It’s not “Obama’s car”. It was in development during the Bush years well before he came into office and nationalized GM. This is a stupid talking point the radio hosts are on about it and I wish our side would just drop it. It’s making us look like idiots.
It’s a gasoline/electric generator and battery powered car, it’s not going to quit after 40 miles. If you only drive short commutes in town, it will run off the battery, and you can recharge the battery at night. On trips longer than 40 miles, the gasoline engine kicks in to run a generator to power the electric motors and recharge the battery WHILE YOU ARE DRIVING. It’s an interesting technology, and I might consider one once the price comes down. The army is using a similar system now on trucks built by Oshkosh.
The only thing I object to about the vehicle is the govt subsidy. If people are going to criticize it, criticize that, don’t sound like a bleeding idiot with this “you can only go 40 miles!” crap I’m hearing on the radio.
@ The Osprey:
I just criticize it’s cost compared to the Nissan Leaf.
Rodan wrote:
Enjoyed being able to contribute Rodan. See you on air in a fortnight. Next weekend I’ll be in Queenstown in the NZ Southern Alps at a wedding….. and a little skiing … not necessarily in that order.
Does anyone know much about the new Mitsubishi all electric car due out next year? I heard that it had a range of about 100+ miles and a 6 hour full charge and a 15 minute quick top up 80% charge. I hope that that is correct as it’d make urban commuting cheap
@ Aussie Infidel:
That sounds like fun!
doriangrey wrote:

Aussie Infidel wrote:
See that car can be a game changer.
@ The Osprey:
My ideal hybrid would be a car which was primarily electric but had a small engine and gas tank that you could hook up to the back (or even dock onto).
You just hooked up the gas engine when your trip was a long one. For daily commutes battery and overnigght charge.
That way you are not dragging a gas engine around all the time. It could even be an option.
@ The Osprey:
From downstairs:
If somebody wants to purchase a hybrid car, there’s a market for it. If somebody wants to purchase an electric vehicle, there’s a market for it.
I’m not criticizing the technology at all. I’m criticizing government mandates that interfere with the free market. What’s hidden from the general public is where that electrical energy to power the cars comes from, and it’s not cheap energy.
When electrical power for vehicles becomes cheaper than gasoline, then the market will move in that direction.
Wow 4 different countries represented here now.
@ mjazz:
I see three, which one is the fourth?

Rodan wrote:
The leaf is more limited since it is a true plug in electric. You don’t ever have to plug in the Volt if you don’t want to.
If people accept this type of battery/gasoline-electric generator drive configuration the price will come
down. Oshkosh is using it very successfully for big trucks. They’ve achieved a 40% reduction in diesel fuel consumption with their Pulse Drive system, which is very similar to the Volt.

Railway locomotives are hybrid, without a battery though. The diesel engine works at its optimum efficiency to drive a generator that powers electric motors.

I thought Possum said he was in England.
The Osprey wrote:
It has nothing to do with that. Don’t you think that the francisees selling electric vehicles would have pushed it on their own? Of course they would have, but they didn’t. The only reason the Saturn EV-1 fiasco took hold was not because of demand, but by pressure from the factory. The factory steers the dealers/francisees, and if the dealers don’t cow down, they don’t receive inventory. Serious pressure.
Where do the factories get the pressure? From the feds who have the power to manipulate the market via tax incentives and penalties. This is not a conspiracy theory, it’s fact.
Possum wrote:
Exactly. That what inspired both the Oshkosh ProPulse drive for trucks and the Volt. Ultracapacitors in the case of Oshkosh’s ProPulse drive and batteries in the case of the Volt just add to fuel efficiency. Since the gasoline or diesel engine does not drive the wheels it does not have to rev up or down and thus as you say it can run at a constant RPM tuned for maximum fuel efficiency. And since you have an electric motor at each wheel you can eliminate drive train components as well.

You are talking apples and oranges Bunk. Since the Volt is not dependent solely on battery, it does not need to plug in to recharge, and it is a full sized sedan not a limited little golf cart mobile like the EV1. I think there will be demand for the Volt, the cost will come down as economies of scale kick in just like they did for the Prius type hybrids, and if we can get Oblahblah out of office the subsidy will likely go away as well.

The bottom line is that the Chevy Volt is a bastardized hybrid that is being spun by the lame stream media as “The New Electric Wonder Car of the Future” and most of the dumb ass public is falling for it hook, line, and sinker.
This Volt thing reminds me of the time I test drove a Smart car. I wanted to like it, I really did. Still do, actually. I’m single/childless and that little toy would be perfect for me. But…
It’s loud. It hobby-horses and wanders on the highway. And it’s big-van tippy (!). Seriously, all the metal MB put into the safety cage, combined with its small dimensions, make it a real adventure trying to hustle through a corner.
So, FWIW, here’s my take: most folks will view the electrics with suspicion until one shows it has The Right Stuff. And that lucky, insightful winner will be the next Pious and may even change the world.

No, the bottom line is that our benighted conservative talkers are looking like idiots screeching that “Obama’s spending money on a car that will only go 40 miles and you have to plug it in” when they clearly don’t understand the technology of how the car works.
Look, I object to the government subsidy as much as you. I also think Chevy has done a poor job of explaining how the car actually works, otherwise you wouldn’t be hearing this garbage about it dying on the road after 40 miles. But the fact of the matter is the car was in development way before Obama came in to office and FedGov took over GM. It does not leave you stranded on the road after 40 miles.
And if our side is going to do or say something that makes them look like idiots, I’m going to call them out on it. Otherwise we end up being just like the morons over at the swamp.

