Obama and Putin – two petty tyrants living in a house of mirrors

The Knish gives the real lowdown between the Obama-Medvedev open mic incident of the other day. This is the second open mic incident that Obama has been involved in this year (previously he and Nicolas Sarkozy engaged in some Netanyahu bashing) and each time he has displayed his incredible arrogance and condescension. If he wins reelection – we have nobody to blame but ourselves. Give him a second term, and you will not recognize this country in 2016.

by Daniel Greenfield

For a man so in love with the technology of image, the camera, the microphone and the teleprompter, the leader of the increasingly less free world has a natural tendency to put a little too much faith in it. This is the second time that an open microphone has let Obama down, the first time it recorded him stabbing an ally in the back, the second time it recorded him stabbing a few dozen more in the back.

Medvedev, whose bosom buddy just managed to cling to power with a stolen election and brutal suppression of protests, surely understands how O feels. Photo ops with tigers and sunken treasures, not to mention skiing, martial arts, and even rap, did not keep the Big P in smooth with the Russian public when the economy headed south.

Vladimir Putin didn’t have any racial guilt to ladle on the voters that might get them to overlook the mansions, the corruption and the abuses of power. But the average American voter, like the Russian voter, is more interested in the meat and potatoes, not to mention the gasoline, than in mystical allusions to the power of history. If Putin at times seemed bent on passing himself off as a new czar and Obama as a new savior, the crown and halo were shattered by the economy.

Putin’s had tightened control over Russia to an extent that the Obamas and the Warrens could only fondly dream of in their fondest federalist fantasies. And it’s easier to steal elections when you don’t have to kowtow to a bunch of provincial interests and take the complaints of bible and gun owners seriously. But much like Putin and Ahmadinejad, Obama enjoys dim prospects in a straight election. And unlike them, he doesn’t have a military force that will turn up a few million ballots and send the protesters straight to the hospital, if not to the morgue.

Obama likes being a democrat, it’s just the democracy part that he doesn’t much care for

Obama likes being a democrat, it’s just the democracy part that he doesn’t much care for. And while his diplomacy is generally underwhelming, a mutual dislike of elections proved to be a popular bonding topic with Medvedev, the human face of the regime. But if Medvedev really thought that Obama was serious about needing more space because of an election, he hasn’t been paying much attention to American politics.

[.....]

If Obama is jettisoning Eastern Europe, it’s because he thinks it doesn’t matter. The sage wisdom is that the future is in the Middle East and the Pacific Rim. Russia is full of pale men and so is Eastern Europe. A man who thinks that there’s a language known as “Austrian” can’t exactly be expected to tell them apart or to care. Not when there are more exciting places to be, like Beijing or Dubai.

When it comes to Russia, Obama can’t see the point. When the Berlin Wall fell, Obama was busy completing the final leg of his prolonged education and adolescence while minoring in racial careerism. If he was even busy paying attention to people with funny names like Yeltsin or Gorbachev, it was while smoking blunts and laughing at how funny the syllables of their names sounded in his mouth.

Obama cares about as much as Russia, as he does about the UK

Obama cares about as much as Russia, as he does about the UK. If their leaders meet up with him, he’ll shake hands, nod intently while thinking of what to order for lunch, and make the same vague statements that he makes on every occasion. So long as they, unlike a certain impertinent Jew from Jerusalem, don’t call him out on his arrogance or stupidity, his handlers will be able to chalk it up as another successful bit of international diplomacy.

There’s a reason that Obama gets along reasonably well with Sarkozy and Cameron, they’re all vain, shallow men who imagine themselves standing at the wheel of history. When Sark and Cam want to drag Obama into a war, all they have to do is appeal to his ego. That’s how we wound up bombing Libya, and if we ever get around to bombing Syria, it will be because our allies come equipped with the same weapon with which Perseus slew the Gordon Medusa. A mirror.

[.......]

Signaling to Medvedev that he’s willing to give away the country store if Russia just flies under the radar until after the election would be contemptible, but it’s actually worse than that. Obama would give away the country store now if Putin just asked. What’s even worse is that Putin sees no need to ask. This administration has made it painfully clear that its only foreign policy is reactive and that its spheres of interest lie nowhere near the former Warsaw Pact. Moscow does not see itself tussling with Washington D.C. When Putin grinds his teeth in the night and the boys in uniforms draw up their plans, it isn’t the American capital they worry about, it’s London.

