You Lie

Filed under Barack Obama, Democratic Party, Politics at March 10th, 2010 - 11:17 am

Over at Reason Magazine, a piece entitled Obama and the L-Word.

Here’s how predictable the president’s slippery relationship with the truth has become: Hours before the State of the Union address, Washington Examiner reporter Timothy P. Carney posted a “pre-emptive fact check” that, among other things, prebutted any presidential claim to have “stopped the revolving door between government and corporate lobbying.” As it happened, that night Barack Obama made an even bolder (read: less truthful) claim: that “we’ve excluded lobbyists from policymaking jobs.”

Matt Welch points out an example of why this was so obviously wrong:

In fact, more than 40 former lobbyists work in the administration, including such policy makers as Deputy Defense Secretary William J. Lynn (who was lobbying for Raytheon as recently as 2008), Office of the First Lady Director of Policy and Projects Jocelyn Frye (National Partnership for Women and Families), White House Director of Intergovernmental Affairs Cecilia Muñoz (National Council of La Raza), and Treasury Secretary Chief of Staff Mark Patterson (Goldman Sachs).

Fiddlesticks. Well, he means well, so what’s a lobbyist for good causes and maybe a few humongous banks and maybe a defense contractor or two?

This reminded me of another recent story, though:

Emails obtained under the Freedom of Information Act show that the Obama Department of Energy is using the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA) — the lobbying arm of “Big Wind” in the U.S. — to coordinate political responses with two strongly ideological activist groups: the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS), and the George Soros funded Center for American Progress (CAP).

But what’s a little white lie for a good cause, right?

The difference between these two most recent Democratic presidents, substantial to begin with (especially in the crucial area of economic policy), may come into sharper relief in 2010. Clinton’s reptilian relationship with the truth, suffused as it always has been with a catch-me-if-you-can sense of personal preservation, actually turned out to have some uses for the nation when he changed course after the 1994 Republican revolution and began co-opting some of the limited-government policies proposed by his opponents. It’s easier for a chameleon to change his spots.

Obama’s dishonesty, by contrast, seems to spring from a different place. As a man who has spent most of his career wowing people with his words and very little of it converting those words into deeds, he has an activist’s gap between rhetoric and reality and a radio broadcaster’s promiscuous carelessness with cutting rhetorical corners. Sure, it’s not technically true that the administration’s day-one lobbying reforms served “to get rid of the influence of…special interests,” as he claimed in a January radio address (to the contrary: federal lobbying in 2009 set an all-time record), but it’s easy to imagine that the president feels his combination of tighter employment restrictions for ex-lobbyists and stricter disclosure requirements for current ones is, in the context of the Manichean fight between “the people” and “special interests,” good enough for government work. The perfect shouldn’t be the enemy of the good, and the critics who complain are just opportunistic literalists grasping for any club to beat back the march of progress. No need to give them an inch.

So no foul, since Obama’s by definition the good guy.

But there’s a less charitable explanation too. During the president’s nonstop gabfests before, during, and after the State of the Union speech, he kept repeating the fiction that the medical industry’s “special interests” were significantly to blame for scotching his health care legislation. In fact, the administration and Congress negotiated with those interests every step of the way, receiving crucial buy-in and millions in campaign contributions. Pro-reform lobbyists outspent anti-reform lobbyists on advertising by a factor of 5 to 1. There’s a three-letter word for blaming the defeat of his bill on health care lobbyists, and it rhymes with pie.

That’s not very nice.

And yet it smacks of something worse still. When a politician cannot fathom opposition to his policies except as the manifestation of wicked manipulation by bad guys, remediable only by more thorough “explanations” from the good guys, it indicates an unseemly paternalism. And if he cannot take the hint that Bush-Obama bailout-and-spend economics are deeply and increasingly unpopular, that indicates something immovable about his core economic ideology. With those two factors as backdrop, it’s hard to say which would be worse: if the president didn’t really believe what he said, or if he did.

Indeed. I’m pining for the good old days of Billy-Jeff Clinton. When he lied, all was right with the world, because you knew deep down that no matter what his lips said, he wouldn’t do anything really, really crazy. When this one tells you he’s going to do something crazy, believe him. Don’t believe a word of his justification, but believe every word of his intent.

The ‘I Am Not George Bush’ Policy: All the borrowing at home and fighting abroad?

