Beads, Beer, Boobs & Blues = Heureux Mardi Gras!

Everyone should experience Mardi Gras in New Orleans at least once. The parades are awesome, the music is great, and there are uninhibited  and inebriated college girls. There are also pickpockets, drug dealers and people who will fight you over a plastic necklace. The beer/drinks are cheap (since they deal in volume) and the streets and sidewalks flow with unmentionable liquids so you’ll need to burn your shoes afterwards. Again, everyone should experience Mardi Gras in New Orleans at least once.

And just for all you late night BlogMockrateers, there’s a secret bonus if you click the pic on The Overnight Open Thread.

Or you could just go to an Occupy Wall Street camp instead.

I guess I could goto N’awlins during Mardi Gras. After all, it isn’t the middle of summer!

  3. 3 | February 20, 2012 11:19 pm

    @ John Difool:
    I’d rather Occupy Bourbon Street.

If memory serves, Bourbon Street was originally named Craps Street due to the pervasive gambling there, and the dice game of Craps was introduced by someone named Johnny Crapeaux. This could be urban legend, though.

Damn that’s a nice video. My kind of music there!

Boobs & beer just make things even better. :)

Go a week before. The parades are just starting, school hasn’t let out, and the crowds are tolerable.

    @ Bunk X:

Never been to ‘Nawlins and Bourbon street. However I have been to Beale Street in Memphis on a Saturday night and that was pretty wild too. Probably not close to ‘Nawlins wild but some folks say it’s a distant second.

I went there back in ’02 and had a marvelous time with the wife. Felt safe, there were cops on every corner and didn’t see any problems of any sort. Got to see B.B. King play a few sets and even shared a few pitchers of beer with Sid Vicious (The former wrestler)and his lady friend.

Great food and awesome live music I would love to go back.

Not sure if it was ’70′s and early ’80′s Times Square bad at one point but if it was I didn’t experience it.

Been there, done that, back in 1989. Honestly wasn’t all that impressed. But hey, each to their own I guess.

    Wiki on craps:

The game, first known as crapaud (a French word meaning “toad” in reference to the original style of play by people crouched over a floor or sidewalk).

Burgundy Street was formerly known as Craps Street.

    Damn! Love it.

Not Dixieland, but some nice jazz here, with Chuck Mangione, Don Cherry, Maynard Ferguson, Al Hirt, Dizzy Gillespie and Sarah Vaughn performing Take The A Train. What a collection of talent.

Statement by The Heartland Institute on Gleick Confession:

    Money quotes:

Gleick’s crime was a serious one. The documents he admits stealing contained personal information about Heartland staff members, donors, and allies, the release of which has violated their privacy and endangered their personal safety.

An additional document Gleick represented as coming from The Heartland Institute, a forged memo purporting to set out our strategies on global warming, has been extensively cited by newspapers and in news releases and articles posted on Web sites and blogs around the world. It has caused major and permanent damage to the reputations of The Heartland Institute and many of the scientists, policy experts, and organizations we work with.

A mere apology is not enough to undo the damage.

We are consulting with legal counsel to determine our next steps and plan to release a more complete statement about the situation tomorrow. In the meantime, we ask again that publishers, bloggers, and Web site hosts take the stolen and fraudulent documents off their sites, remove defamatory commentary based on them, and issue retractions.

    @ doriangrey:
I was there in ’87 and ’89. Stayed at the Radisson a few blocks from the FQ, had a great time. Hit it on a road trip from Houston a few years before that. Saw a contortionist girl who took my cigarette and smoked it with her stomach.

    @ mfhorn:
When I was a muddling trumpet player, Al Hirt was my idol. I practiced his riffs, and only pulled off one, but it stopped the band.
I was too young to appreciate or understand what Louis Armstrong did, and Maynard Ferguson was an ugly stuntman who played the balloon.

    @ Bunk X:

Al Hirt was a great, for sure. And what can you say about Armstrong? I like Maynard, though. Sure, he tended to showboat with those insane notes- who needs to play a ‘double ‘c”?-, but he could play some beautiful stuff, too. Look for ‘Offering of Love, part 1′ and he did one of the nicest versions of ‘Over the Rainbow’ I’ve ever heard (the one from 1955).

