The Rise of Anti-anti-Islamofascism

Remember when we went from anti-communism to anti anti-communism? Well the author makes the point that what we have now is anti anti-Islamism. Witness the fact that a reactionary, terror supporter named Yusuf Islam (fka Cat Stevens) who supported murdering Salman Rushdie and is a Hamas supporter who was put on a “no fly” list by the Bush administration,  was allowed to perform at Jon Stewart’s “Rally for Sanity” – there is nothing sane about Cat Stevens or any Islamist.  Sadly we have seen this all before. There were scores of pseudo intellectuals who throughout the Cold War or even during the Stalinist Terror of the 1930′s, claimed that the stories of Communist atrocities were outright lies or over blown – and that the real threat was capitalism and/or the United States. They formed “Peace Groups” which were for “peace” only if it assured a Soviet victory.

by Lee Smith

When Cat Stevens was introduced at Jon Stewart’s recent “Rally to Restore Sanity,” the musician also known by his Muslim name Yusuf Islam was greeted with warm applause and howls of approval. It was a strange reception coming from a culturally savvy, mostly twentysomething audience, for while Stevens’s songs are a staple in the 1970s schlock-folk canon, he is best known these days for having supported Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini’s 1989 fatwa demanding the execution of novelist Salman Rushdie.

Stevens has tried to whitewash his record over the years, without ever acknowledging or apologizing for his comments, including his response to a British interviewer’s question as to whether he would attend a demonstration to burn an effigy of the writer; Stevens answered glibly that he “hoped that it’d be the real thing.”

“I don’t know why no one in that crowd booed Stevens, or heckled him when he was introduced,” says the British author Nick Cohen, who was in contact with Rushdie after the rally. “Rushdie phoned Stewart, who said he was sorry if it upset him, but it was clear Stewart didn’t really care.”

Presumably what mattered to Stewart and the rally’s cosponsor Stephen Colbert was less Stevens’s willingness to join in the bloodlust of the Islamic Republic of Iran (the fatwa has been reaffirmed by Iran’s current supreme leader, Ali Khamenei) than the fact that Stevens/Islam had been put on a no-fly list by the Bush administration. Never mind that the folk singer had been identified as having donated to a Muslim charity with ties to Hamas; anyone considered unfriendly by Bush is an ally.

Stewart may be just a comedian, as he himself habitually justifies his excesses, but that gives even more reason for concern. It means the rehabilitation of a terrorist sympathizer has now hit the mainstream. What we’re seeing is something akin to the Cold War-era phenomenon of anti-anti-Communism. The anti-anti-Communist left, comprising large sections of the press, academy, and even federal bureaucracies, was simply incapable of understanding that the defense of American civil liberties did not depend on the uncritical defense of the rights of Communists. Call this latest manifestation of liberal illogic anti-anti-Islamism.

    Maybe when a mainstream entertainment figure has his head sawed off like Daniel Pearl will these dunces get a clue.

    And the thing fools like scat steven will never understand is no matter how much they kiss up to their masters, they will never be considered “real” islam and will be on the head chopping list with everyone else.

    I’m only on the first page but I COMPLETELY disagree with this:

    and while no one yet has been tapped to play the role of Joe McCarthy, former speaker of the House Newt Gingrich’s obsession with keeping sharia, or Islamic law, out of the United States may well do more harm than good. The pressing issue in America’s wars is not that American Muslims might want to get married or buried or pass on their estate according to Muslim traditions, but that we have real Islamist enemies like Iran trying to kill our soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan, and supporters of terrorism who live inside our borders and want to shoot us or blow things up.

    HELLLOOOO! Is THAT ever a mis-definition of the threat! Did you hear Homeland Security is going to ‘modify’ its airport ‘pat-down’ procedures to accomodate Muslims? Does this writer know what ‘dawa’ is?

    sheesh.

    In both cases it is more that they Hate America than that they love the respective totalitarian thugocracy that they are nominally supporting. If Adolf Hitler were to reappear, complete with Judenhass, swastikas, and White Supremacism intact, the Left would uncritically love him and his Thousand Year Reich so long as they were opposed to the United States of America.

