Good morning all, today we have a guest lecturer.

Again, I will happily accept papers they you would like to write. The more detailed and narrow the better, this is a slot for the ‘academic’…are you up for the challenge?

‘Associate Professor’ Calo has graciously taken up the challenge to deliver the a Saturday Lecture so here it is:

Diabetes Type I

A Vaccine Possible?

Overview

Diabetes is a disease that affects how the body uses glucose, or sugar. Glucose comes from the all types of foods we eat and is the source of energy used to fuel our body’s cells. After you eat, the body breaks down food into glucose and other nutrients. They are absorbed into the bloodstream via the gut or gastrointestinal tract. Glucose in the blood rises after a meal which causes the pancreas to make insulin and release it into the bloodstream. The insulin and sugar enter the body’s cells together.

People with diabetes cannot make or respond to insulin properly. Their pancreas is unable to manufacture insulin. Sugar stays in the bloodstream and is unable to enter the body’s cells without insulin. This causes high blood sugar levels in the bloodstream or hyperglycemia. http://www.endocrineweb.com/conditions/diabetes/symptoms-hyperglycemia Blood sugars that are too high and not treated may result in coma and eventual death.

Here are some quick facts on Diabetes Type I

Causes and Research on of Type I Diabetes

The medical community is not quite sure why some people develop Type I Diabetes but they think it has something to do with genes. A person would then have to be exposed to something else, like a virus, to get Type I Diabetes. Here are some common viruses that are thought to cause Type I Diabetes. http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/type-1-diabetes-in-children/DS00931/DSECTION=risk-factors

However, last month researchers discovered a common virus that might be the cause for Type I Diabetes called enterovirus.

a common virus that can cause cold-like symptoms, fever, or diarrhea and may be linked to the development of this disease. A new study published in the journal BMJ provides further evidence that these viruses play a role in Type I Diabetes.

The new study was a meta-analysis, meaning the researchers did not conduct any human trials, but reviewed and compared data from about 5,000 people with Type I Diabetes to draw their conclusions. Based on the data, the researchers concluded that there is a clinically significant association between enterovirus infection and Type I Diabetes.

Here is a telling statistic from one of the sub-articles: In the study, the researchers tested the blood of 112 children, ages 2 to 16, at the time of Type I Diabetes diagnosis to see if their blood contained enteroviral DNA.  The researchers found genetic signs of enterovirus infection in 83 percent of the diabetic children, compared with just 7 percent of children without diabetes.

What does this new study mean to Type I Diabetics? Not much, it will not lead to a cure for those already afflicted with it. However, it does identify a likely viral culprit responsible for the disease. And, understanding the role viruses play in people who develop Type I diabetes does produces knowledge that could prevent the disease. Understanding the causes could lead to a vaccine to prevent it from occurring in the first place. And, that would be a good thing.

the enterovirus link to type I is good stuff.

we understand the causative links for type II.

a vaccine could the prevent 80% or so of type one, and that is a good thing as they (i assume) attack the islets of langerhans in the pancreas

Since this is about a disease the following text is somehow related:

Israel has developed a vaccine against Alzheimer’s?
Israel has apparently developed a vaccine against Alzheimer’s disease. It’s a nasal spray.

Researchers from Tel Aviv University are working on a nasal two-in-one vaccine that could protect against both Alzheimer’s disease and stroke. The proposed vaccine appears to repair vascular damage in the brain by rounding up “troops” from the body’s own immune system.

According to an article soon to appear in the journal Neurobiology of Aging, the vaccine not only has a preventative function but could also help fight Alzheimer’s symptoms that are already present.

This breakthrough is of extraordinary interest to American pharmaceutical makers, given that one in eight Americans will develop Alzheimer’s disease – and its related devastating memory loss — at some point in life. And because Alzheimer’s is often associated with vascular damage in the brain, many patients are also at great risk of a potentially fatal stroke.

Great post, Calo. Always tough to see children born with such an insidious disease. My father developed diabetes in his late 40′s. In his early 70′s he lost several toes of his right foot and, following quad-bypass surgery several months later, he lost his left leg just above the knee. He died, at age 84 in Nov. ’08, of kidney failure having refused the ordeal of dialysis. I have a sister and a brother who suffer from hypoglycemia and I suppose that points them in the direction of diabetes. So far, I’m good to go.

The fact that Dr Usama Hasan is an imam and a university physics lecturer has obviously bypassed these Muslim fanatics who are threatening him.

