The Feasts of St. Joseph

On Friday 19 March 2010, Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi invoked a prayer to St. Joseph for help in passing the Health Care debacle. Not being Catholic, I couldn’t remember who he was the patron saint of besides children’s aspirin, so I decided to check Wikipuddlia.

Here’s the entry for St. Joseph:

Further down, under Sainthood, we find this:

Here’s the pertinent paragraph enlarged.

Now click on that image. It’s on Wikipedia, so it’s got to be true… heh. My initial reaction was that some wag edited the Wiki for fun, BUT WAIT! IT’S TRUE!

From The Washington Times:

Seeking to shore up support for her embattled health bill, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi today announced it was the feast of Saint Joseph the Worker, adding “We pray to Saint Joseph to benefit the workers of America which is what our health bill would do.”

Problem is, March 19 is indeed the feast day of Saint Joseph, foster-father of Jesus. But the actual feast of St. Joseph the Worker (same man, two ways of commemorating him) comes in six weeks. Set for May 1, it was introduced by Pope Pius XII in 1955 to counteract May Day, the high holiday for communist and socialist workers.

So, Wikipedia is right, Nancy blew it twice in one fell swoop, and Joe Biden’s disease is contagious.

Once again, when liberals run out of logical points to attack conservatives, they attempt to smear the entire G.O.P.  as racists without a shred of evidence, while ignoring the evil racist history of the Democrat Party itself.

Without a shred of evidence, they manufacture racism, promote it, and attempt to paste it onto the platform of the one Party that eliminated slavery, promoted and passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and fought against racial discrimination.

The following is a speech that should be reviewed and republished every few years.  While the Democrats were mocking Charleton Heston for his support of the 2nd Amendment, his leadership in the National Rifle Association, and his diagnosis with early Alzheimer’s [did you get that? The Dems actually made fun of a person with an incurable debilitating disorder?] Charleton Heston gave the Keynote Address at the Free Congress Foundation’s 20th Anniversary Gala function thirteen years ago.

Charlton Heston’s Keynote Address at the Free Congress Foundation’s 20th Anniversary Gala

December 20, 1997

What an honor it is to address the Free Congress Foundation. At a glance “Free” reads as a verb rather than an adjective. “Free Congress.” Not a bad directive for Mr. Clinton. Anyway…

I like it when the party of Lincoln honors our free heritage. This nation has been blessed by the minds and mettle of many good people, and indeed Abe was among the best. A man of great moral character, a trait often lacking among our leaders. This is disturbing, but not without remedy. One good election can correct such ills.

Above all, I hope those of us gathered here tonight have more in common with Mr. Lincoln than just party affiliation. Better that we grasp a common vision than simply wear the cloak. Even our President pretends to be a conservative when it suits him. We must be more than that.

I know… it’s not easy. Imagine being point man for the National Rifle Association, preserving the right to keep and bear arms. I ran for office, I was elected, and now I serve… as a moving target for pundits who’ve called me everything from “ridiculous” and “duped” to a “brain-injured, senile and crazy old man.”

Maybe that comes with the territory. But as I have stood in the crosshairs of those who aim at Second Amendment freedom, I have realized that guns are not the only issue, and I am not the only target. It is much, much bigger than that – which is what I want to talk to you about today.

Beck and the Church: The Meaning of ‘Social Justice’

by Mr. P ( 111 Comments › )
Filed under Leftists, Media, Politics, Progressives, Religion at March 14th, 2010 - 11:30 am

In the Christian obsessed with “social justice” it isn’t easy to discern whether charity is flourishing or faith is expiring. Nicolás Gómez Dávila

Glenn Beck is being criticized for telling folks to leave churches in which “social justice” is casually mentioned as a tenet or principle of the faith. News Hounds says that Progressive and Conservative religious groups are upset with Beck.

Beck is a very religious person. He talks a lot about God and Jesus on his show. The problem here, seems to be an assumption and a misunderstanding.

The assumption:

Beck has also done a lot of reading. He’s read modern and historical documents which outline Progressivism, the cancer of American politics. Anyone who has done this or similar reading, or knows the ins and outs of Progressivism, is well aware that “Social Justice” is a term used pretty much synonymously with “Socialism.”

For example, here’s a taste of how the Green Party of Canada construes ’social justice’ (I’ll embolden key points):

We assert that the key to social justice is the equitable distribution of social and natural resources, both locally and globally, to meet basic human needs unconditionally, and to ensure that all citizens have full opportunities for personal and social development.

