A few days ago, security guards were patrolling the streets near Rome’s Jewish school with metal detectors, searching for possible explosive devices. Rome’s largest synagogue, one of the oldest in the world, today looks like a military outpost, with private guards and policemen at every corner. The Jewish school is also a “sterilized area,” protected by bodyguards and cameras, the windows plumbed with iron grates. I saw the same in the Jewish homes of Hebron and in the schools of Sderot, the Israeli city bombed by Hamas.
The March attack at a Jewish school in Toulouse, which resembled that of Itamar (when an Israeli father, mother and three children were slaughtered in their beds by a Palestinian commando), triggered “an explosion” of anti-Semitic attacks across France. According with the Service de Protection de la Communauté Juive, more than 90 anti-Semitic incidents took place in France only in the 10 days that followed the shooting, which left four people dead. In total, 148 anti-Semitic incidents were recorded in March and April. It’s an anti-Semithic pandemonium totally silenced by the European media.
Anti-Semitism raises again its head in Eastern Europe. During the Holocaust, Europe dispatched its Jews to the gas chambers. I once hosted -- if that’s the right word -- a young man from the Netherlands getting back home from Guatamala who had a stopover at Dulles. Took him around to see the sights. Wanted to see the White House. He was VERY impressed with all the people protesting. Signs about the war in Iraq, Gitmo, etc. They all welcomed him and he was really surprised. Then he said one thing. “I wanted to see George Bush’s house”.
Everybody went quiet. The poor kid looked at me -- “what did I say wrong”.
One of the protester guys -- 70 yrs old if he was a day took pity. “It’s not George Bush’s house. It’s ours”

The White House, however, is prodding federal agencies to meet with CAIR, which has close ties to Islamist groups, such as HAMAS. “There is hundreds of examples of departments and agencies that meet with CAIR on a range of issues,” George Selim, the White House’s new director for community partnerships, told The Daily Caller June 7.
“The [appropriations] committee understands that the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has an existing policy prohibiting its employees from engaging in any formal non-investigative cooperation with CAIR [and] the committee encourages the attorney general to adopt a similar policy for all department officials,” said the committee report accompanying the 2013 Commerce, Justice, Science Appropriations bill, passed in mid-May by the House.
The Justice Department’s IG began investigating the FBI’s contacts with CAIR in March. Spokesman Jay Lerner declined to provide any details about the investigation, but pointed to a short passage in the IG’s semiannual report to Congress, released April 30.
“The OIG is reviewing interactions between FBI field offices and the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR). The review will determine if these interactions were in compliance with FBI policy and guidance that restricts certain interactions with CAIR,” said IG Michael Horowitz.

The late Stephen Jay Gould’s book The Mismeasure of Man deals with all sorts of ways in which people were supposed to be typed and measured; phrenology, skull capacity and shape, the formation of ears and noses and chins, etc. It’s been some time since I read the book, but it’s an eye-opener to see how stereotypes as to what constitutes a “vicious” or “criminal” type, merely on the basis of appearance stereotyping, still exists—and is all traceable back to the pseudosciences of the late 19th century, which also spawned eugenics. (I would add that the invention of “homosexuality” as a phenomenon distinct from “heterosexuality” also dates from this time).