    I was talking with a friend some weeks ago, and he pointed out that, had it not been for that nasty detail of antisemitism being one of the basic planks of Nazism, any number of Jewish Leftist intellectuals in Europe would have joined the Nazis in a nanosecond.

    From the last page:

    The Cold War lasted longer perhaps than it should have, thanks in part to those anti-anti-Communists—some out of malevolence and others out of intellectual confusion—whose language and ideas corrupted our political landscape. It is perhaps no coincidence that anti-anti-Islamism should appear during a presidential administration that has disdained to designate Islamism as an adversarial ideology. Many on the right, however, are still following the lead of the previous White House in referring to our conflicts as the “long war,” destined to last a generation or more. Perhaps one way to bring our wars to a speedier end is to be clear not only about our enemy but also the efforts of its sometimes unwitting apologists here at home.

    Everyone please stand back while my head fucking explodes.

    That was not intellectual confusion brought about by linguistic corruption.

    It was the complete absence of a moral compass.

    It IS a long war. It has been ongoing for CENTURIES. We’re just the most recent to the battlefield.

    Can I bitch-slap this person? Huh? Please?

    Scary, isn’t it? Had Hitler been more of a politician and less of a demagogue, he might very well have won World War Two. Even there, we were saved as much by the incompetance of our enemies as our own efforts. After all, we’d spent the intrawar period trying to demilitarize the United States. FDR spent money by the buckets, but he wasn’t building tanks and aircraft carriers with it. The Left never do in America. In Soviet Russia, of course, they spent money on precious little else.

    Well, as Kipling said of another land, in another context:

    Fenced by your careful fathers, ringed by your leaden seas,
    Long did ye wake in quiet and long lie down at ease;
    Till Ye said of Strife, “What is it?” of the Sword, “It is far from our ken”;
    Till ye made a sport of your shrunken hosts and a toy of your armed men.
    Ye stopped your ears to the warning—ye would neither look nor heed—
    Ye set your leisure before their toil and your lusts above their need.

    Kipling is writing about England’s military unpreparedness when the Boer War broke out. He speaks of how both the upper and lower classes turned away from military preparation or service, and that when the British thrust raw troops into battle against “a little people, few but apt in the field,” they stupidly believed that valor alone would serve when training and background were lacking.

    He excoriates people for turning away from the war and occupying themselves instead with “the flanneled fools at the wicket and the muddied oafs at the goals,” i.e., cricket and football, upper- and lower-class sports respectively, instead of bending energies to the war effort.

    Etc.

    We refuse to man up and do the hard job. We have tools at our disposal that no one in all of history has had. We could reduce the Mohammedan lands to smoking ruin in hours. Don’t want to use nukes? It’ll take weeks to do the same thing conventionally, but the B-2s and B-52s are up to the task in a way the B-17s and B-29s never could be. There is absolutely no military reason we can’t just kick their ass into next week, and ask the survivors if they have had enough. If they haven’t, rinse and repeat until the Mohammedans have had enough of war to do them for the next 1400 years.

    Or we run out of them. Either way, problem solved.

    @ eaglesoars:

    The final lines, I think, are particularly powerful:

    But ye say, “It will mar our comfort.” Ye say, “It will minish our trade.”
    Do ye wait for the spattered shrapnel ere ye learn how a gun is laid?
    For the low, red glare to southward when the raided coast-towns burn?
    (Light ye shall have on that lesson, but little time to learn.)
    Will ye pitch some white pavilion, and lustily even the odds,
    With nets and hoops and mallets, with rackets and bats and rod?
    Will the rabbit war with your foemen—the red deer horn them for hire?
    Your kept cock-pheasant keep you?—he is master of many a shire,
    Arid, aloof, incurious, unthinking, unthanking, gelt,
    Will ye loose your schools to flout them till their brow-beat columns melt?
    Will ye pray them or preach them, or print them, or ballot them back from your shore?
    Will your workmen issue a mandate to bid them strike no more?
    Will ye rise and dethrone your rulers? (Because ye were idle both?
    Pride by Insolence chastened? Indolence purged by Sloth?)
    No doubt but ye are the People; who shall make you afraid?
    Also your gods are many; no doubt but your gods shall aid.
    Idols of greasy altars built for the body’s ease;
    Proud little brazen Baals and talking fetishes;
    Teraphs of sept and party and wise wood-pavement gods—
    These shall come down to the battle and snatch you from under the rods?
    From the gusty, flickering gun-roll with viewless salvoes rent,
    And the pitted hail of the bullets that tell not whence they were sent.
    When ye are ringed as with iron, when ye are scourged as with whips,
    When the meat is yet in your belly, and the boast is yet on your lips;
    When ye go forth at morning and the noon beholds you broke,
    Ere ye lie down at even, your remnant, under the yoke?

