“Fact-Checking the New York Times”? …Please

by ChenZhen ( 133 Comments › )
Filed under Blogwars, LGF at January 23rd, 2010 - 9:41 pm

Recently, netizens across the blogosphere were treated to an interesting piece on the NYT‘s website, which made an attempt to summarize the drama that has played out over the past couple of years in our little corner of the interwebs.  As I sat and read it, I noted that while there were many points made by the author (Jonathan Dee) that hit the nail on the proverbial head, there were others that seemed like trivial criticism (if one can call it that).  One example of the latter was this pronouncement:

L.G.F. still has more than 34,000 registered users, but the comment threads are dominated by the same two dozen or so names.

I say trivial because, well, the bolded section probably characterizes virtually every blog and message board out there.   Given the context of the site in question  (it’s popularity, and the time span involved in generating the numbers), I wasn’t sure that it really meant anything.  I basically shrugged my shoulders, and read on.  There were certainly juicier nuggets in there, as it turned out.

However, today, I couldn’t help but notice (and who wouldn’t; it’s highlighted in pink at the top of the page) that CJ took issue (<–that link should work, BTW) with that particular line.  I guess I shouldn’t be that surprised.  After all, as we’ve learned, in CJ’s world, he is special.  He wants everyone to know he’s special.  And if necessary, he’s willing to pull out his MySQL search kung fu in a hilarious attempt to try to prove it.

Out of all of the scathing stuff posted in Dee’s piece, only a straw-grasping egomaniac would venture a rebuttal by posting this:

Of course, one doesn’t need to be Nate Silver to know that this attempt at a “fact-check” is an utter load.  Heck, I gotta think that anyone who posesses more than a pair of firing synapses could see that.   With no reference to the total number of comments, threads (i.e. “discussions”), or the prominent 24 commenters, an excersise that concludes that there are a bunch of netizens that average a mere 3 comments per day on his blog doesn’t refute what Mr. Dee stated at all.   Not one bit.  Sure, the mouth-breathing sycophants that still inhabit the site might eat it up, but by ”fact check” standards, it amounts to nothing more than a statistical smokescreeen.

Judging by the pseudo-NUMB3RSesque response, one would think that CJ would have no problem addressing the -again, rather meaningless- assertion directly.   But he didn’t.  Why?

So, since Dee threw out the number “two dozen”, and since LGF’s memory apparently expands to at least the last 30 days,  I hereby present the obvious, junior high level, fill-in-the-blank question to CJ, in the true spirit of “fact-checking”:

In the past 30 days, the top two dozen posters at LGF have contributed ___% of the total comments.

Not exactly requiring an essay.

Exit question:  In the unlikely event that CJ actually divulges this, can anyone guess the number?

Comments

Comments and respectful debate are both welcome and encouraged.

Comments are the sole opinion of the comment writer, just as each thread posted is the sole opinion or post idea of the administrator that posted it or of the readers that have written guest posts for the Blogmocracy.

Obscene, abusive, or annoying remarks may be deleted or moved to spam for admin review, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their content by any other commenter or the admins of this Blogmocracy.

We're not easily offended and don't want people to think they have to walk on eggshells around here (like at another place that shall remain nameless) but of course, there is a limit to everything.

Play nice!

And note, btw, that Johnson pulled that 30-day period out of his posterior. Dee said absolutely zero about any period. And it matters, a lot. If you use the more reasonable per-thread basis, you get less than one dozen making over 50% of the comments.

Turns out that was a typo that self perpetuated, in fact it was ‘fist check my ass.’

another nugget in the climategate saga

The London Times continues to follow the glaciergate story–and it keeps getting worse.

The latest disclosure: Rajendra Pachauri, chairman of the UN’s (formerly) prestigious Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (known as the IPCC), may have raised millions of dollars for his New Delhi institute on the basis of the totally bogus ‘glaciergate’ claim by the IPCC that the Himalayan glaciers would melt by 2035

    Yes, Rush Limbaugh again.

This time he’s embroiled in a controversy over statements about “Wall Street bankers” (aka “Jews”).

