Doc Watson was one of the most influential guitar pickers of our time, and he passed away 29 May 2012. Struck blind before the age of 1, he overcame his handicap with hard work and earned talent. Here he is with Chet Atkins (d.2001) and a young Leo Kottke. I’m guessing the vid is from the late 70s.
[Personal gripe: Folks who post these vids on the Utoobage should give some detail in the descriptions. Many do, but too many don't.]
And speaking of personal gripes, it’s time for a big ‘ol honkin’ pickin’ & flickin’ Saturday Night edition of The Overnight Open Thread.

Anyone who thinks Farrakhan and the NOI are a joke needs to read about the “Zebra” murders in California in the 1970′s carried out by the NOI “Death Angels”.

Nope, not a joke. What they may say is uproariously funny, but in a twisted psychotic way. You know that no good can come from those speeches or that world view.

I had the good fortune to see Jeff Healey live in a club setting on at least 2 occasions, and got to meet him. He was quite the party animal.

It’s been a very bad year so far for fans of Appalachian musical styles. Since we lost them both this year, here’s Doc and Earl in better days…
BTW, THAT is the only proper setting to here bluegrass, etc. -- outdoors, in the mountains.
Did I play this before? Insomnia break.

I love the skill and spirit of bluegrass. Must be amazing to hear outdoors in the mountains. Generally I like music played outdoors. It adds nature to the spell.
Does anybody else think that this is a bad name for an bright group of kids who think that they are ultra-cool?

Listening (and attempting to play) bluegrass and the predecessor styles of music (a habit I picked up in college) is what eventually led me to classical music. Acoustic strings is acoustic strings, ya know. But it’s considered an odd transition.
@ Mike C.:
And listening to bluegrass, etc. eventually led to listening to the even older antecedents, Celtic music.

@ Mike C.:
No, they were pork ribs. I ate lunch at the dining facility.
Good morning. Hmmm, nobody here. I wonder if the
Obama Regime has rounded up everybody & shipped
them to reeducation camps?

I keep expecting Khan to walk in and tell me this is Ceti Alpha V…
@ RIX:
Yeah… How about Santa Cruz, Bolivia? Yellow Fever vaccination up to date? OTOH, you can get a beer.
The Dems sent Debbie Wassernman Schultze into Wisconsin

And he probably doesn’t have to drive 75 miles through a sandstorm to get home tonight.
Back in the day when I was young & single The Combined
Insurance Companies offered me a job to head up a division
in Hong Kong. Yeah baby!
So the contract signing day, they switched it to
Saudi Arabia! Someone internally posted for Hong Kong.
Two of my favorite passtimes at the time were drinking &
wenching.
Naturally I turned it down saying “They stone people
there for what I like to do.”
You don’t get many sandstorms 100 klicks from the Amazon jungle.
But I have been through my share of humongous sandstorms in the ME and in China…
@ RIX:
Just do what the Saudis do -- drive over the causeway to Bahrain.
@ RIX:
Here, they just kick you out of the country.
They do execute people for drug trafficking, though.
Mike C. wrote:
If only I knew that at the time.

Well, I’ve had enough fun for one day.

It did work! He got a relpy with VIP passes for
most of the ceremonies.
Never know what you can get just for asking.
@ RIX:
well, like i always say, ” ‘doesn’t hurt to ask”, and “what’s the worst that could happen? they could say ‘no’ but that’s not the end of the world”.
yeah, i know, never said it here, did i? that’s just in the meat world.

most comfortable chair EVER! just got it delivered friday.
Just back from my bike ride.

But, those little girls with the pink helmets & training

That reminds me of a goofy TV commercial from a couple of months back. There’s a guy standing at the top of a hill and cyclists (festooned with their goofy bike hats) are riding down the hill. The guy (with slightly graying hair; maybe mid to late 40′s) says “You know, I used to ride down this hill without a helmet. I took incredible risks those days”. Pathetic. Riding a bike down a hill without a helmet is now considered to be an “incredible risk”. I don’t even know what the ad was for. Maybe Insure or Depends.
