A Fair Is A Place They Give Ribbons To Prize Hogs

It has no place in a fight. I would include a political fight in that. The great Thomas Sowell goes further. Read his excellent critique of fairness:

If there is ever a contest to pick which word has done the most damage to people’s thinking, and to actions to carry out that thinking, my nomination would be the word “fair.” It is a word thrown around by far more people than have ever bothered to even try to define it.

This mushy vagueness may be a big handicap in logic but it is a big advantage in politics. All sorts of people, with very different notions about what is or is not fair, can be mobilized behind this nice-sounding word, in utter disregard of the fact that they mean very different things when they use that word.

Some years ago, for example, there was a big outcry that various mental tests used for college admissions or for employment were biased and “unfair” to many individuals or groups. Fortunately there was one voice of sanity– David Riesman, I believe– who said: “The tests are not unfair. LIFE is unfair and the tests measure the results.”

Amen. Readeth the whole thing, for it is good: The Fallacy of “Fairness”

Like most things corrupted by liberal emotionally based ideals, the problem with “fairness” usually comes down to the definition.

When I coached little league football I always enjoyed the discussion with parents who were mad that their 58 pound kid wasn’t put in against an opposing 130 pound lineman. “It isn’t fair” “Johnny practiced really hard”. Johnny is as good as that bigger kid”.

Johnny had the skill set – but life, unfairly, made him smaller than the other kids. You can’t fight physics! Likewise, families that never read in their homes or kids without a father have an inherent disadvantage to those that do.

Additionally, I guess the question as well should be “fair to who?” In nearly all situations, what is fair to individual A is unfair to individual B.

In the sports example given above (# 2) although the parents believe it would only be fair to put little “Johnny” in because he practiced, it would be unfair to “Bobby” who also practiced, and who is equal in size to the person he has to guard on the line, and unfair to the rest of the team who would probably have to lose because the coach didn’t put in the best player.

So, again, what definition of “fair” are we going to use, and then thereafter “fair” to who? In discussing this, the word “Justice” continues to pop in my head as well, as I find the common discussion nowadays regarding “justice” to be equally upside down.

Ok, so I decided to go to dictionary.com and get their definition of “fair”.

    fair
1  /fɛər/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [fair] Show IPA adjective, -er, -est, adverb, -er, -est, noun, verb
    –adjective
    1. free from bias, dishonesty, or injustice: a fair decision; a fair judge.
    2. legitimately sought, pursued, done, given, etc.; proper under the rules: a fair fight.
    3. moderately large; ample: a fair income.
    4. neither excellent nor poor; moderately or tolerably good: fair health.
    5. marked by favoring conditions; likely; promising: in a fair way to succeed.

I am actually shocked as it seem that definition 1 requires further definition, and conflicts with the other definitions.

BEIJING (Reuters) – Senior Chinese military officers have proposed that their country boost defense spending, adjust PLA deployments, and possibly sell some U.S. bonds to punish Washington for its latest round of arms sales to Taiwan.

    WORLD

The calls for broad retaliation over the planned U.S. weapons sales to the disputed island came from officers at China’s National Defence University and Academy of Military Sciences, interviewed by Outlook Weekly, a Chinese-language magazine published by the official Xinhua news agency.

The interviews with Major Generals Zhu Chenghu and Luo Yuan and Senior Colonel Ke Chunqiao appeared in the issue published on Monday.

For those of you who don’t speak Chinese, this is called a threat and shot across the bow.

I happen to listen to Stephanie Miller, and Ron Reagan (on occasion). It is not surprising to me at all that LGF would side with them – the fact that it is against Pam Geller is probably a bonus. The truth is that the political opinions of “Charles” and LGF (as I see them repeated here) are nearly identical these days to those of both Ron Reagan, and Stephanie Miller (and most of those on Air America).

If any proof of a final, final nail in the coffin of confusion over where LGF stands were needed…. (no, I don’t really think there is)

Also, Islam was the first Western religion to explicitly spell out the rights of outsiders of another faith. The Roman Catholic Church went pretty far afield from Jesus’ teachings on how to treat your neighbor. Mohamed and the Koran made the Jews and Christians 2nd class, forbade them certain political rights, and charged extra taxes, but also set in stone that they had property rights, the right to engage in most businesses, to come and go as they pleased. The letter of their law was very progressive at the time.