In the Post-American World ruled by the teleprompter and the trending topic, nothing that Obama says actually matters

In the Post-American World ruled by the teleprompter and the trending topic, nothing that Obama says actually matters. His only power is over American allies, and only those allies who are willing to endure him and listen to him. And that is a diminishing number. The reset button has been pushed, but ‘reset button’ was misspelled to read overload, a misspelling that seems altogether accurate these days when American influence and the free world have been overloaded by the burden of their own follies.

Obama’s hush hush chat with Medvedev wasn’t just about promising to give the bear Eastern Europe on a platter if the beast would just hold his appetite until after election day, it was about a conniving liar who was using us as a pretext in whatever game he was playing. Maybe the American public should care more about the missile shield, but Obama knows they don’t. An administration which is still clinging to the wildly unpopular skunk of ObamaCare while sneering at the hoi polloi who drive, instead of get driven about, is not too worried what Des Moines will think of the missile shield.

[......]

The only thing that Obama really needs from Russia is for the reformed reds to avoid causing him any problems. The last thing he wants while boasting about the road that we traveled with him is a 3 AM phone call. As far as he’s concerned, the bear can do what it wants, so long as it doesn’t bite at an inconvenient time. That makes the tradeoff a fairly simple one. Russia avoids creating a crisis until after election day and in return they will get the same charming fellow in the Oval Office who won’t care what happens afterward to all the small country with funny names.

Ever since the Caliph of Chicago made it to the White House, the old game has gone from the backlots of Oz park to the world stage

It’s the Chicago way. You scratch my back and I won’t look too closely into those shady land deals or the suspicious deaths. Ever since the Caliph of Chicago made it to the White House, the old game has gone from the backlots of Oz park to the world stage, but it hasn’t really changed much, just gotten bigger. Moscow, which is the Chicago of Russia, where payoffs and legbreaking are the only form of law that matters, understands how to play the game. They also know a punk when they see one.

It’s a sad testament to the Republic that these days our political system has converged with the Russian one. Some twenty years after the Soviet Union fell, the American and Russian leaders have a good deal in common. They both oversee mafia states that spend money wildly for their 1 percent who are in power or close to those who are, while playing class warfare games with business titans when they aren’t hitting them up for cash.

[......]

Obama and Putin are both petty tyrants living in a house of mirrors, czars of their own egos, corrupt and corrupting forces that hang around the necks of two great nations. They don’t quite understand each other, though both are lawyers and bag men for their respective syndicates, neither do they respect each other. But they both know how to play the game.

There are differences between Putin and Obama.

    Putin is Pro free Market.
Obama believes in a command and control economy.

    Putin is a Rightwing Nationalist.
Obama is a 3rd World Liberation Transnationalist.

    Putin loves his country.
Obama views his own country as evil.

    We know about Putin’s past.
We don’t know anything about Obama’s past.

That said, I think the Russians have dirt on Obama.

It’s a sad day when Russia’s president is more Capitalistic than America’s. Am I in an alternate universe?

Putin is a KGB thug but at least he loves Russia. Obama loves nothing but Socialism.

  4. 4 | March 28, 2012 12:17 pm

    @ Speranza:

Putin understands Free Market Capitalism better than Obama. He learned the lesson of the Soviet Union. Obama seems hell bent on repeating it.

That is a Pat Buchanan principle (i.e. let the Russians do as they will with Eastern Europe.)
Betrayal of our allies in Eastern Europe is a nonstarter.

If Obama is re-elected, I am afraid that he will show us all how flexible he can be about such things. Once he has no more elections to worry about, the gloves come off for real. I dread a second Obama term.

That’s not a Pat Buchanan principle, its the truth. We are broke and overstretch. We are going to have to decide, what is our interests and who we can defend. Personally, I say Arm Poland to the teeth. When people are well armed no one messes with you.

We can’t protect everyone. Americans are war weary and tired. Its reality. Plus we are broke.

the sultan is showing a misunderstanding of russian politics and what putin’s goals are by referring to him as a ‘petty dictator.’

a dictator…sure, i can go with that. petty, certainly not.

putin is attempting to recover russia from the massive economic collapse that they saw in the 90-00′s. a blow out so large that americans would have a very very difficult time comprehending the scope and fallout. the economic destruction was so large that the military fell into total disrepair and russia’s hegemony even over their sphere fell.

putin is working on fixing he economy and regaining russia’s spot as one of the top dogs both economically and in power projection.

