Saturday Night at the Movies – Death Wish (1974)

Filed under Crime, Movies, Open thread at February 4th, 2012 - 7:00 pm

A huge success in the Autumn of 1974, Death Wish was ripped by the usual left-wing critics as a racist, pro vigilante film. I remember  my friend and I actually sat through the movie twice – that’s how much we enjoyed it. The thing is that Charles Bronson’s character, Paul Kersey was not a vigilante -- everyone that he killed was in self defense (all the men he killed pulled weapons on him first) and the only  thing he could have been charged with would have been illegal possession of a gun.  For those of you who are not familiar with the New York City of the 1970’s, the city was just not working! Crime was rampant, the subways were continuously breaking down (notice the graffiti on them in the film), taxes and regulations were out of control and there was a palpable sense of menace. That does not mean that New York City could not be a fun place to be at times, but films such as Death Wish, The Warriors,  Panic In Needle Park,  Serpico,  Across 110th Street, Alphabet City, Ft. Apache: the Bronx, The Taking of Pelham 1,2,3, -- were a far cry from the sunny and cheerful city of Breakfast at Tiffany’s,  Barefoot in the Park, The Odd Couple and The Apartment.

Although the acting (aside from Bronson) is not very good in this film, this is a very taut and well made movie and just 1 1/2 hours (nowadays every film seems to go over 2 hours).

If you look close enough you will recognize:

Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs who later played Freddie  Boom-Boom Washington on Welcome Back Kotter (he was one of the thugs in Morningside Heights Park ), Olympia Dukakis who played a policewoman at a meeting with the Detective who says she would not walk more than a few blocks from any supermarket, Jeff Goldblum as one of the thugs who attacks Hope Lange (Mrs. Kersey), and Christopher Guest (who played Nigel  Tufnel  in “This Is Spinal Tap”)  as a young policeman “Patrolman Reilly” who finds Bronson’s gun at the end.

Unfortunately there was four sequels to Death Wish none of which were particularly good. However for those of you who like to bash  Rudy Giuliani  -- you have a good idea about the type of city he inherited.

I was here in the ’70s, and although I had many good times in the city, the place was a disaster. Rudy did an amazing job.

my grandmom went to elementary and high school with mr bronson:

Bronson was the first member of his family to graduate from high school.[3] As a young child, Bronson did not initially know how to speak English and only learned it in his teens. He spoke Polish at home.[4] Bronson’s father died when he was 10, and he went to work in the coal mines. Initially, Bronson worked in the office of a coal mine, later in the mine itself.[3] He worked there until he entered military service during World War II.[3] He earned $1 per ton of coal mined. His family was so poor that, at one time, he reportedly had to wear his sister’s dress to school because he had nothing else to wear.[10][11]

In 1943, Bronson enlisted in the United States Army Air Forces and served as an aerial gunner in the 760th Flexible Gunnery Training Squadron, and in 1945 as a B-29 Superfortress crewman with the 39th Bombardment Group based on Guam. He was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received during his service.[12]

i heard that from my grandmom years before i read it, so i’m gonna guess its true.

Never saw a Bronson film, although I like action/adventure. I do like Bruce Willis and Clint Eastwood. Movies drenched in blood are the norm. imo, we are facing enough problems on the planet. I’d rather not be raked over the coals for entertainment. But then, I like Downton Abbey. :-)
I liked more movies before they got all lefty-preachy. Can’t someone just tell me a good story?

NY before Rudy was a very dangerous place. I remember the palpable feeling of fear as we drove through certain areas when i was a kid. “Lock your doors and keep your face to the front” mom would say and then we would drive in silence. This was in the late 80′s. Dad was shot on the streets of Brooklyn in the 70′s. Mom still has his blood-soaked clothes. He never talks about it.

My favorite Bronson film was The Mechanic, but the Vigilante films were good to. Plenty of gratuitous mayhem.

Indeed, husband, wife, and son were convicted on all counts to life in prison. They are appealing, of course. Waste of taxpayer money and oxygen. They would have had no problem in a Muslim country. That’s what people fail to understand.

DiCaprio, Jude Law, Depp, Affleck, and a host of other interchange-ables. I will say that DiCaprio has a range of acting talent, but he’s not a guy-guy.

Not really trying to make a point; just filling in the blanks  . Kirk Douglas is currently 96 years old. He was a great tough guy. When my dad was going to USC in the early 40′s, he and his frat brothers would get pocket money by going to the studios and being as extras. He was in a movie with Robert Mitchum and another one with Glenn Miller.

POLICE say up to 40 men caused extensive damage to the Syrian embassy in Canberra last night after smashing their way inside.

Australian Federal Police say the group tore up the ground floor of the O’Malley building, as protesters attacked five other Syrian embassies in Europe and the Middle East.

Three Syrian embassy staff were inside the Canberra building at the time of the incident, but were unhurt.

The incident follows the deaths more than 200 people yesterday in the city of Homs.

I think Hollywood has always had a leftward lean. However, during WWII, they were pro-USA all of the way. None of the anti-American crap that we see today. Those who weren’t actually in the service were involved in public service films, war bond drives and support for the troops. The current bunch would have been tarred and feathered for their hate America rants.

The interesting times we live in. I come from a rural, conservative Ohio county, so it really doesn’t change much at the local level, but it is apart of the rust belt and that isn’t going to change. It was great growing up there, but over the years the manufacturing plants closed and the persuit of employment forced most of us to leave. I go home once a year as well– keeps me going.

Six years before Death Wish he starred in Sergio Leone’s Once Upon A Time In The West, which is excellent movie. I recommend you’ll see it.

He also was in The Great Escape (1963).

    @ Speranza:
True. The reason why I mentioned Once Upon A Time In The West was because in it the man whom Bronson plays is pursuing a vendetta. In a way it is similar role, though I dare say there’s world of difference between the two roles as in Leone’s movie he is more of a hunter in my opinion.