Others I enjoy: Rafael Mendez, Herb Alpert, Eric Miyashiro (sp?), Arturo Sandoval & Wayne Bergeron

  18. 18 | February 21, 2012 12:19 am

    @ mfhorn:
I had three Herb Alpert songbooks. That’s where my head was at back then. I played a 1930s vintage silver plated Velvetone trumpet that was my grampa’s. I still have it.
I could hit B and C and sometimes D above the staff before veins started popping.

HI left an out for Gleick to totally faked the anonymous e-mail and admit he’s a liar. If he knows whats good for him he’ll take those lumps or at least get a good lawyer who knows how to stack a jury in the defendants favor.

I think Chucky thinks now that he’s playing for the other team that he’s now become untouchable because everyone knows Democrats don’t go to jail.

However, he thinks he’s playing for the other team as a star receiver while his team mates are perfectly fine with keeping him on the bench pulling water-boy duty.

If he self-immolates over this I doubt most of the left will even give a damn……hell, most will have a good laugh over it as will we.

16 vacations in three years for the poor, over-worked First Family. And not just any vacation, but vacations to the toniest places, with the “best” people. This time it is Aspen, Colorado for skiing. Poor little Obamas! Damn, but unless you count time off sick as a vacation, I haven’t had any vacations in that period of time. I certainly haven’t gon eoff to some swank resort and partied with the real 1%. And the Occupests eat this shit up. They love their Sun King, and his beauteous Michelle Antionette. The Republicans should have a field day with this shit, but I suspect that they won’t. Certainly not if Romney is the nominee, though that is looking less likely as the weeks go by.

    from Hillbuzz
something to make you go hmmmmm

(a long post but good points)

One of the absolute dumbest things the Republican Party continues to do is allow gay men to remain closeted when holding or seeking elected office — whenever something like the Babeu outing happens, I wish more than anything that the rest of the gay Republicans would just all come out together, on the same day, and completely destroy the Tolerant Left’s ability to pick them off one by one when it’s politically and strategically beneficial to the Democrat Party.

Like it is right now, when Democrats decided to bring Babeu’s dirty secrets to light as a way to discredit his testimony related to the Fast & Furious operation (timed perfectly for this bombshell to drop at the exact moment national attention’s turning to Arizona because of the upcoming primary there).

Democrats have a file on every gay man in the Republican Party ranks. There are pictures. There’s video. Democrat strategists coordinate with the elite, agenda-driven media to out gay Republicans when it can create whatever scandal is needed in that moment in time to serve the Tolerant Left’s agenda. Most of these guys are being actively blackmailed by the DNC — so that when push comes to shove on some important vote, Democrats know they can call up these men and tell them they either vote against their party and constituents, or Democrats will out them in spectacular fashion and cause a big, embarrassing, life-ruining scene.

Democrats sit on information they have about gay Republicans for YEARS and YEARS, and only detonate the scandals when need be. These are aces the DNC keeps in reserve for when they are most needed — and the Republican Party truly earns its “Party of Stupid” nickname for not addressing the fact this keeps happening.

Gay Republicans currently in office like Senators Lindsey Graham and Mark Kirk and Congressman Aaron Schock need to just come out already. Former gay office holders like Governor Charlie Crist and Senator Trent Lott need to come out too. (woah, didn’t see that coming) I’m sure there are a number of lesbians in the GOP political ranks, too, but I’ve never known who any of they are. Watch Republicans who every now and again break ranks to be heralded as “bipartisan!” by stabbing the GOP in the back on certain votes — and more likely than not you’ll see a pattern where Graham, Kirk, Schock, and other guys mysteriously side against their constituents and the Republican Party line seemingly out of the blue.

It’s not so out of the blue when you start to ask yourself, “Was this an instance where these guys voting the way Democrats wanted because Democrats threaten to out them if they don’t do what the DNC says?”.

The truth is, most voters don’t give a damn if these guys are gay or not. But they do end up caring when these guys are dragged out of the closet and exposed as liars, or are caught doing something terrible because they stupidly believed they could get away with it so long as they kept in the good graces of their blackmailers.

The Party of Stupid, forever earning its name…while Democrats keep building their files on these people and picking up the phone to tell them how they need to vote on important issues lest they become the next Larry Craig or Paul Babeu.
