A Lesson In Unintended Consequences: The Story Of Liberal Economics.

One of my many peeves about the liberal mind set is the innate ability to avoid any discussion about the responsibility for enactment of their destructive policies. I have never fully understood how it happens, but it always does. One reason may be their ability to shed tears at any provocation and immediately be able to claim that they are the only one who truly care about the terrible problems that they create. One example would be liberals successfully banning of DDT, the subsequent deaths of 50 Million People world wide due to increases in a Malaria epidemic, followed by an endless supply of liberals bleating on endlessly about how we, as human beings must do more to stop the horrific spread of the Malaria epidemic that they themselves caused.

Example number two, takes us to Barak Obama’s home state of Illinois. The blue staters in Illinois, in typical liberal fashion ran up a deficit that has ended up crippling the state. Don’t fret over it though, they had a plan. Tax the living snot out of the private sector, and just confiscate the short fall from others. Read the link to see how that is working out for them.

Amazon leaves Illinois, and Illinois tries to make the rest of America pay for their stupidity.

The unintended consequence of course is that businesses leave. Why should they stay? The more Illinois acts irresponsibly, and tries to make others pay for their idiocy, the more those being forced to pay, (against their will in most cases,) will make the decision to leave. If Durbin’s new scheme to steal from the private sector actually does become law, what will keep the Amazon’s of the world here in America.  Amazon is very capable from opening an online business in the Cayman Islands, or even in China if they so choose.  At one time, on line gambling was the hot thing to crack down on.  When we as a nation tried that, we succeeded only in increasing the volume of online gambling.  How much longer will we allow the liberals of this country to run amok and keep creating the very problems that they are constantly whining about?  Good luck Illinois, I don’t feel compelled in the slightest to help you out of the situation created by your stupidity.  Think long and hard before electing another liberal to any job with more responsibility than dog catcher.

Another lesson in unintended consequences comes to us from Washington.  This one makes me laugh, because I don’t live in Washington.  If I did, and actually bought one of these smug mobiles, I would be fighting mad indeed.
How much more of this Socialist nonsense will you good folks in the State of Washington force upon yourselves?

So, to reiterate, for those of you who did not read the story, here it is.  Washington’s liberals succeeded in making cars which run on gasoline economically inferior to those which are hybrids.  They had to impose literally the highest energy taxation rates and punitive measures to achieve this.  They also had to throw in some hefty subsidizing activity for a health dose of crony capitalism on the other side, but after a couple of Billion in expense that Washington’s citizens could not afford, Washington did succeed in its destructive quest to engineer society.  The result of course was a collapse in the revenue collected by the commerce having an adequate oil supply produces.  So, in order to make up this shortfall, rather than allow the free markets to do what they have always done so well, Washington is going to punish her citizens for doing what the state forced them into.

Perfect example of grabbernint inefficiency and waste:

We had to file an amendment for our 2009 tax return. Three letters from the IRS just arrived, one for my husband, the other an identical one for me,stating the details and do we agree with their conclusions. In envelope # 3 was a tax return check.

There is Sophistry afoot. Obama creates an economic
diaster & blames anybody but himself.
He talks about collective responsibility ,while he &
his wife spend our money like the two spolied grifters
    that they are.
When some crazed Lefty kills a rich guy, will the Media

    @ RIX:
    @ vagabond trader:

Demonizing big oil is a pet peeve of mine. Profit and loss are equally important in a free market system. When a company shows a big profit, it means that they have done a good job in serving the community as a whole. The bigger the profit, the better a job they have done.

Big oil produces a product that we all need. Human beings are not genetically born with a need for oil, nor is the substance addictive. Its usage has made it possible for our lives to be much more convenient. This weekend, oil allowed me to travel Friday afternoon to visit family in the Philidelphia area, and then return again on Sunday. 150 years ago, that would not have been possible. An oil company made a profit on that transaction, but that was also my choice. I felt it was worth the money to be able to visit in this fashion. The fact that I was able to do this in such a convenient manner, as are most Americans, leads some people to believe that big Oil’s product should be considered a basic human right. Villify these companies at your own peril, and remember, what will we do if we ever succeed in our self destructive quest to put every oil company out of business?