Abe Foxman of the Anti-Defamation League issued a statement calling Limbaugh’s comments “borderline antisemitism.”

Now Ben Smith reports that Norman Podhoretz has ridden to Limbaugh’s defense and accused Foxman of ‘chutzpah’.

However if you want to judge a book by its cover… go ahead.

I haven’t read most of Das Kapital or any of Mein Kampf. I’ve written plenty about both based on what I’ve picked up from third party sources, however.

So you haven’t read two major works about progressive thought. Reading third party dissections though means that you are up on it. R..i..g..h..t……

That was his moment of excitement? 838 people in a month?

It’s a word meant to convey ‘progressive’, which is currently used by every hater on the right to mean “anyone who supported Obama, or fails to hate Obama, and everyone who is center, center left, left, Democrat, or just won’t sign on for the Full Metal Wingnut”.

It’s much favoured by those on the stalker blog.

Please excuse the downding, but that’s not it at all. Let me try to explain it from a sane conservative perspective:

There are some people unhappy with the changes here who aren’t mad at Charles. We know that he had to make it clear that the GOP was falling into the grips of fundies and conspriracy loons. I approve of that objective and I support Charles in so doing 100%. However, some of us (me included), are fairly bummed out that so many of the conservative lizards decided to flounce. The change in the poster’s ideological makeup has also made this a tougher room for conservatives. I wish my former friends had decided to think about who they were supporting, instead of flouncing, but they didn’t. So its not butthurt, but a real sense of anxiety over some very painful changes.

This interesting bit of legerdemain from one “Obdicut” (#13; 20 updings): “First of all, it’s an accusation against Obama that he’s using ‘the bankers’ to mean ‘The Jews’-- while simultaneously Rush is endorsing the stereotype, when he immediately says a lot of the people on Wall Street are Jewish.”

I.e., it’s “anti-semitic” to accuse Obama of latent antisemitism but it’s okay to accuse Rush of antisemitism for pointing out possible anti-semitism in Obama. Same game as calling anyone racist for accusing Obama of racism. The underlying assumption never to be questioned is that “of course” Obama can never be guilty of any such attitudes and how dare one even THINK that he ever might be.

And yes, a lot of people on Wall Street (as in Hollywood) ARE Jews for good or ill. Of course, calling a Jew a Jew is automatically anti-semitic since you’re not supposed to make note of the obvious unless (and this is even an iffy tactic) the observation is combined with simultaneous praise and obsequious gratitude.

Oh bullshit. If one is a conservative why would one want to hang out on Daily Kos Lite? Also if the “fundies” wre controlling the GOP,how the **** did the Repubs wind up with McCain? LGF was my cyber home for 6 -7 years because I felt comfortable there with my ideological kind. Why would I wnat to spend my time there now with iceweasel, wrenchwench, Gus 80s, talon_62 and other leftists who have invaded the place? I (and scores of others) were responsible for making LGF a great right/center place and have no desire to debate leftwingers at what used to be my “home”. If lefties took over theblogmocracy I would leave this place too. Bad enough I have to deal with liberals at the office every day.

Sharmuta must post 10% of the comments every day at LGF.

Charles is singularly responsible for the changes at LGF.I am not interested in debating Lefties at LGF, there were other more neutral sites on the internet where I could debate them. Charles went out of his way deliberately to get rid of the vast majority of his old time posters because they were too conservative. He was the one who stifled debate. People walk around on eggshells and Jonathan Dees was right, there is an “Animal Farm” atmospheres (I think “Lord of the Flies” is just as appropriate.

