AGW & the Peer Reviewed Papers

Found an interesting website today run by Luboš Motl, a physicist in the Czech Republic. He frequently comments about scientific frauds and crackpots, and AGW is not excepted from evisceration with facts.

He reviews (and links to)  a PowerPoint presentation by acting IPCC chairman Rajendra Pachauri on 14 May 2010. Here’s an excerpt:

…Pachauri “cautioned” the meta-IPCC panel not to “undermine the scientists’ motivation”. In other words, the railway engineer blackmailed the would-be independent panel and asked them not to dare to insult the AGW bigots’ religious sensibilities and funding.

The slides are mostly about the “impressive” U.N. institutions and their complicated relationships. But let me choose slide 6 of 12 from Pachauri’s talk. It shows the number of papers about climate change:

That’s a pretty scary growth, especially if we appreciate the fact that the research hasn’t found anything substantial about the climate in the last 15 years.

Clearly, the increase of the work – and corresponding salaries – entirely depends (or depended) on the recent AGW hysteria. The period 2006-2010 is omitted: it would probably be even worse, even if you assume that 2010 is the first year when this tumor will begin to be operated away from the scientific community.

…Now, try to imagine that 90% of your income rests on an assumption or a belief. Wouldn’t you be tempted to defend the assumption or the belief? You surely wouldn’t but I guess you can imagine many other people who would.

He continues with the facts about worldwide glacier growth and reduction:

By the way, among the 12 slides, Pachauri dedicates exactly one slide, 11 or 12, to science, namely retreating glaciers. There is one graph over there. The glaciers are divided to 7 groups: Europe has been slightly growing since 1960, the Andes are completely constant, and the other five (Patagonia; NW USA and Canada; Asian high mountains; Arctic; and especially Alaska plus coast mountains) receded by melting between 2 and 6.5 millimeter of sea-level equivalent. In 50 years.

In total, that’s roughly 25 millimeters of sea-level equivalent in 50 years, less than half a millimeter per year or 5 cm in a century. No doubt, Pachauri tried to claim that this half a millimeter per year of induced sea level rise proves an ongoing catastrophe.

Recent related stuff here. I wonder if someone whose arguments frequently degenerate to childish name calling from behind a certain registration door cares to comment? Naw.

Sorry to jack the thread this soon but I wanted to show you just what kind of person voted for Obama. This is an exchange I had with someone on Facebook.

It is the fault of the eco greenies that we have to drill so far out into the ocean. Driling in shallower water is better but the ecos don’t want that. But it is OK for China to do it in our water. Your argument is too old. Time to quit blaming the previous administration and put the blame on the current regime.

Ummm Obama is leaving troops in Afghanistan….with new rules of engagement. George isn’t in A-stan but would like to to go. He knows what he wants to do. He wants to serve and protect his country. That is more than most people do. Chickenshits. If my brother were to die in this war, I would have to blame Obama…he is the president now, not Bush. Another lame argument

    @ NoThreat2U:
That’s a pattern I’ve been noticing a lot lately. In my psych courses we learned that the way that writing is done and the lack of coherent argument is a sign of a mental disorder. The problem is, I’ve seen that almost all liberals online argue like that. Could it be that an entire segment of society has become dangerously mentally ill?

    @ Mars:

I think it’s more that people have been educated in the dysfunctional. The mentally ill, or more precisely, illogical has been accepted in academic debate. Feelings of groups, have taken the place of facts as accepted truths.

  5. 5 | June 11, 2010 17:14

    @ Bumr50:
Unfortunately dysfunctional thought processes feed on themselves and perpetuate the behaviors.

My psych 101 teacher told our class, “if you take anything from this class I hope its this. Always question the source for validity.”

She was pushed out by the university administation shortly after and we were her last class.

I went to school with this moron. One whole chunk of his family actually looked….special. The features were there. But they weren’t. I don’t know. *sigh* The rest of their cousins and such seemed normal. I hate to sound like I am dissing retarded people, but there was definitely something wrong with this one group.

The interior Alaskan glaciers are growing. And the current extent of the coastal glaciers goes only as far back as the little ice age. I.e. 300 years more or less.

Everyone probably knows about the Jones Act but this is the first I’m hearing of it, on Fox News. I am stunned. This is sad and evil, yes evil. The govt is allowing further destruction of the enviroment instead of offending the unions by suspending the Jones Act and using not US owned and operated boats for skimming? Unbelievable.