“Medvedev, whose bosom buddy just managed to cling to power with a stolen election and brutal suppression of protests,”

just managed to cling to power is incorrect. putin’ party gets 60-70 percent of the vote no matter who they run because they are a national unity party that contained what were many other small parties. the electorate really had no real choice: putin or a communist. not much of a pick. this isnt like dems v repubs here. maybe if the sultan could get past the howling headlines and actually talk to a few russians and read the internal papers he would have worded the above differently.

medvedev’s and putin’s actions in georgia were justified. georgia launched an offensive against south ossetia. russian peacekeepers were place between them and then they were attacked by the georgians. the russians were in there to keep the georgians from rolling over the south ossetians and to avert a massacre of ethnic russians in the area. yes, even russians need protected from massacre once in a while.

as for supporting islamo-fascists? where is this occurring above and beyond what we in the US have been doing? does the support of russia for the cypriotic/israeli energy concern in the med against the turks mean anything to you? and i dont care if they arm the syrians because that means killing more al-queda terrorists. the same al-qeda that is at war with us is in syria and WE the americans are on al-qeda’s side!

What bothers people is how “Hispanic”—formerly considered one of the nonwhite grievance constituencies—has suddenly become qualified by the grievance constituency industry.

The term “white Hispanic” was seen nowhere until this current fake controversy. It has suddenly burst upon the scene like the rockets in a Fourth of July finale, in order to try and sustain the “white racist killing innocent black teen” narrative.

It is the dishonesty of the sudden creation of this new subcategory by the grievance constituency industry that has people pissed off. It is reminiscent of the incident last year where a “gay football league” in Seattle refused to let some self-identified bisexuals play—despite the “B” for “bisexual” being an important component of the LGBT alphabet soup—because “they weren’t gay enough.” It is “white Hispanics” suddenly being “not Hispanic enough” that has people commenting.

I do agree, this whole Trayvon Martin thing is just an excuse to distract people from Obama’s failings. Its designed to cause tensions. They wanted an incident to take advantage of. Notice no charges against the Black Panthers for making death threats?

i have a term for this sort of thing:

there is high-latin--spanish/euro orgin and culture

and low-latin--which is some high latin base mixed with native indian and black culture form south america and former african slaves.

i use high and low like it is used in chritianity. high church meaning catholic and episcopalian traditions form wayyyy back and low meaning a newer type like the first church of the risen savior all gospel people’s church.

or like in german language, there is high german and low german

high/low is not meant as praise or as derogatory term

You’ll see in 15 years when your kids will not talk to you or even phone you. You’ll get a text. Their boyfriends(girls?) will get breakup texts. They and their friends will gossip endlessly. Like here, arguments will rage and roar. All without ever looking anyone in the eye. You’ll learn to hate that.

ya know what…i wonder if this same discussion happened when the telephones were being put in?

his actions in georgia were justified. georgia launched an offensive against south ossetia. russian peacekeepers were place between them and then they were attacked by the georgians. the russians were in there to keep the georgians from rolling over the south ossetians and to avert a massacre of ethnic russians in the area. yes, even russians need protected from massacre once in a while.

Not entirely true there CW, South Odessa was part of Georgia and was in the process of seceding from Georgia. Yes, south Georgia was primarily ethnic Russian, but Georgia wasn’t engaging in ethic cleansing, they were trying to keep South Odessa a part of Georgia.

There would have been no massacre of ethnic Russians other than in the sense that it was the ethnic Russian majority that was actively fighting for independence. Russia didn’t step in to keep the peace, Russia stepped in to help South Odessa gain their independence from Georgia.

It was a Georgian internal affair, Russia responded to requests from the South Odessa ethnic Russian community for assistance. While I am not particularly happy about that, it would be difficult to claim that Russia had no legitimate business doing so.

An apt analogy would be if the Mexican/Hispanic majority of New Mexico attempted to secede from the United States and when the United States attempted to prevent that secession the Mexican/Hispanic majority in New Mexico requested and received military assistance from Mexico.

    Say what?

If this guy rescued a baby from a house fire, he’d be described as “Hispanic.” Period.