This requires:

  • a just organization of the world and a stable world economy which will close the widening gap between rich and poor, both within and between countries; balance the flow of resources from South to North; and lift the burden of debt on poor countries which prevents their development.
  • In other words, ’social justice,’ here stands for redistribution of wealth under the guise of protecting the environment.

    Wiki describes ’social justice’ as

a concept that some use to describe the movement towards a socially just world. In this context, social justice is based on the concepts of human rights and equality and involves a greater degree of economic egalitarianism through progressive taxation, income redistribution, or even property redistribution, policies aimed toward achieving that which developmental economists refer to as more equality of opportunity and equality of outcome than may currently exist in some societies or are available to some classes in a given society.

In other words, ’social justice,’ here, is one of the key components of Progressivism.

Beck is very excitable and often things spring from his mouth that are factually inaccurate or could be construed as such. But that is not the case here. Beck merely assumes that the sense in which he uses ’social justice’ is understood by the constant warnings he gives about Progressives and Socialists on his show. I think this is a reasonable assumption.

But there is also a misunderstanding.

Consider this, from Restoring Social Justice:

We’re troubled by the extent of social breakdown today.

We’re troubled by how it afflicts individual lives and how it affects our society in general.

We’re troubled by the fact that a teenage boy going to school in one of our major cities may learn more about a life of delinquency than he does about a future filled with hope and opportunity.

We’re troubled that four out of 10 children and nearly seven out of 10 black children in America are born to unmarried mothers, a fact that will cast a long shadow down the course of a child’s life.

We’re also troubled by welfare state responses to problems like these. It’s not only that welfare state responses discourage independence and self-sufficiency and that costly programs have proven ineffective at stopping social breakdown. We’re also troubled because some of these approaches actually make people and society worse in the process. Welfare state programs have sometimes hurt the very people they were intended to help.

This group is using the same term, ’social justice,’ not as a means of promoting Big national and, indeed, global Government, but as a the goal which a free society can achieve without becoming a welfare state.

Concerning religion, you have to determine whether or not the ’social justice’ your religious institution advocates resembles that of the former examples or that of the latter example.

The Arab lobby – Racking up victories

    by Speranza ( 97 Comments › )
Filed under Islamic Finance, Islamists, Leftists, Politics, Saudi Arabia at March 4th, 2010 - 11:00 am

For all the talk about AIPAC, the Israel lobby and various alleged nefarious grassroots lobbyists for the Jewish state – nobody can touch the Saudi lobby for influence in this country. Ex ambassadors are lured by Saudi money to become lobbyists or heads of Saudi funded think tanks, universities are endowed to create Islamic studies departments, former politicians and cabinet appointees (the late Spiro Agnew, Paul Findley and the odious Brent Scowcroft) are also bought off, all to spread the lies about the peacefulness of Islam and the Arab world.

    by Benny Avni

The legend of the Jewish lobby’s influence over US policies continues to grow — even as the Arab lobby, led by the Saudis, keeps racking up successes.

With petrodollars and tender loving care spent lavishly on universities, ex-diplomats, PR firms and gullible journalists, the Arab Lobby constantly pushes two contradictory story lines:

    * Arabs seek peace with Israel.
    * There’s no place for a Jewish state in the Middle East

This week, Saudi-led Arab countries have convinced Western reporters that they’re advancing the peace process with Israel. Meanwhile, universities in America, Canada, Europe and the Arab world are marking “Israeli Apartheid Week” — a vile campaign meant to return the “Zionism is racism” equation to the top of the world’s agenda.

In Cairo yesterday, the Arab League gave its nod of approval for the Palestinian Authority’s president, Mahmoud Abbas, to participate in indirect talks with Israel. This is meant to show us that the Arab countries are seeking peace.

Yet, in reality, Israelis and Palestinians have publicly conducted direct talks since the early 1990s. The Palestinians broke off those talks last year under increasing pressure from leading Arab countries, which hoped President Obama would lean hard on the new government of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

    [...]

Only a well-oiled PR machine can explain how the Saudis manage to harness such dear liberal values as oppression of women: Even though women there aren’t even permitted to vote or drive, the Saudis managed for years to get good grades from the UN Development Program, which marks “improvement” in women’s status as progress.

But selling the “improvement” line — to the United Nations or to gullible New York Times columnists — isn’t enough. They have to add insult to injury by telling the Times’ Maureen Dowd that women suffer worse in Israel, thanks to “religious militants”.

