The Washington Post: “Abbas proves he prefers posturing to a peace process”

by Eliana ( 157 Comments › )
Filed under Barack Obama, Israel, Muslim Brotherhood, Palestinians at February 22nd, 2011 - 6:30 pm

In May of 2009, The Washington Post’s Jackson Diehl wrote a scathing assessment of Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas and his disingenuous approach to the peace process called Abbas’s Waiting Game:

Abbas and his team fully expect that Netanyahu will never agree to the full settlement freeze — if he did, his center-right coalition would almost certainly collapse. So they plan to sit back and watch while U.S. pressure slowly squeezes the Israeli prime minister from office. “It will take a couple of years,” one official breezily predicted. Abbas rejects the notion that he should make any comparable concession — such as recognizing Israel as a Jewish state, which would imply renunciation of any large-scale resettlement of refugees.

Instead, he says, he will remain passive. “I will wait for Hamas to accept international commitments. I will wait for Israel to freeze settlements,” he said. “Until then, in the West Bank we have a good reality . . . the people are living a normal life.” In the Obama administration, so far, it’s easy being Palestinian.

On Friday (February 18th), the Washington Post published an unsigned editorial with another scathing assessment of Mahmoud Abbas called “Abbas proves he prefers posturing to a peace process”:

PALESTINIAN PRESIDENT Mahmoud Abbas claims to be interested in negotiating a two-state peace settlement with Israel. For two years he has enjoyed the support of a U.S. president more sympathetic to the Palestinian cause than most, if not all, of his predecessors. Yet Mr. Abbas has mostly refused to participate in the direct peace talks that Barack Obama made one of his top foreign policy priorities – and now he has shown himself to be bent on embarrassing and antagonizing the U.S. administration.

Mahmoud Abbas has treated Barack Obama worse than the “Palestinians” have treated any U.S. President except for Bill Clinton who was also embarrassed by the outcome of the peace talks he tried to push through in late 2000.

Barack Obama didn’t learn anything from Bill Clinton’s experience and neither did Bill Clinton, judging by his insistence this past year that a peace deal like the failed offer in 2000 could still be the answer to the Arab-Israeli conflict.

The “Palestinians” are once again doing what would clearly be counter-productive for people who actually want a state.

Mr. Abbas’s stubbornness might seem spectacularly self-defeating – but only if one assumes that he is genuinely interested in a peace deal. In fact, the U.N. gambit allows him to posture as a champion of the Palestinian cause without having to consider any of the hard choices that would be needed to found a Palestinian state. It enables him to deflect criticism from the rival Hamas movement about his friendly relations with the United States. It might even allow him to head off a popular Palestinian rebellion against his own autocratic behavior – Mr. Abbas has failed to schedule overdue elections, including for his own post as president.

Obama is banging his head against the same wall as Bill Clinton:

The Obama administration has all along insisted that Mr. Abbas is willing and able to make peace with Israel – despite considerable evidence to the contrary. If the U.N. resolution veto has one good effect, perhaps it will be to prompt a reevaluation of a leader who has repeatedly proved both weak and intransigent.

It would nice to think that Obama’s Middle East policy advisers are reading op-ed pieces like this and doing some more realistic reassessments of the “peace process” while watching the Arab nations collapsing one by one into what is likely to become a 21st Century Muslim Brotherhood Hell.

While I certainly agree that Obama has made the world a more dangerous place on purpose, I don’t think he was expecting to be embarrassed by the “Palestinians” and I think his head may be spinning over it a bit.

It’s good to see The Washington Post slap them both around in an unsigned editorial.

That anyone still believes that the, “Palestinians,” were ever interested in peace or a two state solution is hard to swallow. The tooth fairy is more likely to appear. That someone elected President would believe it is just sad. This has been going on for how long now? Maybe the next POTUS will get it. We can dream.

  2. 2 | February 22, 2011 6:38 pm

So basically Abbas loves this situation. Basically Palestinian like not having a state, but enjoy the benefits of being the victim.

In Obama’s head I am still sure he blames those damn Jews and their bathrooms on the West Bank. Obama’s uneducated and mind boggling attempt to make Jewish “Settlements” THE only negotiating issue has set back what ever chance there was for peace by over 25 years. The damage is unprecedented. And I am afraid he and his crew are not done yet. And I am probably under estimating the damage

    This is interesting.

At a working session with Spanish Prime Minister Jose Luis Zapatero, Peres was told that Israel’s high tech is in the top league of the NBA, and that Spain is just taking its first steps in this direction.

Spain is very interested in intensifying high tech relations with Israel to the same level as political and security relations said Zapatero.