Same goes for (free) women’s rights. When Mo said women inherit half what their male siblings get when the father dies, we see sexism. People of that time saw a progressive religion granting property rights to women who could otherwise be treated as something below a male child and above a goat.

If we can’t waggle our finger at an ally for white phosphorus bombs or a certain apathy on controlling illegal settlers, then that’s irrational prejudice as much as hatin’ on the Jews, imho. It’s not unreasonable to support Israel while judging everyone’s behavior by the same standard. The center-left voices of the Knesset are not less pro-Israel than Bachmann.

Compared to everything else that was an influence on Hitler, the Mufti of Jerusalem’s influence was tiny. And claiming that Hitler got the idea for the Holocaust from him is total fantasy.

Have any of you been following this on Pam’s site. There is tons of evidence that Hitler and the Mufti were in cahoots to get rid of the Jews. I highly suggest you check it all out and decide if Chuck is full of shit or not.

I didn’t say that they imported antisemitism from the muslim world.
Please don’t judge me that harshly. It is not so simple a concept.

There are historians who say that the Mufti had an influence on “the final solution”. An influence that should not have allowed him to die a natural death in freedom. I linked to a review of a perfectly fine book that makes the case.

However, if this is a completely forbidden discussion, I will respect that.

Let’s not forget that Charles applies ethereal definitions to the terms facism and rascism that only exist in his narrow ivory tower world. Adhering to them is an error in thought and not practical. Adhering to them and agreeing with them is a sign that the cult mentality is still at work in the poster. 2. This evangelical pro-Israel talk is a little dangerous. Pro-semitism, if that’s a word, is as prejudicial as antisemitism.

Although these statements are not coming directly from LGF, I never imagined that LGF would see these types of blatant wedge-type talking points for Anti-Israelism coming out of LGF. If this were another site where the Main-Loozard didn’t micromanage everything, and wasn’t quick to delete everything he didn’t like, I would give it the benefit of the doubt. In some ways because of the complete editorial control “charles” has over his blog, a statements remaining on the site is almost agreement.

    Watch for more Israel bashing!

We knew that was going to happen. with the kind of control that Charles excercizes over the comments now, you can be assured that those are his thoughts, just spoken through a surrogate. Like KKKilgore Trout at Hot Air.

The Mufti was a Bandwagon jumper. He say the Nazis were a means to an end and joined them.

Indeed. Before he was Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, he was a pan-Syrian. Before the British broke Syria and Lebanon off from the British occupied Levant, he was agitating for “Greater Syria”, to include all of the Levant including Iraq. Once the Brits gave North Levant to the French, He agitated for independent “Palestine”. He was always an opportunist, and wanted as much power as he could get his fingers on. He didn’t believe in much of anything.

Notice how few people are coming down hard on the Isreal haters over there? This is a seminal moment in the swamp’s history. Two years ago we would’ve been all over that pos. Where are you lawhawk?
Forget lawhawk, he is a pitiful wimp.
I think so also. The erudite man who thinks he can just glide above the controversy. Well Bullshit, pick a side. And it appears he has.

He likes the fact that he is treated as some sort of intellectual Brahmin over there. Will never get his hands dirty though or say something that Chaz might slightly disagree with. Too bad because in his heart of hearts I suspect he knows that Chaz is a whack job.

It’s funny, because lawhawk links on his blog to all those “forbidden” bloggers ;-)

    @ Rodan:

These statements made by the Loozard are not new, and are typical Anti-Israel talking points.

If he had something unique to say other than a rehashed “the Jews run our government”, we must criticize Israel but not the Arab/Muslims, and the Jews used White Phosphorous (and other false statements, but anti-Israel talking points) I would give a bit more rope.

These comments however are no different than the claims you can read on KOS, DU, ISM tracts, or other blatant Anti-Israel/Anti-Semitic websites. Ironic that Mr. “everyone is a Nazi but me” is allowing statements regarding Israel that you could easily find on Stormfront.

Does anyone happen to know how these comments (if at all) were responded to by the other Loozards?

    The Protocols of the LGF.

This dsent into anti-Israeli sentiment on the part of Husky was
predictible as he sinks deeper into leftist lunacy.
Letting these comments go on LGF is just the beginning.
LGF will shortly be an anti-Israel hate blog imo.

WOW! Is “Charles” on the thread?

Maybe you clip some choice quotes, etc., and we’ll make a Thread out of it. I’m pretty much against LGF Threads, but this issue just might be worth it.