The only Democrats I know who voted for Obama blame everything but Obama for this mess. When you ask them ‘What about the war in Libya’? they just say “I don’t understand it”. Breaking up is HARD TO DO. I guess casting that Obama vote made them feel so good, they will resist and ignore all evidence. These are people whose lifestyle has not been impacted by the economic downturn. It will take more pain for them to notice.

    “Big Oil”? Bwahahahahaha!

Find where Exxon/Mobil, the world’s lagest COMMERCIAL oil company, stands on a list of world oil companies (giant hint – it ain’t in the Top Ten.)

Courtesy of The Coyote, a 5 year list of Exxon/Mobil’s profits as a percentage of sales…

    2006: 10.5%

    2005: 9.7%

    2004: 8.5%

    2003: 8.5%

    2002: 5.4%

    2001: 7.1%

That’s actually average to mediocre for large industrial companies, and less by far than a lot of other types of companies. And they’ve had years much worse than that just in the 37 years I’ve been in the business. IIRC, ALL the world’s commercial oil companies put together control less than 10 % of the world’s reserves, and there are hundreds, if not thousands, of commercial oil companies.

Capitalism created success by giving people what they want. Obama socialism is shoving things down the throats of people that they REALLY do not want. I’m pretty old-fashioned and almost impervious to marketing. However, when I need something like a new stove or a new car, I want it to be well built and I want choices. Socialism will remove even more choices than it already has. We are always replacing something made in China with something else made in China because they don’t work for long. I don’t mind paying the extra money for something reliable and well-designed.

My brother-in-law said the other day “Even Legal-Aid is being cut back in Ontario”. It made me crack up, saying that the system is so stressed, even the poor can’t afford free legal services. We have that Human Rights Commission where the taxpayers foot the bill for the so-called ‘victims’ (lots of Muslims). The business owners or individuals being sued have to pay their own legal costs and are sometimes forced out of business or mortgaging their homes. Canada follows a more European model than the U.S. The bills are coming due, no matter who is in power. We are incapable of learning from history. sigh.

You’ll surely have noticed that liberals only quote industrial profits in dollars, never, ever as a percentage of sale or, worse yet, ROI. That would just kind of blow the whole meme. If I say I made $ 250,000 profit from my investment portfolio last year (I wish), what does that tell as to how my investments performed? Well, it tells you they weren’t negative – and that’s absolutely all it tells you. If I invested $ 1,000.000, I’m a miracle worker. If I invested $ 10,000,000,000, I’m an idiot. It’s the percentage profit or ROI that counts – the plain numbers are irrelevant.

Absolutely, and to take the point further. How hard did they have to work to produce that profit? Meaning, how many people did they employ, and how much did they pay those people? What was the economic benefit of their product beyond just the imdediate terms of profit and taxation produced. The people who bought the oil used it for some other purpose other than just burning it for fun. Oil is used in making a slew of other products, transportation of goods and services, convenience for people traveling to and from work. Every industry depends on oil to function. The profits are either reinvested into new technoligies, or spent on other things within the economy.

I guess what I am saying is I think if a company makes an obscene profit, that is a good thing. It means that they have provided a valuable service.

I have never fully understood how it happens, but it always does.

I have always suspected a few reasons for this apparent moral enigma. Bleeding heart liberalism is what motivates them to prove they are right on social issues. And this extends from the individual all the way to the rest of the world. This attitude and temperament is where the meme of PC sprang from. If’s just not fair that some are not as equal as others. Never mind that some are happy to be abnormal, don’t want to work or choose to live a deviant lifestyle.

This meme also extends in similar fashion and how they view America to be more prosperous than other nations. They have this idea of global inequality and it just ain’t fair that America dominate economically over other nations. This is what drives them to abandon homegrown patriotism and choose rather to forward agenda whose sole purpose is to weaken America and put us on a more equatable level as other nations.

The only problem with their ideas is it does nothing for the very poorest nations, just as it does nothing for the poorest of individuals. To them the poor are a tool as they play games with power and money to level the playing field among the prosperous.

Good news! SCOTUS Rejects Climate Tort.

