Right Wing Flame War!

The New York Times features an article about Chuckles and its a good one. Mentions almost everyone of note on the blogosphere, including Theblogmocracy! haha

THE QUESTIONING OF Johnson’s tactics started to come not just from without L.G.F. but also from within. Readers both casual and loyal spoke up in the comment threads to ask, sometimes diplomatically and sometimes not, whether all this casual flinging of epithets like “fascist” wasn’t maybe an overreaction. Johnson’s response, in thousands of cases, was to block their accounts and ban some of them from viewing the blog. “Get off my Web site” was a common farewell. (Johnson insists that this is not true — that no one has ever been banned from L.G.F. merely for disagreeing with him — but the anecdotal evidence to the contrary is voluminous, and the fact that the offending comments were instantly and permanently deleted makes it impossible to check others’ records against his.)

“Running a community is hard,” says Markos Moulitsas of the liberal Web site Daily Kos, “and I don’t criticize people for the approaches they take in trying to control their sites. As I tell my own disgruntled commenters, if they don’t like a site’s comment policies, they can always find greener pastures elsewhere. It’s a big Internet.”

A reasonable approach, which L.G.F.’s exiles mostly rejected. Comment threads all over the blogosphere were hijacked by people sharing stories of their banishment. Another stalker blog — this one assailing Johnson from the right — sprang up, administered by banned former “Lizards,” as L.G.F.’s registrants are known. Johnson responded by posting those former registrants’ real names and photographs on L.G.F. — an astounding breach of civility on the Internet, where anonymity is often prized above all else.

The article is an interview of Charles by Jonathan Dee of the NY Times on January 21, 2010.

Kids, we just hit the big time! Thanks to everyone that has been onboard here.

Comments are the sole opinion of the comment writer, just as each thread posted is the sole opinion or post idea of the administrator that posted it or of the readers that have written guest posts for the Blogmocracy.

Obscene, abusive, or annoying remarks may be deleted or moved to spam for admin review, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their content by any other commenter or the admins of this Blogmocracy.

We're not easily offended and don't want people to think they have to walk on eggshells around here (like at another place that shall remain nameless) but of course, there is a limit to everything.

Play nice!

posting much more often than he used to about references to himself elsewhere on the Internet and breaking into comment threads (a recent one was about the relative merits of top- versus front-loaded washing machines) to call commenters’ attention to yet another attack on him that was posted at some other site. On the home page, you can click to see the Top 10 comments of the day, as voted on by registered users; typically, half of those comments will be from Johnson himself.

The U.P.S. man who delivered packages to his door while I was there, and his truck, may have been hired for the day just to snow me; the decidedly un-Mata-Hari-like woman he introduced to me as his fiancée, who brought us water and fruit as we talked in his small home office, may have been a member of the Trilateral Commission.

    The ice crystal?

  11. 11 | January 22, 2010 8:09 pm

    @ snork:

He is, as he reminds them, always watching. L.G.F. still has more than 34,000 registered users, but the comment threads are dominated by the same two dozen or so names. And a handful of those have been empowered by Johnson sub rosa to watch as well — to delete critical comments and, if necessary, to recommend the offenders for banishment. It is a cult of personality — not that there’s any compelling reason, really, that it or any blog should be presumed to be anything else.

    So true!

  13. 13 | January 22, 2010 8:10 pm

    The Jazz Artist isn’t happy!

Shrieking harpy said what? “He’s a traitor, a turncoat, a plant. We may not know for years what actually happened.”

I have a few significant disagreements with the angle taken by Jonathan Dee in his profile for the New York Times, most of all his willingness to accept unverifiable anecdotal information from people who post comments on the Internet under fake names, to claim that their LGF accounts were blocked simply for disagreeing with me — a claim which, in the vast majority of cases, is simply not true.

It’s a little odd to point out at the beginning of the article that there were extremist comments posted at LGF in the early days of the blog, but then turn around and imply that I’m over-reacting today by taking a firmer hand toward policing said comments and commenters. Damned if you don’t, and damned if you do.

Another nitpick: Dee implies that I link too much to blog posts and articles about myself — does that mean I shouldn’t link to his NYT article? Since I’m the guy whose name is on this blog, should I just ignore everything written about me? Or should I occasionally respond to the posts on other blogs that call me out by my real name?

Note that if you go through the articles that appear on LGF’s front page, only a very tiny percentage fit Dee’s description; I consciously try to keep those “meta” posts to a minimum.

Guess I shouldn’t complain too much, though; I expected a negative tilt after some of the things I’ve written about the New York Times over the past decade. Could have been worse.

Johnson says that the peak was somewhere around half a million page views per day. (Over the past year or so, it has averaged about one-fifth that many.)