    /Victor Davis Hanson

    Excerpts:

George Bush, a purported conservative, ran up deficits reaching in aggregate $2.5 trillion; therefore I, Barack Obama, a liberal, can legitimately exceed that figure by a factor of three or four. That seems to be the thinking of the present administration.
    . . .
Here is the Obama saga on Iraq: 2003: a mistaken war; 2004: “not much of a difference between my position on Iraq and George Bush’s position at this stage”; 2005–07: voted each year to fund the war; 2007: all troops out by March 2008; 2008: the surge is not working; 2009: the status-of-forces agreement signed by Bush is adhered to; 2010: Iraq (according to Vice President Biden) might be the administration’s greatest achievement — though it was, of course, not worth the cost. Factor in Bush’s popularity rating at any one time, the relative ongoing level of violence in Iraq, and the proximity of Obama to an election, and one might predict his often-changing position on the war.
    . . .
Similar surreal examples could be found in matters of healthcare, global warming, partisan politics, and immigration. It seems reductionist to suggest that Obama came into office with little clue how to govern or to galvanize the country, but with one real assumption: He would simply advertise himself as not George Bush, and almost anything he subsequently did would be declared inspired by the enthralled media

Ah, socialism… You guys are in for such a treat! You see, I already lived in it, I know what to expect, and I also know how to immunize myself… Some of you, especially those of the “Well, some of it may not be a bad thing” and “There ought to be a law!!!” persuasion are about to experience it on your own soft tender hide. Enjoy. Don’t say you were never warned. You were. You chose to disregard it.

As we watch the unfolding disaster of the Obama deconstruction of America we can be alarmed, even fearful, and it is a terrible thing to witness by anyone that loves freedom. However time may actually be our ally in that Obama is like a snail that is leaving a trail of corruption, lies, and slime behind him.

At first there is not much of a trail, but now many can catalog the ever growing trail of slime and lies, it becomes very odious. Those that had perception knew what this man was as anyone that sat in a racist black liberation theology NON-CHRISTIAN church that published its hatred, and damning of America did not need any other witness or evidence of who this man was/is.

However many do not have that perception, they needed to experience what this man is, to see his filthy vision unfold, and that is happening and the evidence is gathering. Remember the media had one job it performed before the election and that was to literally hide the Obama slime trail before the election, to hide his career, his involvement with ACORN, his ties to radicals, his beliefs, his hatred of white America…refer to comments about white cops arresting black college professors etc.

Yes time in some sense is helping us, to bad it has to come at such a price, but this pain may be what saves America, and probably the world from a new dark ages.

And may God BLESS America, and may God damn the current MSM, may the whole structure of the MSM be destroyed, by financial ruin, by exposure of corruption, I pray even by acts of God, may these enemies of freedom lose their freedom, position, and income, may they become the lowest of the low in our society, let them be hated and despised beyond any segment of society. Let them be questioned wherever they go, let not one story or report be accepted or believed.

Well, yes, the socialists (far lefty loons) are a minority (20%) in this country. However, they are in control of congress and the WH and are intent on ignoring the obvious will of the people. We have the majority on our side, but not time as we have to wait until November to throw the bums out. It may be too late by that time.

I’m terribly sorry to bring this up, since I have attempted to put Mad King Yertle’s domain behind me as much as possible. But it was just brought to my attention that the Mad King has done two things in his current thread:

    1) Quoted an old post of mine, and
    2) Claimed that I have sent him “harassing and obscene emails for months.”

The second is an out and out, bald-faced lie—which, perhaps, makes it appropriate for me to mention this in a “You Lie!” thread. I have not sent the Mad King an email since long before I took my leave.

The first—his quote of an old post of mine—shows that the Mad King also lies about his “nuke the posts” option; clearly, he has everything that appeared on his site archived, even if he chooses now to hide it from public view.

It’s remarkable that the Mad King could lay his hands quickly on a random post out of the 45,000-odd that he supposedly “nuked.” Perhaps he spends his evenings poring over them; if so, he is reading something far more interesting and well-written than his own scrivenings.

  82. 82 | March 10, 2010 12:56

Remember the Soviet Union appeared to be impregnable, a threat to freedom and democracy, and human survival, yet all during the 70′s and into the 80′s the Soviet Union was being hollowed out, decaying from within. I remember very well the fear of liberals, the kowtowing to Russia, the blubbering cowardice when Reagan was caught uttering the following on a mike that was supposed to be off on August 11, 1984:

My fellow Americans, I’m pleased to tell you today that I’ve signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes.

O, how terrifying…Reagan is a CRAZY man they all intoned, “come on kiss the ass of dictators like us, we are AFRAID!”

Yet on June 12, 1987, just two years, ten months and two days from his joke, about bombing the MIGHTY and TERRIFYING Soviet Union, Reagan uttered these famous and prophetic words at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin:

“General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!’”

