One of the great things about international football tournaments (that’s soccer to you deniers) are the lengths that some fans go to get photos posted on the internet:

A fan cheers during the Club World Cup semi-final soccer match between Brazil’s Internacional and DR Congo’s TP Mazembe at Mohammed Bin Zayed Stadium in Abu Dhabi December 14, 2010.

Right. Nothing like putting the threaded axle of a bicycle wheel on your noggin, giving it a spin, and enjoying some self-trepanation while watching a soccer match.  Of course, the bigger payoff is getting your picture posted a month later on The Overnight Open Thread.

Comments and respectful debate are both welcome and encouraged.

Comments are the sole opinion of the comment writer, just as each thread posted is the sole opinion or post idea of the administrator that posted it or of the readers that have written guest posts for the Blogmocracy.

Obscene, abusive, or annoying remarks may be deleted or moved to spam for admin review, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their content by any other commenter or the admins of this Blogmocracy.

We're not easily offended and don't want people to think they have to walk on eggshells around here (like at another place that shall remain nameless) but of course, there is a limit to everything.

Play nice!

The sheer devastation of the Queensland flood disaster will on Sunday be visible to anyone with a computer following a flyover of affected areas yesterday by Australian online mapping company Nearmap.

Nearmap CEO Simon Crowther said the images, taken with high resolution cameras attached to two Cessna planes, would be five times as detailed as those seen on Google Maps. Anyone around the world would be able to access them from nearmap.com on Sunday.

    And the searching continues:

A victim found 80 kilometres away from where the person went missing in the Lockyer Valley demonstrates the massive search and rescue task ahead, authorities say.

And Queensland’s police chief warned today that it was possible some of the victims might never be found.

Fifteen people have been found dead, many of them in the Lockyer Valley, which was decimated by a wall of water that rushed through it this week.

    Advertisement: Story continues below
    Fifty-one remain missing.

Emergency Services Minister Neil Roberts said the force of the water had carried victims a long way away.

“One of the people who are confirmed deceased was found 80 kilometres downstream from where they were reported missing,” he told reporters today.

“I think this just demonstrates and highlights the complexity of these search and rescue operations and also the time that’s going to be consumed searching all of the creeks and streams associated with this river system.”

it appears that, like in the UK, the govt bought into the prevailing weather/global warming tripe and forgot all about the cyclic nature of the climate and ignored the flood potential.

But “Memory Vault” particularly condemns a second individual, Tim Flannery, a professor of earth and life sciences at Macquarie University, chair of the Copenhagen Climate Council, and the 2007 Australian of the Year. It is he, above all, he has managed to convince the state government that the predicable cycle of droughts and floods will no longer happen, and that the state, instead of beefing up defences from the last major event 30 years ago in 1974, should prepare for long-term water shortages.

there will be a post about this later

    jokes for us married guys
    (some good, some bad)

    1. Two times a week, we go to a nice restaurant, have a little beverage, then comes good food and companionship. She goes on Tuesdays, I go on Fridays.

    2. We also sleep in separate beds. Hers is in Ontario and mine is in Tucson .

    3. I take my wife everywhere, but she keeps finding her way back.

    4. I asked my wife where she wanted to go for our anniversary. “Somewhere I haven’t been in a long time!” she said. So I suggested the kitchen.

    5. We always hold hands. If I let go, she shops.

    6. She has an electric blender, electric toaster and electric bread maker. Then she said “There are too many gadgets and no place to sit down!” So I bought her an electric chair.

    7. My wife told me the car wasn’t running well because there was water in the carburetor. I asked where the car was, she told me “In the Lake.”

    8. She got a mudpack and looked great for two days. Then the mud fell off.

    9. She ran after the garbage truck, yelling “Am I too late for the garbage?” The driver said “No, jump in!”

    10. Remember. Marriage is the number one cause of divorce.

    11. I married Miss Right. I just didn’t know her first name was Always.

    12. I haven’t spoken to my wife in 18 months. I don’t like to interrupt her.

    13. The last fight was my fault. My wife asked “What’s on the TV?” I said “Dust!”

    TFK posted a vid of a very little girl singing the National Anthem for her dad in Iraq (if memory serves);
Girl starts singing. Feels bug on foot. Looks at bug. Squishes bug.(does not stop singing) Starts to forget. Remembers and concentrates ’cause it is for DAD.(does not stop singing) Gets tired. Sits down. (does not stop singing) … Finishes song.

Hard to see that without a little mist forming on your face. I kept it until my PC crashed.

