South Coast Today has the story:

Cat lucky to be alive after 80-foot fall from tree in Rochester

By MATT CAMARA

MARION — Plummeting 80 feet from a tree might have cost Fortunate the cat one of her nine lives but, other than a couple of pulled muscles, a possible parasitic infection and lots of pent-up stress, veterinarians at the Marion Animal Hospital said Wednesday she was doing just fine.

“I don’t see anything wrong with this cat; it’s unbelievable,” veterinarian Dr. Rachel Francis said as she prodded every inch of the feisty feline. The cat, which evaded four rescue attempts earlier this week, tried three times to flee the exam room, once breaking out of the room and running down the hall, where a technician cornered her.

“She’s certainly a survivor,” Francis said.

It’s All About the Animals pet shelter founder Pam Robinson found Fortunate — a temporary name until someone adopts her — on New Year’s Day in a trap she set the day before to catch the poor puss.

The cat had vanished into the brush after falling out of a tree off Mary’s Pond Road in Rochester Sunday night when Marion firefighters cut the branch she had perched on for eight days.

Sunday night’s attempt came after three other unsuccessful tries to recover the cat by the Rochester Fire Department and local tree services.

“She’s not bad compared to how long she was out there,” Robinson said, referring to Fortunate’s condition.

No one has stepped up to claim the black, brown and white kitty but Robinson and Francis said there is little doubt Fortunate belonged to someone.

“Feral cats are cats that have been out in the wild; they don’t act like this,” Francis said as Fortunate nuzzled anyone who came close enough to the examination table.

Francis pegged Fortunate’s age at two years due to her lack of broken teeth and prescribed two weeks of isolation — in case she’s sick and contagious to other cats — and plenty of vitamins for the underweight kitty. Francis also said Fortunate is likely spayed but decided not to check for sure because that would involve shaving the cat’s stomach and stressing her out even more.

As for how she survived an 80-foot fall, Francis chalked it up to “high-rise syndrome,” a phenomenon in which cats falling from more than six stories have higher survival rates than those falling from two to five stories. Falling farther gives the cat time to right itself and land on its feet, Francis said.

Robinson, sporting her usual “Rescue a Friend” T-shirt, said she intends to keep Fortunate for at least six weeks to recover and regain weight before allowing anyone to adopt the cat.

But Robinson is not giving Fortunate away to just anyone. Interested families will need to submit an essay on why they should be able to take Fortunate home with them. Children interested in giving Fortunate a permanent name can also write to Robinson with their ideas.

Anyone interested in adopting Fortunate can write to It’s All About the Animals at 103 Marion Road, Rochester, MA 02770.

Daily Mail (UK) has the story:

Missing cat reunited with its delighted owner 16 YEARS after it first disappeared

An astonished cat lover has been reunited with her beloved missing moggy – 16 years after it first disappeared.

Pet cat Poldi walked out of the family home in Munich, Germany, in 1996 and was never seen again.

Poldi’s family desperately tried to find the missing cat but to no avail and after months of looking they believed they would never see him again.

Missing: Poldi disappeared from his family home in Munich, Germany, in 1996 but was incredibly found 16 years later

Reunited: The poorly cat, pictured with The Munich Tierschutzverein Animal Rescue Centre spokesman Eveline Kosenbach, is now back at home with his delighted owner Monika Moser

But an incredible 16 years later Poldi was found 20 miles away living in a forest.

The hikers who discovered the poorly puss took him to a local animal welfare centre where he and and his owner were identified by a tattoo on his ear.

The Munich Tierschutzverein Animal Rescue Centre spokesman Eveline Kosenbach said Poldi is now back with his relieved owner Monika Moser.

She said: ‘The cat was not feeling well – and obviously wanted to be found. He is now enjoying being looked after and is happily back with his owner at long last’.

Caturday: Cat Interrupts Liverpool-Tottenham Soccer Match

Business Insider: Cat On The Field!

Tony Manfred|February 06, 2012
Some cat interrupted the Liverpool-Tottenham game today.
The best part of this video is ESPN announcer Ian Darke pointing out, “There was a fox once.”
Here’s the video:

From Yahoo News:

In this video, an either brazen or oblivious cat walks out onto the field of a live Liverpool-Tottenham English Premier League soccer match.

The crowd cheers in delight and even the coaches can’t help laughing as the cat scurries across the field, stopping about 20 seconds into the video to take a brief rest next to Tottenham goalie Brad Friedel.

Live soccer matches are no stranger to overly enthusiastic fans taking to the field. Though as the announcer notes, “I don’t think that cat is going to handcuff himself to the goalpost, as we saw recently.”

After about half a minute on the field, the cat then trots off “of its own volition” before being gently scooped up over the field barrier by part of the stadium’s security team.

Back in December, a fox was spotted running onto the field during a local Dallas high-school football game. You can watch video of that encounter here.

Owner surprised to find cat regularly catches bus

A pet cat named Dodger is living up to his name – by catching free bus trips from his home town.

The ginger moggy, who was named after the Artful Dodger from Oliver Twist, has taken to hopping on and off the public transport at the bus station near his home.

The 15-year-old Tom even sits on bemused passengers’ laps as the bus makes up to 10 mile round trips from Bridport to Charmouth in Dorset.

Dodger is such a regular customer that some of the drivers take tins of cat food to work with them to give to him. They even know what stop to let him off at.

At the end of his journies the roving moggy returns to his home and owner Fee Jeanes.

Mrs Jeanes, 44, believes Dodger first took a liking to the buses as they are warm like greenhouses when the sun is on them.

Caturday: Don’t Cut the Toes Off the Gatos!

OK, I am a bit fan of bilingual puns. Since the only two languages that I can sort of communicate in are English and Spanish, most of my bilingual puns are in those two languages. My favorite goes something like this:

“People are always worried about something. Either it is the Greek debt crisis or world hunger. People always worry about something, but everyone knows there will always be arroz in Spanish Harlem.”

For those of you too young to remember, “There is a Rose in Spanish Harlem” was a very popular song once. For those of you who don’t speak Spanish, the word for rice is arroz.

Now for those of you who are not so familiar with English and Spanish pronunciation, a person who has Spanish as a first language would pronounce a rose and arroz, their word for “rice,” exactly the same. So, to them, the song title would sound like “there is rice in Spanish Harlem”.

I am not sure when I first heard it, but I could swear I hear kids singing, “Don’t cut the toes, don’t cut the toes, don’t cut the toes off the gatos.” OK, I am old. I may be confused. Maybe I even imagined it. But it is always there in my memory, like a few other songs that I wish would leave (see Earworm.)

Well, I have always hated the thought of declawing cats, so maybe that is why it sticks. So, I had to post this next video. Now, I need to give a disclaimer. I really don’t have much use for PETA and this video comes from PETA. So, I think back to that old adage. “Even a broken (analog) clock is right twice a day.” Well, I doubt that PETA is right that often, and I sincerely apologize to all broken clocks for comparing them to PETA. I ask that you heed this video without feeling too bad about where it comes from.
