Paul Ryan’s selection a victory for the Tea Party/Economic Conservatives

by Rodan ( 213 Comments › )
Filed under Economy, Elections 2012, Mitt Romney, Republican Party at August 12th, 2012 - 2:30 pm

Mitt Romney’s selection of Paul Ryan has done something not seen this election. For the first time since 2010, the Tea Party and Base Conservatives are extremely energized. With the selection of Ryan, Romney has sent a big signal. For the first time since Ronald Reagan, the GOP has a Center-Right Fiscal/Economic Conservative ticket.

The Human Events 2011 Conservative of the Year, Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), will be announced this morning as Mitt Romney’s vice presidential running mate, according to early reports.  Romney will formally announce his choice at a news conference this morning as early as 8:45 a.m.

Reaction from Republicans was swift — and enthusiastic.

“In choosing Paul Ryan, Gov. Romney is signaling he wants to change the course of government, not manage it.  This is the start of an aggressive, ideas campaign!”

So said California’s Republican State Chairman Tom Del Beccaro Friday night, shortly after television news reports strongly suggesting that Romney was planning to name House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) as his vice presidential running mate Saturday morning.  Del Beccaro was hosting a private party of fellow California GOP leaders in his suite at the Burbank Marriott here during the state Republican convention.  To a person, the other party activists were genuinely excited about the 42-year-old Ryan’s selection, and all echoed their chairman’s confidence that this was a first step in what would be a campaign grounded in conservative ideas and change.

“I’m as grassroots as you can get and I’m thrilled about Ryan!” Alameda County GOP Vice Chairman Hugh Busell told Human Events, “He had the courage to say why we needed to eventually change the nature of entitlements such as Medicare, and he could explain it.”

Mitt Romney has turned his back on the Rockefeller/Bush Wing of the Republican party and has embraced the Goldwater/Reagan/Tea Party/Economic Conservative wing of the Republican party. Welcome aboard Mitt to the side of the GOP that knows how to defeat the Progressives. Make no mistake, the selection of Paul Ryan is a victory for the Tea Party over the Establishment.

Compassionate Conservatism is dead and good riddance to that Progressive ideology.

I was afraid that Romney’s veep selection would be weak tea. But Ryan appears to be well steeped in fiscal conservatism.

I don’t think there are going to be any… letting Biden debate would be like letting Barney Franks box.

Bloodbath isn’t even the half of it, on this you can count, the Biden/Ryan debates will leave Biden looking like he’s sing the “Villages” all over again while Barack Hussein Obama get’s mauled in the crossfire.

Who was it during the Primaries that when his opponent refused to debate him debated a cardboard cutout? Ryan should do that if they refuse to allow Biden to debate him.

I think after the Ryan nomination the team Obarky are getting nervous. Ryan is a real opponent, someone armed with the facts.

Same effect as ’08. The base is energized like mad over the VP selection. The top name on the ticket both cycles was perceived to be moderate. The VP slot was clearly further right. Hmmm…you might think that would catch somebody’s attention.

Yup, he did go Tea party with this pick.

Am I the only one not celebrating this? I think Ryan was FAR better in his position in the House. Do you guys trust Boehner in the house without a Ryan in the Budget/Ways Means committee? Romney was supposed to be ‘an economic guru’ -- why select someone else of the same expertise instead of ’rounding out’ the platform.
Whether we like to admit it or not, Romney had our votes just b/c Obama (well, don’t need to go on there). Ryan is NOT going to put anything new in place, and would probably scare the hell out of the ignorant electorate once they hear him. They should’ve been scared all along, but ignorance is bliss for them. Dems will run on ‘Happy Times’ and Romney will lose by a sliver.
I think this was a losing move for Romney and all of us. (since either ryan gets pulled out of office, or we get Obama again -- ich).

    Another Tea Party victory.

  27. 27 | August 12, 2012 3:34 pm

    We dodged a bullet.

Why Christie not picked as Mitt’s VP

New Jersey’s Chris Christie was high on Mitt Romney’s list but refused to resign as governor in order to run, a Romney insider told The Post.