Banning everyone that doesn’t bow to you does that.

Just to set the record straight. The claim that Mad King Charles (MKC) never banned anyone for disagreeing with him is an outright lie. I was banned for up-dinging a poster that disagreed with MKC.

I really would like to know the story of how MKC managed to get his sorry ass thrown out of a company he was supposed to be a co-founder of (PJM). Too bad the NY Times didn’t have the guts to ask about that. It was around that time that the Lizard King began his decent into madness.

It’s funny in a sad way to watch him frail about searching for a direction when he has no moral compass. The Left will never accept him and the Right will never forgive him. He is on his own and has no one to blame but himself.

The second Ace Post – What Has Happened To Little Green Footballs?
The Third Ace Post – And There You Go: Charles Johnson Spins for Van Jones
    lgfbannedandblocked
    as well as here…

Really, there are SO many, just google Little Green Footballs + banned! The pattern is clear. Banned, and blocked for updinging or downdinging the wrong comment, banned for polite disagreement, banned for asking if he was ok…

The fact is that it was the comments in the threads that made it fun, interesting and informative. People shared their expertise, and their experiences as well as their opinions – some made outrageous comments but it was in good fun, and known to be in good fun. Rollicking arguments were part of the fun, and people honed their arguments for the real world.

That’s all gone now. Freedom of speech does not exist at LGF.

But lasting friendships were made – and those of us who were banned found ways to reconnect. Here – and at Table 9, and a few other places across the net. Here, free speech flourishes, and without the sniping that was encouraged at LGF.

Repost from the end of the last thread.

Chucky gets 2 writeups in one day: Vanity Fair article

CJ and the article’s author are planning to launch “a two-pronged campaign by which we hope to increase both the reach and efficiency of the blogosphere, as well as to bring pressure to bear on the media at large.”

As Johnson recently reminded me, he once attempted a similar improvement on the blogosphere in 2004 by co-founding the conservative blog compendium Pajamas Media. He later repudiated it as “just another right-wing parrot organization” and sold off his share in 2007. I suggested to him that, in contrast to that particular project, we try to recruit bloggers who aren’t completely deranged.

I, along with a bunch of others from the Lounge, was banned for UPDINGING Eric Cartman’s Conscience on one of the vax threads. Eric Cartman’s Conscience was defending a Dad who dared voice his experience with his own child, who was being attacked by the GANGDINGERS. We, in the Lounge, decided to UPDING the guy back to even – you know what that means. We knew we were risking banishment.

The next day, most all of us were banned/blocked. We managed to reconnect, one by one, and we opened our own Lounge, Table 9. We set out to let our friends know what had happened and where we were – and he closed his own Lounge over it.

Were we plotting against him? No. Were we talking shit about him? I was. But others weren’t.

Slowly we managed to find a couple hundred of the banned, since then, I have lost count.

But we were banned for UPDINGING, and we are still looking for missing friends. Table 9 is in the sidebar here, and it is always good to see you guys.

Interesting. They recalculated the affinities at Quantcast. Now,

This site reaches over 120K monthly people, of which 92,470 (77%) are in the U.S. The site appeals to a more affluent, more educated, heavily male, middle aged group. The typical visitor listens to National Public Radio and reads Wired Magazine.

    Audience Also Likes

The people who visit littlegreenfootballs.com are also likely to visit these categories and sites:

    Affinity

    Nonprofit

    National Public Radi… 20.4x

    PBS 13.4x

    American Cancer Soci… 13.4x

    The Library of Congr… 1.7x

    Science & Technology

    livescience.com 2.3x

    Science/Nature

    New Scientist 7.7x

    ScienceDaily 2.6x

    livescience.com 2.3x

That’s a pretty dramatic change. And as anyone who has read my science oriented threads knows, “New Scientist” is left-wing junk, Wired is mostly junk, and livescience is pretty lightweight. I don’t know anything about ScienceDaily, but I think it’s also pretty lightweight. Like the dilettantes at 1.0.

    From the article:

“…unlike most other bloggers — who know as much about the technical workings of their medium as a poet is likely to know about a printing press — he had the wherewithal to create, almost instantly, an animated .gif image…”

CJ was a genius to be able to create an animated .gif of images sent him by other lizards. I’ve changed my opinion of him. He’s up to the level my daughter was in 5th grade.

That NYT article is spot on in many ways, though.

For Whom Does the Paperboy Toll?

Blogosphere | Fri, Jan 22, 2010 at 6:56:04 pm PST

Shrieking harpy said what? “He’s a traitor, a turncoat, a plant. We may not know for years what actually happened.”

    Insert sigh.

Damned if you don’t, then damned if you do.

A while back I decided it’s best to occasionally respond, especially when there are factual issues at stake (not just ad hominem nonsense), because the best way to deal with defamatory statements on the Internet is to make sure your defense shows up in a Google search too.