I don’t have ANY problem with the term -- I have a problem with the fact that the only reason the word “white” is involved is because they’re trying to say it’s a “white-on-black” hate crime.

As a traditional “white,” I’m offended because it’s demeaning to me.

I don’t believe in “group identity” as a basis for anything.

I do agree, this whole Trayvon Martin thing is just an excuse to distract people from Obama’s failings. Its designed to cause tensions. They wanted an incident to take advantage of. Notice no charges against the Black Panthers for making death threats?

It has to implode on them sometime soon. In a way the Dem ‘minority police’ are eating their own.

I asked my ‘Hispanic’ Mexican American painter yesterday if he’d heard about this. When he said yes I warned him that he was next to become one of ‘us’. He said he was one of us when his mom married a Spanish guy. Too funny.

Now that I think about it, the song “Latin from Manhattan” to which I link in #60 is an extremely early poke at the concept of “race/ethnic authenticity.”

    What is the song? The introduction of a “great Spanish dancer”—of whom Jolson says, “…but somethin’ about her is making me doubt her; I think I remember the kid;

    She’s a Latin from Manhattan
You can tell by her manana
    She’s a Latin from Manhattan
    And not Havana
Though she does the rhumba for us
    And she calls herself Dolores
She was in a Broadway chorus
    Known as Susie Donohue
She can take a tamborine and whack it
But to her it’s just a racket
She’s a hoofer from Tenth Avenue
    She’s a Latin from Manhattan
    Just a Forty-Second Streeter
    She’s a Latin from Manhattan,
    Senorita Donohue

Nowhere is her dancing—or her professional imposture—impugned. Her fakery is exposed, but her skill still respected, and celebrated with the production number.

Think about that for a minute; how 80 years ago we had a culture which was bent on respecting people regardless of background for the skills they displayed, instead of trading on the cheap currency of supposed race or ethnicity.

Why does that term bother so many Conservatives? We exist and are the majority of Hispanics. I don’t get why it is bothering some Conservatives.

Personally, I have never encountered the term until the trevon incident. I thought it a term coined by the MFM or race hustlers to gin trevon’s shooting into an incident racial discrimination. I do not think about people that way.

Though perhaps by design I am starting to since race is being thrown into our faces so often, so hard, and in so strident a one sided way. obama, holder, the dimms and assorted black race hustlers have been very effective in prompting me to reassess my thoughts on race. They would not like the conclusions that I am arriving at based on their actions.

Their design incorporates several sustainable elements, including: reclaimed windows, beetle-kill lumber, solar power and a composting toilet.

“It’s just a five-gallon bucket that you put peat moss and sawdust in,” Smith said. “You’d be surprised how well it works and how much it doesn’t smell.”

Finally I would deduce where they were at and show up un-announced. Oh yeah they were par-ty-ing the night away with beer or what ever they could get their hands on. Momma was always ‘de-lighted’ with them when this happened. Very ‘de-lighted’. ;)

See the difference between boys and girls?
A daughter would have texted that to you and said she was at some friends house.’ Cll u in the am mom’ Then you spend all night trying to find which ‘friend’ cuz she won’t answer. She shows up in the afternoon well rested and ready to fight. And she does.
That’s why boys are easier. You can hit them without guilt or repercussion.

Plus the boys usually aren’t bright enough to realize you’re going to be pissed about them wrecking the car, they figure you, like them, will be to fascinated with all the gory details.

Oh and lets not forget all the half-truths with how the accident happened. You are right they do think you will be just ‘fascinated’ with how it happened and everytime they were ‘never at fault!’ Like the car had a mind of it’s own and it just ‘happened’.

    @ Rodan:
One thing to keep in mind, Rodan, is that in providing arms, missile shields, and military assistance to Eastern Europe (and to Israel, too), ask where is most of that money spent? Right at home in the USA, with defense contractors, and other suppliers, and in salaries for the additional military personnel needed.

Money that’s not being pissed away on the Left’s feel-good crap.

White Hispanic has existed. I am one. The fact that the Left denied my existence and now admits it is ironic. The fact the Right is now upset at the admission of that existence is what is irking me.
This really gave the Right a potential to make allies in the Hispanic community. But instead we are being pissed on. I know you don’t mean any bad intention, but I am telling you that many White Hispanics don’t get the Right’s offense to that term.
Imagine your existence is denied and finally it comes to light. Then the people who are on your side politically are angry at this admission. How would you feel?

