Al’s parody of Lola better: Yoda
/I know, that makes me uncouth. Ah well

Is it me, or is he getting more and more mental? The HA thread rambles for pages and pages, and then he has a thread about Palin twittering ion instead of eon. That’s what’s called a typo. As if Chucklehead knows a futon from a neutron.
@ snork:
The obsession with comments left on other blogs is, bizarre to say the least. Apparently the right sucks because of a few cherry picked blog comments.
Maybe O/T since nobody seems to be around… Watching Kill Bill 1 & 2 (Charles probably thinks that’s a threat too), cool soundtrack.
@ snork:
He wondered today why Malkin didn’t delete over the top comments on her blog. Gee, maybe its because she has kids, a husband and a real career, that doesn’t revolve around the blogoshere.
@ snork:
Another Hot Air thread? Sheesh.
Oh, I couldn’t agree more, Speranza. Thanks so much for posting.
I get so disgusted that I want to puke when hearing “vocal vomit”, AKA RAP. By no means can it be called “music”. It is a completely different genre and can in no way be called “art”.
It is hideous beyond all human comprehension.
@ CynicalConservative:
Very entertaining movies. Enjoy.

@ AZfederalist:
Ha, good one AZfederalist!
After reconsidering, I will now call the so-called music CRAP (even though I still think “vocal vomit” is more appropriate).
Now, if we could only get that scaly guy who posts CRAP incessantly to take notice.

Aaaaaaaaaawhooooooooo !
This is a pretty cool rap tune, IMO :
Music?
You know who listened to music? Hitler.
you racists!

On a serious note, I’m thinking of picking the bass guitar back up again. I figure it’d give me something to focus on, maybe get me back into playing and find some folks to play with.
That’s too easy!
(Trying to embed a video.)
My personal favorite of the “British Invasion” in #26 above.
Because they could sing. Really sing.
Love Allan Clarke’s lead vocals. Love the harmonies.
But some say my taste is a little hokey.

It’s getting so bad, with racist conservative religious righty wing nuts that he may have to have one of his henchdorks do his cycling for him.
Any suggestions on which Igor?

Outstanding Wolfie; the lyric is beautiful, capturing the innocence and awkwardness of young adulthood.

What make of bass(es) do you have?

He and Sharmuta almost came to blows when she pointed out hateful rhetoric on Daily Kos on the Malkin thread on the 3rd comment. Like the good Sharmuta that she is, she apologized and promised eternal loyalty down thread.
By the way, here is some good music:
Bob Seger
Neil Diamond
What thread, I’d like to read that.

I’ve thought about getting the neck replaced, but I can buy a new acoustic/electric bass for about 100 or so dollars. Knockoff-brand.
I’m not so good as to feel my play being affected by brand. lol.

@ Abu Bin Squid:
Yup, all about feel. I’ve played with a few bands, had regular gigs for a couple churches, I enjoyed doing it, but bass guitar is different from the regular guitar…. you can sit there and pick away on a 6 string…. people know what song you’re playing.
Not QUITE the same with a bass. heh.
and with that…… one more listen to bob seger, and to bed I go.
Bob Seger and Neil Diamond have GOT to be 2 of the greatest singer-songwriters alive.
and neither of them get the credit they are due.

Charles Johnson ALLOWS members of his site to distribute ILLEGAL copies of E-Books.
He knows about it, he allows it and he covers up the evidence.
See http://bestofbothblogs.blogspot.com/2009/10/sharmuta-and-conservative-moonbat.html
The above post 106 was DELETED at LGF several hours later by Charles Foster Johnson.
Now…
So there you have it. Conservative Moonbat gives Sharmuta access to his personal server where he stores his ILLEGAL copies of E-Books.
Conservative Moonbat is the owner of another website that focuses on, well, “crazy people” and that site is an Amazon Associate.
Neither Shatmuta or Conservative Moonbat were blocked, banned or even timeouted for this blatent illegality.

I got into a grand total of 3 altercations with CJ himself. One of them was when he had a thread up accusing Pam Geller of threatening to kill him.
I don’t even remember the words she used, but she wrote something to the effect that he had done such and such and ought to be hung at sunrise. Something like that.
It was an obvious case of ordinary polemic—to anyone this side of a paranoid breakdown. He insisted she meant it literally. She was threatening violence against him!!!!! Oh noooooes!
I went searching through the archives and found two or three instances of him using similar phrases. I posted one and he went ballistic, so I dropped the subject.
@ wolfie:
He’s a victim, dont’cha know? Knowing him I bet he really thought she was lurking outside his house with a noose.

The problem over at LGF is the long time posters are scared to post anywhere else. look what happened to the Correspondence Committee people. They are RABID about not discussing any other blogs and still if you are a member there you get banned from LGF.
This is also due to people holding on to their “identity” I am Possum here, I have been other animals at other places over the last 15+ years on the ‘net.
The latest example here was Axegrinder, he registered to ask where others had gone and he got stealth banned from LGF.

My iPod has zero hip hop and rap crap – a lot of classic rock and blues from the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s
Derek and the Domino’s was a great group – only one album but what an album it was! I think that might have been Clapton’s bet work – Layla is a classic anthem.
Great early 70s band, saw them in London 1972. Too early am?

His ode to Patti Boyd? Has definitely stood the test of time.

Silence and a dumbfounded expression. She graduated from law school.

Of course her kids do not go to inner city public schools either.
@ vagabond trader:
A few years ago there was a story about some Southern liberal who moved to Brooklyn because she wanted her kids to experience “diversity” so her kids went to public school near where Ebbets Field used to be (Crown Heights). Well guess what? The kids were constantly mugged, chased and called vile anti-white terms and the mother was scratching her head like an idiot wondering why that happened. I wanted to tell her – “hey don’t use your kids for a social experiment to assuage your white guilt. What you did to your kids qualifies as child abuse!”
@ Speranza:
Her 9 yr old has a one on one tutor during school hours due to “learning disabilities” She bragged to me that he will probably grow up to be a moonbat like her.Wait til he gets a little older and tells Mom he prefers to work with his hands rather than go to university. Her other boy in college told her he is going to become a practicing Jew. Hope he moves to an Israeli “settlement.”
