SpongeBob‘ Mushroom Discovered in the Forests of Borneo

ScienceDaily (June 15, 2011) — Sing it with us: What lives in the rainforest, under a tree? Spongiforma squarepantsii, a new species of mushroom almost as strange as its cartoon namesake.

Its discovery in the forests of Borneo, says San Francisco State University researcher Dennis Desjardin, suggests that even some of the most charismatic characters in the fungal kingdom are yet to be identified.

Shaped like a sea sponge, S. squarepantsii was found in 2010 in the Lambir Hills in Sarawak, Malaysia. It is bright orange — although it can turn purple when sprinkled with a strong chemical base — and smells “vaguely fruity or strongly musty,” according to Desjardin and colleagues’ description published in the journal Mycologia.

What cemented its moniker, however, was the fungus’ spongelike appearance and its ability to return to its original size after being squeezed.

When it’s wet and moist and fresh, you can wring water out of it and it will spring back to its original size,” explained Dennis Desjardin, a researcher at SFSU. “Most mushrooms don’t do that.”

Desjardin and his colleagues published their findings in a paper called “Spongiforma squarepantsii, a new species of gasteroid bolete from Borneo” that was published online in the journal Mycologia on May 10, 2011.

Born 71 years ago today as Robert Allen Zimmerman, Bob Dylan may be the most prolific American poet and song writer alive today. His music spans the spectrum of folk, protest, ballad, country, gospel and rock ‘n roll. Heavily influenced by folk balladeers Woody Guthrie and Pete Seeger, Dylan became a regular on the Greenwich Village scene in the early 60′s. In 1965 he performed his live first electric set at the Newport, Rhode Island Folk Festival and was booed off the stage after 3 songs. The folk/protest crowd felt that Dylan had betrayed their movement and sold out to the pop culture which they despised. This was a liberating moment for Dylan who ventured on to write and record in many different genres.

In September 1999 I took the family to see Bob Dylan and Paul Simon when they performed in Austin. It was a great show with Paul Simon leading off. At the end of Simon’s set, Dylan came out and jammed with Simon on The Boxer. At the end of Dylan’s set, Simon came out and jammed with Dylan on Like a Rolling Stone.  The show was just spectacular. The next day the music editor of The Austin American Statesman wrote a somewhat critical article saying that “Dylan should never play lead guitar”. That editor quite obviously didn’t understand that Dylan’s musical and lyrical style is distinctly discordant and is part of makes Dylan… Dylan.

Happy Birthday, Bob and I wish you many more.

Defective Joy Gene

Study Finds Germans Incapable of Enjoying Life

By Maria Marquart

With low unemployment and solid economic growth, things are going better than ever for Germans. But a new study shows they’re practically incapable of enjoying it. Not only do they find it difficult to cut loose and experience pleasure, but their “joy gene” is broken, researchers say

At a certain point, Sven just lost it. Other members of the discussion group had gone into great detail about how they spent their after-work hours with their companions and enjoyed the end of the day. “That’s great for you!” Sven fired back to one speaker. “But first one needs the chance! My boss often plops something on my desk right before it’s time to clock out, and when I arrive home late, my wife is pissed off because she was forced to take care of our kid and the housekeeping by herself.” By that point, he adds, all thoughts of a relaxing evening have vanished.

If anything can comfort Sven, it’s the fact that he isn’t alone with this problem. The 36-year-old took part in a study released this week by Rheingold, a market-research and consultancy institute based in Cologne, which found that 46 percent of Germans say they are increasingly unable to enjoy anything due to the stress of everyday life and the feeling of being constantly reachable. The difficulty was even more pronounced among the study’s younger participants, 55 percent of whom claimed to feel they have lost their ability to feel good.

Whether it’s with food, alcohol, vacation or relaxing — Germans apparently don’t have the leisure to enjoy things. In fact, they can’t even let go when they’re having sex. According to the researchers, the bottom line is: “Our joy gene is increasingly defective — we’ve forgotten how to enjoy ourselves.”

Work Before Play

The results conform to the image that many Europeans have of Germans in this era of economic crisis as self-denying overachievers who can’t even turn off the fun-brakes when vacationing at the beach. The positive image that they enjoyed during the 2006 soccer World Cup in Germany seems gone.

“At that time, Germans really radiated a zest for life,” says Rheingold psychologist Ines Imdahl. “But this mood shifted beginning in 2008.” The problem, she believes, is that Germans feel weighed down by the ongoing European debt and currency crisis. “It’s more than simple complaining,” she adds. “People have the feeling that we have to shoulder the entire crisis here.”

