How to Pick The Perfect Theme for Your Party

July 16, 2018

If there is one thing that can transform an otherwise dull special event into a truly memorable party, that critical element is a theme. Regardless of whether you are hosting a birthday party, a baby shower, a retirement celebration or something else, you can select a fun theme that will get your guests excited about the event. A theme adds a unique element to a party, and it could even make it easier to decorate the venue, plan for snacks and drinks and more. These tips can help you to pick an amazing theme for your next party.

Consider the Type of Event
Before you let your imagination run wild with all of the party theme possibilities, it is important that you focus on the type of event that you are planning. Your event type may be a guide as you explore ideas. For example, a common theme idea for an engagement or bridal shower involves rooms in the home. A baby shower party may be a gender reveal party. These are more common ideas that are directly related to the type of party that is being hosted, but your imagination can help you to explore other ideas that may not be directly related to the event type.

Brainstorm Creative Ideas
There are many different ways to come up with a great idea. For example, consider setting a theme related to the guest of honor’s favorite movie or hobby. Choose an exciting city, such as New York City or Las Vegas. Pick an era, such as medieval times. When you choose a theme, consider the many different ways you can creatively decorate the space and plan the party around that theme. You may find that you feel more passion and excitement for one specific theme that comes to mind. If you are excited about it, these guests may also be equally as excited.

Think About the Guests
Many themed parties involve guests bringing a relevant dish to share or getting dressed in costume. Some themes may be easier for your guests to participate with than others. Themed parties are more fun for everyone involved when all of the guests participate. Avoid choosing a theme that is too difficult or narrow. For example, rather than choosing one movie as a theme, you can choose Hollywood as a theme. An alternative is to choose a movie with numerous sequels so that there are more options available to your guests.

A theme is not a necessary aspect of party planning, but it may be one of the easiest ways to make your event fun and exciting for all of your guests. Choose a theme as a first step in your planning efforts so that it can guide your other decisions.