    Heh ™

HAMMAMET, Tunisia — This ancient Mediterranean hamlet, advertised as the Tunisian St.-Tropez, has long been the favorite summer getaway of President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali and his large extended family, many of whom have built vast beachfront mansions here with the wealth they have amassed during his years in power.

But their new and conspicuous riches, partly exposed in a detailed cable by the American ambassador and made public by WikiLeaks, have fueled an extraordinary extended uprising by Tunisians who blame corruption among the elite for the joblessness afflicting their country.

And on Thursday, idyllic Hammamet became the latest casualty of that rage, as hundreds of protesters swarmed the streets, the police fled and rioters gleefully ransacked the mansion of a presidential relative, liberating a horse from its stable and setting aflame a pair of all-terrain vehicles.

these wiki leaks thus far haven’t been as bad as i thought they would be…the forces of good and conservatism seem to be proven right, over and over again.

If there was EVER a reason to stay out of flood waters…

The Queensland Times reported the shark sightings, 30km from the coast at Goodna, with Ipswich local councillor Paul Tully confirming it was a bizarre but true story out of Queensland’s flood disaster.

“It would have swum several km in from the river, across Evan Marginson Park and the motorway,” Cr Tully said.

“It’s definitely a first for Goodna, to have a shark in the main street.

“I know Steve (Bateman) and he wouldn’t say he saw a shark unless he really saw one.

The local MP Jo-Ann Miller also said she believed Mr Bateman’s sighting was genuine.

“Steve wouldn’t lie about something like that. He’s very well known in the community,” she told The Queensland Times.

Bull sharks are the third most likely shark to attack a human being. They are noted for their aggressive behaviour and often swim in shallow waters along coasts and rivers.

Bull sharks are among the most unpredictable and aggressive sharks, and are among the most likely to attack humans.

They can tolerate fresh water and have been known travel long distances along rivers.

Oh wait! It was Nair! Remember the commercial, if you’re old enough- “Who wears short shorts? We wear short shorts! If you dare wear short shorts Nair’s for short shorts.” It was a spray-on hair remover.

Good Morning, Blogmocracy! Today is another glorious day in the reign of our Emperor, Barack Hussein I, Pasha of the United States and Defender of the Faithy Ummah! Today, it begins! We are finally going to start the debate on the repeal of ObamaCare. The begining of the end of the nightmare? Possibly. I expect it to pass the House, probably with something of a bipartisan majority. The Senate is, of course, a different hurdle. But that is the Plan™ for the next two years: repeal and repeal, and repeal. Force the Democrats to reconfirm their committment to Socialized Medicine through multiple votes over the course of years, all the while educating the voting populace on the pernicious evil of this power-grab. Obama began his 2012 Campaign this week with a new slogan “Together We Thrivce!” Well, there is precious little thriving going on outside of Government Employment in today’s Obama Economy. ObnamaCare is one reason why this is. Obama’s unprecedented looting of the Treasury is another. We need to drive this home to the unemployed and underemployed in their millions, and to everyone who knows them in their tens of millions. Government has grown richer and more pervasive while the rest of us face unemployment or, at best, stagnant wages in a depressed job market where we are simply grateful to have the job we have. This is Obama’;s Legacy, the Great Depression II, and we need to make that clear over the next two difficult years.

    This is funny.

Rep. James Clyburn (D-SC) has been an outspoken critic of the use of so-called violent or vitriolic political rhetoric. Specifically, he has bemoaned references to targeting candidates or any type of reference to guns.

On MSNBC this afternoon he said President Obama had to put on a “double barrel” effort at last night’s memorial service in Arizona

  166. 166 | January 14, 2011 7:47 am

    @ vagabond trader:

She is taking her lead from Gibbs, who called the shootings an accident earlier in the week. That is patently offensive. Do they mean to suggest that this motherfucker should only be charged with Involuntary Manslaughter rather than murder? That is how you handle an accident with a firearm. Between their insistance that it was an accident and Obummer’sfuckup at the funeral, they are going to give this nut’s defense attourney’s enough ammunition to keep this in court the rest of his natural life. That is gross incompetance at the highest levels of our government, but, then, gross incompetance is what we are used to from Obama-Pelosie-Reid. No use in expecting them to change just because they lost an election…

So just got off the phone with my daughter in Israel. She is there for 10 days with a group. Sometimes the kid moves in a fog. She told me she used her credit card to get a soda out of a vending machine? I mean I guess that’s OK. just not what I would do. Then she tells me where they went after they landed and I said “so you went up the coast road?” and she tells me “I don’t know I was asleep”. She’s been there before with me, but if I as I remember she slept thru those trips also. Kids!