That wiki article is bullshit, Chorizo (Spain) or Chouriço Linguiça (Portugal) Is traditionally made from the shoulder or butt, certain varieties are smoked and others are cured for long storage without spoiling.

Families get together in the fall for the annual matanza (slaughter)of several hogs most of the meat is turned into different varieties of sausages including morcela (blood pudding) and smoked chops and hams.

I have several pounds of the sausage here I pick up once a month in Newark NJ in the Iron Bound Section, (Little Portugal)

Just about every other day I enjoy a link or two of Chouriço, either fried with eggs grilled wrapped in aluminum foil to keep the juices in or just plain raw, yes raw, with hot sauce.

Charles does ban people who disagree with him. I watched him do it many times. Some deserved it many definitely did not. Charles had a sense of HIS blog, he did not have a sense of the community active there.

If you disagreed with him about a subject matter that he held closely like creationism, or something he over broadly latched onto as racists or fascist, then you became a target. The cronies would work the angles. And some day he found the reason to get rid of you as a poster.

Then to cement the deal there would be a post about how many socks you had trying to get back into the blog. And that you sent him a nasty gram that he couldn’t publish. The majority of the time that was just fiction.

Excellent article. Very much spot on.

As for my banning, it was due to disagreeing with Sharmuta on how she handled the CiJ banning. Their reason for that was simply untruthful, but then again, they can ban for whatever reasons. What I did object to was the behaviour unbecoming to someone in position of authority. The language was foul. And… so I was banned.

Just one tiny point I noticed (and I haven’t read all of these comments so this may be old hat.) In a recent L. A. (Johnson insists that this is not true — that no one has ever been banned from L.G.F. merely for disagreeing with him.

most of all his willingness to accept unverifiable anecdotal information from people who post comments on the Internet under fake names, to claim that their LGF accounts were blocked simply for disagreeing with me — a claim which, in the vast majority of cases, is simply not true.

Charles, you are just flat out dishonest.

Like TFK mentioned up thread, you banned Realwest for no reason whatsoever. Because him, and some other folks were thinking about starting their own blog? I can defend him unequivocally, they were looking for another place to meet, with the rules being no mention of LGF. You still banned him. As well, your neurotic butt kisser was bitching and moaning about all you did for him, and this is the respect that Charles Johnson gets?

    Go to hell Charles.

You banned numerous people who did nothing at all. I dare you, if you are a man of your word, state why you banned me. Don’t get me wrong, I know I was not really posting too much during the last few weeks before I could not log on anymore, but I never got a reason why my account was blocked. (Or the very simple email I sent to you asking, “what did I do”.)

I have some very good ideas, and still wonder why Chatham Breezes never made it off the ground. (Well, I don’t to be honest, I could really care less)

Nonetheless, you are a liar. You are dishonest. You refuse to debate the facts.

Just like Sharmuta on an open thread, it becomes me, me, me, me. You bellyache when you get a little critical press, and everyone is out to get you.

Still, if you read L.G.F. today, you will find it hard to miss the paradox that a site whose origins, and whose greatest crisis, were rooted in opposition to totalitarianism now reads at times like a blog version of “Animal Farm.” Johnson seems obsessed with what others think of him, posting much more often than he used to about references to himself elsewhere on the Internet

This is a serious charge. How come CJ did not respond to this?

And “usually I don’t censor if I disagree with the post”? And what sort of answer is that?

Am I going to be banned now? Please clarify.

    Ace chimes in
Oh My: NYT Profiles Charles Johnson

I know what you’re thinking, as I thought that too — Funny, but why is it when LGF was getting 500,000 hits a day on the right, he wasn’t worth a profile, and now that he’s getting 100,000 or less and on the left, he is?

Yeah, that’s true. That’s probably why they commissioned the piece.

A funny thing happened on the way to publishing it, though.

They discovered he’s kind of a dick.

No one ever said L.G.F., or any blog, had to be about the free exchange of ideas. “It’s his sandbox,” Pamela Geller says simply. “He can do whatever he wants.” Still, if you read L.G.F. today, you will find it hard to miss the paradox that a site whose origins, and whose greatest crisis, were rooted in opposition to totalitarianism now reads at times like a blog version of “Animal Farm.” Johnson seems obsessed with what others think of him, posting much more often than he used to about references to himself elsewhere on the Internet and breaking into comment threads (a recent one was about the relative merits of top- versus front-loaded washing machines) to call commenters’ attention to yet another attack on him that was posted at some other site. On the home page, you can click to see the Top 10 comments of the day, as voted on by registered users; typically, half of those comments will be from Johnson himself. Even longtime commenters have been disappeared for one wrong remark, or one too many, and when it comes to wondering where they went or why, a kind of fearful self-censorship obtains. He has banned readers because he has seen them commenting on other sites of which he does not approve.