How unconvincing is the green legal doctrine of the climate tort? So much so that not a single Justice seemed persuaded when the Supreme Court heard oral arguments last Tuesday—even some of the liberals questioned the theory with Scalia-like vigor.

In American Electric Power Co. v. Connecticut, a group of state attorneys general are suing five utilities, claiming their carbon emissions are a “nuisance” under common law. Boiled down, they’re asking the Court to give judges the power to create climate policies—and weigh their costs and benefits—that would ordinarily be fashioned by the politically accountable branches.

But don’t take our word for it. “I mean, even just reading that part of your complaint, it sounds like the paradigmatic thing that administrative agencies do rather than courts,” Justice Elena Kagan told New York Solicitor General Barbara Underwood. “Now what,” chimed in Ruth Bader Ginsburg, “the relief you’re seeking seems to me to set up a district judge, who does not have the resources, the expertise, as a kind of super-EPA.”

Later, Justice Kagan, President Obama’s second nominee to the High Court, asked, “General, do you think that you have a federal common law cause of action against anybody in the world?” After all, everyone contributes to global warming. “Obviously the greatest benefit to reduce global warming would be, of course, to shut down the power plants, right?” as Chief Justice John Roberts put it. Should the courts have that power too—but extended over the entire economy?

Or “can the courts set a tax?” wondered Stephen Breyer. Ms. Underwood claimed that such a policy wouldn’t “abate the nuisance,” to which Justice Breyer acidly replied, “Oh, this will. This is addressed to that. It says abate the nuisance, here’s how you’re going to do it. You’re going to put a $20 a tax ton on carbon, and lo and behold, you will discover that nuisance will be abated.”

It’s heartening to see the Justices reaffirm their faith in the democratic process, especially after a 2006 case that the Obama Administration has used to justify its autocratic choice to impose carbon regulation via the Environmental Protection Agency. But even the proponents of the climate tort have been open about their bad faith. The point of this and other lawsuits has merely been to harass industry and coerce business into supporting a carbon crackdown, no matter what elected representatives decide.

While the Court could dismiss the judicial encroachment of the climate tort in a number of ways, the good news for the economy is that it appears to be toast.

We have had freedom in Europe ? That’s news to me//// :-P

Seriously: in Europe it was never about freedom. It was always about social security/welfare, “equality” (whatever this means) and the “great ideas” like the European Union.

It’s like the former secular liberals in Turkey. They are faced with being thrown in jail for expressing anything against the government, so they are fearful and silent.

Immediatly after the death of Attatürk the country started the re-Islamization. The first election after Attatürk showed already that the religious parties gained lot of voters. It was the military which prevented a theocracy but the European Union has forced Turkey (to the great pleasure of Ecevit) to castrate its military. The Turkish military has been under attack from both sides: the MB affiliates have overtaken the military schools and academies so that many young officers in the lower level are affiliated with the MB and the EU forced the military to be “constitutional” and to respect the decision of the voters.

The bottom line is that the progressive left and its minions do not understand how market capitalism creates wealth. Therefore they are quick to destroy the only tool there is for making the ‘poor’ ‘rich’.

Poster child for a wealth stealer/destroyer right here: Former Obama Adviser Van Jones Helping to Push ‘Human’ Rights for Mother Nature.

Van Jones, the Obama administration’s controversial former “green jobs czar,” has found a new calling: helping to push for a new, global architecture of environmental law that would give Mother Nature the same rights status as humans.
The new movement is almost certain to be showcased at a U.N.-sponsored global summit on “sustainable development” to take place in Rio de Janeiro in May 2012, when similar issues of “global environmental governance” are a major focus of attention.
Jones is taking up the challenge as one of the newest board members of an obscure San Francisco New Age-style organization known as the Pachamama Alliance, which has been creating a global movement to make human rights for Mother Nature an international reality — complete with enforceable laws — by 2014. The Rio summit will create an important midpoint for that campaign.

Washing Times Editorial “Ice makers are the latest target in the left’s ongoing war against the conveniences of modern life. Earlier this month, the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) issued a report that may condemn this essential household item to the contraband list that already includes functonal light bulbs, toilets, washing machines and showerheads.”
The claim by these prog nitwits is that without an ice maker in the refrigerator you will save up to $37 over the life of the appliance.
