BLOGMOCRACY IN ACTION! This is a guest post form our own Osprey. Pamwe Chete!

The Hunyani attack: “A Deafening Silence”

Yesterday was the anniversary of the Hunyani disaster. On September 3rd, 1978, Rhodesian Airways flight 825, the 52 passenger Vickers Viscount Hunyani, flying from the popular Kariba Lake resort to Salisbury was shot down by ZIPRA guerillas with a Soviet-made Strela anti-aircraft missile. Most of those who survived the crash, including several children, were shot to death and bayonetted by the guerillas. 8 crash survivors, adults and children, were lucky enough to escape into the bush and were rescued by Rhodesian police and military forces the following day.

With the sole exception of the International Airline Pilots Association, there was no condemnation by the “international community” for this vicious attack on a civilian aircraft by the African Marxist “liberation forces”. Even from those who should have spoken out in the Western democracies, Britain and the United States, cowed by political correctness against giving what could be considered support of Ian Smith’s white minority government. Instead, there was only what the Dean of the Anglican Church in Rhodesia, the Very Reverend John da Costa, in a sermon to an overflow crowd memorial service at the Anglican Cathedral in Salisbury a few days later, termed “a deafening silence”.

“Nobody who holds sacred the dignity of human life can be anything but sickened at the events attending the crash of the Viscount Hunyani. Survivors have the greatest call on the sympathy and assistance of every other human being. The horror of the crash was bad enough, but that this should have been compounded by the murder of the most savage and treacherous sort leaves us stunned with disbelief and brings revulsion in the minds of anyone deserving the name “human”. This bestiality, worse than anything in recent history, stinks in the nostrils of heaven. But are we deafened by the voice of protest from nations which call themselves “civilised”? We are not. Like men in the story of the good Samaritan. They ‘pass by on the other side’. One listens for condemnation by Dr David Owen, himself a medical doctor, trained to help all in need. One listens, and the silence is deafening. One listens for loud condemnation by the President of the United States, himself a man from the Bible-Baptist belt , and once again the silence is deafening. One listens for condemnation by the Pope, by the Archbishop of Canterbury, by all who love the name of God. Again the silence is deafening. I do not believe in white supremacy. I do not believe in black supremacy either……The ghastliness of this ill-fated flight from Kariba will be burned upon our memories for years to come. For others far from our borders, it is an intellectual matter, not one which affects them deeply.”
A complete recording of Rev. da Costa’s sermon can be heard here.

In his own reaction to the attack, the Rhodesian folk singer John Edmond recorded the song, “You Ain’t No Hero”. (Warning:graphic images in youtube link of African Christian villagers maimed or killed by the “liberation forces” for “collaboration”.) While the song was specifically about the Hunyani attack, the lyrics could be applied anywhere, from Belfast to Sderot to the World Trade Center, that terrorists attack innocent civilians to advance their “cause”:

You ain’t no hero
When you kill a child and cannot cry
You ain’t no hero
When you shoot a liner from the sky
You ain’t no hero
When you’re preaching fear and hate
And you shy away from battle
With the soldiers of our state

Retaliation from the Rhodesian military was soon forthcoming, a daring cross border combined air and ground attack against the terrorist camps in Zambia, the storied “Green Leader” raid. We will examine that event in a future post.

When the Politically Correct kill the Politically Incorrect, there is no tragedy. Witness how the murders of Jews by Palestinians provoke no outrage, only demands for the Jews to compromise with the Palestinians. This is an artifact of the Left, and it must be destroyed. That won’t happen overnight. Maybe the first step is to flip who is politically correct, and who is politically incorrect. Then at least Israel (and America) could get down to the bloody business of finishing this war without so much whining.

A second Strela attack on a Rhodesian Airways Viscount, the Umniati, occurred in Feb. 1979. This time the missile hit a fuel tank and the airliner turned into a fireball. There were no survivors. Again, crickets from the “international community”.

The terrs were trying to scare away tourists to damage the Rhodesian economy. Kariba Lake was a popular tourist destination for Rhodesians and folks from other Commonwealth nations…Brits, Aussies, Canucks.

Soviets helping blacks kill whites. There would be no condemnation of that. My question is, if the chattering classes of the world are as blatent and obvious about the sides they have taken through the years, why do we still care what they think and say? Stalin famously asked how many divisions the Pope had. The same is true of the Leftist “opinion” classes. What, exactly, are they going to do if the civilized world tells them to go fuck themselves, and gets on with the business of defending civilization from the savages?

Just putting it in those terms will no doubt provoke a wave of angst from the predictible sources, but what does that matter? What can they really do if we don’t let them?

You are welcome. We need to keep the memory of what was done to the Rhodesians alive. They were really the first nation to be targeted by what Rodan likes to call “the tranzi progressive axis”…the Marxist nations supplied the guns and “anti-racist” leftists in the Western Media the propaganda. Like US forces in Vietnam, the Rhodesian forces won most of their battles against ZANU and ZIPRA. They were undone politically by the UN and Western leftist political correctness.

