That’s right, Blogmockers. Tomorrow is International Weigh Your Lemur Day, so get out your graph paper and tally sheets, line ‘em up and set ‘em down. If you use a digital scale be sure to cover it properly so that the inevitable little lemur leaks don’t damage the expensive electronics.

I can’t remember how many (supposedly) waterproof scales I’ve had to return over the years. It always ends in an argument with the salesperson, right up until I drop the bombshell:

“Look. This scale can’t even sustain a bladder full of lemur piss. I’ll show you. Wait here for a minute.”

Now, I don’t own a lemur, nor do I have a bladder of lemur piss to produce at a moment’s notice, but you’d be surprised at how fast you can get a damaged waterproof scale replaced with that simple browbeating argument.

And speaking of digital scales damaged by lemur piss, it’s time for The Overnight Open Thread.

I suppose you could just sink ‘em in a full vat of water, measure the quantity of runoff, determine the volume, and estimate the density. I’d rather just plop ‘em down on a scale and be done with it for the year.

Lemurs don’t ordinarily sit/stand still enough for them to be weighed.

If you cover a scale with something, you have to compensate for that by adding the cover weight to the tare weight.

    sure was.

the only problem with berlin was that if a land war in europe broke out, the city would have been hit with non-persistent chemical warfare agents and left for dead by the soviets and east germans.

the us army had no plans to ‘rescue us’ as we were very far in east germany. we were to die in place. that makes both the average berliner and the soldier ‘live’ every day.

GOP Rep. Steve King Says Every Appropriations Bill That Passes House Must Include Language Prohibiting Any Funding For ObamaCare…

Rep. Steve King (R.-Iowa) says that House Republicans should include language that prohibits any funding for implementation of Obamacare in literally every appropriations bill that passes the House of Representatives this year, thus forcing a showdown on the issue with the Democratic majority Senate and President Barack Obama.

“Somebody’s going to blink,” King told CNSNews.com. “It’ll be President Obama or it’ll be House Republicans.

“If House Republicans refuse to blink, we will succeed,” said King in videotaped interview. “ObamaCare will never become the effective law of the land and we’ll be able to leave a legacy of liberty for the future generations.”

    Holy Crrrrraaaaaapppppp!
    now this is bad ASS!

The ultimate death stare: New RAF helmet allows pilots to shoot down enemy jets by looking at them

All a pilot has to do is glance at an enemy aircraft and then steer a missile towards it with his, or her, mind.
Targets pop-up in the pilot’s visor, at which point he can select by voice command and fire.
As long as the enemy’s aircraft is in sight – whether that be below, above or to either side – a missile can be directed towards it.
The breakthrough brings to an end the century-old concept of the aerial dogfight, in which one plane must be directly behind another in order to hit it with firepower.

The innovative two-part helmet design has been co-developed with aircrew and logistic support engineering participation.
It works by using tiny optical sensors

‘It means the end of the dogfight,’ leading pilot Mark Bowman told The Sun.
‘Traditionally you have to get behind an aircraft to lock on. With this, I steer the weapons with my head.’

The helmet has been developed by Britain’s BAE Systems and has been subjected to extensive flight trials in RAF Typhoon planes.
A spokesperson for BAE said: ‘An advanced optical head tracker is integrated into the helmet system to provide a high accuracy/low latency solution for low, medium, and high altitude operations.
‘While the system has been designed for the Eurofighter Typhoon, its modular design can be applied to all platforms, both rotary and fixed wing.’

The trick is to call it while it’s still in the air. If you’re off by a few grams when you’ve got them on the scale, just squeeze ‘em quickly, and they’ll leak onto the electronics. I know it’s cheating, but it works, and no one wants to see the stunt again.

I didn’t intend to suggest it doesn’t happen anymore.

I was speaking about the article suggesting this new helmet puts an end to old style dogfighting, as if old style dogfighting is still the norm when it’s not. So this helmet isn’t going to change anything with regard to that. All I was saying is that most but not all aerial combat takes place beyond visual range (20 miles) and has for quite sometime.

Of course if the enemy is too close missiles are out or if you are out of missiles than guns are in. That is why we still teach the basics Manfred von Richthofen came up with.

I don’t really buy into the line of thinking that says the ‘current war is replay of the last one’, but the collapse of western will in Vietnam was duly noted by the Soviets.

And U.S. fighter pilots had become enamored with air to air missiles, which while great, are useless for the most part in dogfights. And that was why Top Gun for Navy and Marine pilots/RIO’s and Rd Flag for USAF pilots was formed.

it was, thank the dems in congress for that.

the firing of patco scared the hell of the soviets…yet, i dont think they thought we had the will to mess with them on their own damn border in afghanistan tho.

i know the toll that war took, my wife’s family has former soldiers that need help.

dien bein phu was a failure on the part of the french, and a failure on our part. while we were weary of war, some more aid than just what we did would have gone a long way.

    @ coldwarrior:

Yeah, but it was an auto-pull for malware content, not a manual pull for commentary or anything like that. I don’t know how life is here, but I kill 60-100 spammer applications a day, every day, at GCP, and I am not the only admin doing so. I suspect one snuck in and posted the malware links, but then again, any member might have innocently posted a link to a malware site as well. Wondering if there is some automatic way to prevent that in the future…

I will pass that one on to the admins that actually know their ass from a hole in the ground about this stuff (which leaves me out.) We may just need a new hosting service. Or not.

Good Morning, Blogmocracy! Today is another Glorious day in the reign of Emperor Barack Hussein I, Pasha of the United States and Defender of the Faith Ummah! Today our glorious Emperor returns from his much deserved vacation to Paradise (minus his 72 Virgins)! Whilst the rest of the country was buried under inches to feet of Global Warming®, our Dear Leader was untroubled by the shit, Praise Allah (SWAT)! HE returns to find Capital Hill infested with Republicans, a dire circumstance indeed. Time will tell if these Republicans intend to cut off the Goody Train™ with which the Democrats have purchased many a vote, or whether the Goody Train™ is still in business under new management.

What about a nice Scottish or Irish brogue? That get’s me going. As to American accents, I love southern as well; very aweet and welcoming. My wife is from “Nawlins” and their accents are very peculiar – like a cross between deep south and Brooklyn…she pronounces “school” as “skoo” :D

Saudi Arabia ‘nabbed Israeli-tagged vulture for being Mossad spy’
Vulture used as part of bird migration research was reportedly captured in rural area of Saudi Arabia.

A vulture tagged by scientists at Tel Aviv University has strayed into Saudi Arabian territory, where it was promptly arrested on suspicion of being a Mossad spy, Israeli and Saudi media reported Tuesday.

local reporters told Saudi Arabia’s Al-Weeam newspaper that the matter seemed to be a “Zionist plot.”