Glenn Beck Explains What Is Politically Rightwing and Leftwing

    by Rodan ( 53 Comments › )
Filed under Leftists, Politics, Progressives at March 3rd, 2010 - 11:00 am

The Progressives keep associating Nazism and Fascism with the Rightwing. This myth has been destroyed by Jonah Goldberg’s Liberal Fascism and Glenn Beck’s Revolutionary Holocaust Special. All Totalitarian State based ideologies are of the Left. They have been inspired by the French Revolution and Karl Marx. These ideologies believe in the concept of perfected men, such as the Nazis’ Master Race and the Communists’ New Man. These beliefs have led to race based and class based genocide in the 20th century which has resulted in the death of Millions.

As Beck explains, the further to the Right one goes politically, the more Individualistic it gets. The net result is Anarchism, hence the need for some Government. The further to the Left one gets, the more Collectivist and the end result is a Totalitarian government. Hence Nazism, Communism, Fascism, Socialism and Maoism are all Progressive Ideologies. They all believe in control of the masses by an elite and the reshaping of society via class or racial grounds. Progressive Ideologies are anti-human at the core and history has proven this.

Tories and Cameron blow Huge Point lead in UK Elections

The UK, like America, has had a financial crisis. Like America, they have  a Totalitarian regime that appeases the enemy of the British people while demonizing the patriotic British. UK cities have Islamic No Go zones and even Sharia law is accepted there. Unemployment is up and the people are angry about the direction of their nation. This would spell trouble for any government and it appeared to be the case a few months ago when the Tories (Conservatives) had a double digit point lead. However that has vanished to 2 points now and the current radical Progressive PM Gordon Brown may lead a Minority Government .

David Cameron, the favorite to become the U.K.’s next prime minister, has seen his commanding lead over Gordon Brown vanish. Alex Massie on how “change” has lost its magic for the Tories.

It wasn’t supposed to be like this. An exhausted Labour Party led by an unpopular, charmless prime minister whose economic policies had helped bankrupt the country was supposed to be sleepwalking to electoral disaster. Barring calamity, David Cameron’s Conservatives would win this year’s British general election and win it handsomely to boot. Suddenly, however, that’s no longer such a slam dunk. The Tories are wobbling and British politics is less predictable and more interesting than seemed possible just a couple of months ago.

A Sunday Times survey this week reported that the Tories hold just a two-point advantage and consequently, thanks to the quirks of the current constituency boundaries, Labour would, if this result were repeated in the election itself, emerge as the largest party.

Favorgate: Obama Administration breaks federal law, offers job to Dem Senate candidate opposing Sen. Mike Bennett, D-CO.

    Favorgate
What did the president know, and when did he know it?
    Posted by Mark Impomeni

We take a break from the hyperventilating over the latest moves in the slow-motion kabuki dance that is the Obama Administration’s efforts to ram its federal takeover of the health care system down the throats of the overwhelming majority of Americans who oppose the various bills to take a look at what should be a much, much bigger story.

Last week, Democratic Senate Candidate Joe Sestak, a retired Admiral, let slip in an interview that someone in the White House offered him a position in the Administration if he would drop his primary challenge of Arlen Specter in Pennsylvania. Sestak wouldn’t elaborate on which job he was offered – speculation centers on Secretary of the Navy – but it hardly matters. As Jeffrey Lord points out, federal law prohibits anyone from offering, soliciting, or receiving any federal office in exchange for a political favor.

“Whoever solicits or receives … any….thing of value, in consideration of the promise of support or use of influence in obtaining for any person any appointive office or place under the United States, shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than one year, or both.” – 18 USC Sec. 211

It seems highly unlikely that this was a misunderstanding or exaggeration on Sestak’s part. It’s the second time in this election season that another Democrat has accused the White House of trying to buy them out of a Senate challenge with an offer of employment.

Last year, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel’s deputy, Jim Messina, reportedly suggested that Colorado Senate candidate Andrew Romanoff might find himself a position in the Department of the Interior if he dropped his prospective primary challenge of Sen. Michael Bennett. Romanoff, like Sestak, refused to be bought off.

The Sestak and Bennett incidents are potentially far worse than that. Republicans need to start asking very pointed, very public questions, right now. They should call for a Special Counsel to lead a Department of Justice investigation along the lines of Patrick Fitzgerald’s look at the Valerie Plame affair. Even if no wrongdoing is uncovered, the atmospherics of this scandal in waiting are bad for the Obama White House. The president would have to explain why relativley low-level staffers in his Administration feel empowered to offer high-ranking positions as plums for doing the Administration’s bidding without consulting their superiors.