But the Germans aren’t just burdened with the crisis. The main thing standing in their way is their own perfectionism. During hours of individual and group interviews, the researchers analyzed how 60 subjects felt pleasure. They also scrutinized the results of a representative survey of 1,000 men and women commissioned by the liquor companies Diageo and Pernod Ricard.

Among survey respondents, 81 percent said that they experience pleasure best when they have managed to achieve something first. “As the saying goes, business before pleasure,” said 61-year-old female participant Wiltrud.

Pleasure Pressure

But this maxim doesn’t seem to serve the Germans well — they even feel burdened by the pressure to enjoy things. “People often told us that they would come home after a stressful day, but were unable to even say what they’d accomplished,” Imdahl reported. “And then the people around them say, ‘Hey, just relax.’ Enjoyment then turns into an obligation.”

Meanwhile, chances to create a sense of well-being lurk everywhere — a glass of wine, a relaxing bubble bath, or a nice restaurant with delicious food. These, of all things, also rankle the Germans. “This glut of offerings pressures people into thinking, ‘I must enjoy everything’,” Imdahl says.

During the course of the study, the researchers managed to unlock a typically German sequence of steps to enjoyment, which they named “pleasure DNA.” The first step involves the feeling of having earned something. This is followed by preparation for the longed-for pleasure, such as booking a day of wellness treatments. But then comes the biggest hurdle: letting go and clearing the mind. Only when a surprising positive moment supervenes can a fully integrated sense of enjoyment follow.

However, many Germans apparently lack crucial components to this “pleasure DNA.” Though some 91 percent of the study participants said that pleasure makes life worthwhile, only 15 percent could recall moments in which they were able to forget their worries and feel truly happy.

Two-thirds of the respondents imagined that they might arrive at such a feeling by doing something provocative. One example? A motorcyclist reported experiencing delight when he blew exhaust fumes in the direction of a convertible driver as he accelerated at a green light.

The Jealousy Factor

Yet another phenomenon also comes into play in the German culture of pleasure — jealousy of others’ well-being. “Many think, ‘man, how does he do it,’” psychologist Imdahl said. It’s a Teutonic mentality one can also see in the euro crisis. “When we get agitated about the Greeks’ high pensions and ample vacation days, naturally pleasure-jealousy plays a role,” she says. But would Germans rather be Greek? “That doesn’t suit us,” she says.

Perhaps the Germans could never achieve a Southern European kind of ease, but one might think they could at least relax during their most intimate moments. Not true, the study found. The highly personal interviews revealed that Germans can’t even let go during sex. Many reported constantly having film and advertising images run through their minds. “This results in the requirement to cut a good figure even during sex,” Imdahl says. That is, to hold in their bellies instead of enjoying the moment

First off we have the incredible news that apparently Hollywood now has access to top secret facilities and information so they can make sure their new movie Zero Dark Thirty portrays Obama in the correct light.

The good news is I have an early leaked pic of one of the scenes.

But, that isn’t all! They’ve also released the preliminary design of the action figure for this tale of how Osama was finally taken down.

In more Hollywood news, Brad Pitt wants “the Won” to know that his new movie “Killing Them Softly” won’t be anti-Obama. How nice of Brad, I remember all the other times Hollywood stars made sure to let Republicans know that films about them aren’t negative.

This post is a work of parody and should be taken as such, unfortunately the joke in Washington is no longer funny.

Donald Trump forms anti-Obama Super PAC

When Donald Trump was contemplating running for President many Conservatives dismissed it as a publicity stunt. Another element just hates NYers and North Easterners. Well many of these people have egg on their faces. Although he didn’t run for President, Donald Trump has stayed active in politics. Putting his money where his mouth is, Donald Trump is now forming a Super PAC. It’s goal is to defeat The Pharoanic regime.

Sick and tired of the United States looking like a “third world country” and outsiders coming here to “suck the blood out of this country,” quirky developer and TV personality Donald Trump is eyeing a new super PAC to help defeat President Obama.

Presumably, the super PAC would also act to help Mitt Romney, who Trump has endorsed. Money shouldn’t be an issue for the wealthy casino, golf course, resort and real estate developer. And neither should public relations, since Trump is a one-man publicity hound who even toyed with a presidential bid last year.

In an interview with Newsmax TV, Trump voiced anger at OPEC for seeking more than they deserve for oil, and Obama for letting infrastructure fade. But he also expressed high hopes that the nation could turn around, based on tapping home-grown energy sources.

Excerpts from the interview include:

--“If I did one [super PAC] I would show how bad we’re doing as a country, how disrespected we are as a country. I would show people from OPEC, 11 people sitting around a beautiful gold-encrusted table talking about how they are going to continue to rip off the United States.”

