At HotAir, in the Headlines, there’s a link to Thomas Barnett: “The real reason for the flotilla: Turkey needs a pretext to build nukes”.

Correct or not, there’s merit to such speculation. Iran and Turkey have been very serious competitors for 800 years or so.

Experimental technology is often botched, and repairs are just as big a gamble.

The question is, have they done anything irreversible. If it’s not on right, they can take it off and put it on again.

With 20-20 hindsight, they should have manufactured the BOP with a lip to attach something like this with. They’re definitely in duct tape mode, and what’s going to happen is what’s going to happen.

They chopped the mating surface off at an angle.

Now, it will never seal unless they remove the flange bolts and attach straight to the flange surface.

Good luck doing something like that 5,000 feet under water!

Difficult, to say the very least.

    Please!

Don’t get me started on the Community Organizer in Chief talking about how he is going to push experts out of the way and the US Government is going to step in and solve this problem.

IF THE US GOV. WANTED TO SOLVE THIS PROBLEM, THEY WOULDN’T HAVE ALLOWED ENVIRONMENTAL GROUPS TO PUSH THE PETROLEUM INDUSTRY SO FAR OUT INTO THE OCEAN TO GET THE OIL OUR COUNTRY SO DESPERATELY NEEDS!!!

They already have it inside the hat, where it was supposed to mate up with the cut-off riser pipe. Problem is, the riser had a tool-cutter shaft in it and the saw that they were using became stuck. They had to ‘chop it off’ with a ‘gardening like pruners’. Hacked it off, bad. Jagged and not flat. Not flat at all.

    :(

    This creates a poor seal.

It appears that they are now firing up the pumps. Let’s see what happens……

    Right!

They were machined to tolerances that made it unecessary, right? Same thing for me when I did work in the oil fields: Class 1, Division 1 wiring: the unions and flanges didn’t need gaskets or O-rings….

I assume that that’s what the ball valves are all about. Once they start sucking, then they can close them. If they try to shut them now, the thing will launch. That’s what the camera is (mostly) trained on.

Hey, Snork: wouldn’t you start up the pumps, create a suction and then close the ball valves??!?

If this were being done correctly, they should have already started the pumps at the surface and the oil flow (if this jury-rigged thing works…”Hurry-rigged” seems more apropos, but I digress) should have stopped or dropped of dramatically….

    ???
