Now Entering….The Lizardoid Zone

OK,  I know that these LGF flashbacks are getting a little played out, but it’s been a little while for me.  And, hey, I still follow you guys (even if it is just via twitter sometimes), and every so often something pops up that I think you might find amusing.  So…follow me…

TWEET!!!:

Lizardoid: Report: Bush Administration Released Two Al Qaeda Leaders Behind NW 253 Terror Plot http://bit.ly/4E1cOl

Crib notes:  Bad guys got released from gitmo. It’s Bush’s fault, and/or the Saudis…and he called it two years ago.

{{{ZOINKS}}}

And with that, you are transported to the alternate “called it two years ago” Lizardoid Universe.  This is a cute story, 2-something years in the making, folks:

Anyone remember that thread?   This is classic stuff.

For the record, I entered this one with a sort of disbelief, since there was nothing presented to back up the assertion.    It was just kinda blurted out there.  So, I basically went in the thread in progressive flame warrior mode, shrugged my shoulders, put my hands up, and laid a grenade on the lizard table (ya know, where they have their “gamy buttocks“).   The usual lizard swarm appeared.  (It’s kinda entertaining if you want to follow the timestamp and go back.  Of course, I conceded that “left” elements may have pushed for extending certain rights for the prisoners, but I kept coming back to the question of who actually released them.)

And as is written (for now) in the annals of “tough room”, there was a period of noble and deft swarm management on my part.  But, eventually…well,  I just couldn’t believe we were arguing about blaming the “left” for something that was obviously Bush territory.  So, I posted 351:

Crib notes:  For the last time.  If they’re released, the administration released them.  As in, the Bush administration.

The response was…disappointing:

Crib notes: You’re dumb.

If you continue follow the thread, you’ll see that I ducked out for a bit, and came back with some fact checking, and proved that it really was a matter that Bush’s DOD took on a case-by-case basis and often involved a lot of back-channel diplomacy (not with the “left”, of course, but with other nations).  And… pounced on again, I was.

After all, the Clairvoyant One had spoken.

Exit question: What do you suppose is the statute of limitations for “hat tips”?

You should write an email to Charles and ask him that! You called him out on it and now he back peddles and agrees with your view!

This is a beaut, ChenZhen. Thanks for the little trip down memory-lane. I remember following that discussion as it went on, though I don’t think I took part.

I recently noticed that Poormouth Charlie’s not blocking me from viewing his site anymore. Not that I will be giving him traffic, it’s all leftist-spew and AGW-bullshit anymore over there, but it’s interesting that he’s unblocking his Enemies List. Traffic must really be down, to overcome his paranoid hostility in this matter.

I wonder what would happen if someone were to point out to CJ that the Gitmo inmates who were released are probably also ones on whom we didn’t have enough legally admissable evidence to warrant a trial?

Given that a substantial number of them have turned out to be guilty as hell, what does he think we should do when the ones who are still there are tried in civilian court and are acquitted for the same reason? We’re pretty damn certain those guys are bad, since we’re still holding them.

I guess a few thousand dead infidels is just the price we’ll have to pay in order to avoid upsetting Charles…

    @ Dreamy in MN:

This is a banning offense. What’s funny is that this guy speaks for how we all feel!

I’m sorry to say, but torture per se is not evil. Torturing an innocent child or a harmless 80-year-old grandmother is evil. Torturing someone who has killed scores of innocents, is hellbent on killing scores of innocents, or has information on those who would kill scores of innocents isn’t evil, it’s a moral imperative. There’s nothing that we could do to this piece of shit that is beyond the pale. Nothing. Gouging his eyes out. Fine. Mutilating his genitals. No problem. Shoving an electric drill up his ass. I’m all for it. Moreover, I’d be the first to sign up to levy this type of punishment and wouldn’t feel like I was debasing myself at all.

Feeling holier than thou because we as a country profess horror at torturing terrorists is laughable (although I guarantee you no one that watches NASCAR or NFL football, i.e., the majority of Americans, would give a shit if we tortured the fuck out of these animals). We’re making ourselves marginally more vulnerable to becoming extinct by fighting with both hands tied behind our back, while our enemies put no such constraints on themselves, and then mock us for our weakness. Our enemies actually understand the concept of self-preservation when it comes to their culture, whereas we don’t. Meaning we’ve become “that guy,” you know, the one you can mock to his face without him knowing it. Which is to say, we’re fucking pathetic.

This must be my 3rd or so comment over the many years religiously reading LGF (the 1st comment was “hello world” and 2nd may have been some important news story that hasn’t yet been mentioned at LGF at the time). I don’t participate in discussion groups. This may very well end up being “exhibit C” for “Criticizing Charles” and may get me banned from the site, but to be perfectly honest, I don’t care any more.
I am not a liberal or conservative, I am not a republican or a democrat (nor do I care to make this soliloquy grammatically correct) , I am just a regular guy who is appalled by what this site has become.