–“My super PAC ads would be focused on how outside places and outside things are absolutely sucking the blood out of this country, and this country can’t be great again unless it really starts to generate money.”

Donald Trump is spot on. Foreign interests, particularly Islamic ones, are taking advantage of this nation thanks to Transnationalist in both parties that control Washington. It’s time Americans wake up and realize our nation has been hijacked. I salute Donald Trump for setting up a Super PAC who not only will be dedicated to defeating Obama but also call out the foreign vultures and their agents who are destroying this nation.

I wish we had more people like Donald Trump in politics than people like Obama, McCain, Ms. Graham, the Bush family, Lieberman and the Clinton Crime Syndicate. Hopefully if Obama is defeated in November, Trump keeps the Super PAC around to keep the pressure on Republicans to serve American and not foreign interest. 238 years ago this nation’s forefathers rebelled against a foreign king, it would be a shame to lose this nation to foreign masters. But focus #1, defeat the Pharaoh!

Obama’s extreme appointees – Guest post by Mars

Obama Surrounds Himself With The Most Extreme Appointees In American History
The Western Center for Journalism, a Steve Baldwin Exclusive

Here are some highlights:

The Regulatory Czar – Cass Sunstein

Sunstein was nominated and approved to be Obama’s “Regulatory Czar.” He supports massive gun control and doesn’t believe the 2nd Amendment is an individual right. He has straight out said, “We ought to ban hunting.” While this fruitcake strips Americans of their Constitutional right to own guns, he wants to give rights to animals and has argued that “Animals should be permitted to bring suit…” Naturally, he also supports the “Fairness Doctrine,” the wrongly-named concept which allows the government to regulate the airwaves.

Climate Czar – Todd Stern

Stern has even gone as far as to propose that world powers form an “E8” group, who would meet yearly and dictate environmental policy to the rest of the world. What about national sovereignty? Clearly, Stern feels that’s an outdated concept.

Stern is also the nutcase behind the Cap and Trade proposal which, even an analysis by Obama’s own Treasury Department concluded, would cost American taxpayers up to $200 billion dollars—just what we need for today’s economy!

Science Czar – John Holdren

In his book, Holdren advocates some of the most bizarre and horrifying policy stances imaginable. In the event of a “over-population crises,” Holdren supports “laws requiring compulsory abortion,” government confiscation of new born babies, the “development of a long-term sterilizing capsule that could be implanted under the skin,” and, incredibly, “adding a sterilant to drinking water or stable foods….” as long a livestock would not be affected (as experimentally implemented in India). Holdren wants the government to dictate family size and advocate a “planetary regime,” run by the United Nations. This real life Dr. Frankenstein will be deciding science policy for the United States of America.

National Security Council – Samantha Power

Power is an anti-Israel pseudo intellectual, a strange position given that Israel is our top ally in the Middle East. She holds the view that until Israel allows Palestine to set up a separate state, all the other problems in the Middle East will remain. This, of course, ignores the 1,300 year old war of conquest waged by Islam against the West, most of it occurring long before the modern day Israel/Palestine conflict. She also holds to the conspiratorial view that everything America does in the Middle East – like the Iraq war – is due to Israeli influence.
Advisor, Under-Secretary of Defense for Policy – Rosa BrooksThis genius wrote that Al-Qaeda was just an “obscure group” until America began the war on terrorism, ignoring all the documentation that Al-Qaeda was making plans for rapid growth long before 9/11. Apparently, it’s America’s fault that terrorist groups exist today!

Senior Advisor and Assistant to the President for Public Engagement and Intergovernmental Affairs – Valerie Jarrett

Jarrett is involved with vetting all the extremists Obama has appointed and thus, has to be an extremist as well. For example, she was aware that former Green Czar Van Jones (who withdrew) had a long history of involvement in Communist Party causes, but still said she was “delighted to be able to recruit him into the White House.” She had to have known, because she married into a family with a pedigree of Communist Party involvement. Her father-in-law, Vernon Jarrett, worked closely with Obama mentor and Communist Party leader Frank Marshall Davis in a number of Communist Party front groups during the Cold War years. Valerie married Vernon’s son in 1983 and later became chief of staff for Mayor Richard Daley, where she was a key player in perhaps America’s most corrupt big city political machine. Obama does not go forward with anything without her counsel.

And this is just the tip of the iceberg, follow the link and read it all. There are many, many more. Keep in mind this info is several years old (Elena Kagan wasn’t on the Supreme Court yet) and in the last couple years Obama has only gone forward and added more and more of these kind of fanatics. Also understand, this is only the top people and direct appointees. There are a lot more in all levels under this President. When reading about each of these people, think to yourself, who would they appoint under them?