    No doubt but ye are the People—absolute, strong, and wise;
    Whatever your heart has desired ye have not withheld from your eyes.
    On your own heads, in your own hands, the sin and the saving lies!

    In this, he points out the futility of game accoutrements—bats, hoops, rods—against armed invasion; that words will not suffice; that workmen bidding enemies to “strike no more” (pun, there) will not suffice; that you do not “wait for the spattered shrapnel ere you learn how a gun is laid,” and that if you do (he lapses into Biblical language here) you will be scourged as with whips and lie down, a remnant, under the yoke of your enemies.

    He closes with the exhortation that it is the people whose laziness and inattention have brought this situation about upon whom “the sin and the saving lies,” i.e., that those who have created the situation are also the only ones with the power to change it.

    Only to Muslims and apparently specifically to Muslim women. A fatwa has been issued saying they could not go thru the scanners and physical contact in a body search had to be limited to the neck and above. Alternatively, the woman can search herself, and her hands scanned for explosives.

    There’s poetry and…poetry. I wouldn’t give you a nickel for a lot of the modern stuff; some people think that “poetry” means “how can I make something sound highfalutin’ and obscure by using sentence fragments and obscure allusions?”

    Other people, and Kipling certainly was one, use poetry as a way of speaking. You may perhaps have noticed that I have a tendency to throw verses and song parodies around a lot; for some reason, I find the discipline of fitting something into a meter and rhyme scheme a way of organizing what I want to say, and having some fun while doing it.

    Poetry should be approached as a pleasure, despite, or perhaps because of, the efforts of pretentious fools to make it a fancy cultural preserve reserved for the elect, as they have with “art,” over the past several decades. Screw that. Poetry, the joy of language and the pleasure of rhyme and meter and the potential power of expression in verse, is the birthright of everyone.

    Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead

    Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
    Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.

    He was my North, my South, my East and West,
    My working week and my Sunday rest,
    My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
    I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.

    Jew hating conspiracies brought to you by the University of Toronto (from The National Post)

    The spread of anti-Semitism on Canadian university campuses is an alarming and obvious phenomenon. The University of Toronto is making a shocking contribution to the spread of hate. It is the birthplace of the odious so-called “Israel Apartheid Week” which has best been aptly described as, “the week in which the Western campus Hitlerjugend, Marxist-Leninists, and Islamo-fascists unite to demonstrate against and call for the destruction of the only Middle East country that is NOT an apartheid regime.”

    The Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE) is the home of some of the most appalling of The University of Toronto’s extremist radicals. It’s no coincidence that OISE, the home of suspect programs of dubious academic value like “Diversity Studies” is host to a number of anti-Israel lectures during the bigotfest of “Israeli Apartheid Week.”

    But to what extent has Jew hate permeated the academic programs at UofT? Judging by some of the theses that are being granted legitimacy, alarm bells should be going off and an investigation may be merited.
    Take a look at two theses being guided at OISE’s Department of Sociology and Equity Studies, like this Master’s Thesis from a Jenny Peto, one of the individuals behind the self-described “Queers Against Israeli Apartheid.”

