NCAA football open thread! (Lecture is cancelled for the holiday weekend)

Filed under College Football, Open thread, Sports at September 4th, 2010 - 9:56 am

Since it is a holiday weekend, classes are canceled!  The Saturday lecture will return next week. In its place is this:

HOOOORRAYYYY!!!!! Its my favorite time of year! NCAA football is upon us!

This will be weekly, every Saturday after the lecture is the open NCAA thread for those of us watching football and not wanting to soil the respectable threads with cries of ‘Hook ‘em Horns’ or ‘Soooeeeee Piggie!’ and we sure don’t want to run Ralphie through a serious thread! Some of our writers would get really mad.

How about that PITT v Utah game on Thursday night. The polls had my beloved Panthers ranked an early #15 and the pick to win the Big East. PITT has the talent, and i hope that Coach Wanstedt doesn’t do his normal routine of wining just enough games to keep his job. It’s time to produce, Coach! (late edit: They lost to an un-ranked Utah. Coach Wanstedt failed to win the big game again, the offensive play calling was predictable and  abysmal. It is time for him to go, he cant coach his way out of a wal*mart bag.)

The top 5 in all of the polls this early are 1 Alabama, 2 Ohio State and then 3-5 in no order Boise State, Florida , and Texas. The Boise State Broncos from the  WAC just wont go away. They cant move to the SEC or the Big 10, so they try to make their non-conference schedule as tough as they can…and some teams just dodge them and refuse to schedule them because they are so dangerous, especially on the Smurf Turf.  Is it time for Boise state to play for a national championship if they are the only undefeated?

And from Los Angeles, the USC Trojan’s got a dump truck full of sanctions handed to them by the NCAA for the Reggie Bush/sports agent money escapade.  The Coaching staff and administration claimed they knew nothing of this, so the NCAA cited gross incompetence and a complete lack of administrative oversight against the program and the coaches.  So its no 2004 BCS championship, deletion of the entire 2005 season, and are banned from postseason play for two years and will lose 20+ scholarships. Players will also be allowed to transfer to other schools without the one year sit down time.

And how about the brilliant move that the Big 10 made by getting Nebraska to join the division next year, what a great fit! I cant wait for a Penn State Nebraska series. Great call Big 10!

Notre Dame has a new coach, Brian Kelly, formerly of Cincinnati.  Coach Kelly did a great job of building up the Bearcats and left his contract early. He got some heat for this. But, the Coach is an Irish Catholic from Boston, ‘Head Coach of Notre Dame Football’ is his dream job, so I think no ill feelings should be felt toward him. Its a once in a lifetime opportunity and i wish him well, except against my Panthers.

What games are you watching?

So, this is an open thread…it will run until the overnight behind the other threads while there is NCAA football on. Refer to here when talking football, and remember, lecture starts up next saturday!

Foodie Update: And here’s lunch: Andouille and Israeli Couscous stuffed italian peppers…its cajun, jewish, italian fusion food.  And damn are these stuffed peppers excellent!

Will you be attending the Dave Wannstedt beheading or is it too early for you to talk about it? At any rate, is was a heck of a game in spite of all the sloppy play.

i want him gone FIRED and frog marched out of town.

he’s a great recruiter but a lousy and predicable coach. he manages to beat the rival WVa mountaineers and that keeps him form getting fired.

the loss to utah was an embarrassment and should have not happened.

I’m looking forward to the TCU -- Oregon State game. Mrs. Funn is a TCU alum so I always pull for the Froggies. She couldn’t care less. It’s great to see the Frogs at #6. They last won a national championship in 1938, or sometime thereabout, and I like the idea that they could have a shot at it this year. If anything holds them back it will be their weak schedule in a weak conference. Mountain West is kinda sucky.