But Christie seems to have no ill will. He endorsed the duo, saying Romney and Rep. Paul Ryan understand the nation’s “economic stagnation” and calling them “uniquely positioned to make the tough choices necessary to confront our fiscal challenges.”

He could be announced as the keynote speaker for the GOP convention “as early as Tuesday,” the source said.

  28. 28 | August 12, 2012 3:38 pm

    @ legacyweapon:

Romney was supposed to be ‘an economic guru”

No, he was sold as a Moderate/Liberal who win win disaffected Democrats. Romney was NOT liked by Economic/Fiscal Conservatives.

Paul Ryan can keep his House seat under Wisconsin law. SO if god forbid they lose, he will still be in the House. Should they win, his buddy Eric Cantor is still there, so Boehner will be held in check.

Ryan is NOT going to put anything new in place

Yes, he energizes the Tea party, Economic Conservatives and can appeal to younger voters.

Per Wisconsin law Ryan can still/run keep his House seat while campaigning as vp. I’m sure he’s actively engaged in finding a suitable replacement to run in his place that would be in the same mold as himself.

Wan’t a Romney fan but he’s our candidate now and i will support him 100%. However his picking Ryan has relived me greatly as far as any doubt or reservations I’ve had about him in the past.

My one big problem with him is of course Romney care, the very program Obamacare is modeled after. I’ve thought that will be the albatross around his neck when it’s brought up during the debates. My other problem is with this, stop saying what works in Mass. doesn’t necessarily work in the other 50 states. It doesn’t work in Mass. either and is billions in the red.

Don’t go down that road, say it was a bad decision you’ve learned from it and have moved along.

Heh. Touching upon an indelicate subject, there is often talk made about the VP candidate being chosen as “assassination insurance” for the President. Kind of ignores the fact that nearly all Presidential assassins and wanna-bes for the past 2 centuries have come from the Left of the spectrum, excluding the few who were just plain nuts.

But Ryan as VP will certainly provide some deterrence for a murderous Leftist who might contemplate an assault upon Mr. Romney.

Now this is interesting, especially this part:

The campaign saw an interesting phenomenon after the Ryan announcement.  Over 30% of the visits came from mobile devices, something the source tells me the campaign has never seen before in this cycle.  It shows that the selection of Ryan may have some significant upside among younger voters who may relate more to Ryan than to Obama, Joe Biden, and the administration that has cratered job prospects for this demographic over the last three years.

A dog & pony show, smoke & mirrors. Morsi sacked them and then made them all presidential cabinet members/advisers. Guess it’s the old saying ” keep your friends close but your enemies closer” except thats not exactly right in this case, this was just showmanship attempting to fool the public he’s in control when this was most likely the military’s idea and they got to pick their own successors.

At any rate Morsi knows who runs the country and it’s the military. This was nothing but theater.

    @ Rodan:

Ryan is a great pick. I’ve been waiting since Reagan for an economically literate politician to emerge anywhere near any ticket. Now we not only have somebody to fill that role, but a guy who is able to articulate it clearly. The Dims have been gleefully frittering about proclaiming that this is what they’ve wanted all along. All I can say is I’m glad to see that this pick has made everyone happy.

4 years ago, Obama ran a campaign promising to be a tax reforming hawk, and now that vision is impossible for him to maintain. So far this year, he has been running on a vision of being a full blown Socialist in the bold tradition of the murkiest nightmares of the Frankfort School, and Romney has been campaigning as the heir apparent to Reagan. Ryan serves to cement that choice for Americans, and while I am not guaranteeing the victory, I can guarantee that at the very least, we are about to have the fight that we’ve been avoiding as a nation for the past 20 years. Banzai!

Schieffer was the loyal Obama foot soldier, getting in all the talking points about Bane, fairness and tax returns. He forgot to ask anything about the Regime’s policy failures, corruption and cronyism. R/R did just fine. Straight forward, honest, “we’re in this for the country”.