    1. Charles, I think it is pathetic that you conciser yourself the unquestionable moral authority. You have become drunk with power (I suppose running a blog is powerful stuff, and absolute power to ban people must be absolutely corrupting)
    2. I think it is pathetic that you spend your valuable time not only reading every comment on LGF in case someone utters something “hateful” (in your supreme opinion), but you actually go through comments on other sites (which apparently don’t have the time or desire to moderate every comment). Yes, it is equally pathetic that I am writing this in the first place.
    3. I think you have become as much as a wingnut as you liberally call every person who disagrees with you. As the banned person pointed out, most people do not enjoy or condone torture, but I honestly think you fell prey to the same shortsightedness as those you ridicule. Have you forgotten what steps were taken in WWII to ensure you, me, and everyone else who enjoys the liberties of this great country did not end up as a lamp shade? Did you forget Hiroshima? Nagasaki? Dresden? Berlin? It is absolutely SICKENING to see how far your game of devil’s advocate has allowed you to sink. You might as well petition for membership in ACORN (after all, no wrongdoing was found during the investigations)

The bottom line on the subject of torture in my humble opinion: It is unpleasant, it is violent, it is perhaps immoral, but when you are dealing with “people” who would fly planes with hundreds of people into buildings with thousands more, if there is one innocent life to be saved by employing “enhanced interrogation techniques”, I am 100% for it. Now ban away…”

In the first Gulf War, Iraqi forces surrendered to us whole battalions at a time, because they knew they’d be treated decent and sent home. We didn’t even have to lock them up, we just laid down a rope around a section of desert and said “stand in there, that’s your prison for the duration.” And they were cooperative about sitting there and waiting. We had zero KIA in that conflict; our only deaths were from one missile that hit a camp near the back lines, and some vehicle accidents.

Ever since Abu Ghraib and Bagram… nobody surrenders to us anymore. They’d rather fight to the death, and that’s meant a lot of deaths on our side. And the people we’re fighting have had a huge recruitment draw.

I remain convinced that torturing our prisoners has cost more American lives than it’s saved.

Funny…I know for a fact that at one point, we had over 23,000 detainees at Camp Bucca alone. And that wasn’t the only detention facility in Iraq (not to mention the ones in Afghanistan).

Where does he think all those people came from, if they didn’t surrender?

Right. The current position may be technically correct, and the former one may have had a large element of truth to it also, but neither position of his was very insightful. One problem that Bush had was the bureaucracy not following policy. With Obama, I think there’s a similar problem, but it’s different people being wayward. Either way, what is directed at the top probably didn’t play very much into what ended up being done. Such are bureaucracies.

    I’m with you!

What’s really amazing about the subject of torture is that the U.S. is agonizing over acts that don’t actually fall into the definition of real torture.

Waterboarding is scary, so some people call it torture. Keeping people up all night with loud music blasting at them is annoying and upsetting, so some people call it torture.

When the Arabs who call themselves “Palestinians” decide to torture someone for being a possible collaborator with Israel, the person ends up hanging upside down from a lamp post with his entrails spilling down the street.

When Hamas was fighting against Fatah in Gaza, they threw living people off the tops of tall buildings to crash to their deaths on the street. They held Fatah men’s legs in 45 degree angles off the ground so that a guy with a club could break them (both legs) on all parts of the legs including the knees.

When they perform lynchings, eyes are definitely gouged out and faces are smashed in. The intestines are removed and paraded up and down the street while the final remains are burned.

These things are done WITHOUT having the kind of urgency of saving thousands (maybe millions) of lives that we have when we go up against terrorists who are determined to murder as many of us as possible.

We have no need to be agonizing over how terrorists are treated when we can get information that will save lives. We’ll never be parading intestines down the street, but a little scary waterboarding or even physical pain is not out of line when it comes to enemies who aim to kill as many of us (men, women and children) as they possibly can.

With disgustingly predictability, the posters there are justifying their being banned by expressing support for rcm.

I like to chuckle at the threads where they get all excited when we have a good left/right discussion going. They think that such discussions will produce a flounce from a long time “true” conservative on here. I’m sure it does not occur to them that our conservatives would rather shove a wet noodle up a wild tigers ass in a phone bouth that post on their cesspool.

“Our conservatives”? As if there are any actual conservatives left in that circle-jerk…

Seriously, wife and I are driving out on Wildcat Canyon Rd. here in San Diego about 20 years ago to camp out in a 1990 Honda Civic. Saw a dark shape in the road–a VERY large bull in the middle of the road. If I had hit him, he would would have ended up in the passenger compartment and crushed us. Cattle and cars don’t mix.