    Her Master’s thesis is titled, “The Victimhood of the Powerful: White Jews, Zionism and the Racism of Hegemonic Holocaust Education.” She describes her thesis in the following terms:

    This paper focuses on issues of Jewish identity, whiteness and victimhood within hegemonic Holocaust education. I argue that today, Jewish people of European descent enjoy white privilege and are among the most socio-economically advantaged groups in the West. Despite this privilege, the organized Jewish community makes claims about Jewish victimhood that are widely accepted within that community and within popular discourse in the West. I propose that these claims to victimhood are no longer based in a reality of oppression, but continue to be propagated because a victimized Jewish identity can produce certain effects that are beneficial to the organized Jewish community and the Israeli nation-state. I focus on two related Holocaust education projects – the March of the Living and the March of Remembrance and Hope – to show how Jewish victimhood is instrumentalized in ways that obscure Jewish privilege, deny Jewish racism and promote the interests of the Israeli nation-state.

    Why is Ms. Peto, who ostensibly is concerned about “Jewish racism,” discounting the many Jews, both Israeli and not, who are not “white” but are of varied backgrounds other than European but are also part of the “organized Jewish community”? Does she think they don’t count, just because they aren’t “white”?

    Let’s take a closer look at part of her thesis:

    “Jewish people of European descent enjoy white privilege and are among the most socio-economically advantaged groups in the West. Despite this privilege, the organized Jewish community makes claims about Jewish victimhood”

    In other words, the rich Jews who control the world are pretending to be victims. If Ms. Peto were a little more insightful, she might realize that the “organized Jewish community” is ensuring that the dangers of anti-Semitism are not ignored, which is somewhat different from claiming “victimhood.” The fact that anti-Semitic crimes are by far the greatest type of hate crime around and are on the increase doesn’t seem to have permeated Ms. Peto’s obviously limited grasp of things. In the United States, anti-Jewish crimes occur tens times as often anti-Muslim crimes. And those statistics aren’t from B’nai Brith, but the FBI.

    We are looking at a global catastrophe that will kill billions – and if the seas cross an oxygen tipping point, all of us.

    When I say that billions will die this is not an hyperbole. The cold scientific facts are that our civilization is on a precipice. We can act to prevent our collapse or we can plunge into ruin.

    @ buzzsawmonkey:

    Here’s my favorite Pope piece (it’s long).

    Eloisa to Abelard

    Pope writes with the voice of Eloisa to Abelard after she has been confined to a convent for years and he has been living as a castrated priest/professor.

    Canst thou forget that sad, that solemn day,
    When victims at yon altar’s foot we lay?
    Canst thou forget what tears that moment fell,
    When, warm in youth, I bade the world farewell?
    As with cold lips I kiss’d the sacred veil,
    The shrines all trembl’d, and the lamps grew pale:
    Heav’n scarce believ’d the conquest it survey’d,
    And saints with wonder heard the vows I made.
    Yet then, to those dread altars as I drew,
    Not on the Cross my eyes were fix’d, but you:
    Not grace, or zeal, love only was my call,
    And if I lose thy love, I lose my all.
    Come! with thy looks, thy words, relieve my woe;
    Those still at least are left thee to bestow.
    Still on that breast enamour’d let me lie,
    Still drink delicious poison from thy eye,
    Pant on thy lip, and to thy heart be press’d;
    Give all thou canst—and let me dream the rest.
    Ah no! instruct me other joys to prize,
    With other beauties charm my partial eyes,
    Full in my view set all the bright abode,
    And make my soul quit Abelard for God.

    Anoxia is currently a problem, and doesn’t correlate with SST anomalies. That’s one reason why we have too many jellyfish and not enough bony fish. The jellys don’t need as much O2. But I was under the impression that it relates to overfishing, which is a problem in a lot of locations.

    Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
    Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
    Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
    Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
    Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
    Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
    He was my North, my South, my East and West,
    My working week and my Sunday rest,
    My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
    I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.
    The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
    Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
    Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
    For nothing now can ever come to any good.
    The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
    Wow.

    That’s how I felt when the Serbs were being bombed.

    I never got over it, and never will.

    And I’ve never even been to Serbia. Go figure.

    @ refugee000:

    A friend of mine said; “what it lacks in stopping power, it makes up in cuteness”

    I suppose it could work…while your opponent is laughing at you, you’ll get a chance to shoot first… :)

    In the beginning Samuel Colt created the revolver and he saw that it was good, but then he invented the model 1911A and it is without peer…
    The 1911 is a Browning design, manufactured by Colt.

    See, the prophets agree….
