Computer virus set back Iran’s nuclear program by two years

There are ways of hampering Iran’s quest for nukes besides the ludicrous idea that the IAF can pull off an air strike (which can never happen) on all the Iranian nuclear facilities in one fell swoop.  Technology used to destroy other technology sounds like a great way to go.

by Yaakov Katz

The Stuxnet virus, which has attacked Iran’s nuclear facilities and which Israel is suspected of creating, has set back the Islamic Republic’s nuclear program by two years, a top German computer consultant who was one of the first experts to analyze the program’s code told The Jerusalem Post on Tuesday.

“It will take two years for Iran to get back on track,” Langer said in a telephone interview from his office in Hamburg, Germany. “This was nearly as effective as a military strike, but even better since there are no fatalities and no full-blown war. From a military perspective, this was a huge success.”

Langer spoke to the Post amid news reports that the virus was still infecting Iran’s computer systems at its main uranium enrichment facility at Natanz and its reactor at Bushehr.

Last month, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the United Nation’s nuclear watchdog, said that Iran had suspended work at its nuclear-field production facilities, likely a result of the Stuxnet virus.

According to Langer, Iran’s best move would be to throw out all of the computers that have been infected by the worm, which he said was the most “advanced and aggressive malware in history.” But, he said, even once all of the computers were thrown out, Iran would have to ensure that computers used by outside contractors were also clean of Stuxnet.

“It is extremely difficult to clean up installations from Stuxnet, and we know that Iran is no good in IT [information technology] security, and they are just beginning to learn what this all means,” he said. “Just to get their systems running again they have to get rid of the virus, and this will take time, and then they need to replace the equipment, and they have to rebuild the centrifuges at Natanz and possibly buy a new turbine for Bushehr.”

Widespread speculation has named Israel’s Military Intelligence Unit 8200, known for its advanced Signal Intelligence (SIGINT) capabilities, as the possible creator of the software, as well as the United States.

Langer said that in his opinion at least two countries – possibly Israel and the United States – were behind Stuxnet.

Israel has traditionally declined comment on its suspected involvement in the Stuxnet virus, but senior IDF officers recently confirmed that Iran had encountered significant technological difficulties with its centrifuges at the Natanz enrichment facility.

“We can say that it must have taken several years to develop, and we arrived at this conclusion through code analysis, since the code on the control systems is 15,000 lines of code, and this is a huge amount,” Langer said.

“This piece of evidence led us to conclude that this is not by a hacker,” he continued. “It had to be a country, and we can also conclude that even one nation-state would not have been able to do this on its own.”

Eric Byres, a computer security expert who runs a website called Tofino Security, which provides solutions for industrial companies with Stuxnet-related problems, told the Post on Tuesday that the number of Iranians visiting his site had jumped tremendously in recent weeks – a likely indication that the virus is still causing great disarray at Iranian nuclear facilities.

Sheikh al-Husseini with Nazi officials. Sheikh al-Husseini with Nazi officials

by Jennifer Lipman

The Nazis told the leader of the Palestinian Arabs that in return for his help during the Second World War he would have control of Palestine.

According to a report released this week by the US National Archives, based on thousands of declassified documents, the Nazis planned to make the Grand Mufti of Jerusalem, Haj Amin al-Husseini, overall leader after the British were ousted and the 350,000-strong Jewish population was murdered.

In return for “liberating” Palestine, the report reveals that the Germans paid Sheikh al-Husseini “an absolute fortune” of 50,000 marks a month and tasked him with recruiting Muslims to the SS.

It is well-known that Sheikh al-Husseini worked with the Nazis, but after the war he claimed this was because he wanted to avoid being arrested by the British authorities.

“The documents confirm that while Nazi Germany was exterminating the Jewish people across Europe, an alliance was forged with certain Arab leaders to go after Jews in the British Mandate of Palestine.”

Mr Harris added: “The depth and intimacy of the relationship between Nazi Germany and the main Palestinian leader of the time…is particularly appalling.

That’s Langner’s speculation. We really don’t know how much damage was done.

That tells me something. If it were just an ordinary OS-infecting worm, cleaning or replacing the hard drives would be enough. This implies that this beast burrows itself in the BIOS. IOW, the motherboards are toast.

This is some hard core stuff.

The real problem that Iran has is that for these auxiliary systems such as the PLC controls, they’re totally dependent on outside suppliers. This is how they ended up with what appears to be a fairly generic industrial control configuration for their centrifuges, and while they’re resistant to attack, they’re not impervious.

Now they’re going to have to make some decisions. Do they try to clean and secure their Siemens stuff, or start all over? If they start all over, then who? Can the Israelis get into any other PLC?

The short answer is yes. Nothing can’t be cracked by people of this caliber. There are some things that they can do to make it harder, but I’m not going to give them any help.

In all likelihood, they’re going to be battling this digital clap for a long time.

