Exactly. They just go along with whatever. I could not imagine a situation where America, Canada, and Mexico decided to join a currency union without a public vote on the matter. The problem is that they have been in the grip of a one-idea state since WW2. They have been given one version of every world event and depend on their governments to settle all problems. The thing that amazed me the most at first was how long childhood is extended here. Adulthood doesn’t really begin here until people are in their thirties. They have gotten accustomed to a life without responsibility. I know I sound like a broken record, but there are essentially two types of laws governing life here; there are things you must never do under any circumstances under penalty of law, and things you must always do also under penalty of law. Almost every action is governed by one of these two so people cease to think and become automatons.

My wife and I visited her High School exchande student friend in Finland a year after our wedding. She asked what I had been doing in the year since she attended our July 2001 wedding. I told her I had started a construction company and was finishing my first contract and was booked for two years. She asked me how could I do that so fast and what process was involved. I descibed, licencing, bonding, insurance and selling….1 2 3 4 Bam your there. She was flabbergasted and a bit peeved that I could just go out and do that so simply.
In all I think she just figured it was all an illigitimate activity since it probably wasn’t regulated to her degree of satisfaction.

Europe is great for a visit or for a study abroad experience; the sad fact of the matter is that Americans largely don’t know anything about the impact of socialist policies on the lives of ordinary Europeans. A wonderful book that is somewhat outdated is Olaf Gersemann’s “Cowboy Capitalism.” It can sometimes be a bit dry, but it contrasts the wealth of ordinary Americans with their counterparts in France, Germany, and Italy. One little titbit was eye-opening. Soon, the difference in wealth between the average American and the average German will be as big as the difference between West Germany and East Germany when the wall came down. *Ouch!*
