English Defence League marches today to support Geert Wilders (who very well might be the next PM of the Netherlands!) and free speech. Geert Wilders is facing prosecution in Holland for “inciting hatred” with the controversial film, Fitna, that focuses on the links between Islam and terrorism, he is showing his film and giving a speech at Parliament.
The EDL will meet at 1300GMT (that’s 0900EST here in the USA) and march to the Houses of Parliament. The EDL plans on having live feeds and running commentary throughout the march. There will be counter-protesters on the route such as the leftist group UAF (who appear to be funded by the Unite Union, UK’s largest trade union and the Labour government, read: Progressives), The Socialist Workers Party SWP , and of course, there will be the seething muslims! (1) The use of Crusader symbols probably won’t help the EDL any. Although I understand the significance to Christians, and specifically to England, it makes me uncomfortable; and this comes from someone who for the most part supports what they are trying to do (from what I know at this point).

No, you are thinking of the Knight Templars. There was no Crusader Cross. That’s a Hollywood invention, each Order had their symbols. Each National delegation had their falgs. Keep in Mind many national symbols in Europe have crosses.
I’m sure Groups in Israel use the Star of David. Not because it’s a Jewish symbol, but because it’s a national Israeli symbol.
Many symbols have been secularized over the centuries.

Yes, I was thinking of the Knights Templar cross which has been popularized as the “Crusader Shield” by movies and popular culture.
That being said however, when you “google” “Crusader Shiled” you get this.
Thus you can argue all the truly historical inaccuracies you want, and you might even be right, but the impression and first instinct of others will remain.
Also, it wasn’t the use of the cross that bothered me either, as I understand the connection between the Church(es) and Europe. This is why I suggested the use of the Union Jack (3 crosses) instead.
Either way though, I didn’t mean to sidetrack the conversation to something pretty insignificant. If someone from the EDL is reading this, they should take my initial response into consideration, but the larger issue is what is important.

The St George cross is the English national flag, they’re the English Defence League. I don’t see the problem. One of the reasons the left has managed to gain so much power is because our sense of national identify has been slowly stripped away and subsumed in “civic identity”, promoting the idea hat we’re British, and that native national identity is meaningless in the modern age because we’re a “melting pot” and a “multicultural nation”. Anything that promtes that sense of native national identity has been branded as racist. So you get talk of the “crusader cross” and how it’s racist and, because the mythology of its racism and alleged hostility is so pervasive, your reaction is understandable.
However, tossing out our national flag to please a relative few who see it as racist, or in an attempt to assuage the sort of reaction you’ve had (which, as I said, is understandable based on the knowledge you have) will give credence to the idea that it’s racist. It will harm the cause of the EDL, not help it, because it will allow people to spread the idea that they’re trying to hide their racism by shedding symbols that have been called racist. By giving in to their demands, their slanderous claims are confirmed.
The United Kingdom of Great Britain is a civic state, not a nation. Its symbols are symbols of civil union, not nationality. Before we can fight to preserve that we have to fight to preserve our own national identities. A Union such as ours has to be built on a firm foundation. That foundation must be the confidence of nations that understand their roots and history, and that includes their national mythology and their symbols and flags. Take away that confidence and you destroy the Union. And that’s exactly what’s happened to this country. The reason we’re falling apart is progressive undermining of our cultural heritage and the destruction of confidence in our national identities that follows this.
You have to ask yourself, why did the Jews survive so long? The simple answer is, they knew who they were. If Judah had forgotten who it was, there would be no Jews today. If they had forgotten where they came from, they would no longer have an identity. If “next year in Jerusalem” was never uttered, the Jewish nation would have faded away long before Israel was reborn. A nation only lasts as long as it knows who it is, where it came from and where it is going.

In fairness, we weren’t at war with the Muzz then. They may have been at war with us, but I’d say it would be fair to say that most people thought of it (if they thought of it at all) as the palestinians and Iran, rather than the Muzz all over the planet. I know that is how I was. 9-11 changed that for me, of course.
