I was cleaning out some old stuff from the attic and I came across my old spud cannon.

What’s a Spud Gun you ask?  Well, this man does a fine job of explaining what one is in simple easy to follow steps.

Well, anyway here’s something for the math geeks to chew on re: pressurized PVC construction.

Operating and bursting pressure for PVC pipes.

Yea, my brother’s mother-in-law gets pissed when we break out her other son-in-laws spud cannon, of course we have been known to launch beer cans and stuff too…

Semi-related aside, for the PA firearms enthusiasts…
If you have a Dunham’s sporting goods nearby, there’s supposed to be a decent sale in the gun dept starting tomorrow. Or, so I’ve been led to believe.

Also…Grice’s gun Shop NEXT weekend is supposed to be having their anniversary sale. Go to Hell pricing on Ruger’s and Smith Sigmas.

    Grice’s ad here.

Lastly, a gun show at the Harrisburg Farm Show Complex starts tomorrow as well.

Building a spud gun looks like a less damaging financial option.

I have never built a spud gun, per se, but I did once build an acetylene cannon made from the heavy cardboard tube that was the core in a roll of carpet. The striker was a flint striker meant for use with a Coleman lantern.

Acetylene was generated by dumping calcium carbide into a scrap dry-chemical fire extinguisher half-full of water. The valve on the extinguisher could used to squirt a shot of acetylene into the combustion chamber.

We would stuff a wad of newspaper down the barrel for wadding (one of the higher and better uses for the MSM product) and drop in an empty stubby beer bottle for a projectile. A maximum range of about 100 yards was obtained, when the bottle didn’t break on launch.

This cannon had a very loud bark to it, too. Big fun. Tennis balls would make ideal ammo, too.

Save a little more and get a quality complete .22 upper. Spikes. I cheaped out but got lucky with a Chiappa .22LR upper. Runs on Black Dog magazines, and goes bang every time.

It even became the upstairs goto gun for a bit. The advantage of this setup was 30 rounds that wouldn’t deafen the good guys w/o ear pro if shot inside.

Nice idea. I bought a up a bunch of Remington 147gr JHP subsonic 9mm
back in the day at a Cow Palace gun show, figured they’d be easier on the ears
as indoor defensive rounds…but the .22lr out of a 16″ carbine barrel would be even less harsh
    on the ol’ eardrums.

147gr is the only thing I can stand to fire from my 9′s, preferably self loaded but i’ll buy when I have to.

the browning hi power was john browning’s design after the 1911 .45acp.

I like the lines of the Hi-Powers – they remind me of CZ-75′s…Or, should I say, the CZ’s remind me of the Hi-Powers given who was on scene first. Never shot one though.

    @ lobo91:
I’m kind of itching to try one in 10mm. The 20′s though seem a bit more scarce than the 17s, 23s, etc.

An acquaintance loves his .40 I tease him and call it a 10mm that has to ride the short bus. :)

    @ Brick:

i have one of these as well:

    cz-52 in 7.62x25mm TT.

86 grains at 1375+ ft/second from a pistol. (up to 2200ft/sec in some new ammo)

a decent write up on the cz-52

That’s a great combination! That round is supposed to defeat IIIa armor at the warmer loadings. I saw J&G Sales has the M57s in stock $199.00 that shoot the same round. As cheap as the ammunition is currently, it’s very tempting…but I really want to consolidate calibers, and 7.62×25 is adding in the wrong direction. :(

the cz round is a flamethrower! the magsafe rounds are hitting 220ft/sec.

Also, is it time now to brag about the 640 rounds of Russian AK ammo I got as a present from an admirer? I have to say, the can was a BITCH to open. It came with this primitive can-opener from hell, and a normal can opener was too weak for it. The cats thought I was opening a giant can of cat food. Alas, kittehs! THESE treats were for Mommy! Now I have to load my 50-round drum, that came from the same guy… Did I mention he also gave me a bayonet and a flash-suppressor? I think I should marry him… LOL.

Giant soviet tuna can. Wrap some cloth electrician’s tape around the opener
