wow! we hit 600 way too fast, here’s the next ONT!

Comments

Comments and respectful debate are both welcome and encouraged.

Comments are the sole opinion of the comment writer, just as each thread posted is the sole opinion or post idea of the administrator that posted it or of the readers that have written guest posts for the Blogmocracy.

Obscene, abusive, or annoying remarks may be deleted or moved to spam for admin review, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their content by any other commenter or the admins of this Blogmocracy.

We're not easily offended and don't want people to think they have to walk on eggshells around here (like at another place that shall remain nameless) but of course, there is a limit to everything.

Play nice!

Does anybody here have any figures for viewership on this blog, and about whether we are getting more people to read our stuff?

I hasten to add that my interest in viewership has NOTHING for commercial purposes or selling cookbooks or tip jars or anything like that, but for the purposes of encouraging healthy debate within the US and other western societies.

Healthy debate is the one thing that we are lacking in the public sphere, and this blog is the best place for it, IMO.

What’s wrong with commerce? Every entity needs a viable commercial model to survive and thrive. Monetisation of a product exposes its value and weaknesses. A healthy revenue stream is a good foundation to build on.
    Bring on the adverts!

In some ways, I see where you’re coming from. But I never bothered with trying to monetize my own blog, because I like to try to push the envelope of what topics are allowable for debate. Relying on advertisers might raise the temptation to pull one’s punches so as not to offend somebody who is paying the bills.

Here you get snapshots, updated every minute, so very low bandwidth usage. I’ve sent in a guest post that may run tomorrow with video highlights of the BOP removal and landing the replacement one.

The failBop will be seized by the Feds and studied to death. There will be an entire circus. But how can they really determine anything after all that erosive sand and liquid has chewed it up?

The new stack they sealed it with had a stuck ram and only had a faction of the free-flow duration. The current crop is a crap shoot, 50/50 at best. The Canadian equipment is in far better overall condition.

Ok, I found you a still photo here. That is about 2/3rds of the failBop stack, sitting on the white Cameron Collet Connector. With red jacks on the corners of the Bop skid.

That is the deck of the Q4000, and the BOP is right above the Moon pool where it was pulled up. The deck surrounded by the yellow rails slid open, then slid back under the BOP.

Thanks. Doesn’t look much like the dry-land ones I’m familiar with; everything is enclosed.

I guess the key area to check will be the actuators for the rams, to see if it can be determined if they ever moved at all, or were capable of so doing.

If the rams moved a little, but got washed or blocked by debris, that’s one thing. If the rams never moved at all, that’s something entirely different.

Anyhow, it’s off to the rack for me.

It’s almost irrelevant why the failBop didn’t work. A better question is why they all are so under par? The lot of them are past their sell by date and nobody can certify them going forward. At least half of them should be used as moorings or scrapped, and Cameron, Hydril and Shaffer should be flooded with orders for the latest models.

BP paid and will pay for this oil spill. In fact we all will pay,but please,no more jobs lost.

Well said. The economic damage of the hysterical over-reaction and demonisation of BP and the oil industry, is vastly greater than anything BP, Et. Al. have done.

What happened shouldn’t have and didn’t need to happen, there was some overconfidence and recklessness. But Hayward was quite correct in predicting the environmental damage would be small.

Alternatively, the damage done by the devastation of BP’s share value and the US drilling industry is vast, and also the result of recklessness and arrogance.

I actually got nasty with some people in real life a few days ago. There was a comment in a bar about “oil free dressing” and some asshole said “If British Petroleum knew anything about oil free we would not be in this mess”

I said something along the lines of “You should have flipping (sp) said that to AMOCO!”

(note… most of bp USA is what was AMOCO, also you thought the EXXON Valdis was a mess? Look up AMOCO Cadiz. The French billed the USA about $2 billion in 1978 for cleanup they got paid squat)

I had that in real life here! When I mentioned how the unjustified drop in share prices was affecting pensions in the UK then the answer was “They deserve it”

When I said about the fact that bp was not paying any US taxes this quarter because they made a loss I was greeted with “They should pay taxes anyway!!!”

