I love the desert Southwest, and wish I could spend more time there. It has been a few years since I have been able to visit.
We timed our wedding so that we could spend part of our honeymoon in Albuquerque for the balloon festival. I have a painting that I did from a photo I took at Petroglyph National Monument from our honeymoon hanging in my living room.

Yes, it is fantastic!
They had nearly 1000 there the 2 times we have gone. There are vendors. They allow vistors near the balloons as they are being set-up. In the mornings they have mass assentions. In the evenings they may have fireworks, or with the balloons teathered to the ground they would coordinate and run the burners at they same time so hundreds of balloons would all glow at once.
Plus if you want a break from balloons there is so much else to see and do nearby.

We wanted to try a hot air balloon ride at the festival. It was out of our budget.
OTOH, as the next best thing, the owners of the Lazy Boy Chair shaped balloon needed help, so we helped crew it and were treated to heck of a ride through ABQ chasing it in the back of their pick-up.
Good times. We have not talked about that in a while, I will have to remind my wife about it when she gets home from work. I am sure it will bring a smile to her face.

The “ballon people” said that ABQ has a weather phenomenon they called “the box”. This is where the winds are about 180 degrees apart at different altitudes. When it was working, and we did see this happen, after traveling some distance in one direction they could hit the burners, gain about 500 feet and almost return in the direction they just came from.
The ABQ balloon festival is also different from others I have attended in that they allowed the general public in among the balloons as the crews were setting up. Usually that area is fenced off.
