Traffic Cone Head

From the East Meets West Department comes this marvelous adaptation of a traditional Turkish Toilet for westerners to use. Very thoughtful, because everyone knows that unless westerners are lost in the woods, we don’t do squat.

It’s a health and safety measure, because unless you know what you’re doing, you’re risking a pantload. Doing one’s business in a traffic cone, by comparison, is much more civil, and we’re all about health, safety and civility here on
The Overnight Open *ahem* Thread.

That’s how the public restrooms in gas stations were when I was stationed in Italy back in the ’80s.

    Also sans traffic cone.

We can put it in our own dirty bombs, but that would be coopting third world weaponry and we’d have to pay royalties to Iran. I say bury it so we can access it later for low cost power once the private sector comes up with a way to recycle it into curly lamps.

well, well, well. the mayor and the police chief in columbus, new mexico have been indicted…

    http://www.borderlandbeat.com/2011/03/columbus-nm-mayor-police-chief-indicted.html

The indictment alleges that, between January 2010 and March 2011, the defendants engaged in a conspiracy to purchase firearms for illegal export to Mexico. During this 14-month period, the defendants allegedly purchased approximately 200 firearms from Chaparral Guns in Chaparral, New Mexico, which is owned and operated by defendant Ian Garland. According to the indictment, the defendants purchased firearms favored by the Mexican Cartels, including AK-47-type pistols, weapons resembling AK-47 rifles but with shorter barrels and without rear stocks, and American Tactical 9 mm caliber pistols. The defendants allegedly obtained firearms from Chaparral Guns by falsely claiming they were the actual purchasers of the firearms, when in fact they were acting as “straw purchaser” who were buying the firearms on behalf of others.

During the investigation, law enforcement officers seized 40 AK-47 type pistols, 1,580 rounds of 7.62 ammunition, and 30 high-capacity magazines from the defendants before they crossed the U.S.-Mexico border. The indictment alleges that twelve firearms previously purchased by the defendants later were found in Mexico and were traced back to these defendants….

so, while the government has been blaming us, the citizens, for weapons in the hands of the drug cartels, it was government officials who were doing just that. these people are scum.

    @ Kirly:

I heard an interview with the attorney in this case earlier this evening. In the light of all the recent news about the ATF’s misadventures, they suddenly dropped the case against his clients.

    Imagine that…

Gun Dealer: ‘ATF Approved Sales to Mexican Gun Runners’

HOUSTON -- When it comes to selling weaponry to the drug thugs of Mexico, Houston gun dealer Carter’s Country has been labeled a profit hungry merchant willing to turn a blind eye to bad guys south of the border.

A Washington Post investigative story linked 115 firearms confiscated over the past two years by Mexican authorities waging the drug war to Carter’s Country outlets. That makes the largest independent gun dealer in the region among the biggest sources of fire power for the murderous cartels.

It certainly looks bad, until you hear a different side of the story.

“Let me tell you something about Carter’s Country. They have been co-operating with ATF from the get go,” says attorney Dick Deguerin who represents Carter’s Country owner, Bill Carter.

Deguerin says the U.S. Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms asked Carter’s Country to complete transactions, even when sales people strongly suspected the weapons were headed to Mexican drug gangs.

“They were told to go through with what they considered to be questionable sales. They were told to go through with sales of three or more assault rifles at the same time or five or more 9 millimeter guns at the same time or a young Hispanic male paying in cash. It’s all profiling, but they went through with it,” said Deguerin.

“They reported them promptly, either while the transaction was going on or soon there after. They did this for months and months and months. Went through with the sales because the ATF told them to go through with the sales,” he added.

Deguerin say at the ATF’s request, Carter’s Country employees followed some customers into parking lots and recorded license plate numbers.

“If the ATF had used the information that Carter’s Country developed for them they could have stopped these guns from going across the border,” insists Deguerin.

A spokesperson for ATF would neither confirm nor deny the co-operation agreement with Carter’s Country, but did say “I don’t think we would issue a blanket directive.”

That’s left Deguerin’s client feeling unjustly vilified and betrayed.

    1. A new Muslim clothing shop opened here in Denver, but I’ve been banned from it after asking to look at some bomber jackets.

    2. Just put a deposit down on a brand new Porsche and mentioned it on Facebook. I said “I can’t wait for the new 911 to arrive!” Next thing I know 4000 Muslims have added me as a friend!!

    Now, insensitivity towards Italians:

A Mafia Boss found out that his bookkeeper had stolen 10 million dollars from him. The bookkeeper was deaf: that’s why he got the job in the first place, so he wouldn’t be able to hear anything he’d ever have to testify about in court.

When the time came for the Mafia Boss to confront the bookkeeper about his missing ten million dollars, he brought along his attorney, who knew sign language. The Boss asked the bookkeeper: “Where’s the ten million bucks you embezzled from me?”

The attorney asked the bookkeeper in sign language where the ten million bucks were hidden. The bookkeeper signed back: “I don’t know what you’re talking about.”
The attorney told the Boss: “He said he doesn’t know what you’re talking about.”

That’s when the Boss pulled out a gun, put it to the bookkeeper’s temple and said, “Ask him again!” The attorney signed to the bookkeeper, “He’ll kill you for sure if you don’t tell him.”

The bookkeeper signed back: “Okay! You win! The money is in a brown briefcase, buried behind the shed in my cousin Enzo’s backyard in Queens.”

The Boss asked the attorney, “Well, what did he say?” The attorney replied, “He says you don’t have the guts to pull the trigger.”

The epicenter usually isn’t the worst place to be, the further out the wave travels from the epicenter the larger it get’s. There is a point before it dissipates where it is really bad, usual about 30 to 50 miles from the epicenter is where it is the worst.