Reminds me of a story I read in teh Kaleej Times years ago. The reporter was interviewing a Saudi astronomer about when the moon would be spotted to mark the start of Ramadan. The astronemr allowed as how it was stupid to send a bunch of old men up on a hilltop to look and see, when he would gladly supply the Ministry of Religious Affairs a spreadsheet with the exact time and date for the next 1000 years. His comments were, um, not well-received.

if an enterovirus is involved in the onset of Type I Diabetes and we have viruses against others, then there is great hope of eliminating this nightmare. this is very good news even if it’s a small step in the direction of a vaccine. i really appreciate you sharing this and the story from your own family.

when i think of the billions of dollars that are spent by the pharmaceutical companies on research to find these cures, i get a little irritated with some folks i know in the literal world constantly denigrating the profits of these companies. i know the government uses our tax dollars to fund research too but it seems the pharmaceuticals invest a lot of their own profits into it as well.

this is also very good news. we have really got to do something about the fixed retirement age in this country (well, in the western culture, really). think of the long term productivity of the people who won’t get the alzheimers and might choose not to retire! imagine the possibility of second careers and such or new businesses created by folks who otherwise might not be able to.

    Well this is pretty crazy.

We are not alone in the universe — and alien life forms may have a lot more in common with life on Earth than we had previously thought.

That’s the stunning conclusion one NASA scientist has come to, releasing his groundbreaking revelations in a new study in the March edition of the Journal of Cosmology.

Dr. Richard B. Hoover, an astrobiologist with NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center, has traveled to remote areas in Antarctica, Siberia, and Alaska, amongst others, for over ten years now, collecting and studying meteorites. He gave FoxNews.com early access to the out-of-this-world research, published late Friday evening in the March edition of the Journal of Cosmology. In it, Hoover describes the latest findings in his study of an extremely rare class of meteorites, called CI1 carbonaceous chondrites — only nine such meteorites are known to exist on Earth.

Though it may be hard to swallow, Hoover is convinced that his findings reveal fossil evidence of bacterial life within such meteorites, the remains of living organisms from their parent bodies — comets, moons and other astral bodies. By extension, the findings suggest we are not alone in the universe, he said.

OT – Have we had any posts here on this?

In the summer of 2008 as McCain and Obama were in the midst of their campaigns to capture the presidency, a series of events dramatically changed the focus of the campaign from Iraq to the economy. From that point on, Obama took the lead and eventually won the presidency.

Now, a full two years later, the Pentagon has issued a report on the series of events that led to the 2008 economic crash. Bill Gertz writes in the Washington Times:

Evidence outlined in a Pentagon contractor report suggests that financial subversion carried out by unknown parties, such as terrorists or hostile nations, contributed to the 2008 economic crash by covertly using vulnerabilities in the U.S. financial system

“There is sufficient justification to question whether outside forces triggered, capitalized upon or magnified the economic difficulties of 2008,” the report says.

Notable for its absence is any suggestion that the economic events that arguably catapulted Obama into the White House may have originated in our own political system.

Consider: The economic house of cards started tumbling on June 26, 2008, when Senator Chuck Schumer leaked a memo questioning the solvency of IndyMac bank. This memo precipitated a run on IndyMac which led to its failure. Federal regulators pointedly cited U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, D-N.Y., in explaining the bank’s failure. “The immediate cause of the closing was a deposit run that began and continued after the public release of a June 26 letter to the OTS and the FDIC from Senator Charles Schumer of New York.”

It really is that cut ad dried, but I dont see how case for treason could reasonably be created against Schumer for trying to use a very covert act of economic warfare to the Democrat’s advantage. Nobody in either political party is willing to point fingers or name names as to who was responsible for that act of economic warfare, and I am pretty sure it wasn’t the democrat’s, although they are trying to benefit politically from it.

The problem is both political parties as well as the military brass at the Pentagon are fully aware of what would result if they actually named the country responsible for that act of war. Believe me when I tell you this, all hell would genuinely break loose. Do not think we did not and are not responding against the nation responsible. If it were to become full public knowledge what happened, our response would be forced to go from the receprical act of covert economic warfare to an open deceleration of war.

A full fledged military conflict with China is not in our best interests especially while we are entangled in two war’s in the middle east. Which by the way is exactly why china calculated that such an act was possible and in their favor when they did it. What they did not count on was the strength and resiliency of the US economy. China fell for the political hyperbole and propaganda of the American political parties who were jockeying for political power within the American political system.

The American economy is not nor was it as fragile as Democrat’s and the Republican’s portrayed it to be. The American economy is in reality insanely powerful and strong. It represent a full one half of the worlds economy, a fact very few people either know or are willing to admit. A fact easily enough verified just by looking and seeing that 1/5th, a full 20% of every dollar earned every year on the entire planet is earned in the United State’s of America, and has been for well over the last 100 years. That figure does not take into account American investments or influences abroad.