GOP Senator to Ask for DOJ Investigation into Global Warming Hoax, Calls Gore’s Movie “Science Fiction”

Gotta love Sen. Inhofe, but don’t hold your breath waiting for this to happen until we take back both branches of Congress (the House and Senate) from the socialists in 2011…

James Inhofe (R-OK) intends to ask for a probe of the embattled climate scientists for possible criminal acts. And he thinks (former VP Al) Gore should be recalled to explain his prior congressional testimony.

Senator James Inhofe (R-OK) today asked the Obama administration to investigate what he called “the greatest scientific scandal of our generation” — the actions of climate scientists revealed by the Climategate files, and the subsequent admissions by the editors of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) Fourth Assessment Report (AR4).

Senator Inhofe also called for former Vice President Al Gore to be called back to the Senate to testify.

“In [Gore's] science fiction movie, every assertion has been rebutted,” Inhofe said. He believes Vice President Gore should defend himself and his movie before Congress.

Just prior to a hearing at 10:00 a.m. EST, Senator Inhofe released a minority staff report from the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, of which he is ranking member. Senator Inhofe is asking the Department of Justice to investigate whether there has been research misconduct or criminal actions by the scientists involved, including Dr. Michael Mann of Pennsylvania State University and Dr. James Hansen of Columbia University and the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies.

This report, obtained exclusively by Pajamas Media before today’s hearing, alleges:

[The] Minority Staff of the Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works believe the scientists involved may have violated fundamental ethical principles governing taxpayer-funded research and, in some cases, federal laws. In addition to these findings, we believe the emails and accompanying documents seriously compromise the IPCC -backed “consensus” and its central conclusion that anthropogenic emissions are inexorably leading to environmental catastrophes.

As has been reported here at Pajamas Media over the last several months, the exposure of the Climategate files has led to a reexamination of the IPCC Assessment Reports, especially the fourth report (AR4), published in 2007. The IPCC AR4 report was named by Environmental Protection Agency head Lisa Jackson as one of the major sources of scientific support for the agency’s Endangerment Finding, the first step towards allowing the EPA to regulate carbon dioxide as a pollutant.

Since the Climategate files were released, the IPCC has been forced to retract a number of specific conclusions — such as a prediction that Himalayan glaciers would disappear by 2035 — and has been forced to confirm that the report was based in large part on reports from environmental activist groups instead of peer-reviewed scientific literature. Dr. Murari Lal, an editor of the IPCC AR4 report, admitted to the London Daily Mail that he had known the 2035 date was false, but was included in the report anyway “purely to put political pressure on world leaders.”

Based on this minority staff report, Senator Inhofe will be calling for an investigation into potential research misconduct and possible criminal acts by the researchers involved. At the same time, Inhofe will ask the Environmental Protection Agency to reopen its consideration of an Endangerment Finding for carbon dioxide as a pollutant under the Federal Clean Air Act, and will ask Congress to withdraw funding for further consideration of carbon dioxide as a pollutant.

In requesting that the EPA reopen the Endangerment Finding, Inhofe joins with firms such as the Peabody Energy Company and several state attorneys general (such as Texas and Virginia) in objecting to the Obama administration’s attempt to extend regulatory control over carbon dioxide emissions in the United States. Senator Inhofe believes this staff report “strengthens the case” for the Texas and Virginia attorneys general.

54% of Texas Hispanics are Conservative

Filed under Democratic Party, Elections 2010, Leftists, Liberal Fascism, Politics, Polls, Progressives, Racism, Republican Party at February 24th, 2010 - 5:30 pm

The Progressive Media has been hyping that Texas will turn into a Democratic State. The basis for this assumption is the growing Hispanic population in that state. Well a new Poll comes out that throws cold water on this theory. More than half of Texas Hispanics call themselves Conservative. This doesn’t surprise me as I have encountered many of my Tejano (Hispanic Texans) cousins and they are even more Conservative than I, especially on social issues. Texas is one of those states where discussing social issues works in the GOP’s favor. This is drawing many Tejanos into the Right and rejecting the Totalitarian Progressive Movement and their attempts to enslave them.

AUSTIN – A bent to conservatism and family makes Hispanics a promising pool of votes for Republicans, but the party’s targeting of illegal immigrants has withered its attraction.

Regardless, Gov. Rick Perry has fared relatively well, perhaps because of his anti-Washington rhetoric and his careful immigration stance, a recent poll indicates.

