On Friday 19 March 2010, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi invoked a prayer to St. Joseph for help in passing the Health Care debacle. Not being Catholic, I couldn’t remember who he was the patron saint of besides children’s aspirin, so I decided to check Wikipuddlia.
Here’s the entry for St. Joseph:
Further down, under Sainthood, we find this:
Here’s the pertinent paragraph enlarged.
Now click on that image. It’s on Wikipedia, so it’s got to be true… heh. My initial reaction was that some wag edited the Wiki for fun, BUT WAIT! IT’S TRUE!
From The Washington Times:
Seeking to shore up support for her embattled health bill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi today announced it was the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker, adding “We pray to Saint Joseph to benefit the workers of America which is what our health bill would do.”
Problem is, March 19 is indeed the feast day of Saint Joseph, foster-father of Jesus. But the actual feast of St. Joseph the Worker (same man, two ways of commemorating him) comes in six weeks. Set for May 1, it was introduced by Pope Pius XII in 1955 to counteract May Day, the high holiday for communist and socialist workers.
So, Wikipedia is right, Nancy blew it twice in one fell swoop, and Joe Biden’s disease is contagious.

Update 3:42PM: This doesn’t look good.

its shit like this that convinced me to leave the catholic church years ago and join the orthodox.

Reminds me of “patriot” Lucky Luciano.
His help was sought in providing Mafia assistance to counter possible Axis infiltration on U.S. waterfronts, during Operation Avalanche, and his connections in Italy and Sicily were tapped to furnish intelligence and ensure an easy passage for U.S. forces involved in the Italian Campaign. Albert Anastasia, who controlled the docks, promised that no dockworker strikes would arise. Both during and after the war, the U.S. military and intelligence agencies reputedly also used Luciano’s Mafia connections to root out communist influence in labor groups and local governments. In return for his cooperation, Luciano was permitted to run his crime empire unhindered from his jail cell.

The beauty of a spiral galaxy majestically spinning in space? Yes there is evil, but it is our job as His sons to stand strong against evil. He has allowed for a time a world where evil seems to prevail, it is not so in the rest of the universe only here, because God is giving birth to sons with his nature through this fire.
This is truly the answer to the Holocaust of the Jews, the death of any of the righteous, though a temporary agony, once released from this body our spirits are perfected by the act, or many acts of seeing evil and resisting evil. Everything physical in this world has an origin – trees from seeds, seeds from earlier trees, earlier trees from earlier seeds, etc.
Everything goes all the way back to the Big Bang. Time and space are part of the physical universe that started with the Big Bang. So what came before the Big Bang? Even if you believe that other universes and other Big Bangs came before the Big Bang that we know about — what came before those universes?
It’s easy to think, “Oh, the physical world is just here.”
However, we know from physics that there is a conservation of energy and matter such that they don’t just show up out of nowhere.
The only possible way that a physical universe could be created is that it was done by Someone who isn’t a physical part of the physical world Himself. He’s not limited by time or space or anything in the physical world. He’s not limited by anything physical or time-related at all.
So the history of the universe looks like some kind of spread sheet to Him (where He sees it all at once).
No wonder we don’t know what G-d looks like.
We’re in the physical world where there are physical things.
A Being not limited by the physical world can’t be seen by physical means (such as human eyes).

That’s part of the problem Eliana. I think children think about things that you forget about later on… or at least the hugeness it feels like when you’re young. I would think the most common question that children have is, well, who made God? Where did “he” come from, what existed before him?
WIth or without God, its a confusing thing to wonder. No one has that answer.

The answer is: No one made G-d.

I am a Christian and owe everything to the Jews. And to be a Jew will be an eternal honor because to them “were entrusted the oracles of God.” The suffering of the Jews reflects the suffering of God over sin, hatred and the evil of the fallen human nature. I too did not have much love, I had no kids, but married well into my fifties a woman from the Ukraine that has also suffered much. She has two fine sons that are now my sons.
For the most part people that have led solitary lives, or never fit in, it is because the hand of God is upon them…they will never fit into this present scheme. Look at the people that have all these human fulfillment’s, think of Hollywood, yet they are empty, empty people, they cannot find enough drugs, or sex, or self-congratulation to fill the void. Nobody, but nobody finds God without suffering, not fake suffering, but real, sometimes a lifetime of suffering.
The fact that you are even troubled about your thinking of God is evidence that He is there, it is His presence that troubles you, but God is not a spiritual thug, you must invite Him to you, His is the still small voice. Imagine all the power to create universes, yet He is also the most gentle of beings in relating to others. In some way God is almost shy and that makes Him hard to find sometimes.
@ MrPaulRevere:
What I’ve read is that the universe itself wouldn’t exist if the Big Bang (“Let there be light”) wasn’t exactly as powerful as it needed to be.

@ Eliana:
okay… i’ll let you know later then. off to bed. thanks all!
@ teacake:
I tend to make my points very bluntly, I don’t believe in using 30 words to express a point one can make in 15, but that’s just me. I enjoy people who can paint pictures with words.
@ Rodan:
Actually I think he may have to get his ass in here!

The power of God revealed: At what is called the big bang, all matter and energy existed in a space about the size of an atom. It then began to expand faster than the speed of light. At some point in this initial beginning the universe had cooled enough for atoms to form from this pure violent energy, yet for every billion and one atoms formed, there was one billion atoms of anti-matter, these two kinds of matter collided and annihilated each other, the left over residue, one billionth of what we started with now forms all the galaxies and stars and planets, and us.
This paints a picture taken from Genesis where God says, “Let there be light,” and yet the power of God is so great that God had to take back almost all of that energy to produce a universe that would produce stars, and planets and us. Never underestimate God, or his power…it is total and incomprehensible to our finite minds.
@ Possum:
yep… something in this thread is really making IE8 work hard.

really?
Well, this was a good conversation, better than anything I participated in at the swamp.

And here’s where we are in that huge Universe God created!

I read this recently in the Jerusalem Post:
The truth about suffering

The Seder, meaning ‘order’, is the name given to the Passover feast. Some congregations will have a community Seder, you just have to buy a ticket. See what their dress code is, it varies.
@ Possum:
You still use IE?
