These are the kinds of pictures that make me smile. It is also irrefutable proof that not all bears shit in the woods, and that some bears sing while taking care of business. Then it occurred to me to follow some of the links on SG’s site, and I found a map.

It is intuitively obvious to the casual observer that the original version was missing some critical information, so I took the liberty of enhancing it, just to post it here on The Overnight Open Thread.

Family money I’m not sure what part of this is a good or a bad idea. Giving someone a $36 million dollar discretionary fund and then applying what are probably ‘white man’ rules to it. My experience with reservations is that the family system is always the wealth system. And goods are shared freely between family members in a more social way then what we see in modern nuclear families. If you are on the outs with the power family(ies) not much is coming your way.

An Arctic explorer came face to face with a polar bear. Afraid of being eaten, he fell to his knees and started praying. When the polar bear knelt down beside him and started praying too, the man shouted, “It’s a miracle!” The polar bear opened one eye and said “Don’t talk while I’m saying grace.”

A guy is forced to live in a remote Eskimo villiage but is having trouble interacting with the villiagers. Finally he corners one of them and asks why they won’t talk to him.

The villiager responds that he has not been initiated as a man. He ask’s what do I have to do?

The villiager says, first you have to drink 2 bottles of Russian Vodka, then you have to go into a cave and kill a polar bear with your bear hands, then to seal your induction into manhood you have to make love for 10 hours straight with one of our women.

The man says he will do it. That night there’s a big party to initiate the stranger. Everyone sits around the fire and they pass him a bottle of Vodka. He down’s about half without much trouble, bet the second half is much more difficult. Finally he finishes it, and they pass him another. He finally manages to finish off the second bottle and the crowd claps and sings. Then he tried to get up but fell over drunk.

The Cheif picks him up and points him in the direction of the polar bear cave. He staggers over and climbs in. Suddenly there’s a huge commotion from within the cave. Bears growling and him screaming and wailing in pain. Half an hour later he stumbles out of the cave, Torn to shreds, bloodied, and half dead. He turns to the crowd and drunkenly says,

Okeee now where’s the woman I gotta kill?

So this guy goes to Juarez, but forgets his watch. He sees a Mexican sitting on a cot next to a burro and asks the man, ‘Do you know what time it is?’

    ‘Si Senor let me check’

He cups the burros balls in his hand, lifts them and then says, ‘it’s 10:30 Senor’.

The guy says, ‘How in the heck can you tell the time from lifting burro balls?’

‘Let me show you Senor. First you cup the balls and then lift them up, and… you see that clock over there?

Good Morning Blogmocracy! Today is another glorious inglorious day in the Reign of Emperor Barack Hussein I, Pasha of the United States and Defender of the Faith Ummah! There are 465 Days Until the 2012 Presidential Election! One year and 100 days to go! Time flies, but where’s the fun? Certainly not in DC, where the Government is in a bigger mess than it has ever been. Boehner managed to get his deficit reduction plan (as opposed to debt reduction plan) through the House by including a Balanced Budget Amendment in the process. I think that this is a good, reasonable compromise. It is, indeed, the best we can hope to get with the Democrats in control of the Senate and the White House. Poliics is War, and part of warfighting is knowing which battles to pick and which hills to die on. As is, it looks like thye Democrats are going to kill this bill in the Senate. Reid has said it is his way (thus, Obama’s way) or derfault. The Republicans need to make him own that. Personally, I think Obama has chosen default as his strategy for winning the 2012 election. As crazy as that sounds, it may work for him. it is a gamble, but he probably sees more chance in that than in owning the lousy economy his record-breaking deficits (thus record debt) has brought us. If he can fool enough of the people enough of the time, he will win four more years to destroy the American economy and wreck our standing abroad. With the aid of the MFM, this is a doable task for him. It will require a united and strong front to defeat him. I urge the Establishment Republicans to put the Party and Country first, and cease their insane war against the Tea Party. We passed a reasonable plan in the House. This required compromise on both parts, but real compromise requires both parties to, well, compromise. Demanding that one side cave or you will bring everything crashing down isn’t working toward compromise. That is what Reid is doing, and we need to be front and center exposing that for the high-handed blackmail that it is. Reid and the Democrats are the ones trying to hold the economy hostage in order to get what they want from Republicans. They are completely unwilling to cut any real fat from the budget. That must become the issue, if we are to win this battle of the Cold Civil War.