It shows more than half of Texas Hispanics call themselves conservative, and a surprising 23 percent say they might participate in Tuesday’s GOP primary. Among those, Perry leads Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison by 2 to 1, according to the poll, commissioned by an Austin consultant for a national group of Hispanic legislative leaders.

Read the rest here: More than half of Hispanics identify as conservative, poll finds

With control of the Education system, the Left has erased the true history of Hispanics. Instead they emphasize victimhood and teach us that we are inferior to whites. Thankfully, in my case my Spaniard Grandfather taught me about the 700 year Resistance to Arab Aggression  and how for 150 year the Spanish Empire had the world by the balls. This gave me pride and lead me to reject the slave mentality that many of my fellow Hispanics have. This is why I despise Progressives, because it is personal to me. They lied about my history and view me as inferior. They only racially insult any Rightwing Hispanic like Marco Rubio, who doesn’t accept subservient status.

The article of course downplays the findings by claiming that 70% define themselves as Democrats. This doesn’t mean anything, remember the Reagan Democrats? They were White Catholics who, although Democrats, voted for Reagan in 1980 and 1984. Many switched to the GOP and their Children also vote Republican. Hispanics are no different. Contrary to the racist Progressive myth the Hispanic experience is closer to the White Catholic one, than the Black experience in America. We are an immigrant group and like all before want to achieve the American dream. The Totalitarian Progressives  don’t want Hispanics to succeed. They want us to live in Ghettos and be their serfs as they have tried to do to Blacks. Well I have news for the racist Left, it isn’t going to happen!

Progressive Racist Donny Deutsch calls Marco Rubio a Coconut

Filed under Hate Speech, Leftists, Liberal Fascism, Progressives, Republican Party at February 23rd, 2010 - 4:00 pm

The American New Left Progressives are racists. Like their German cousins from 70 years ago, they believe that certain races are inferior. What differentiates them from the Nazis is that they believe the inferior must be taken care of and treated like Serfs, where as the German Progressives believed in the extermination of the inferior. In a blatant case of this Progressive racism, radical totalitarian fascist, Donny Deutsch, has called Florida Senate candidate, Marco Rubio, a coconut, implying he is tan on the outside and white on the inside.

CNBC and MSNBC contributor Donny Deutsch used racially charged language on Monday night, smearing Republican senatorial candidate Marco Rubio as a “coconut.” Deutsch appeared on HLN’s Joy Behar Show and used the word, which Urban Dictionarydefines as a “person who is tan on the outside” and “white on the inside.” Rubio is the son of Cuban exiles.

Deutsch employed the derogatory term while hitting politicians with no experience. He noted the success of such candidates and derided, “…You almost need that blank piece of paper. That’s the new model. Like, you know, this coconut Rubio down in Florida.”

Read the rest: MSNBC Regular Donny Deutsch Slams Marco Rubio With Racially Charged Attack: He’s a ‘Coconut’

Donny is angry that Marco Rubio is a Hispanic who is proud and knows his heritage. This confidence is the reason he’s not into racial politics, he’s secure in his identity. Leftists want certain ethnic groups to stay as their Serfs that can abuse and manipulate. Rubio is a threat as the policies he supports would break the chains of Progressive serfdom. Make no mistake, Hispanics like Marco and I are a threat to the Left. We know what they’re about and just like our ancestors resisted their Islamic allies for 700 years, we are resisting Progressive lies.

Donny  Deutsch is a coward who would not dare call a Rightwing Hispanic from Florida a coconut to our faces.

    Here is the video:

Update: The So called Hispanic Civil Rights groups like La Raza and LULAC haven’t made a statement on this racist statement. This shows you they don’t care about Hispanics, they are Slaves of their racist Progressive overlords. Marco Rubio is a real Hispanic, not cowards like these groups.

Both the American and French Revolutions come from the ideas of the Age of Enlightenment. However, they come from different schools of thoughts. The American Revolution was influenced by the Scottish School, which believed in Free Markets and Individualism. The French revolution was influenced by French School, which believed in the radical transformation of society via the State. The difference between the two was stark and the effects are still felt today. The Progressive Ideologies of Marxism, Stalinism, Nazism, Maoism, Fascism, the 3rd World Liberation Movement, Neo Wilsonian Compassionate Conservatism, the British Tory Progressive Conservatism and the American New Left all are inspired by the Jacobins and Robespierre.

The American Revolution is the major influence for the Conservative and Libertarian Ideologies which are based on Individualism.

