Caturday: Remembering Minnesota’s only legal ‘cat house’

Guests at Minnesota’s oldest hotel could request a cuddly cat for the night

My husband and I stayed at the famous Anderson House Hotel in Wabasha, Minnesota a few years ago. The female tabby we chose spent most of the night cuddling with my husband. But I didn’t mind. The room was picturesque and the food at the restaurant was good.

Petside.com blog post from November 29, 2007:
Wanted: Friendly, Warm, Affectionate Ambassador for Minnesota Cat House

Arnold…How may I help you?

Okay…I know it’s a family website. But it’s not what you think. So shame on you!

Actually, The Historic Anderson House in Wabasha, Minnesota is, according to innkeeper Teresa Smith, the state’s only legal “cat house.” And for a very good reason. The staff of the 151 year-old bed-and-breakfast includes five friendly felines who, upon request, will come to your room evenings, warm your bed, and keep you company. What’s more, the hotel provides a litter box, toys, and food with each “kitty-to-go.” Most guests reserve a cat with their room, Smith says, and many put their dibs in early to ensure their favorite will be available. Poor souls with allergies can request a no-cat room.

A casualty of the Obamaconomy

I recently looked up the hotel’s website and was disappointed to find that the domain name was being “parked.” It turns out that the famous landmark hotel that had been established in 1856, had failed to survive the Obama administration. At least all of the cats who once provided companship for the guests still have homes.

Anderson House, Minnesota’s oldest hotel, closes

A voice-mail message at the storied hotel in Wabasha starts out with a promising welcome.

Then comes a sigh, and these words, “We are sad to say that due to the bad economics that are going on, the Historic Anderson House has had to close its doors.”

Until it stopped operating Thursday, the Anderson House had been the longest running inn in the state. It was built in 1856 when Wabasha was a bustling Mississippi River town.

The building is on the National Register of Historic Places, but may be more famous for its collection of cats that guests could bring into their rooms for the night.

Fancher said that the more than dozen cats that resided at the hotel have been adopted by friends and former employees.

Because I am violently-allergic to cats, this story gave me a chill. I just hope all those cats were humanely euthanized, so they don’t add to the world’s climbing dander-count.

    :(

The cats were all adopted out and have new homes.

AFAIK, you can’t get cat allergies just from READING a Caturday thread.

Cat allergy shots are a lot more effective than they used to be. You might consider desensitization if you are worried about serious consequences from accidental exposure to cat allergens.

And please be nice. After all, kitties aren’t exchanging messages about doing any harm to YOU.

    well sorta like this (grin)

Democrats were frustrated today with Barack Obama’s radical stance on the Ground Zero Mosque. Obama supports a mosque at Ground Zero along with only 20% of voters. A vast majority of Americans do not want a victory mosque built near the former World Trade buildings.

“I would prefer the president be a little more of a politician and a little less of a college professor,” former Rep. Martin Frost (D-Tex.), who once ran the House Democratic campaign arm, wrote in POLITICO’s Arena. “While a defensible position, it will not play well in the parts of the country where Democrats need the most help

    Lucky kitty!

I lost one 3 years ago this month that I’d had 18 years- got him from the shelter. One of ours was a near-feral cat that’s missing her left rear foot. Karen took her in, got her fixed, and got her tamed to where she’s one of the most affectionate of all of ‘em. 2 of the others are her grandkitties, from different litters. Another one just wandered up & kept hanging around her house until she took her in.

They were stereotypical at best and racist at worst.

First of all, NOTHING I said was racist. Considering Blacks are about 14% of Americans, yet they make up about 40% of Americans collecting welfare, as compared to about 6% of the white Americans, who make up about 60% of the population.

And furthermore, my point about the fact that I have very little respect for most of them, is, as I stated, because of the people crooks they continually re-elect year after year to represent them- Rangel, Waters, Jackson-Lee, etc., and the fact that 95% of them vote for one party, decade after decade, even though that party uses them and had made most of their lives worse than the average black family’s was before LBJ’s Great Society almost 50 years ago. Sorry, I’m not going to apologize, because nothing I said was untrue.

In fact the polls now say a majority of Democrats do not like the location, have Democrats too gone all racist now?

I think it’s fair to say your POV has become more nuanced in the last few years, after you saw what happened to the anti-Jihad movement.

There were statements you made, where you came flat out against a Palestinian State, supported Serge Trikovick, among other things, etc, that were to the right of how I felt (and baffled me), and that today would definitely be beyond the pale here at LGF.

Oh, bullshit. Just because I posted links to a few articles by Trifkovic doesn’t mean I “supported” him.

Guess what? In the days after 9/11 I was trying to learn about radical Islam. I wasn’t already an expert. Every link I posted was not a reflection of my personal opinions.

And some of the people who came right out to the forefront after 9/11 turned out to be raving bigots, who hid it pretty well for a while.

I guess this is going to be the new argument tactic — dig up my old posts and throw them at me. How fucking tedious.

I’m enjoying watching CJ squirm. Didn’t he right off Robert and Pamela for linking to people he didn’t agree with?

    OH! MY! GOD!
    I understand now
ya’ll really got to check this out

here is just a small part

THE BASIC LAWS OF HUMAN STUPIDITY
    by Carlo M. Cipolla
    THE POWER OF STUPIDITY

It is not difficult to understand how social, political and institutional power enhances the damaging potential of a stupid person. But one still has to explain and understand what essentially it is that makes a stupid person dangerous to other people – in other words what constitutes the power of stupidity.

Essentially stupid people are dangerous and damaging because reasonable people find it difficult to imagine and understand unreasonable behaviour. An intelligent person may understand the logic of a bandit. The bandit’s actions follow a pattern of rationality: nasty rationality, if you like, but still rationality. The bandit wants a plus on his account. Since he is not intelligent enough to devise ways of obtaining the plus as well as providing you with a plus, he will produce his plus by causing a minus to appear on your account. All this is bad, but it is rational and if you are rational you can predict it. You can foresee a bandit’s actions, his nasty manoeuvres and ugly aspirations and often can build up your defenses.

With a stupid person all this is absolutely impossible as explained by the Third Basic Law. A stupid creature will harass you for no reason, for no advantage, without any plan or scheme and at the most improbable times and places. You have no rational way of telling if and when and how and why the stupid creature attacks. When confronted with a stupid individual you are completely at his mercy. Because the stupid person’s actions do not conform to the rules of rationality, it follows that:

    a) one is generally caught by surprise by the attack; b) even when one becomes aware of the attack, one cannot organize a rational defense, because the attack itself lacks any rational structure.

The fact that the activity and movements of a stupid creature are absolutely erratic and irrational not only makes defense problematic but it also makes any counter-attack extremely difficult – like trying to shoot at an object which is capable of the most improbable and unimaginable movements. This is what both Dickens and Schiller had in mind when the former stated that “with stupidity and sound digestion man may front much” and the latter wrote that “against stupidity the very Gods fight in vain.”

We really, really do need more presidents like “Silent Cal”:

Coolidge often seemed uncomfortable among fashionable Washington society; when asked why he continued to attend so many of their dinner parties, he replied, “Got to eat somewhere.”