Senate Tables Boehner’s Debt Ceiling Bill

The United States Senate quickly dispatched the debt ceiling bill passed by the House Friday evening, tabling the Republican bill indefinitely and moving quickly to start consideration of a Democratic plan that would avoid default on Tuesday.

Less than two hours after House Speaker John A. Boehner pushed his bill through the House over the strenuous objections of nearly two dozen of his own Republican members, the Democratic leadership in the Senate followed through on their promise to kill his legislation.

But the move now sets up an uncertain 72 hours as the Congress moves ever closer to the Tuesday deadline when the Treasury Department says the country will default on its financial obligations without an increase in the debt ceiling.

  74. 75 | July 30, 2011 4:10 am

Not that it matters, because the bill is DOA anyway, but does anybody know how large the debt ceiling raise included in it was, and how long that was estimated to last?

Here’s the list of Republicans that voted ‘No’

    Justin Amash (Mich.)
    Michele Bachmann (Minn.)
    Chip Cravaack (Minn.)
    Jason Chaffetz (Utah)
    Scott Desjarlais (Tenn.)
    Tom Graves (Ga.)
    Tim Huelskamp (Kans.)
    Steve King (Iowa)
    Tim Johnson (Ill.)
    Tom McClintock (Calif.)

    Connie Mack (Fla.)
    Jim Jordan (Ohio)

    Jeff Duncan (S.C.)
    Trey Gowdy (S.C.)

Okay, that was a debt ceiling raise that was estimated to be sufficient through Feb. 2012. Good.

    Knowing When To Say Yes

Some hard-liners in the House are refusing to support John Boehner’s latest plan. They seem to believe it’s doesn’t achieve enough savings.

Not to be too blunt about it, but they need to get a clue.

James Capretta, who trashed the Gang of Six plan, says Boehner’s plan is okay. So does Grover Norquist.

Here’s what they understand: $1.2 trillion of savings from domestic discretionary programs, with real, enforceable budget caps, over ten years, is a huge accomplishment. And it still leaves on the table some of the low-hanging entitlement fruit (a “chained” Consumer Price Index adjustment) and some of the mid-hanging entitlement fruit (hiking the Medicare eligibility age merely to coincide with that of Social Security). So that means that part of the other $1.6 trillion in savings, to come from the later commission, is actually likely to be fairly easy to achieve as well.

The history is this: Never before has Congress used the debt ceiling hike to force serious budget savings. Any successful use of this debate toward that end should be counted as a significant accomplishment. Sure, some on the hard right — and I have ALWAYS been hard-right on cutting spending — may complain that Boehner’s plan isn’t as good as the original “Cut, Cap, and Balance.” So the bleep what. Anybody who ever expected CC&B to become law in its original form wasn’t living in the real world. James Madison and Roger Sherman didn’t design our system to allow one House to steamroll both the other congressional chamber and the president (although they did indeed give more power to the House of Reps. vis-a-vis the president, on domestic issues, than it has historically made use of). The U.S. government is designed to force compromise.

Frankly, the Boehner plan isn’t a 50-50 compromise; it’s a win for conservatives, for fiscal responsibility, and for the nation. It effectively changes the trajectory of spending for the first time since Washington started bingeing again (after three good years) in the fall of 1998. It’s a remarkable achievement when working against the most leftist president in history. Conservatives should not torpedo it.

That article misses the point in several respects. I’ve said it before , but I’ll say it again – it’s the duration of the debt ceiling limit that is the critical factor here. Moving it past the next election is political suicide for conservatives. This bill did not do that, so in that respect, it was good.

Secondly, the “cuts” in this bill came from binding future congresses – that isn’t real, and the “cuts” are trivial. But then, nothing that actually makes it into law in the current situation is going to be any better, so that’s kind of a wash.

There are two critical things for the House Republicans to hold the line on. The first is some sort of cuts, even imaginary ones. The more important is limiting the debt ceiling increase to require re-visitation next year. While presidential hopefuls may be prowling about the landscape now, the American people are not really paying that much attention. This time next year will be an entirely different matter. The liberals must be made to deal with these issues in the full heat of the campaign season.

So, if it wasn’t in the bill the article didn’t miss the point, did it ?

