And the click is still there….

    Before this thread dies.

In Britain where we have milk delivered to the doorstep every day the milk carts have been electric forever. I am surprised that mail delivery etc in this country is not by electric. It is perfect. Limited daily milage. lots of stop starts. Predictable time available every day/night for charging.

Garbage collection also springs to mind. Busses not so much as they are running long hours per day.

You don’t need to charge the Volt. It has a gasoline engine that runs a generator that simultaneously powers the electric drive motors and recharges the battery. All our conservative radio talk hosts who are yelling about “you can only drive 40 miles” are looking like idiots because they don’t understand how the car works. It’s like the diesel/electric drive truck that Oshkosh is already building for the army.

Bash the gov’t subsidy all you want but at least make an attempt to understand how the damn thing works before you criticize the technology involved.

Glad to oblige Speranza. The goings on in both the US and Australia tend to mirror each other even if they slightly out of phase, so it’s sometimes informative to use what’s happening in one nation as a way to forecast what will happen in the other in the near future. Being a wee bit out of phase politically allows one to do some crystal ball forecasting based on trends in each other’s country.

    :)

We have a bunch of hybrid buses up here. Funny thing is that every time I see them, which is a lot since I work near a big bus station for the TTC, they seem to be spewing clouds of black smoke from the diesel engine.

There may be 22 million by now but 21 -22 million is about how many Aussies there are. There are also 4 million Kiwis in a land area about the size of Japan, the UK or Italy. We really REALLY like it that way. Not crowded with LOTS of space to play and live and a HUGE moat around us, called the Pacific Ocean and the Tasman Sea.

Shhhh don’t spread it about . We like NZ just as it is! I love it when Northern Hemisphere maps in the media talk show leave off New Zealand the edge or cover it over with the station logo!.

    This is GOOD! :)

That’s correct. There is a violent Vietnamese gang problem also manifest in Cabramatta in Sydney’s Western suburbs, not far from Lekemba where the muslims congregate. They tend to have the odd pitched battle. The Aussies standing on the sidelines yell…… “come on anybody….. hit ‘em again…..”

There are also Samoans who had their church burned down in Lekemba by some muslim thugs. There is no love lost between Samoans and muslims.

If somebody wants to purchase a hybrid car, there’s a market for it. If somebody wants to purchase an electric vehicle, there’s a market for it.
I’m not criticizing the technology at all. I’m criticizing government mandates that interfere with the free market. What’s hidden from the general public is where that electrical energy to power the cars comes from, and it’s not cheap energy.

When electrical power for vehicles becomes cheaper than gasoline, then the market will move in that direction.

Australia under Abbott will indeed put a premium on migrants who have technical skills but also FIT IN with the underlying culture. The numbers will half in an Abbott government but hopefully the quality of migrants will rise. Oz is REALLY short of heavy equipment drivers, IT technicians, merchant seamen, skilled metal workers, doctors, nurses, cops, scientific researchers, soldiers, miners, and a host of other skill groups.

We have more than enough bloody lawyers and accountants! :)

Do you want some? We’d gladly swap 10 lawyers for one half decent heavy equipment driver. Deal? :)
