1. Schedule regular bathroom breaks.
Waiting until your bladder feels full to urinate can be stressful on your bladder and mind. One way to prevent accidental leakage is to schedule bathroom breaks every two hours. Even if your bladder doesn’t feel full, you should make regular attempts to urinate.
2. Limit the amount of caffeine and alcohol in your diet.
Caffeine and alcohol can adversely affect the way your bladder functions. For that reason, you should pay close attention to your consumptions of these types of beverages.
If you have an overactive bladder, it might be a good idea for you to avoid these types of beverages altogether. Caffeine and alcohol are diuretics that can aggravate your bladder.
3. Find the location of the nearest restroom.
Sudden urges to urinate can cause you to panic. This is especially true if you are in an unfamiliar place.
If you suffer from male incontinence, you should be aware of the nearest restroom at all times. This will make you more at ease as you visit restaurants, shopping malls and public events.
4. Participate in daily exercise and eat healthy meals to lose weight.
Obesity is a major contributor to male incontinence. The extra body weight places undue pressure on your bladder.
Participate in regular exercise and eat balanced meals each day. By losing 10 percent of your current body weight, your incontinence episodes can be reduced by as much as 50 percent.
5. Eliminate your smoking habit.
Although it may be difficult, you should stop smoking if you have male incontinence. In fact, smoking cigarettes and cigars weakens tissues, causes coughing episodes and damages small blood vessels. In addition, smoking can cause bladder cancer.
6. Check your prescriptions.
It’s no secret that prescription drugs have side effects. If you are taking multiple drugs, they can interact and cause incontinence. Schedule an appointment with your medical provider to determine if your prescriptions are affecting your bladder.