  84. 85 | July 30, 2011 5:45 am

    @ Guggi:

The article misses the point by not mentioning the timing inherent in the amount by which the debt ceiling is raised. And describing anything in this bill as “real, enforceable budget caps, over ten years,” is horseshit and the author should know it. Those could be voted out of existance any time. You cannot bind a future congress – it’s that simple.

  85. 86 | July 30, 2011 6:19 am

A democracy cannot exist as a permanent form of government. It can only exist until the majority discovers it can vote itself largess out of the public treasury. After that, the majority always votes for the candidate promising the most benefits with the result the democracy collapses because of the loose fiscal policy ensuing, always to be followed by a dictatorship, then a monarchy.

That doesn’t appear to be a quote from anybody famous, but it is nevertheless true. We’ve reached that stage, I am afraid. The next coupole of years will determine if that is a terminal state, or if we can somehow force it into remission and save the country. I am not optomistic, but what can we do but try?

But this applies to every bill the congress votes for, does it ?

Let’s pass a debt ceiling increase that’s good for 12 months, just in time for the next election cycle. Let’s include real cuts in spending. Cuts from 10 billion on this program to 9 billion, not from 10 billion to 11 billion because we were going to spend 12 billion. and, for every 100 billion in real cuts, let’s compromise with the left and add a 1 year, 1% (from 38% to 38.38%) tax increase on ‘the rich’ that also expires in 12 months.

But the real blame needs to be put on the left. They’re the one’s who couldn’t pass a budget last October when they had control of the Senate AND the House. Republican politicians, the RNC, NRCC and every conservative out there needs to bring this up at every opportunity.

That is correct, which is why calling such things “cuts” of any kind is absurd.

That requires Republicans who want to win more than they want to be collegial *spit* Those are in precious few supply. The Republicans have been letting the Democrats beat them at the propaganda campaign since 1933. I’d love nothing more than to see the gloves come off and us fight a no-holds-barred full-bore political war in this country, but we need a leader for that to happen. s Rick Perry that leader? I do not know.

Then what’s the solution ? Without bipartisanship you can’t get anything through the Senate and people will call the Republicans evil because they don’t get their money. They all will blame the Republicans NOT the Democrats for their misery. Do you as a Republican gain anything from this for 2012 ?

  91. mfhorn
    92 | July 30, 2011 7:15 am

    @ Guggi:

Like I suggested, if we can get enough Republicans/Conservatives out there, first off asking why a budget wasn’t passed 9 months ago, when the left was in power, and second asking where Obama’s budget is, then we’d have a prayer of winning on this issue.

    <off to work. Bleah.

  92. 93 | July 30, 2011 7:24 am

    @ Guggi:

We’re NOT going to get any real cuts through – that’s just a fact. Not until Jan., 2013, if then. The Dems are going to blame the Republicans no matter what happens, so I see no point in worrying about that, either.

Keep the debt ceiling limit a year or less in effectiveness, hold the line on no new taxes, and stand on doing some sort of “cuts” even if they’re not real. Then do it all over again in the middle of the election season next year and hope for the best. It’s either that, or take up arms. And I’d rather delay that second option as long as possible.

The one bright spot is that the credit ratings agencies, who were noticeably AWOL on the mortgage-backed securities issue, seem to have come back to life on this one. I think we have the Euros to thank (strangely enough) for that. The agencies have been hammering EU members’ sovereign debt, and once you start down that road, you have to keep going, apparently. They have already made it clear they’re not going to buy some of the most ridiculous administration proposals, like trying to foist off already scheduled war terminations as “cuts.”

  93. 94 | July 30, 2011 8:51 am

NOTE: The only REAL budget cut that would pass the Dem-controlled senate and not get vetoed by the WH would be a massive cut in the military budget. That would sail right through, no problem.

  94. 96 | July 30, 2011 8:54 am

ADDENDUM – Look for a military cut to feature prominently from anything that spews from the Mouth of Sauron, AKA Harry Reid.

Good morning Guggi. Slightly OT, but still
I think speaking to your point.
The ratings agencies Moodys , S&P etal ignored
the situation when Obama was raiding & destroying
the treasury & when toxic mortgage loans were being
    made.
They didn’t make a peep then, but now they have total
clarity? I think that their credibility is a little thin.

I agree, they act very curoius, dont they ? One would assume that the accumulation of more and more debt would make them nervous but on the contrary.
