…well for the regular season at any rate. Hard to believe we wait 30 weeks and 17 go by so quickly (I don’t count exhibition, but I did count the playoffs/SuperBowl – who’s with me on the math? Exhibition’s entertaining and all, but….).
While the AFC playoff picture is complete – there’s still the matter of seeding. Denver and Houston both have a 12-3 record and wins today by both clinch the bye week. All playoff spots have been established. It’s like Spring – it’s all over there but the seeding….
In the NFC, Atlanta has clinched both the bye and home field advantage. The coach may want to give some serious thought to letting those second and third string players get some real playing time – you never know when you might need them in the playoffs and you don’t need them stepping out on the field in the Divisional with “oh sh_t!” looks on their faces (you know the look – Jim Harbaugh had it most of last season).
The Packers have clinched NFC North. A win today also secures them the first-round bye so they have something to play for. San Francisco needs a win to clinch the NFC West, but if they lose and Seattle wins, it’s wild-card city for these guys.
Which brings us to the NFC East. This is the only division who has no team with a payoff spot secured. The division winner won’t be decided until Sunday night. If either the Vikings or Bears win, the Giants only get into the playoffs with a win and a Dallas loss. If the Redskins lose, they also need the Vikings and Bears both to lose to secure the second wild-card spot.
And here we go with the final matchups of the year — all being played on Sunday! And all are division matchups. If there was ever a weekend to break out the good beer and get the high-end chicken fingers, this is it.
Buccaneers @ Falcons
Jets @ Bills
Ravens @ Bengals
Bears @ Lions
Texans @ Colts
Panthers @ Saints
Eagles @ Giants
Browns @ Steelers
Jaguars @ Titans
Chiefs @ Broncos
Packers @ Vikings
Dolphins @ Patriots
Raiders @ Chargers
Rams @ Seahawks
Cowboys @ Redskins
It’s been a great year, and on behalf of the Flyboy and the Football Savant Offspring, we wish you all a Happy Happy Happy New Year! (Channeling my inner Duck Dynasty on that one). The good news is, of course, that the end of my weekly column signals the resumption of the Sunday night radio show, I believe.

Finally.
/galt
It is still looking like a 49er vs Bronco Superbowl.
Well it will be nice to be looking forward to next season. Nice for the Saints to get this season over with.
/plus Sean Payton will be signed again with the Saints.
It would be nice if the Saints win today and finish a .500 but according to my son if they lose they get some better picks in the off season.
And the Saints score twice in just minutes…excellent.
@ Lily:
I’m NOT turning on the TV.
I’m gonna just cry instead.
SWhat has happened to my Texans?
@ Lily:
Holla!
@ Calo:
They aren’t playing good again this Sunday? Haven’t checked the scores… They have a chance to redeem themselves in the play-offs..they are still going to be in the play-offs. I’m not sure what is going on with them. They have thrown away home field advantage.
/The only game I remember really this whole month by the Saints is when they played the Cowboys last week-end.
Hope you are doing well {{{{Calo}}}}! I look like Jack the Ripper got a hold of me. LOL!

@ Calo:
Ouch just saw the score. It isn’t that bad but I’m not sure what the heck is going on with them….they should have sewn up the last few games. Hopefully they will catch their snap in the play-offs.
@ Lily:
The 49ers are going to win the division, but the Seahawks are dangerous. It’s not a sure thing to win it all. I’m just betting on SF.
Carlina Girl, Mucho thanks for putting the kaboshon the 49 ers for me. I owe you.
the Giants only get into the playoffs with a win and a Dallas loss.
the Giants seem to be holding up their end… 35-7 at the half. (ouch)now if the Cowboys choke, all is good.
Saints just hit a long field goal!
/sad that I am hoping for a .500 finish with my team. After all the problems in the off season that is the best I can hope for. Oh well I can live with that.
theoutsider wrote:
Oh you aren’t off with your predictions …just saying the Seahawks are deadly out there. This season nothing is a sure thing. Watched the Seahawks play for the first time last week-end…I liked what I saw. They are going to be a problem for many teams.
I see Detroits problem the offensive line was purposely letting people through to tackle the QB. Truly offensive.
brookly red wrote:
The Giants have been off and on this season it has to be frustrating to be a Giants fan this year. Looks like they are holding up their end and there is a good chance the Cowboys might choke. Also a hard season for Cowboy fans too. They should have wrapped up their play-off spot by now.

I said he’d make gun control a priority after re-election back when he was running. I don’t think he can get anything through the House, though. I don’t think. If the Republicans sell us out on that I can’t think of any particular reason to stay with the Republican Party. There will be a split and a third party form. Obama wants to go over the Cliff, and the Democrats are with him. He’s already told the Republicans that even if they sell out completely it isn’t good enough. Where the Republicans bear responsibility was in not having the balls not to raise the Debt Ceiling without substantive real cuts in the Federal budget. It shouldn’t be too hard to cut back to 2006 levels of spending, but the Democrats refuse to even consider that. They want to raise taxes and spend every new dollar they get buying votes for the next election. Why should the Republicans cooperate with that? The other place the Republicans are falling ddown is getting the message out. Obama wants to raise taxes significantly on successful small businesses. In a de facto Recession. That’ll improve the unemployment picture. Republicans should be running TV ads sayin gthat Obama wants to pyut people out of work in his class warfare. That happens to be the truth, that rare flower that neither side really respects.

But it does lessen some of the MSM impact. So, (as has been said in conservative circles lately) we can make a difference in the culture at large and should start immediately.

another heart attack
@ brookly red:
As far as news sites yeah there needs a huge shift to fix on TV. But just as much as there is bad…you can also find some good. Besides I also agree with you that too many people get their information solely from TV!!! I shake my head at that! Good grief. I don’t watch the news on TV all that much. Sometimes I just need a break from the news. My TV is mostly used for watching DVD’s or series without an agenda and no commericals! Plus right now I’m stuck on the couch and the computer can only intertain me only so far and reading a book can only carry me only so far. I refuse to watch TV during the day just on principal.

Another game with the Drama Cowboys. They’re killing me, I’m not a young man. Please Lord let them start the game like it’s the 4th quarter and they’re behind by 14 points!
good start for Dallas…
@ brookly red:
It was fine until you told me you were kidding that Washington scored.
Watching Dallas lose is like being a 49er fan and watching Oakland lose.

Yes, having armed guards at schools is crazy. We clearly need more signs telling crazy people they can’t bring guns there, instead.

In fact San Fran’s rookie QB is Christian too! They hate him because of his tat’s.
You know young people don’t care if being Christian is going to get you sneered at. I know my youngest son knows excatly what to say to someone who doesn’t believe and they start bashing him because he does.

Marcy Kaptur is an idiot.
She just said that if they don’t raise taxes on “the rich,” then people who earn “millions and billions of dollars” will “get” hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I guess she believes that everything belongs to the government, and they just let you keep some of it.

I think it is cruel to disarm law abiding people entrusted with our most precious citizens.
Ban Criminals first before guns. It seems like it’s only criminals who misuse them? Why give criminals all these rights to walk around free in preference to restricting some metal owners?

isn’t that what the border patrol guy Holder’s people murdered was using?
@ brookly red:
Not that I’d heard. They don’t typically use “less-lethal” weapons like that. No real need for them.
The tower guards at Bucca used them to mark prisoners who were acting up, so the entry teams could identify them.
Works much better than telling them “It’s the Arab guy in the orange jumpsuit”

Well, if we knew Romo was getting paid to throw the games with interceptions and fumbles it would at least make some sense, unless Jones is way into blow jobs or something.