And then just two years four months and twenty nine days later that wall FELL on Nov 9, 1989.

This is the guts of prophecy, it is not the foretelling of events, it is men anointed by God that declare and create what will be. Hebrews 11:3

    Rotherham’s Version

By faith, we understand the ages to have been fitted together, by declaration of God,–to the end that, not out of things appearing, should that which is seen, have come into existence.

This is the key to our dilemma now, men must believe they can speak with God’s authority (Reagan believed and he did this) and that will create a new age that otherwise would not have come into existence. Liberals hated Regan, they somehow sensed this man spoke prophetically from time to time. They do not want a world created by the word of God, they want an unjust world created by their hands, a tower of Babel, a Government of man, by man, ruled by man, been there done that ad nauseam.

And now let us look at anti-prophecy by Satanically filled men like Obama, once again in Berlin, but strangely he was not allowed to speak at the Brandenburg gate, in a sense trying to cloak himself with the prophetic mantle of Reagan, liar and thief that he is, instead the venue was at, the base of the Victory Column by the Tiergarten (Central Park of Berlin) where the false prophet Obama was cheered by adoring and deceived Europeans.

“No one nation, no matter how large or how powerful, can defeat such challenges alone.”

Really? Tell that to Regan, tell it to FDR, tell it to Lincoln, tell it to Washington and the founders, you complete tool!

Interestingly here is the comment from Wikipedia about this Victory Column (Berlin Siegessäule)

The Victory Column served as the location for Barack Obama’s speech in Berlin during his visit to Germany on July 24, 2008. The choice of site was somewhat controversial in Germany as it symbolizes German war victories in the past and is still seen as a Nazi symbol.

Angela Merkel had something to do about where Obama would speak, believe me he wanted to speak at the Brandenburg Gate, later he acted like he wanted to speak from a more humble location.

    How Appropriate!

I believe God himself intervened and would not allow this false prophet to cloak himself with the real prophetic anointing that was on Reagan at the Brandenburg gate, but instead, symbolically arranged that Obama would speak from the location of what is accepted by many as a NAZI symbol of war and victory. With the same kind of deceived and adoring crowds that made WWII and the slaughter of Jews and Christians a reality.

Hey Buzz, few could tempt me to travel to the Adipose Wings of Bulbous Biker site, but out of my respect for your talents and always interested in your opinions, I went looking. And I have a question considering it has been about two or three years now since I was a member of that which will remain unnamed.

What purpose is that site supposed to serve, besides defending and promoting Charles’ fragile ego? I ask, because when I left, Charles was but a bit player who started the dialogue. Now it has become almost a diary about Charles’ life, from what he eats to his daily delusions, fraught with rambling commentary about Charles, for Charles, from Charles. zzzzzzzzzz….

I was met with the typical Darwin is my religion rant, complete with “proof” from another nebulous article (Charles is so behind the current information about genetic evolution, I almost sent an email telling him to read a recent genomic technical article, but I knew he didn’t have the foundation and it would be construed as hateful email and propaganda), the charges of the right as 9/11 truthers, Paulians, home schooling wackos, Creationist fundies, some nebulous glee I guess over right-wing infighting, and a huge dose of paranoia, complete with BBC interview which I didn’t bother to watch. And at first I thought, okay so now we’ve switched sides. Got it.

But the more I read, short of the personal advertising of Charles as arbiter of all that is beauty and truth, the only common theme seems to be Charles attempting to debunk everything, a devil’s advocate advocating “nothing” complete with barking seals, parrots, and croaking toads in the comments section.

Unless you’ve made some quantum leap to the dark side, I can attest you were most gentlemanly of all the regulars; an example that on at least two occasions, Charles noted for the rest of us when we got out of hand. Maybe you should ask Chuck to retrieve those comments too.

and the second regarding the Mad King’s retention of material he claimed to have destroyed.

Charles is too paranoid to destroy anything permanently. He’s moved all the comments to another server where he can retrieve the comments when necessary. Or, he’s marked them for deletion so they don’t appear, but they still physically reside someplace. The main reason being his primary server is such a dog, he needs the space. Trying to access a thread with more than a couple of hundred comments at his lair was always a trial of patience.

    Yes.
But I wonder if today it would be as easy. In those days, if the president gave a speech or press conference, all of the networks covered it. It was the custom for all of them to do so, and since they had no competition from cable, they didn’t have to worry about ratings.
Today they pick and choose what they broadcast and don’t feel obliged to show a speech at all. So they will give Obama plenty of access, but they restricted Bush.