Depends what part you are talking about. The British, I think, which would of course include the Rhodesians, were making a real attempt to bring the Africans into the modern world and Commonwealth society. The French and the Belgians, not so much, I think they were far more exploitative of their African colonies without giving much in return to the native population and were more brutal than the British. Don’t know enough about the Portuguese to speak to their situation.

  30. 30 | September 4, 2010 3:07 pm

    @ coldwarrior:

You have to understand, the “anti-colonialists” want the Africans living as savages, in mud huts with a dung fire, swept by plauges of malaria, HIV, and other diseases, with average life expectancies in the 50s. They are egalitarian in this, because they want us living like that, too. Not them, of course. They’ll jet around in their gulfstreams keeping tabs on the Great Unwashed, culling the herd from time to time, and living as long as quality medicine can extend their lives. That is their vision for the world. It could never really work, but they, being as highly educated as they are, don’t get that.

this is a funny story, we are friends with a nigerian doctor (who is a ‘head man’ in nigeria) that used to live near here. his family came over and he wanted to do a thanksgiving dinner. so i offered to cook it and serve it at our house. it was a great time, 10 nigerians and me and my wife celebrating thanksgiving! as a thank you i received the tribal clothes of the head man. they are very colorful and i very rarely wear them, they are in safe keeping.

Great film, but one point that should be made with regard to mercenaries and the Rhodesian situation is that the Americans, Brits, Aussies and Canucks who served with the Rhodesian forces were foreign volunteers, not mercenaries. They drew the same pay as the Rhodesian soldiers did.

King Leopold of Belgium was an absolute pig.

Leopold is chiefly remembered as the founder and sole owner of the Congo Free State, a private project undertaken by the King. He used Henry Morton Stanley to help him lay claim to the Congo, an area now known as the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Powers at Berlin Conference agreed to set up the Free State in 1885, on condition that the inhabitants were to be brought into the modern world and that all nations be allowed to trade freely. From the beginning, however, Leopold essentially ignored these conditions and ran the Congo brutally, by proxy through a mercenary force, for his own personal gain. He extracted a personal fortune from the Congo, initially by the collection of ivory, and after a rise in the price of rubber in the 1890s by forcing the native population to collect sap from rubber plants. His harsh regime was directly or indirectly responsible for the death of millions of people. The Congo became one of the most infamous international scandals of the early 20th century, and Leopold was ultimately forced to relinquish control of it to the government of Belgium.

Planned Parenthood Clinic Firebombed in Madera, California
US NEWS | Sat, Sep 4, 2010 at 12:02:29 pm PDT

In Madera, California, police and FBI are investigating a firebomb attack against a Planned Parenthood office that has been open for 20 years without incident: Molotov Cocktail thrown at Madera’s Planned Parenthood.

This attack comes one week after a brick was thrown through the window of a local mosque and anti-Muslim signs posted on its walls, by a group using the name “American Nationalist Brotherhood.” One of the signs: “No Temple for the god of terrorism at Ground Zero.”

Excuse me for being morbid, but it would be funnier than hell if it turned out that it was a muzz that did it. What would Chucky do in that case.

Also, does it strike anyone else as a bit odd that Chunk is comparing a brick to a Molotov cocktail?

That just shows how evil and insidious Beck really is.

He’s able to inspire people to commit attacks who don’t even listen to him, and blame it on libs.

Authentic ones have all been snapped up by collectors. I believe there is an outfit in South Africa that is doing reproductions for the AirSoft crowd. Are you familiar with the FALFILES? It is collecting and shooting FALs that sparked my interest in Rhodesia.
The marketplace section there might be a good place to ask. I’d like a Rhodie camo pattern boonie hat myself. I’ll try to find a link for that South African outfit again. Ah…here it is. Trident Military. They have a new line of Rhodie repro camo coming in January.

You gotta admire guys who would go into battle in the African bush, with all the damn bugs and poisonous snakes and sh**, wearing shorts!

Boots, shorts, bdu shirt, boonie hat, canteen, bush knife, a chest rig with 100 rounds of ammo and a FAL. Rhodie style.

He may have been drinking a few too many of the non-Molotov variety.

CW, pretty weird shit in PA…

Butts arrested in Boob murder case. On Friday, state police arrested Kermit Butts, 26, of Madisonburg, Centre County, in connection with the killing last year of Samuel Boob, 29, of Potter Township. Previously arrested and charged with first degree murder were Boob’s wife, Miranda, who allegedly planned the slaying, and Ronald Heichel of Bellefonte, accused of shooting of the victim twice with a shotgun, according to police. Butts allegedly drove Heichel, a co-worker, to the victim’s house, where the shooting occurred, and then drove Heichel away. Butts was charged with aggravated assault and providing aid while hindering apprehension or prosecution. Court papers say that Miranda Boob and Heichel were lovers, according to the Centre Daily Times.

    Actually that is incorrect.

I know for a fact that the ZIPRA scumbags got their hands on a British Rapier missile from Zambia and used it to shoot down the second Viscount aircraft.

Interesting…you might want to contact the folks that run the memorial site. Everything I have read indicates it was a Strela as well. Was the Rhodesian Govt. concealing that fact because of the peace negotiations in which President Kaunda of Zambia was a participant?
