Too bad there’s not a video of what happened to the pelican’t shortly after the ass end of the ass realizes there’s an ass-biter on his tail, because if there was, I’d definitely post it on this Overnight Open Thread.

Well bite my ass I’m first.
Well -- Ijust got off the phone with my little sister, the nurse. She was whining to me about the day shift vs the night shift people on her unit.
Here is some utoobage to get her through the night
Good night Bunk. Thank you for the ONT’s.
I bet the next thing that happened was a serious ass-kicking.
This picture is bugging me out!
@ Calo:
Butt (heh) you just got here!

My Dad would say when we were kids, “Before cars you’d read in the paper about every two weeks so-and-so got kicked in the head and hasn’t been the same since”. He wasn’t/isn’t romantic about the good ole days; he likes cars!
@ Calo:
Next time you hear from Lonnie, tell him I’ve got something he left behind.
Great picture!
Anybody see that? Philly’s pitched a no hitter… tough contenders…

I was wondering the same thing, as I have not had time to peruse all the threads.
I hope the admins have contacted him to let him know what’s gone down and invite him to come back. He’s a good kid – very sharp. I miss him.
@ lobo91:
Hey, how’s it goin’?
I’m off to watch Criminal Minds in a few minutes.
New season, new episodes ya know…
So get this – I had to paid off one of my credit cards and then last week I had to charge like $48 on it for meds for my cats. I paid that off 5 days later. So today I get an e-mail that my Chase statement is ready to view. What?!? Was paid off – balance should be zero.
Those rat-bastards charged me $36.75 in interest charges – $14 for a “purchase interest charge” and the remaining charges for “balance transfer charges” (I didn’t transfer anything)… WTF???
I’m calling Chase in the morning. I’m so mad. I pay off the bill and then they still find a way to gouge me. Rat-bastards…
Hey, where’s “F” been lately?
lobo91 wrote:
He showed up at DoD, last I saw.
OK, off to watch tv… will check in after Criminal Minds if I am still awake… good night everybody.

Hi there.
Still breathing, anyway.
I get to have an MRI on Saturday…so far, that’s looking like it’ll be the high point of the week.

@ savages_girl:
Lose Chase. They ain’t WaMu. I’ve heard nothing but horror stories since Chase took over, and I’ve also heard horror stories from old Chase customers back east.
@ doriangrey:
I’m actually looking forward to it.
Well, I’m looking forward to it being done, anyway. Maybe now they’ll be able to do something about my neck.

You did!
I can’t help it. When I went to England, I started talking like a Brit. My sister in law paraded me in front of her family in order to show off the American with the authentic accent.