  124. 124 | March 10, 2010 13:37

    @ coldwarrior:

I can just about agree on Wiki, however other sources cite the association of the Victory Column with the Nazis, not to make a big deal of this but my point is Obama wanted to speak at the Brandenburg Gate, to synthetically duplicate the incredible and prophetic speech of Reagan. According to most reports he was denied that venue by Merkel, there was no mention in the articles I perused that lead me to believe the problem was accommodation of the crowd.

I just thought it interesting that Obama, seeking to cloak himself in the genuine authority of Reagan was reduced to a possible association with Fascists, which he has proven to have more in common with than with the prophetic vision and determination of Reagan to stop the “Evil Empire,” in its tracks.

I see this theme repeated throughout history, righteous men create or establish some truth, and not long after evil men twist and distort that truth for their own ends. Think Adam Smith (The Wealth of Nations) then about a hundred years later along comes Karl Marx and the Communist Manifesto. Or think of Newton, practically the founder of modern science (Newton was a devout Christian) and once again about a hundred years later the apostate Christian Darwin distorts and perverts science, and yet they made sure they buried Darwin next to Newton, as if to say, “See here lies a scientist of the stature of Newton”…not hardly!

You see, Democratic leaders currently lack the votes needed to pass the Senate health care bill through the House. Under Slaughter’s scheme, Democratic leaders will overcome this problem by simply “deeming” the Senate bill passed in the House – without an actual vote by members of the House.

DETROIT (AP) – A federal judge has denied ex-Detroit councilwoman Monica Conyers’ request to withdraw her guilty plea in a corruption case and sentenced her to three years and one month in prison.
As guards cleared the courtroom Wednesday, Conyers yelled that she planned to appeal.

Conyers suggested that she was the victim of “badgering” last summer when she acknowledged a conspiracy to take bribes for her support of a Houston company seeking a sludge contract. U.S. District Judge Avern Cohn says her plea deal was voluntary.

Conyers is the wife of Democratic U.S. Rep. John Conyers. She quit the council in June.

Prosecutors also want the judge to consider allegations that Conyers and an aide collected $69,500 from people seeking help from the city. Her lawyer denies the claims.

They think we’ll just sit on our hands and take it if they do it. I don’t think they are correct. They are thinking along very dangerous lines if they are even remotely considering something like this. I hope for all our sakes that MM is wrong, and this is just a spurious rumor.

Staffers: Axelrod “Really Shit the Bed This Time”

A messy afternoon housekeeping incident at the White House has some staffers wondering whether Senior Presidential Adviser David Axelrod had lost his mind.

“Axlerod really shit the bed this time,” said one anonymous senior Oval Office aide. “I mean, literally shit the bed, right on the President’s 400-thread count Egyptian cotton sheets. What kind of fucking retard does something like that to the President of the United States? Frankly I can’t see him lasting the hour.”

The aide said Axelrod remained the chief suspect in the case pending the outcome of an internal investigation. “Other than the Obamas, only two people have unsupervised access to that area of the White House – Axelrod and Rahm Emanuel. And as investigators will soon discover, Rahm has an airtight alibi — his peanut allergy.”

“Buh-bye Dave,” added the aide. “That’s what you get for trying to fuck with the Rahmbo.”

Axelrod denied involvement in the incident, which has been referred to the Secret Service for DNA testing.

“All I can tell you is that I had nothing to do with it,” said the embattle adviser, visibly shaking. “But I have a pretty goddamn good idea who did.”

STEPHANOPOULOS:A gentleman named William Ayers. He was part of the Weather Underground in the 1970s. They bombed the Pentagon, the Capitol, and other buildings. He’s never apologized for that.
And, in fact, on 9/11, he was quoted in the New York Times saying, “I don’t regret setting bombs. I feel we didn’t do enough.” An early organizing meeting for your State Senate campaign was held at his house and your campaign has said you are “friendly.”
Can you explain that relationship for the voters and explain to Democrats why it won’t be a problem?

OBAMA: George, but this is an example of what I’m talking about. This is a guy who lives in my neighborhood, who’s a professor of English in Chicago who I know and who I have not received some official endorsement from. He’s not somebody who I exchange ideas from on a regular basis.
And the notion that somehow as a consequence of me knowing somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8 years old, somehow reflects on me and my values doesn’t make much sense, George.

This lie should have derailed “0″(pronounced zero)s Presidential run.

I disconnected the cable years ago. You can get most TV series on Nexflix, as well a movies. Don’t miss real time. Nope, no use for it. If it’s an important news event, it can be streamed on the computer.