Obviously those green jobs ain’t working out, huh Zapatero!

yeah you may be right, but don’t under estimate the damage Obama has wrought by making “Settlements” not one of the issues but the ONLY issue. That even caught the Palestinians by surprise. They never even made “settlements” the only issue, but they couldn’t appear to be more moderate than the President of the United States? They have admitted as much. It doesn’t work because it would have to defy the laws of physics.

Forget Mitch Daniels running for POTUS in 2012. Hey it is better to know now
Mitch Daniels ‘salutes’ Dem lawmakers who fled IN to avoid labor vote

Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, still weighing the possibility of a presidential bid, said today that he “salutes” Democrats who fled Indiana to prevent a vote on a controversial labor bill. A Daniels aide says the governor’s words did not accurately reflect what Daniels meant to say.

Daniels made the statement during a press availability at the governor’s office. The day had been a tumultuous one, with protesters coming to Indianapolis and Democratic lawmakers fleeing to Illinois, all over right-to-work legislation, which Daniels opposes. “The activities of today are a perfectly legitimate part of the process,” Daniels told reporters. “Even the smallest minority, and that’s what we’ve heard from in the last couple days, has every right to express the strength of its views and I salute those who did.”

Daniels added that he would not send Indiana state troopers to find the fleeing Democrats. “I trust that the people’s consciences will bring them back to work,” Daniels said. “I choose to believe that they’ll come back and do the job that they’re paid to do.”

Daniels’ remarks are particularly noteworthy because Democratic state senators in Wisconsin have also fled their state to stop the legislative process on Republican Gov. Scott Walker’s budget bill. Although opinion is divided on the merits of the issue, which involves collective bargaining for public employee unions, there has been widespread criticism of the Wisconsin lawmakers for fleeing the state.

Asked about Daniels’ comments, the governor’s aide said Daniels was “saluting” only those who had come to the state capitol, not those who left it. “He was saluting the protesters who came up and peacefully and loudly expressed their point of view,” the aide says. “The language that was used probably wasn’t as clear as it could have been in the context of what was going on.”

Asked whether Daniels views fleeing the state to stop a vote as legitimate legislative activity, the aide answered, “People have walked out before. Leaving the state is kind of an extreme action…but we’ve had walkouts in the legislature before, and it is part of the process.”

He thinks his model will be a success. You know, like communism hasn’t worked anywhere because it hasn’t been done right.

This is the same delusion that liberals have about the so-called Middle East peace process – they think their losing policies simply haven’t been done right.

Usually, they think their policies haven’t been far enough to the left yet.

(This is also why the Dems think they lost in Nov 2010.)

Obama was lauding Spain’s Green Jobs economy. Well with unemployment at 22%, The Spanish now want to emulate Israel’s hi-tech based economy. Obama hates Israel.

Obama loves failed models, even when they seek other models of success.

No,if this idiot gets his wish of 7 dollar gas, people will not overlook that.We must have a solid candidate, but no one I know is going to forgive or forget 7 dollar home heating oil.It will be up to the Rs to provide a suitable candidate.

    @ vagabond trader:

The problem is too much of the “base” doesn’t like someone who speaks the truth or think outside the box. Reagan could never win the GOP nomination today.

It was always going to take a personal growth process to free me from liberalism, but I made it!!!

    Congratulations. You woke up.
I was never a liberal but I was an uninvolved artist. What’s the difference? lol.

Forget it, the R’s will never have a worthy candidate, you might as well just vote for Obama. Why will the R’s never have an acceptable candidate?, because the Rodan’s and Speranza’s and Elians and vagabond trader are far to happy to believe the Fifth Column Treasonous Media’s declarations of who cant possibly win for the R’s. When you let your enemy decide who is an acceptable candidate for you, you have already surrendered, period, end of story, now go home and cry to your pillow.

Me too! My mom was a registered Republican when it was considered to be the ultimate blasphemy for Jews from Brooklyn not to be one.

    @ doriangrey:

Hey, I didn’t say anything about giving up!!

Obama is beatable – this is what I’m saying.

We have to choose the person who can beat him carefully, though. Otherwise, we will end up helping him instead of defeating him.

We need to pick the best possible candidate. This is the right time to be having this discussion. In 2012, it will be too late.

In 2008, we went through an unplanned primary season crap shoot that gave us McCain. We can’t do this again. We need to have a better idea where we’re going in the next presidential election.

Obama has managed to screw up 25 years worth of a lot of things in the Middle East. Not only has he mangled the Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiation efforts most likely beyond repair, but look at what is happening with the Hezbollah take-over in Lebanon, the rise of the Muslim Brotherhood (who Obama so hearts) in Egypt and their take-over plans, Iran…

And by screwing up the ME so badly, he has really screwed over America