I practice meditation in a Buddhist style, and am offended by this condemnation.
Some of these “religious leaders” need to tend to their OWN flock and quit trying to tell the rest of us what IS or IS NOT Christian.
I’ve read two versions of the Bible, KJV and NIV, and found nothing that says that I can’t use these practices to enter into a state of serenity with only the Creator and I.
@ Bumr50:
Well, I reside in Louisville and can tell you that Mohler oft goes off the deep end. He and his ilk give a lot of good people a bad name (no I’m not Baptist).
Yoga isn’t a friggin religion, and I’m with you, there are a lot of things far mor important than the question of whether Yoga is un-Christian.
Having grown up in the “old” Catholic Church, I can tell you that it had a lot of meditative and mystical qualities that just aren’t found so much today, and I always found it good for the soul.
Maybe a little quiet meditation and contemplation will encourage people like Mohler to STFU.
MacDuff wrote:
I am SO with you.
I’m a confirmed Catholic, and even though my wife and I attend an AOG church (a compromise between my Catholicism and her Salvation Army quasi-Methodist services), I still have recently made it a point to attend a Catholic mass at least once a month to experience the solemnity and rituality that Catholicism brings.
It’s not that I have any less respect for the more agressive and outward worships that Baptists and Pentecostals practice, it’s just that for ME personally, I need the quiet contemplation that Catholicism provides, because it is only then that I feel in Communion with God.
I also suffer from an anxiety disorder, and meditation and mindfulness have been a lifesaver for me. There are a number of books dedicated to reconciling Buddhist practices with Christianity, and I intend on purchasing one in the near future.
@ coldwarrior:
Take Off You Hoser!
@ Bumr50:
Peace, brother. It’s sometime hard to find the old-style Catholic masses anymore, at least around here, but they do still exist. Many Catholic churches have become “protestantized” in an effort to become more popular, I think. Back in the day, I grew up in a Catholic community, and evangelization was simply not in the mix – you were either Catholic or you weren’t. As a result, I never felt quite comfortable with evangelicals because it’s a bit foreign to me. It’s not that I dislike them, in fact I have a grat deal of admiration for them, but, like you, it’s just not my cup of tea.
For me, faith has a much more inward and contemplative quality and the ritualization, and, yes, mystical (I know that word may well stir up a hornets nest) surroundings of Catholicism provides that for me.
I think that Catholicism taps into the natural need that man has for quiet meditation; Gregorian chants, prayer repetition in the form of the rosary and, as you said, the overal rituality tend to promote that sort of meditation.
Have a wonderful day, my friend!
BuddyG wrote:
Not exactly. I went over to MadMenYourself to create the avatar.
MacDuff wrote:
I remember hearing about this uproar in the 70′s actually. Back when it was called Transcendental Meditation. There are certain aspects of religion to it. I don’t know if modern practitioners of yoga do this, but one thing TM people were asked to do was bring vegetables or fruit to the class. This would be arranged on a table and would stay there for the whole class while they stretched and chanted.
I think part of the Hindu religion regards this as an offering. The food would be taken home because the “gods” would only subsist on the spiritual essence of the offering.
Keep in mind, this was explained to me by my mother almost 30 years ago. She may have been mistaken in her assumptions. You will have to admit though that there is religious meaning in the practice of yoga.
@ MacDuff:
you should attend an orthodox liturgy.
yoga is not a religion, it is an exercise in mind and body just like martial arts.
coldwarrior wrote:
My wife is taking a yoga class and is bitching and moaning how much her body hurts? I told her to stop taking it then, and she walks away from me?
Nevergiveup wrote:

@ PaladinPhil:
This essay, while certainly not doctrine (and quite honestly just discovered by me), sort of sums up how modern Christian practitioners of Yoga have incorporated it into their faith. It must be noted that I simply meditate currently, and have not yet graduated to Yoga rituals. However the basic premise holds for both practices IMO.
@ Bumr50:
I have studied a lot of Eastern Mysticism (part of a truly thorough study of Eastern Martial Arts), and there is nothing incompatible about most of the practices. It is the intent of the practices that matters (and if you are Zen, there should be no intent). The religious foundations of Eastern philosophy are so different than those of Western thought that there is plenty of room for the two to, ahem, coexist.
now, see…golf is a religion, and its a church day!
FORE!!!
coldwarrior wrote:
It’s funny you should mention that. There’s an Orthodox church just a couple of blocks from me (it’s where I vote), and I’ve always been curious about it. I do know that they’re heavy into iconography, and have some similarities to the Roman church.
@ Iron Fist:
We should just start using the word “Oexist.”
That would really hack them off!

PaladinPhil wrote:
Well, I think that spiritualism and religious practice can be compatible, so long as there is no direct conflict. States of meditation can be achieved through a number of ways.
I’ve heard that John Paul II would spend hours face down on the marble floor of his chapel in deep prayer. I think that one could describe this as a meditative state.
Catholics (and Orthodox Christians) use iconography and ritual repetition to focus themselves into contemplative/meditative states.
I don’t necessarily see the two as mutually exclusive.
MacDuff wrote:
you should go, the catholic church came out of the orthodox church.
rodan went to our orthodox church last time he was here and loved it.
you will enjoy liturgy immensely, i send you this formal invite to attend.
