I stumbled upon this old DoD (not Daedalus…) film, “U.S. ARMY IN BERLIN: TIMETABLE FOR CRISIS – Department of Defense 1962 – PIN 30139 – ROLE OF U.S. ARMY IN BERLIN FROM VE DAY 1945 TO THE CRITICAL SUMMER OF 1961 DURING THE BERLIN CRISIS.”
Enjoy the film!

We're not easily offended and don't want people to think they have to walk on eggshells around here (like at another place that shall remain nameless) but of course, there is a limit to everything.

One of my cousins was one of those Grenztruppen on the East German border (but not Berlin). He was assigned to the western border area because HIS home was near the Polish border. They did not assign locals to guard the border.
He told me those were the worst months of his life.
He never became “friends” with any fellow guards, everyone was rotated on a regular basis.
He never was on guard duty alone.
He could never make friends with the locals, they were afraid of them.
Their own lives were closely watched by the party apparatchiks. Extremely close, censored mail.
Many times guard duty was on bicycle and those bikes got numerous flats. When that happened, both guards had to walk all the way back to the sentry building.
Everyone was given the order to shoot, an escapee or another guard if they tried something “foolish”. I never got around to asking what that last part of the comment meant.
After he did his mandatory Grenztruppe duty he was re-assigned to the regular Volksarmee close to home on the other side of East Germany, as a communications specialist.
When he finally mustered out he was extremely relieved.
After the fall of the wall he was over-joyed. He became an entrepreneur, rewiring and setting up cable systems in apartment buildings. He collected hundreds of old TV antennae for scrap.
Unfortunately, he passed away almost a year later, succumbing to an aneurysm. The emergency services hadn’t caught up with progress fast enough for him, not many people had phones to call in an emergency.
I’ve been meaning to ask this for some time now. Since this thread seems to be really slow, I’ll do it here!
Is there a way for someone to put together a list of suggested/recommended books mentioned on threads? I could go back through all the threads, but time seems to be my enemy lately.
@ Peter:
I think the internet in Kuwait was bought surplus from East Germany.
It shouldn’t take 45 minutes to download a Mark Levin show podcast…
Well, 45 minutes seems pretty fast when you consider that the local Imman’s have to view it, decide that it contains no anti-Islamic subversive dialog and doesn’t personally offend the Prophet (pig piss be upon him).
I’m not offended by it. But I am insulted by the excuses given by the Game of Thrones creative team for using it. It was a definite political overture. If they had just happened to only have a bust of Obama laying around and used it, HBO would have been shut down by the left.
But we know if they had a bust of OBama they would have respected the office and had just one less head on a pike. Or white faced him.
Bring me the head of GWB — HBO

This is just another example of the lefts ideological mantra. Since the End justifies the Means, such ridicule of Bush is 100 percent acceptable, regardless of the hypocrisy which they prove by not also calling for Obama’s head on a pike.
@ darkwords: @ doriangrey:
I have a different take on it. I think the right should embrace it and get a few chuckles and win friends with it. Bush could come out and have some fun with it saying he always wanted a part even if a bit part. And point out in good fun our system of government shines compared to the way inside Game of Thrones. Obama is not worthy to be a former King on the throne
The communist threat to west berlin. I liked the music. Even though you hear it a lot in old footage. It was interesting what footage the film makes put behind the music.
I was in Berlin a few years ago and walking around one could suddenly run into a neighborhood that looked like an architects nightmare and was a dump. Then realize oh, it’s just the communists in East Berlin.
It’s a mental defectiveness to not observe the fruits of communism and socialism compared to democracy and capitalism and not realize the folly. but talk to any lefty today and they want to repeat the folly because they think they can do better than Lenin. Cue in Obama. he is dedicated to making the middle class poor, and become Obama supporters out of spite for their conditions. In the long run everyone loses. Obama Total Government Care will destroy the nation much faster than Global Warming every will.

@ heysoos: yah IMO Jesus would have expressed love in the most dangerous of situations and not pulled out a gun and shot someone.
That someone would tweet Jesus thought it was ok, makes me wonder.
It’s ok to protect oneself, but one also has an obligation to choose a peaceful path in life. Especially in this ever engaging world.
I could carry a gun around in my state if I wanted to. I grew up with firearms, but in the end I think I can just talk my way out of trouble. If not.. well…
I would only engage my firearm if there was active civil unrest. Like during the Rodney King riots. I’ll be armed then. And ready.

The author of Hard Measures had this to say this week….which is why eaglesoars says this is a great book.
Former CIA Counterterrorism Chief: Obama Has Taken Agency Out Of Interrogating Business
The Obama administration has taken the CIA “out of the business” of interrogating high-value terrorists and the lack of data is endangering the U.S. security, according to former CIA counterterrorism chief Jose A. Rodriguez.
If U.S. intelligence or military personnel capture a senior terror leader today, no system is in place or facilities set up where he could be questioned, said the 31-year agency veteran who was awarded several medals for his intelligence work before retiring in 2007.
“We are out of the business of doing that,” he said of terrorist leader interrogations in an interview with the Free Beacon. “We don’t have anywhere to take them. If you capture a high-value target outside the war zone, where [are] you going to take them? They are not taking prisoners in Guantanamo, [and] the black sites have been closed.”
When U.S. special operations forces recently captured a terrorist in Sudan, the only place he could be questioned was aboard a Navy ship at sea, he said.
“So we don’t have anywhere to take them, but even if we did, we are restricted by the Army field manual, so we are basically out of the interrogation business.” The manual restricts all interrogations to tactics outlined under international rules for questioning and treatment of prisoners of war in conventional conflicts.
Rodriguez, author of the bestselling book Hard Measures, also said he and fellow CIA colleagues were disgusted by President Obama’s 2009 speech in Cairo asserting that U.S. officials were guilty of torture for harshly questioning terrorists.
JFK said … if there is one path above all others to war it is weakness & disunity… may the Obama bashing begin.
the thing I bash BO for is not leaving Astan 2 years ago….then to add to that insult, he wants to pay the Talis to quit their fight..naive in the extreme…but his drone-a-thon is okay by me
the donks got us into WW1, then WW2, then Korea, followed by Viet Nam and Yugoslavia…but when GWB took down Hussein, the left howled with indignity, while BO continues the slaughter in Astan for no apparent reason
@ 30 waldensianspirit:That is my idea of it. Once his work was set in motion he made his final sacrifice of himself on earth.
While everyone probably has a different interpretation of the man and the time. I do think he was able t elevate people into a more divine way of thinking.
Watching the US Open online. I’m not sure why sporting events are not more available online. they are sending me constant ads and getting information about me.
If I was golfing there after the cut, I’d get current Playboy playmate Jenny McCarthy to caddie for me. Humorous to talk to and highly distracting to the other golfers and pundits. Plus she could heckle the gallery.
Morgan Hoffman wears bright orange pants to the course. Either he just got off the chain gang or he wants to make sure no one drives a golf ball at him. I suspect the latter maybe from a previous bad experience. Well tiger doesn’t tee up for another hour.

About Obama drone campaign; it’s all cool by me. I do, however, remember when there were attacks on these guys during the Bush administration there was incessant hand wringing over collateral deaths. Have we magically eliminated collateral deaths or is there a conscious decision being made to not report them?
Yeah, I know the answer. It was a rhetorical question.