Rather then give him the pleasure of banning me I just left on my own. Most conservatives remained (thinking of Iron Fist) because they had been there so long I think there was an element of denial as to what was happening. Charles had every intention of getting rid of people who reminded him of what LGF used to be. By purging us he figuratively could purge the old Charles and start anew. I am a regular reader and frequent contributor to LGF. Yes there are some genuine looney-tunes on that blog with the whole “nuke-mecca” bit, but the OVERWHELMING majority of commentators do not support that (and say so rather vigorously)virtually every time one of the looney-tune arm chair generals gets going with his nuke ‘em ideas. There are scientists, doctors, lawyers, accontants, farmers, ranchers, office workers, police and military types, fire and rescue workers and others who post at LGF from literally all around the world. And we “fact check your ass” every time you make what appears to be a nonesense or hate statement. I’ve never read a blog that stands up more for homosexual, african-american, Latino American rights than the commentators at LGF. If some commentators go over the top, Charles does his best to delete them and if they are repeat offenders, bans them from LGF. But he averages 85,000 unique hits a day, with an average of 4,000 comments per day; that a few sneak in under the radar screen is hardly a surprise. And if you don’t enjoy a blog which genuninely celebrates free speech, where people disagree with you (and usually in a non-disagreeable tone) then please, please stay away from LGF. We neither need nor want you there.

I know many have made the point of not hearing about LGF anymore, more specifically Charles Johnson, and they have a valid point being he’s obviously shallow and callous. But Johnson provides me so much humor and curiosity, that is virtually impossible to not comment when he is in the news.

Seldom do I bother to psychoanalyze anybody or anyone. But I must admit that Johnson is such an oddity, for me it is like putting together the pieces of a puzzle of a badly constructed picture, or maybe like to trying to complete a crossword puzzle developed by a mad man.

I think I am now better at understand why people rubber neck during a wreck. Morbid curiosity always gets the better of me and is getting worse as I get older.

One thing I was not naive about during my stay at LGF. I was always sure that Johnson was a religious bigot, a big-time pro-choicer, and a narcissist. He tolerated me and many like me because was willing at the time to accept these fundamental differences in order to attract notoriety for himself -- even if he hated our guts. And he did. The one saving grace for me is that after 10,000 comments, I still hadn’t given him a dime, though out of guilt, I was tempted for a time.

But my biggest guilt? Though it may be completely coincidence, it was very shortly after my public slam on his own blog of his real nature of bigotry that he apparently went off the deep end. I really am sorry if I helped push him over the edge, because there is no doubt he has so damaged himself, unless medical reason there is no way he will recovery his mojo.

This NYT piece is actual reporting, unlike that LAT junk that simply spit up what Shmuck fed to them, including the almost certainly canned threat Johnson received during the “reporter’s” visit.

Importantly, I think it shows the kind of reception he’s received and will continue to receive from liberals. He’s another Rosie O’Donnell, who the liberals liked at first because of her slobbery sentimentality, but then they mostly abandoned her over time because she’s an ignorant boob.

I like how the reporter essentially said that Johnson was lying, and censoring to cover up that fact--of course he said so in a manner that wouldn’t allow for a successful libel lawsuit, or even tempt him to try for one.

Chuckles certainly misjudged the people he decided it would pay to suck up to. If he was an embarrassment to much of the right in the past, he’d be far and away a worse embarrassment to liberals, who mostly like his recent “conversion” (opportunism is the real word for it) because it affirms that they were right (or “right”--I’m not fighting issues here) all along.

“Thanks for saying so, Charles, now get your ignorant dictatorial ass down the road,” is the response he’s getting from liberals--at least aside from a few ignorant trolls at LAT and HuffPo (the latter is about as censorious as Chuckie), and they’ll end up following NYT in the end (they almost always do).

So much for moving up to a higher level of friends.

Chunky Johnson is now Dan Rather, and is pulling out the fake but accurate routine on the Himalaya report.

    @ Possum:

I haven’t gone through the thread after this comment so I can’t know if anyone addressed this.

Look under the comments for that Downfall video. You will see a comment by thunderK5 defending Charles. A simple expanding search from that user may be quite revealing. Did anyone know there is a user named Jimmah-Ice Productions?
Self-described: Jimmah-Ice Productions is a wholly owned subsidiary of the Progressive Attack Machine, specialising in tormenting wingnuts and the butthurt.
Professional Provocateurs, Paid Agitators, Wingnut Debunkers, Community Organisers, Gentleman Explorers, and small bets placed.

Remind you of anyone over at 1.0?

This is the company ‘The Husky Blogger’ keeps? …and he wants to be taken seriously?