It’s pretty obvious that most people who agonize over such things have never (and probably will never) had to fight for their lives.

If they had, they’d understand that the time for such reflection is after the threat is past.

When you spend all your time worrying about what your enemy is going to think of your tactics, it becomes irrelevant, because your enemy is busy figuring out how to kill you.

    @ lobo91:

    Very factually inaccurate, alright:

In the first Gulf War, Iraqi forces surrendered to us whole battalions at a time, because they knew they’d be treated decent and sent home. We didn’t even have to lock them up, we just laid down a rope around a section of desert and said “stand in there, that’s your prison for the duration.” And they were cooperative about sitting there and waiting. We had zero KIA in that conflict; our only deaths were from one missile that hit a camp near the back lines, and some vehicle accidents.

The Iraqi soldiers were conscripts who would have had their ears chopped off by Saddam’s forces if they didn’t show up to fight. They were chanting “George Bush! George Bush!” when they surrendered to U.S. news crews in exchange for water, for goodness sake.

The terrorists in the Iraq War have NOT been conscripts who would surrender at the first opportunity. The terrorists who have been blowing up Iraqi civilians at food markets all these years are the people who have been expecting to become the next Saddam Husseins (or work closely with them).

These terrorists have been trying to control Iraq so that they would have $400-500 billion in yearly oil revenues all to themselves to spend on global terror. This is why they don’t surrender. They have huge goals and they think they’re going to end up ruling the world after destroying the west.

Liberals have NO idea what’s really going on with global terrorism.

I’ve started to identify with O’Brien, especially during the Dominion War. Maybe it’s because he’s a senior enlisted man, and I’m a sergeant major.

Or it could be the fact that he sees a lot fewer shades of gray then the rest of them. The Dominion wants to kill him, his wife, and their kids. He just wants to be left alone. The easiest way for him to be left alone is to beat the Dominion. He really doesn’t seem to care much what the Jem’Hadar soldiers think about that.

    Makes sense to me.

That’s why we’re having Obamacare…. because you’re too stupid to know that you’re required to spend money you work hard for on people who don’t work, won’t work, or work but choose to not provide for themselves in a responsible way.

The incentive here is to work for cash, under the table, or not work at all.

Taxes are a disincentive. Whatever they’re applied to becomes a negative experience and when you tax one’s income, or produce taxes based on income, you make getting income out to be a bad thing.

That’s why I support a straight sales tax as a replacement for income tax (our government wants both!), to restrain reckless spending. It will encourage people to save rather than spend and that’ll lead to people who have less of a dependence on social security.

It’ll also gut out the IRS, reducing both their power and the money spent keeping the IRS running. (One of our largest expenses)

Yup, and the left will justify it as “At least money is given.”

They have no problem with the idea that by taking money from X and giving it to Y without the permission of X, they’re stating that American citizens do not have a right to their own money, that it is a priviledge to receive payment in exchange for labor and that they get what is ‘left over’ after the government decides what to do with their money first.

And yet they rail on raising the minimum wage. Why? It just gives the government more money to take.

If we won’t be big enough to own up when they’re right, we don’t have much room to point out when they’re wrong.

Besides, I’ve opposed releasing folks from Gitmo from the beginning…you don’t release prisoners of war (even if they are illegal enemy combatants) until the war is over.

As far as I am concerned, the really bothersome part is not that Bush released folks from Gitmo who ended up going back into the service of Jihad (I expect them to do that)

but that like Anakin Skywalker serving the Emperor, the transformation is complete with Charles, per his thread:

I’ve been undecided on the issue of trying Gitmo detainees for a long time — but I’m now in favor of trying the Gitmo detainees in civilian court, throwing the book at them, and locking them up after they’ve been given due process, and convicted, and no one can complain any more.

He then goes on to say that if they aren’t convicted in civilian court, it is because there wasn’t enough evidence to convict them.

Seems to me that being arrested trying to kill our soldiers is quites sufficient for me, but I guess I think about those things and Charles just worries about not offending terrorists.

“The owners of the store in court swear the P.E.T.A. inside guy they hired not knowing he was a plant by P.E.T.A. , was the person who was responsible for feeding the pets, and that he did not feed them in order to enable the P.E.T.A. big wigs to get the cops in the deal.”

the trick, I think, is that ‘conservatism’ has shifted so much into the dominionist territory that people that consider themselves conservatives (or haven’t made the break yet) easily get offended by descriptions of the current situation.

Have you read Barry Goldwater? Do I have to start whipping out Goldwater quotes again?

You’re damn straight that Goldwater Conservatives get pissed, and for good reason. They stole our name, hijacked our movement, and now we’re not even welcome in the party. You’re damn straight it’s offensive.