I’ve always pulled for Dave over the years since he left the Cowboys. But you’re right. He just doesn’t have the onions to win the big game, pro or college. Is there someone on the current staff that might replace him or will they bring in someone from outside?

last thing I heard is that OSU and Michigan will be in the same division and will still play each other in the final conference game.

they would have been absolutely nuts to nix that game.

of course, I said that when they ruined the OU-Nebraska series

This year’s UT-OU will be played at Spaceship Jerry Jones. Which reminds me of a funny story from several years ago. There was a big flapadoodle between the NFL and the cable networks about the scheduling of pro games. Jerry Jones went to NY to have a talk with the big jamokes at the cable companies but they didn’t agree with Jerry. Jerry flew back to Dallas and was met by the press at the airport. He said “I’m very disappointed with the cable companies. ALL THEY’RE INTERESTED IN IS MONEY!” BWAAAHAHAHAHAH

    @ huckfunn:

I lived in Dallas when Jerry bought the team and fired Tom Landry ( in a very scumbag way IIRC )

around that time, I remember a tropical storm named Jerry actually coming ashore down around Houston.

and the local sportscaster said ” Hot air Mass Jerry” has blown into Dallas

    ooops!

Six North Carolina starters — defensive tackle Marvin Austin, cornerback Charles Brown, cornerback Kendric Burney, wide receiver Greg Little, defensive end Michael McAdoo and defensive end Robert Quinn — have been declared ineligible for the Tar Heels’ season-opening game against No. 21 LSU for “violating school and/or NCAA rules,” the university announced Friday.

Secretary of State Elaine Marshall is reviewing whether sports agent laws have been broken. That probe follows an NCAA investigation that focused initially on whether Austin and Little got improper benefits from agents but has since expanded to include possible academic violations.

Marshall’s office has sent out notices to agents asking them not to destroy evidence or documents.

Damn! Obama has forgotten the First Rule of Holes:

The White House is under pressure to show tangible results in lifting growth and hiring before the Nov. 2 election, when Obama’s Democrats face punishment from voters anxious about near double-digit unemployment.

“I will be addressing a broader package of ideas next week,” Obama told reporters in the White House Rose Garden.

We are confident that we are moving in the right direction. But we want to keep this recovery moving stronger and accelerate the job growth that is needed so desperately all across the country.”

Thge Republicans should take that quote and make a good commercial of it. Just keep him repeating it while flashing stats about unemployment, growth (or lack thereof), and so on on the screen. Dangerously out-of-touch, or is he telling the truth and he like 9.5% unemployment just fine? Either way, the Republicans should break that one off in him. We need to absolutely destroy his Presidency in the next six weeks.

I would kick the corruption known as “Collage Sports” out on its sorry ass. Schools are for getting an education. If the pro teams need a farm system to produce players for their various leagues then they can setup and pay for their own and stop leaching off of the schools (taxpayers).

(This is a drive-by turd in the punch bowl. )

Recession. The Donks get the bulk of their money from the rich, the Reps get the bulk of their money in small donations from average people. Times are tight for those Average People, while those swimming in lucre are still, well, swimming in it. One of the Big Lies of the 20th Century is that the Democrats are the party of the little people. They aren’t and never were.

100% agreement, but you will never get that through. The schools are about to price themselves out of the market, though. I wouldn’t have been able to afford my four-year degree without scholorships, and that was 20 years ago. Nowdays, forget about it. But the web may become the learning vehicle of choice over the next decade. That is how I intend to persue my masters degree.

If the pro corporations need a farm system to produce workers for their various companies then they can setup and pay for their own and stop leaching off of the schools (taxpayers).
(This is a drive-by turd in the punch bowl. )

    howz that?

Haha, you know the Europeans allways feel superior to the USA because of their education. There are now politicians who want exact do what you want to eliminate. In the future we will have plumbers/electricians/machinists etc. with a fake “master degree” if they get their will. The same people who have destroyed our university system with the “Bologna process”.

the german system just baffled me, from what i understood about it…pick a trade or college early in life and you get on that track and stay there…

that doenst leave a lot of latititude later in life when ya know what you want to do.

Kinda like how elementary school teachers need master’s degrees.

Of course, the “special” people will always have degrees from “special” colleges, so the state colleges can put out these toy degrees.

Generally speaking if it says FLA on it, I’m pulling for someone else. If the Gators, Canes or Noles were playing the taliban, I’d have a tough time finding someone to root for.

Michigan and Ohio State will be in different divisions but will continue to play each other each year. They will play on the last day as usual. That means they will possibly play each other two times if they meet in the championship game.