    Ha!!!

Here’s PM David Cameron’s answer to Iran:

In February the Islamic Republic protested against the 2012 Olympic Games, saying the emblem is racist and spells the word “Zion”.

“It’s completely paranoid,” the British prime minister told the Jewish News. “If the Iranians don’t want to come, don’t come, we won’t miss you. It would be a crazy reason for not coming.”

Cameron further added that athletes unwilling to compete against Israelis would not be welcome at the Games. “They can’t come if they’re going to behave like that,” he said. “You shouldn’t have that approach to sport. If you were going to come to the Olympic Games, you take part against everybody and if you’re going to behave like that you’re not welcome.”

Cameron: We won’t miss Iranian athletes

TOKYO — Japan was struck by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake off its northeastern coast Friday, shaking buildings in Tokyo for several minutes and prompting a tsunami warning.

Japan’s meteorological agency warned that a tsunami as high as 20 feet (6 meters) could strike the coast near Miyagi prefecture, closest to the epicenter. Smaller tsunamis of up to 50 centimeters reached some coastal communities, the agency said.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii said a tsunami warning was in effect for Japan, Russia, Marcus Island and the Northern Marianas. A tsunami watch has been issued for Guam, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and U.S. state of Hawaii.

Japan has a lot of small earthquakes. Many buildings in Japan have been built to have greater endurance to the destruction of an earthquake.

The Japanese public broadcaster NHK showed cars, trucks, houses and buildings being swept away by tsunami in Onahama city in Fukushima prefecture. Black smoke was seen billowing from a building in Odaiba, a Tokyo suburb, and bullet trains to the north of the country were halted.

Television showed cars bobbing in water along side fishing boats. A 50 cm tsunami hit Japan’s northern coast.

If Obama told me water is wet, I’d seek a second opinion. But I wouldn’t have any concerns about eating Gulf seafood. Crude oil isn’t exactly highly toxic. If the sea critters were alive and well when caught for the table, they should be safe to eat. The biggest concern I would have would be in instances of red tides.

Biggest decision of the night: Drive to work and load up my heavy generator to bring home just in case, or not. I opted for not. That thing is dang heavy, and I already have enough supplies for a couple weeks and extra boat deep cycle batteries for lights. In a pinch, will eat fridge stuff, then freezer stuff, then the room temp stuff. This thing will hit at 3am local time (Hawaii), if it happens. Guess I’ll find out in the morning what tomorrow will bring and whether the kids get to stay home from school. In any event, we’re up on the mountainside so physically safe enough.

The one that had me near panic because it shook the hotel like it was nothing was a 7.0, but it was over 1000 miles to the east in the Caribbean. We were in a focus zone, and the effect was much more severe than the 6.0 ones only a hundred or so Km away. Strange.

Take care, these tsunamis can have a long reach. The southern most deaths from the Indian Ocean Tsunami was at Port Elizabeth, South Africa, literally an ocean and a continent away.

The Daily Telegraph says that 26 people have died. My condolences to their loved ones and no doubt tis number will rise, but I’ll bet that the final number will insignificant compared to an equivelant earthquake say off Pakistan.

Good Morning Blogmocracy! Today is another glorious day in the Reign of Emperor Barack Hussein I, Pasha of the United States and Defender of the Faith Ummah! There are 606 Days Until the 2012 Presidential Election! Well, I just learned something that sucks. Daylight Savings Time starts this weekend. Prepare to spring forward and lose an hour of sleep. Lovely. As if we had all the time to sleep in the world. Daylight savings time is an example of how unkillable legislation is once it gets started. It was started during World War I, and we’ll probably never get rid of it. Bleh, it is like a case of herpes: the Gift the Keeps On Giving. In other news, the Right Wing is still celebrating the victory over the Public Sector Unions in Wisconsin. There is a huge oppertunity for the Republicans here, if they will press their advantage. I can see the ads with Uncle Sam and the caption “The Pulbic Sector Employees Unions want YOU to pay for their retirement”. If I could do Photoshop, I’d make the damne thing (I am not artistically inclined). When the Enemy breaks, you press him hard. Do not give him time to regroup.

I was looking at the images, and wondered about the poor people in the vehicles just ahead of the wave. Did they make it or not? What would I be doing in their situation? To see the way the wave flattened those green houses and head towards them at a greater speed than they were travelling. At the same time tracks which Savage would be proud to drive were being tossed around like a matchstick in a stream. Still gives me shivers.

TIGTA: IRS Can’t Find 9% of its Guns and Other Investigative Equipment

The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration yesterday released Weaknesses Continue to Exist in the Controls Over Investigative Equipment (2011-30-008):
The IRS should strengthen its controls over its investigative equipment to prevent waste and loss, according to a report publicly released today by TIGTA.

The IRS’s Criminal Investigation Division has nearly 44,000 pieces of investigative equipment ranging from cars and badges to firearms and radios with a total value of nearly $126 million. This equipment is essential to accomplish the IRS’s investigative and enforcement functions. …

Wow! How do you lose a gun? I had one stolen from me once, but lose? See where this is going? First we have credible evidence that the ATF is running guns to the Mexican Drug Cartels, not the IRS is “losing” them. Maybe it is time to get the Federal Government out of the gun business except for the military. Completely out. Many of the laws they enforce there are unconstitutional, anyway. You just haven’t had a Supreme Court with the balls to say so explicitly. Hopefully that will change in the near future. I’d say Kennedy is the stmbling block, but we can’t replace him until we replace Obama. Would that Kennedy had retired while George Bush was President. The other day Rodan asked me why conservatives should love Bush. Alito and Roberts are two very good reasons.