I’m sure of that. I just don’t know how much, and whether this “2 years” thing is based on just what he thinks the damage to the computer network is, or whether he has any information on the controls and equipment. I strongly suspect not. Which means that it may have actually set them back even further.

The only way for Israel to defeat Hizballah to fight an all out gloves off war. If they fight limited, it will do nothing. Hizballah isn’t invinsible, its a question is Israel will have the stomach for the type of fighting that will be required.

Israel can’t defeat Hezbollah: Israeli expert

JERUSALEM (Reuters) – Israel cannot defeat Hezbollah in a direct engagement and the Lebanese guerrilla group would inflict heavy damage on the Israeli home front if war broke out, a former Israeli national security adviser said Thursday.

Though outnumbered and outgunned, Hezbollah held off Israel’s advanced armed forces in a 2006 war and fired more than 4,000 rockets into Israeli territory. The group has a domestic political base and has since bolstered an arsenal that Israel describes as a strategic threat.

Tensions between Israel and Hezbollah’s Iranian and Syrian backers have stoked expectations of renewed violence in Lebanon.

“Israel does not know how to beat Hezbollah,” said Giora Eiland, an army ex-general who served as national security adviser to former prime ministers Ariel Sharon and Ehud Olmert.

In the event of a nuclear attack, please stay put

The advice is based on recent scientific analyses showing that a nuclear attack is much more survivable if you immediately shield yourself from the lethal radiation that follows a blast, a simple tactic seen as saving hundreds of thousands of lives. Even staying in a car, the studies show, would reduce casualties by more than 50 percent; hunkering down in a basement would be better by far…

The new wave is citizen preparedness. For people who survive the initial blast, the main advice is to fight the impulse to run and instead seek shelter from lethal radioactivity. Even a few hours of protection, officials say, can greatly increase survival rates.

Administration officials argue that the cold war created an unrealistic sense of fatalism about a terrorist nuclear attack. “It’s more survivable than most people think,” said an official deeply involved in the planning, who spoke on the condition of anonymity. “The key is avoiding nuclear fallout.”

Kind of put’s the whole TSA fondling everyone’s junk in a new light doesn’t it…

Fewer jobless claims cap strong week for economy

WASHINGTON – A further decline in the number of people applying for unemployment benefits capped a strong week for the economy.

Factories are producing more, shoppers are spending more and business executives and consumers are more optimistic. The latest reports, along with a tax-cut plan that Congress is set to pass, are leading economists to predict 2011 will be better than first thought and that hiring will pick up.

Weekly claims for jobless aid dipped by 3,000 to a seasonally adjusted 420,000 in the week ending Dec. 11, the Labor Department said Thursday.

Obama’s recent statement, echoing Pelosi’s earlier statement, that extended unemployment payments act as a “stimulus to the economy,” coupled with the Democrats’ insistence on not extending the current tax structure for “the rich” is extremely disturbing.

These statements view “economic stimulus” solely in terms of people spending the money in their pockets at the present moment, not in terms of saving or investment. Either they fail to realize that when “the rich” have more money in hand that money is invested, which is the true source of genuine economic stimulus, or they are trying desperately to prevent such stimulus by making investment less likely.

In the meantime, the sort of faux-stimulus produced by people spending the bankroll in their pockets is the essence of that old, monumentally non-PC term “n*gger rich,” which referred to having a big bankroll in the pocket for the moment and nothing else. It is extremely unsettling to see the President and his most trusted allies view the task of economic recovery in terms that correspond to the most racist stereotype of someone who snagged a big roll at a crap game.

    Why Governor Palin Resigned

    By Stacy Drake

It is not a stretch to say that Governor Palin receives a bitter reception from some of her fellow republicans. The reasons for that vary depending on exactly who is dishing out the denunciation. Many of them however, use the same line of attack against her. One after the other, they cite her resignation as the source of their disdain.

Some of the latest examples were posted Monday on “Taegan Goddard’s Political Wire,” in a piece called “More Republicans Come Out Against Palin.” He notes that Senator Kit Bond (R-MO) and former New Jersey Governor Christine Todd Whitman (Super-RINO) have both recently voiced concern about Governor Palin. It says:

Several more prominent Republicans have questioned Sarah Palin’s qualifications for president because she quit in the middle of her term as Alaska governor.

Sen. Kit Bond (R-MO) told the Kansas City Star, “I have reservations about anyone who quits as governor halfway through the term.”

Former New Jersey Gov. Christine Todd Whitman (R) told CNN that, “I mean, she was a governor. But the fact that she left office before even completing her first term is — that’s just not an attitude that I think is necessarily in the best interest of you.

On Tuesday, Real Clear Politics posted a story titled, “GOP Hopefuls Speak No Ill of Palin – for Now” which stated the intention of republicans to use Governor Palin’s resignation against her. They write:

But perhaps the most salient line of attack that her potential GOP rivals might use against her is criticism of her decision to resign with a year and a half left in her first term as governor.

