Too bad there’s not a video of what happened to the pelican’t shortly after the ass end of the ass realizes there’s an ass-biter on his tail, because if there was, I’d definitely post it on this Overnight Open Thread.

Well -- Ijust got off the phone with my little sister, the nurse. She was whining to me about the day shift vs the night shift people on her unit.

Here is some utoobage to get her through the night

Good night Bunk. Thank you for the ONT’s.

My Dad would say when we were kids, “Before cars you’d read in the paper about every two weeks so-and-so got kicked in the head and hasn’t been the same since”. He wasn’t/isn’t romantic about the good ole days; he likes cars!

The early cars weren’t much better. Before automatic ignition, cranking the engine caused a lot of broken arms.

    Talk this way

Pennebaker and his colleagues tracked language use by 2,000 college students responding to class assignments written in different language styles. The results confirmed that language style matching extends to the written word. When an essay question was written in a dry, confusing tone, students responded with dry, confusing answers. If the question took a flighty, casual tone, students responded with “Valley girl”-like answers peppered with “like” and “sorta.”

So get this – I had to paid off one of my credit cards and then last week I had to charge like $48 on it for meds for my cats. I paid that off 5 days later. So today I get an e-mail that my Chase statement is ready to view. What?!? Was paid off – balance should be zero.

Those rat-bastards charged me $36.75 in interest charges – $14 for a “purchase interest charge” and the remaining charges for “balance transfer charges” (I didn’t transfer anything)… WTF???

I’m calling Chase in the morning. I’m so mad. I pay off the bill and then they still find a way to gouge me. Rat-bastards…

Home-made Play-Doh is pretty easy to make. That’ll keep ‘em busy until you bring out the lawn darts. While they’re doing that, mix up a big batch of corn starch and (very little) water. There’s another 20 minutes. Then hose ‘em off and make them watch “Twelve Angry Men.”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) – A Southern Baptist leader who is calling for Christians to avoid yoga and its spiritual attachments is getting plenty of pushback from enthusiasts who defend the ancient practice.

Southern Baptist Seminary President Albert Mohler says the stretching and meditative discipline derived from Eastern religions is not a Christian pathway to God.

Mohler said he objects to “the idea that the body is a vehicle for reaching consciousness with the divine.”

“That’s just not Christianity,” Mohler told The Associated Press.

    ———————————————

Other Christian leaders have said practicing yoga is incompatible with the teachings of Jesus. Pat Robertson has called the chanting and other spiritual components that go along with yoga “really spooky.” California megachurch pastor John MacArthur called yoga a “false religion.” Muslim clerics have banned Muslims from practicing yoga in Egypt, Malaysia and Indonesia, citing similar concerns.

I practice meditation in a Buddhist style, and am offended by this condemnation.

Some of these “religious leaders” need to tend to their OWN flock and quit trying to tell the rest of us what IS or IS NOT Christian.

I’ve read two versions of the Bible, KJV and NIV, and found nothing that says that I can’t use these practices to enter into a state of serenity with only the Creator and I.

  127. 127 | October 7, 2010 7:37 am

    @ Bumr50:

Well, I reside in Louisville and can tell you that Mohler oft goes off the deep end. He and his ilk give a lot of good people a bad name (no I’m not Baptist).

Yoga isn’t a friggin religion, and I’m with you, there are a lot of things far mor important than the question of whether Yoga is un-Christian.

Having grown up in the “old” Catholic Church, I can tell you that it had a lot of meditative and mystical qualities that just aren’t found so much today, and I always found it good for the soul.

Maybe a little quiet meditation and contemplation will encourage people like Mohler to STFU.

    I am SO with you.

I’m a confirmed Catholic, and even though my wife and I attend an AOG church (a compromise between my Catholicism and her Salvation Army quasi-Methodist services), I still have recently made it a point to attend a Catholic mass at least once a month to experience the solemnity and rituality that Catholicism brings.

It’s not that I have any less respect for the more agressive and outward worships that Baptists and Pentecostals practice, it’s just that for ME personally, I need the quiet contemplation that Catholicism provides, because it is only then that I feel in Communion with God.