The irrational obsession

by Speranza ( 60 Comments › )

Melanie Phillips gives us the inside of the irrational hatred that so much of the British ruling classes have for Israel and the inevitable violent outbreaks caused by it.

by Melanie Phillips

On and on it goes, this deranged vendetta against Israel and the Jews that we are not allowed to call by its proper name, on and on with obsessional intensity into ever-more alarming and astonishing bigotry and violence that is even now passing virtually without comment in wider British society.

On Monday night Richard Millett, an Israel supporter who tirelessly records and thus brings to light the venomous anti-Israel bigotry coursing through campuses and elsewhere, was assaulted and racially abused at a meeting of the Palestine Society at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London.

The pretext for this assault was that he refused to stop filming — even though this was a public meeting, and according to him there were others present who were also filming. You can view his footage here.

Last year, another Israel supporter was attacked at SOAS when his cheek was bitten by an anti-Israel demonstrator – an incident which was also filmed. At the subsequent trial, however, the individual being prosecuted was acquitted.

This latest outrage at SOAS occurred a few days after a jaw-dropping edition of HardTalk on BBC TV, in which Sarah Montague interviewed an apparently rabid Israel-hater, Jewish-American Norman Finkelstein.

Giving a platform to this noxious individual was bad enough. But to introduce him, Montague stated the following:

‘American Presidents have long been criticized for being too in thrall to the Jewish lobby. The American Jews influence US foreign policy and that explains Washington’s unwavering support for Israel.’

Now it is possible that she was not asserting this as fact but merely representing the views of such critics in order to introduce the discussion. But she went on to say:

‘So what happens if American Jews fall out of love with Israel? That’s what the Jewish American academic Norman Finkelstein claims is happening … Could he be right? And if he is, what does that mean for Middle East policy?’

[.....]

In other words, the BBC is now peddling the ancient racial libel that the Jews exercise a unique control over the levers of power. And that is unvarnished Judeophobia. On the BBC. Paid for by the British public. The BBC won’t report the Muslim element of paedophile gangs in northern towns, but they will libel the Jewish people by stating a notorious bigoted trope as fact.

The terrifying thing is that the BBC really does seem to believe American Jews control the Presidency. That’s why they treat as a legitimate contributor to public debate an individual whose record is summed up by CAMERA thus:

‘Finkelstein has called for solidarity with Hezbollah, mocked Israel as a “lunatic state,” “an insane state,” and “a Satanic state” bent on war. He labels Jewish leaders involved in Holocaust restitution “gangsters” and “crooks,” terms Holocaust survivor Eli Wiesel “the resident clown of the Holocaust circus.” He calls Israelis “Satanic, narcissistic people” and claims Israel committed a “slaughter, a massacre” in Gaza and “wants war, war and war.”’

With the BBC giving airtime to the kind of anti-Jewish venom that was once confined to neo-Nazis and their ilk, the demons of irrationality about the Jews are once again terrifyingly brainwashing the credulous. And just as in the 1930s, it is the high-minded and the highly educated who are leading Britain into this darkness — under the camouflage of hating the Jewish homeland.

In March, a bunch of luvvies including Emma Thompson, Richard Wilson and Alexei Sayle called for a boycott of Israel’s Habima theatre which has been performing Shakespeare’s Merchant of Venice (oh the irony of it!) in Hebrew at the Globe in London. This was on account of what they described as Israel’s ‘policies of exclusion’ against the Palestinians and its ‘human rights violations and the illegal colonisation of occupied land’.

Dear oh dear — does one laugh or cry at such mindless parroting of demonstrable untruths? Quite apart from the fact that Habima is totally apolitical and a call for such a cultural boycott is, as the author Howard Jacobson put it, Kafkaesque, have these high-minded souls called for a boycott of Lebanon where Palestinians are excluded from citizenship? Have they called for a boycott of Syria where countless thousands have been slaughtered? Have they called for a boycott of Iran for threatening a second genocide of the Jews and jailing, torturing, stoning and hanging its own dissidents, women and gays?

[......]

No, of course not. The only country they want to boycott is the one country in the whole of the Middle East that is a true democracy, that affords human rights to all its citizens, that allows freedom of worship to all religions, that treats women as equals and safeguards the welfare and liberties of gay people – and treats in its own hospitals, alongside its own citizens, Palestinians from these ‘excluded’ territories including those who are trying to murder as many Israeli citizens as possible.

This irrational obsession is madness. It is terrifying. And no-one in the wider community  is saying anything about it.