Well duh.. bp is paying out $6 billion plus in cleanup, $5 billion a year for four years to acorn, obama, slush fund, never see that money again, and on top of that you want them to pay tax on the profits they don’t have?

    It bears repeating.

The reason many companies and individual do business in the United States is because they have the protection of the rule of law. Yes, the US is a very litigious nation, but both sides get the same legal protection and opportunities, and there is recourse to higher courts.

In the case of the Oil and Gas industry, there is a $75 million dollar statutory limit on liability. This is meant as an encouragement to explore in the US. With this unprecedented action by a US President to effectively nationalise BP’s assets by demanding a $20 Billion slush fund that makes a mockery of the rule of law, those seeking to do business in the United States now know that the US is always just one election away from becoming a banana republic.

10,150 British jobs lost, millions of old people in the UK without pensions but the state would have looked after them.

22,800 AMERICAN jobs lost, millions of old AMERICAN people with no pension fund. No state to look after the old people with no AMOCO pension.

    There you have it.

bp didn’t spill squat. bp hired a bunch of fucking cowboys to drill a hole that they had bought rights to.

I am glad that bp is paying up and maybe recovering money later.

The federal government sure as hell was not paying for anything at all. I expected the United States of America to jump in and stop the mess, to clean up the mess and send the invoice for the costs later to the parties responsible.

That did not happen and that to me is very odd.

I think the reason things were handled the way they were is that it allows Obama to demonize big business & the oil industry, and to push the ‘cap & tax’ scheme.

Sure, we can and should develop (privately) things like wind & solar power. But neither of those will be able to handle our base load power requirements, not for a long time if ever. @ coldwarrior:
Not good. For one, there’s the aftershocks. Up to 5.4 on the richter scale.

On top of that, the weather system that passed through here yesterday and has left Central Victoria under flood waters, is heading their way.

Weakened and exposed buildings plus a serious soaking is not a good picture. Must have been a gloomy Father’s day in New Zealand today.

Especially with the rain and winds. Rain will further contaminate the water supply and the winds (100 km per hour and higher) could easily topple shaky buildings.

Well maybe the New Zealand army will probably step in but our government is in caretaker mode so I doubt that they’ll do much unless things get a lot worse in the next 24 hours.

There is talk that Australia will cop some financial fallout from the earthquake, as Australian businesses in NZ were affected.

    well this is nice

Tennessee ranks last of the 50 states and Washington D.C. in terms of debt load. And this time, it’s a good thing.

The state’s top officials are pretty proud of the recent ranking that shows for its size, Tennessee has less debt than any other state government.

    Iowahawk is on fire today

    Barack, Can We Talk?

Barack, can we, uh, talk for a few minutes?

Oh, nothing. It’s just that it just seems we haven’t had a chance to talk for a while. I mean, I know we’ve both been busy for the past year or so. You with your fundraisers and golfing and stuff, and me with all those appointments at the unemployment office. But you know I think it’s important in a relationship like ours to keep the lines of communication open.

So anyway, I’ve been think that… look, this is really hard. God. Do you remember when we met at that big party in Denver back in 08? I mean when I saw you across that crowded convention floor, it was like, Oh My God. I don’t think I ever saw anything like you before. I was on the rebound from a bad relationship and you were so tall and articulate and, well hot. And then I couldn’t believe that of all the democracies in the room you picked me out!

Yeah I know my some of my friends warned me you were trouble, and that it was the alcohol talking. But I knew that if we gave it a chance we could make it work. You and me, together. And after you moved in, I really think we did for a while. I mean, you’ve really helped me get over my inhibitions and hangups, and I like to think I’ve really helped you grow and discover yourself. Like last year when I lent you $800 billion to pay for your demo tape and new rims for the Cadillac

    read it all