In the video below, Glenn Beck contrasts the difference between the American and French Revolutions. Beck shows the roots of Progressivism and all the Ideologies spawned by it.

The once anti Jihadi now possible junkie. Said this

Wow. He really crossed that line? Wasn’t he offended by the LaRouche nuts signs at the Tea parties calling Obama Hitler?

Beck is a friend to Israel and the Jews. Like Beck or hate him he is for freedom and self reliance, while Hitler was about oppression and state power. To call him Hitler is offensive. Why is CJ trying to trivialize the singling out and genocide of more than 6 million Jews? Is he going to throw Israel under his bus soon like the whole Anti Jihadi movement?  In doing this CJ you are showing your anti-Semitism. Know wonder you drifted to the left.

CJ went on to post more insanities

Let me ask again. CJ what are you on?  Even though you hate me please go to rehab. You are making a total fool of yourself.

By resigning Evan Bayh has sent waves through the establishment.  His resignation is a blow to the Left’s agenda. All things being equal this is a GOP pick up. However, this is deeper than a Senate Seat. It is an example of the Progressive Democratic agenda collapsing once again. They have tried this before, moving the nation to the Left. Each time they have been rejected.

The political retirement of Evan Bayh, at age 54, is being portrayed by various sages as a result of too much partisanship, or the Senate’s dysfunction, or even the systemic breakdown of American governance. Most of this is rationalization. The real story, of which Mr. Bayh’s frustration is merely the latest sign, is the failure once again of liberal governance.

For the fourth time since the 1960s, American voters in 2008 gave Democrats overwhelming control of both Congress and the White House. Republicans haven’t had such large majorities since the 1920s. Yet once again, Democratic leaders have tried to govern the country from the left, only to find that their policies have hit a wall of practical and popular resistance.

Read the rest: Another Liberal Crackup

Keep in mind, a year ago the Progressives claimed they had a permanent majority. They thought America could be remolded in the Tranzi-Socialist image. Instead, thanks to Beck, the Tea Parties and others, a resistance to this fascist agenda was formed. Now states that went to Obama in 2008 are reverting back to Republicans.

Progressives don’t know what to do. In their desperation they will be dangerous. In fact, the Left has Bill Clinton and James Carville plotting to smear and blackmail the Tea Party members. It’s going to get ugly, but our side will prevail!

He has been hailed as a “military advocate” (Associated Press) and “one of the greatest patriots ever to serve in Congress” (former Rep. Harold Ford Jr.).

These obsequious obituaries leave out inconvenient truths: John “Jack” Murtha was an unrepentant smear merchant and corruptocrat to the bitter end.

In May 2006, during an MSNBC appearance that Marines and their families will never forget or forgive, Murtha accused US troops of wantonly killing some two dozen civilians, including children, in the terrorist stronghold of Haditha, Iraq. Bellowed Murtha: “Our troops overreacted because of the pressure on them, and they killed innocent civilians in cold blood.”

He publicly indicted the Marines before military investigations had been completed. His remarks opened military-bashing floodgates around the world.

In the wake of Murtha’s reckless blabbing, MSNBC’s Keith Olbermann accused the Haditha Marines of “willful targeted brutality.” The Nation magazine claimed that “members of the 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment perpetrated a massacre.” The New York Times dubbed Haditha the “defining atrocity” of the Iraq war. International papers piled on with Vietnam-era “My Lai” allusions. Murtha cold-bloodedly sat back and enjoyed the ride while the Marines were left twisting in the wind.

By 2008, seven of the Marines charged in the incident had been exonerated or had charges against them dropped. One still awaits a long, dragged-out trial this year.

Murtha, the so-called “military advocate,” went to his deathbed refusing to apologize or retract the attacks on the Haditha Marines (several of whom unsuccessfully sued him for libel to restore their honor). Decent people would call this intransigent treachery.

[...] In 1980, Murtha was an unindicted co-conspirator in a massive bribery probe — in which undercover FBI agents videotaped Murtha entertaining a $50,000 bribe from agents posing as emissaries for Arab sheiks trying to enter our country illegally. From transcripts of those conversations published by the late newspaper columnist Jack Anderson, Murtha’s true colors shined:

I want to deal with you guys awhile be fore I make any transactions at all, period. . . . After we’ve done some business, well, then I might change my mind. . . .”

I’m going to tell you this. If anybody can do it — I’m not B.S.-ing you fellows — I can get it done my way,” he boasted. “There’s no question about it.”

Murtha worried not about his integrity or how his constituents might be harmed, but about getting ratted out