I also suffer from an anxiety disorder, and meditation and mindfulness have been a lifesaver for me. There are a number of books dedicated to reconciling Buddhist practices with Christianity, and I intend on purchasing one in the near future.

    @ Bumr50:

Peace, brother. It’s sometime hard to find the old-style Catholic masses anymore, at least around here, but they do still exist. Many Catholic churches have become “protestantized” in an effort to become more popular, I think. Back in the day, I grew up in a Catholic community, and evangelization was simply not in the mix – you were either Catholic or you weren’t. As a result, I never felt quite comfortable with evangelicals because it’s a bit foreign to me. It’s not that I dislike them, in fact I have a grat deal of admiration for them, but, like you, it’s just not my cup of tea.

For me, faith has a much more inward and contemplative quality and the ritualization, and, yes, mystical (I know that word may well stir up a hornets nest) surroundings of Catholicism provides that for me.

I think that Catholicism taps into the natural need that man has for quiet meditation; Gregorian chants, prayer repetition in the form of the rosary and, as you said, the overal rituality tend to promote that sort of meditation.

Have a wonderful day, my friend!

I remember hearing about this uproar in the 70′s actually. Back when it was called Transcendental Meditation. There are certain aspects of religion to it. I don’t know if modern practitioners of yoga do this, but one thing TM people were asked to do was bring vegetables or fruit to the class. This would be arranged on a table and would stay there for the whole class while they stretched and chanted.

I think part of the Hindu religion regards this as an offering. The food would be taken home because the “gods” would only subsist on the spiritual essence of the offering.

Keep in mind, this was explained to me by my mother almost 30 years ago. She may have been mistaken in her assumptions. You will have to admit though that there is religious meaning in the practice of yoga.

    @ PaladinPhil:

This essay, while certainly not doctrine (and quite honestly just discovered by me), sort of sums up how modern Christian practitioners of Yoga have incorporated it into their faith. It must be noted that I simply meditate currently, and have not yet graduated to Yoga rituals. However the basic premise holds for both practices IMO.

Traditional yoga is not a religion but is a spiritual discipline. It is a practical tool for exploring the ultimate meaning of human existence and the nature of human happiness. There are different branches of yoga but the branch many of us practice is known as classical yoga or the 8 limbed path of yoga. All the branches of yoga impose a sound moral life as the foundation of the practice.

Classical yoga or the 8 limbed path grew from a codification of yogic core principles or sutras by Patanjali, a yogi who lived around 200 A.D. The first 2 limbs, which form the moral foundation of this practice, are the Yamas and Niyamas. Pantajali called them “various forms of absention from evil-doing (yama),” “observances (niyama),” and “basic rules of conduct.” He also stated they were to be “practiced without any reservations as to time, place, purpose, or caste rules”.
    —————————————
These yogic codes can strengthen our appreciation for the Christian teachings. Should it be surprising that truth converges? The experience of many in intercultural encounters is that when something of value is discovered in another philosophy or worldview or religion, it sends you back with fresh eyes and renewed appreciation for what is analogous to that in your own faith tradition which before you took for granted. Perhaps this brief exposition of the Yamas and Niyamas and their resonance with Christian moral teachings will occasion for you that kind of reappraisal.

  138. 138 | October 7, 2010 8:34 am

    @ Bumr50:

I have studied a lot of Eastern Mysticism (part of a truly thorough study of Eastern Martial Arts), and there is nothing incompatible about most of the practices. It is the intent of the practices that matters (and if you are Zen, there should be no intent). The religious foundations of Eastern philosophy are so different than those of Western thought that there is plenty of room for the two to, ahem, coexist.

It’s funny you should mention that. There’s an Orthodox church just a couple of blocks from me (it’s where I vote), and I’ve always been curious about it. I do know that they’re heavy into iconography, and have some similarities to the Roman church.

Well, I think that spiritualism and religious practice can be compatible, so long as there is no direct conflict. States of meditation can be achieved through a number of ways.

I’ve heard that John Paul II would spend hours face down on the marble floor of his chapel in deep prayer. I think that one could describe this as a meditative state.

Catholics (and Orthodox Christians) use iconography and ritual repetition to focus themselves into contemplative/meditative states.

I don’t necessarily see the two as mutually exclusive.