Rodan, It’s not term that most on the right are offended by, it’s the damn way the left is using it. We know there are “white” Hispanics (hell I consider most that way), hearing it used that way by the left is really pissing me off.
I sometimes think you can’t wait to find a reason to be pissed at the right (maybe rightly)! But you could be driving people around here away, that agrees with you 80%. JMHO!

I said it once, I’ll said again. This country is borderline disgusting. Thanks to racist, bigoted, extremist, and retarded right-wing of America. People like you are disgusting, sick, demented, and hateful. All the things you falsely accused President Obama of.

you would attack anyone or anything American , if they disagreed in anyway from your narrowminded skewed conservative point of view . And here in your article you prove yourself no better than those perrenial detractors of the US who criticize the dropping of the atomic bomb on Japan to end WW2 ,
You’re a disgrace . and like your fellows would tear down America so long as conservatives are the last ones styanding . Your kind of thinking brought this country to the edge of default most recently . So for those like you it is revisionism and IGNORANCE that play into your pathetic repertoire of screeds , accusations and aspersions , even to the denigration of your own country so long as it props up your partisan agenda . What will you do next ? Slander those who died on the Normandy Beaches ? Your article turns my stomach ….shame on you .

The GOP machine, like you, has fabricated so many lies about Obama that every evil that has ever taken place in the last 40 years is now attributed to Obama or some conspiracy Obama has supposed to have orchestrated. The GOP is nothing but a disgusting deliberate lying slanderous propaganda machine that is out to destroy not just Obama or the Democratic Party, but the entire country. The GOP has become so EVIL – no one believes their lies any more and no one trusts their party or their leaders. You are simply unbelievable!

Yep, and if you notice, Obama hasn’t tried to abolish our government or create a collective labor authority over this one.

Instead, he’s accepted more money from big banks than anyone else and has helped to enrich them with tax money.

He’s a corporatist, not a Marxist. Marx would be speaking out against him if he lived today.

Saying you lived in a Muslim country doesn’t make you a Muslim. Quoting from the Quran doesn’t make you a Muslim. Saying that MaCain never spoke about President Obama’s Muslim Faith (but left out “because I’m not a Muslim” which followed it) doesn’t make President Obama a Muslim. He is a Christian.

George W. just about destroyed the country. If you remember correctly he added 3 Trillion dollars to the debt, he signed the affordable housing act, and the community reinvestment act (leading to the housing downfall). He was responsible for “no child left behind” (hows that working out for ya).

He wrote more regulations, pass bigger government. Obama didn’t. But that’s something you racists want to forget!

Anyone who calls Obama “fraud” is without doubt is a disgusting racist! I think the facts are obvious. The racist right hates having having black people in the White House. This is a hard-core fact. Why else are they STILL lying about his birth certificate?

His birth certificate is REAL! He IS from Hawaii,You disgusting racists. The only record that Obama is required to release to prove his eligibility for office has been released. The birth certificate was generated and certified by the Director of Health of the state of Hawaii. It is hard evidence of his birth in the United Staes and would be accepted by any court in the land.

Not one person has disproved this fact. Not one. Any other records that can be provided would do nothing to “identify” who he is, and would be used purely for opponents to sift through and dig up dirt, but would have nothing to do with proving identity. He is not required to release those records and I don’t blame him one bit for not doing so.

I’m sick and tired of you hateful scumbags calling this man a fraud. HE IS NOT A FRAUD, YOU PEOPLE ARE JUST DESPICABLE LIARS WHO CAN’T STAND THAT A BLACK MAN IS IN THE WHITE HOUSE!!!

That’s what you call this act of traitorism? Offering concessions? Are you NR becoming like FOX that is sliding over to the dark side? This fictional account of Obama sticking his head up Russia’s a$$ and selling out his country is disgusting and makes me very angry. Why didn’t he let Osama go? Huh? Answer that one! Why is he knocking the hell out of Al Qaeda? Huh? Answer that one! It’s sickening accusing this president of being a traitor. He wants to wait until after his re-election to discuss the Missile Defense System. Big deal! You Republicans are desperate to pin something on the president. You’re tired and weary from your Etch A Sketch nominee. So you make up CRAP!