“This is one area where I did change,” Johnson admitted. “I realized you can’t just let it be free speech. It doesn’t work that way on the Internet. Total free speech is a recipe for anarchy when people can’t see each other.”

And oh dear: Check out this dead-bang center shot at the target:

IN THE LAST DAY of November, Johnson delivered the final blow to his old alliances. In a post that he said took him about three minutes to write, he listed 10 reasons “Why I Parted Ways With the Right.” The “reasons” themselves amounted to little more than laundry lists: “Support for conspiracy theories and hate speech (see: Alex Jones, Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Birthers, creationists, climate deniers, etc.),” for instance. In the voluminous comment thread attached, Johnson was characteristically interested less in discussing the break itself than in discussing the reaction to it — calling readers’ attention to the number of times it was “re-tweeted,” linking to attacks on him, citing praise from quarters that not long ago would have considered him toxic.

An utterly meaningless number. I suspect that’s everyone that ever registered since registration started minus those actually banned. Most of them are years and years old and never posted a single comment. Power Line Forum had pages and pages of such people. 348. DEZ
    350 | January 23, 2010 10:51 am

CJ made a conscious decision to attract the liberals to his site, and there was a major barrier in that plan.
Liberals will never gather in large numbers on a site that is considered conservative and heavily populated by conservatives.
That meant a heavy purge had to be committed, and it was.
CJ banned large chunks of his registered users at once, sometimes the numbers were small, but sometimes they were devastating.
Posters that had not commented in months were simply vanished, and well respected posters were banished simply for having political views abhorrent to liberals.
What was left after his rampant nuking was a few pet conservatives for his new ravenous moonbats to pile on and down ding.
Many of us were not banned for disagreeing openly, we were banned so his libtards audience could be attracted and or empowered.
We will never know how many of the meeker lizards that seldom if ever posted were vanished, but you can bet the number is in the thousands, as they could be flushed with little if any notice or fanfare.

The price has been paid, what is left of a once powerful blog, is now a smorgasbord board of smug intolerance.

You know it’s bad when the New York Times thinks a leftie is nuts.
I am one of the latest posters to be banned from Charles Johnson’s site, Little Green Footballs. I removed him from my blogroll and will no longer link to or visit his site. Charles was never a really a conservative… he is a 9/11 Democrat.

About 2 years ago, he got on an anti-creationist tangent that pretty much consumed his daily life. I’m agnostic, so it didn’t bother me.

But since then, he’s gone into the abyss of a pre-9/11 mindset, and it’s flooded every niche of his blog.
It’s a shame because LGF used to be a good site. Johnson was one of the bloggers who exposed Dan Rather’s ‘genuine’ George W. Bush National Guard memos, and the enhanced Iranian missiles fauxtography.

I was booted for supporting the Tea Parties, and critiquing the downward spiral of his site:

I watch Glenn Beck and visited LGF for basically the same reasons: to get commentary, information, and news on politics and issues that as a Republican, I feel are important.

I’m not sure when the turning point was, but LGF has morphed from a site where united conservatives could gather against the lunacy of the MSM, to something unrecognizable. It’s now comprised of a lot of backbiting targeted at people who take national security, Islamofascism, and the socialist Obamanation seriously. There are some people on here who think because I’m an Iraq War/Army veteran, outspoken Obama critic, anti-illegal alien, and a gun owner, I’m a “security threat” to the Obama State.

    It’s sad and pathetic.

His erratic behavior has alienated him from people like Pam Geller of Atlas Shrugged and Robert Spencer of Jihad Watch. (http://www.jihadwatch.org/archives/025667.php) He’s also attacked other prominent sites and bloggers: Ace of Spades, Michelle Malkin, Hot Air, Protein Wisdom, Powerline, Mark Steyn, Geert Wilders, and Dennis Praeger.

He tolerates no dissent, real debate is forbidden, and his enemies list rivals Bill Clinton’s FBI files. He sees nazis behind every door, and probably hiding under his bed. And those are just the people who don’t agree with him 100%. He’s been known to ban people for disagreeing with him on other sites. The man’s paranoia level is skyhigh.

Johnson has become increasingly sycophantic towards Islamofascism, which is ironic given the fact that he received death threats from jihadis, right around the time when CAIR wanted to get LGF classified as a “hate site”.

He has whole-heartedly embraced Janet Napolitano’s idiotic “right-wing” threat assessment, assigned creationists to be bigger villains than terrorists, and disparages ordinary citizens who protest Obama’s socialist policies.

Just what the leftwing needs; an Andrew Sullivan clone.