Despite their almost universal praise for Palin’s ability to energize the party, there have already been several instances in which Republican White House hopefuls have drawn attention to her early resignation.

Using the resignation as a means to attack Governor Palin, republican political opponents, just as many leftists and media types before them, have distorted her record by pushing a narrative they wish to pursue. As the governor stated in her book, Going Rogue:

“The sin of omission glares in their reporting.”

The same goes for politicians dictating their message through reporters. What they are omitting from the discourse is why Governor Palin left office in the first place. This has polluted the perception many in the general public have towards Governor Palin.

To understand why Governor Palin resigned from office is to understand the environment she found herself in after returning to Alaska following the 2008 Presidential campaign. For a more complete understanding of this environment, I suggest reading all of chapter five in Going Rogue, called “The Thumpin.” For now, here is an overview of that chapter that I hope will give readers a better understanding of the conditions that lead to her decision.

Governor Palin writes that when she flew home from the campaign in 2008, the “political landscape” in Alaska “had permanently changed.” She states:

The fallout was immediate: the governor’s office was inundated with frivolous ethics complaints. Literally scores of Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) and Public Records Act requests rolled in, generating thousands of pages that required hours of work to process. Reporters abandoned actual reporting in favor of tabloidizing my family, my record, and me.

Governor Palin writes about the fact that her administration had received a normal amount of FOIA requests prior to her selection on the 2008 GOP ticket. But after the campaign, her office was hit with a “tidal wave” of FOIA requests and “hundreds of demands” for various communication transactions, such as emails. She wrote:

Only the opposition really comprehends the work involved with FOIA requests-from the retrieval of all correspondence and emails, to copying them for lawyers and staff to review in order to remove confidential or privileged information, to assembling and packing them, and on and on. Just one of these requests for a certain batch of e-mails generated 24,000 individual sheets of paper. So instead of doing our jobs, my staff, including attorneys, spent thousands of hours and wasted more than $2 million of public monies to sort through it all one sheet at a time.

What these political operatives did was to twist the ethics reform measures that she had fought for, into a “weapon” to use against her. Governor Palin described the people who where behind these tactics as “relentless and shameless,” which they were. She mentions the time when Linda Kellen Biegel (aka Celtic Diva), filed an ethics charge against her for wearing a jacket with the logo of her husband’s Iron Dog sponsor on it. She adds:

I was charged with accepting “bribes” of chocolates and a kids’ hockey stick when I gave a speech at a charity event in Indiana. I was charged with holding a fish in a photo for a state fishing pamphlet. I was served with a complaint filed under the name of a fake British soap opera character. I was charged with conducting an interview with a national media figure in my state office. I was charged with answering reporters’ questions in the lobby of my state office the day I returned to work and found a herd of reporters congregated near the doorway to my office. As I tried to make my way through, I stopped to answer questions-and got slapped with an ethics accusation.

I understand this argument, and I am even somewhat sympathetic to the Governor’s reasons. It does however leave me with a few questions. First, did Gov. Palin make it better by leaving? Those people who filed the FOI and baloney ethics complaints learned that this is the way to defeat the Conservatives, that we have limited will to defend ourselves. Next, would it be any easier for a President Palin? If she believes that the silliness would be less on a national scale, she is sorely mistaken. Personally, I believe Sarah Palin is smart, energetic, courageous, and capable, but I do believe that resigning as Alaska’s Governor was the exact wrong thing to do. I wish she had stayed to fight this nonsense. Not fighting the leftists at every turn is what gets Republicans in the most trouble.

LGF psychology is weird. Normal people reading or contributing to the blog should consider whether or not their mental health is better elsewhere. Emulating Charles in any way is a recipe for failure. He doesn’t like you or your friends.

The cult analogy seems very accurate. I only go to LGF anymore to bait people. And to bait people I have to feel mean. I seem to think I am doing them a favor though. DON’T DRINK THAT KOOLAID!!!!!

One has to wonder what Charles thinks of himself. How does he rationalize his anti social behaviors? I think he must be afraid of a lot of people and sits around his computer complaining how fucked up everyone is when it is actually himself. Without his blog he would be a classic troll.

No, Alaska changed the laws as soon as Gov. Palin resigned so that what was done to her could never be repeated. No other state in the union had those laws requiring the Governor to pay all legal fee’s for any lawsuit brought against them.

Sarah’s legal fee’s exceeded 2 million dollars out of her own pocket and were consuming 3 days a week of her entire staff’s time to comply with the discovery requirements. The democrat bastards that did that had effectively shut down the governor’s office. Shut down the Governor’s office like that and you effectively shut down the entire state. As I said before Alaska’s state senate changed those laws so that this tactic can never be used again.

No this bullshit will not be repeated on a national scale, it was entirely unique to Alaska, all other states including the federal government indemnify sitting officials from having to personally bare the cost of litigation against them.