Years ago, California, in one the stupidest moves ever done, decided that the entice people to buy hybrids, decided that they would issue (for a nominal cost) stickers that would allow the buyers of the hybrids to drive in the carpool lanes. At the time, a new hybrid cost over $35,000. So that left out the average joe. The well off could buy the car, get a tax break and clog up the HOV lanes. However, only 75,000 stickers would be issued, and later on, a lot of buyers would saddle themselves with a hybrid, only to find out that they couldn’t get the magic sticker.
However, it does beg the question….wouldn’t it be smarter to have the supposed non-polluting car in the lanes stuck in rush-hour traffic?
And if people really want something, as was pointed out during the show tonight, you don’t have to give them tax breaks and subsidies to buy it. The Ford Mustang 50-year anniversary edition sold out without a single dealer incentive.
@ The Osprey:
I am in complete agreement with you on your main point. This is only the latest issues that the right is using to make themselves look like a bunch of complete idiots. This is why the right had earned its name “The Stupid Party.”

0:48-0:50 listen to the descent in the Soprano line on “Sybilla” — Bb to A to G# — classic “Neapolitan” interval (this one associated with the submediant A, since the movement is in G [minor]), full of torment. Again, in the soprano, at 1:05-108, “discus surus” is Eb to D to C# (associated with the dominant, D).
At “Quantus tremor est futurus” in the bass (1:08-1:12, 1:15-1:19, 1:22-1:25) the first instance is reversed — G# to A to Bb (back to A again).

In other news, terror group hizb ut Tharir held a meeting in Moreland councils town hall (20 minutes or so from here). Unbelievable.
Apparently, Aussie Infidel was on the BTR today. I’m disappointed I missed it. I’ll have to catch up when the little ones are in bed.
@ Lily:
Hahaha, how did you know this was my theme song when I was younger?
Here is another song, a bit more mellow but I reallllly like it.
Off to get dinner ready.
Think positive, linoleumknife. It’s the man that counts not the looks!
{Lily}-take care of that shoulder.
@ Lost:
Thanks Lost. Have a great day.
@ Lost:

I guess not…
Off to bed then.
Night all.
Soooo quiet. LOL, well I guess I could turn it up a little.
Hey…turn it down!
@ Lost:
LOL, ok I’ll try and keep it down.
Morning everybody
@ linoleumknife:
Isn’t it nearly morning?
Morning Rightside!
Morning everyone. Time for the silliness.
@ Lost:
Morning Lost
@ Rightside:
Mornin’ Rightside. Long time no see, I hope you have been doing well.
@ Lost:
Yeah, it’s 5:10 a.m. here in Texas. I have about two hours left at the office.
@ linoleumknife:
pretty good thanks, hope you have been too. I am around, I just don’t post much any longer.
@ PaladinPhil:
LOL, I like the demon child. That one is hilarious.
@ linoleumknife:
Wow, I didn’t realize you work nights.
@ Rightside:
I know the feeling. I read most of the threads but I just don’t have a lot of time to post. Plus most of the time when I get on it’s late at night and nobody is here.
@ linoleumknife:
Yeah the demon child was funny. I didn’t realize the red eye was bad until I looked at it yesterday.
@ PaladinPhil:
cool pics.
When I take photos of bright lights at night all I get is blur.
@ Lost:
Oh yeah, I’m the young buck at the office so I have to pull graveyard. It’s not to bad though. It’s calm and I don’t have to fight traffic normally. Plus I don’t have to deal with office drama. It’s a pretty sweet gig all in all.
@ Lost:
It’s a skill and a bit of luck. It also takes either a real steady hand or the use of a tripod.
@ PaladinPhil:
Well I think it came out just right.
@ linoleumknife:
I was aiming for a few effects and I was using fast glass, a good shutter speed, so the steady hand and tripod weren’t really necessary. There’s other ways to avoid blurs as well. Night photography is an arcane lore at times.
@ linoleumknife:
Oh, I know all about the punishment of being young. I have an admin meeting tomorrow and it’s been such a rough week. I feel like getting up and saying, “just because you are all old enough to be my grandparents…”
I’ll have to control myself!
@ PaladinPhil:
My camera’s got a lousy shutter speed. Maybe that’s the problem.
@ Lost:
Partly. You also have to know how to get the most out of it. What type of camera do you have? I may be able to give you some pointers for night shots.
@ Lost:
LOL, that might not go over well. It can be tough.
@ PaladinPhil:
nikon but not sure of the model number.
I’m heading out. ttyl.
@ Lost:
Cheers, and have a good day. If you remember the rest of the info I can help.
Ok guys, I’m gonna get going. Y’all have a good day.

If you don’t have a tripod, look around for something to brace the camera against – light poles, railings, etc. Works for low-light interior shots as well, such as churches (use the pew backs.)
Okay, time for me to pack up and head out. Work beckons. See you all in about an hour or so.
Rockets explode in Eilat, Aqaba; casualties in Jordan
Video) Rocket apparently fired by terrorists in Sinai explodes in open area in Israel’s southernmost city; three more land in Red Sea; another rocket hits Aqaba, killing one person and injuring five. Peres: Attack part of struggle between moderates, extremists
However, Egyptian security officials said the attack did not originate in the Sinai Peninsula.
“Firing rockets from Egypt requires extensive logistical preparations and a lot of equipment. This is impossible because Sinai is heavily secured,” one official said.
And if you believe that, I got a bridge in Brooklyn for sale
The journey to work was made, and I am now ensconced in my work chair for the typical eight hours.

I’ve been in my Office since 7:00 AM, but I do get up walk around and go sit down in one of my treatment rooms now and then.
@ Nevergiveup:
Yes, but are these moderate rockets or extremist rockets. They don’t always come with labels…
@ Nevergiveup:
I usually don’t move much from my desk, part of my job. Today though I will be doing patrols since the building is locked down for a holiday.
